  • Ensure Mac's get correct machine name from DHCP?

    - by Greg Whitfield
I have a problem in our network where our Mac's occasionally get given the wrong machine name while, I guess, getting a new DHCP lease. The DHCP servers are Windows based - the bulk of our network is Windows, but we have some Linux machines and an increasing number of Macs. The problem specifics is that occasionally a Mac will take on the name of another machine in the network. For example, I have a new Macbook Pro. In the OSX setup is gets called "gomez", and initially starts up on the network with that name without any problems. But after a few days when the machine was restarted (it had several restarts in the meantime), it ended up being called "florrie", which is actually the name of another machine in another part of the network. All network ops work fine, and indeed you don't notice most of the time - it's only when you run apps like Perforce that require the hostname that you get problems. I'm sorry I don't have more info than that, but if I know what to look for I can dig out some more facts. Or any hints on checking the network setup would be useful.

Hi all, I have got this error in during my mail server backup: 2010-09-16 06:24:20 ERROR backup of /var/mail/vhosts failed: tar: Removing leading `/' from member names tar: /var/mail/vhosts/host-name/0/user-name/.maildir/cur/1284588471.Vfd00I16e0223M187263.server.host-name\:2,: Cannot stat: No such file or directory tar: /var/mail/vhosts/host-name/0/user-name/.maildir/cur/1284587441.Vfd00I16e0220M85965.server.host-name\:2,: Cannot stat: No such file or directory tar: /var/mail/vhosts/host-name/0/user-name/.maildir/cur/1284588863.Vfd00I16e0225M370937.server.host-name\:2,: Cannot stat: No such file or directory tar: /var/mail/vhosts/host-name/0/user-name/.maildir/cur/1284602404.Vfd00I16e022aM416444.server.host-name\:2,: Cannot stat: No such file or directory tar: /var/mail/vhosts/host-name/0/user-name/.maildir/cur/1284594551.Vfd00I16e0228M678444.server.host-name\:2,: Cannot stat: No such file or directory tar: /var/mail/vhosts/host-name/0/user-name/.maildir/cur/1284588944.Vfd00I16e0226M622591.server.host-name\:2,: Cannot stat: No such file or directory tar: /var/mail/vhosts/host-name/0/user-name/.maildir/cur/1284587271.Vfd00I16e021fM96119.server.host-name\:2,: Cannot stat: No such file or directory tar: /var/mail/vhosts/host-name/0/user-name/.maildir/cur/1284599458.Vfd00I16e0229M181400.server.host-name\:2,: Cannot stat: No such file or directory tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors Is it happened because user deleted his messages? • Windows Server NTFS volume list file name encodings and any illegal file names

    - by benbradley
I'm having to deal with a Windows Server (NTFS) file server and our backup application appears to be failing with certain files. According to this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS#Internals NTFS apparently supports file names encoded in UTF-16 but according to their support team, our backup application only supports UTF-8. I'd like to confirm whether this is actually the problem by seeing the file name encoding for myself. The files that are failing appear to be using plain English A-Z letters and other ASCII characters. No accents or non-English letters etc. I suppose even though the letters appear to be plain A-Z the file name could still be encoded in UTF-16. Does anyone know of a utility or script that can recursively go through all files in a directory and show the encoding of the file name? Then I could try renaming to UTF-8 to see if the backup can proceed. I'm not a Windows developer so can't write this up myself. Presumably the encoding of the file name should be stored in the FS somewhere and therefore it should be possible to expose this.

  • Windows cannot open directory with too long name created by Linux

    - by Tim
Hello! My laptop has two OSes: Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. A partition of Windows 7 of format NTFS is mounted in Ubuntu. In Ubuntu, I created a directory under somehow deep path and with a long name for itself, specifically, the name for that directory is "a set of size-measurable subsets ie sigma algebra". Now in Windows, I cannot open the directory, which I guess is because of the name is too long, nor can I rename it. I was wondering if there is some way to access that directory under Windows? Better without changing the directory if possible, but will have to if necessary. Thanks and regards! Update: This is the output using "DIR /X" in cmd.exe, which does not shorten the directory name: F:\science\math\Foundations of mathematics\set theory\whether element of a set i s also a set\when element is set\when element sets are subsets of a universal se t\closed under some set operations\sigma algebra of sets>DIR /X Volume in drive F is Data Volume Serial Number is 0492-DD90 Directory of F:\science\math\Foundations of mathematics\set theory\whether elem ent of a set is also a set\when element is set\when element sets are subsets of a universal set\closed under some set operations\sigma algebra of sets 03/14/2011 10:43 AM <DIR> . 03/14/2011 10:43 AM <DIR> .. 03/08/2011 10:09 AM <DIR> a set of size-measurable sub sets ie sigma algebra 02/12/2011 04:08 AM <DIR> example 02/17/2011 12:30 PM <DIR> general 03/13/2011 02:28 PM <DIR> mapping from sigma algebra t o R or C i.e. measure 02/12/2011 04:10 AM <DIR> msbl mapping from general ms bl space to Borel msbl R or C 02/12/2011 04:10 AM 4,928 new file~ 03/14/2011 10:42 AM <DIR> temp 03/02/2011 10:58 AM <DIR> with Cartesian product of se ts 1 File(s) 4,928 bytes 9 Dir(s) 39,509,340,160 bytes free

  • How can I automate or script daily downloads for any new anti- virus databases, and then have the program scan my drive?

    - by Macgrimm
Howdy all Super Users" I humbly ask if any Super User can direct this long time, gray haired Apple Tech in the right direction on this issue. I believe there probably are many ways to skin this cat. But I am looking to find simply the best, most unattended way to get it done. Any help will be greatly appreciated. also (I know there are much better softwares out there for the Mac so please don't go there! The politics of this company dictate which Anti virus we have to use) anyway without any further wait: basically I am trying to automate 2 very important functions of Mc'Afee anti-virus for Mac. First I want to automate the process of retrieving new virus definition files, and second I want to automate the process of scanning for viruses. It turns out that Using Mc'Afee Anti-Virus for the Mac are both manual functions. And they left up to the user (per user account) to perform. Depending on all of about 150 MAc users to perform these 2 tasks themselves is around 65% compliance. My question then is: If I wanted to use the command line such as (open /Applications/McAfee\ Security.app) It will open up the Security Console. But how can I make command Mc'Afee go out and grab the definition files and scan the computer? I have to admit I am at a crossroad and Macaltimers has set in. I would really appreciate it if any of you "Super ~ Users" can help me out with this MacAltimers loss of how to what to do. Thanks to All up Front Macgrimm

  • IIS 7: launch unique site instance per host name

    - by OlduwanSteve
Is it possible to configure IIS 7 so that a single site with multiple bindings (or wildcard bindings) will launch a unique instance for each unique host name? To explain why this is desirable, we have an application that retrieves its configuration from a remote system. The behaviour of the application is governed by this configuration and not by the 'web.config'. The application uses its host name as a key to retrieve the configuration. Currently it is a manual process to create an identical IIS site for each instance of the application, differing only by the bindings. My thought, if it were possible, is that it would be nice to have one IIS site that effectively works as a template for an arbitrary number of dynamic sites. Whenever it is accessed by a unique host name a new instance of the site would be launched, and all further requests to that host name would go to that instance just as though I had created the site by hand. I use IIS regularly, but only for fairly straightforward site hosting. I'd like to know if this could be configured with vanilla IIS 7, but would also welcome answers that require a plugin or 3rd party product. Programming/architectural suggestions about changes to the app wouldn't really be appropriate for serverfault.

  • Not having address/phone number in WHOIS database?

    - by HighCommander4
When I sign up for an account with a domain name registrar like 10dollar.ca, it asks for my address and phone number. Will these show up when someone does a WHOIS lookup on my domain name? I noticed that when you do a WHOIS lookup on some websites (e.g. http://www.chrismanieri.ca), no address/phone number comes up. I want mine to be like that, too (don't want my address/phone number exposed to the public).

  • Not All “Viruses” Are Viruses: 10 Malware Terms Explained

    - by Chris Hoffman
Most people seem to call every type of malware a “virus”, but that isn’t technically accurate. You’ve probably heard of many more terms beyond virus: malware, worm, Trojan, rootkit, keylogger, spyware, and more. But what do all these terms mean? These terms aren’t just used by geeks. They make their way into even mainstream news stories about the latest web security problems and tech scares. Understanding them will help you understand the dangers your\ hear about. Malware The word “malware” is short for “malicious software.” Many people use the word “virus” to indicate any type of harmful software, but a virus is actually just a specific type of malware. The word “malware” encompasses all harmful software, including all the ones listed below. Virus Let’s start with viruses. A virus is a type of malware that copies itself by infecting other files,  just as viruses in the real world infect biological cells and use those biological cells to reproduce copies of themselves. A virus can do many different things — watch in the background and steal your passwords, display advertisements, or just crash your computer — but the key thing that makes it a virus is how it spreads. When you run a virus, it will infect programs on your computer. When you run the program on another computer, the virus will infect programs on that computer, and so on. For example, a virus might infect program files on a USB stick. When the programs on that USB stick are run on another computer, the virus runs on the other computer and infects more program files. The virus will continue to spread in this way. Worm A worm is similar to a virus, but it spreads a different way. Rather than infecting files and relying on human activity to move those files around and run them on different systems, a worm spreads over computer networks on its own accord. For example, the Blaster and Sasser worms spread very quickly in the days of Windows XP because Windows XP did not come properly secured and exposed system services to the Internet. The worm accessed these system services over the Internet, exploited a vulnerability, and infected the computer. The worm then used the new infected computer to continue replicating itself. Such worms are less common now that Windows is properly firewalled by default, but worms can also spread in other ways — for example, by mass-emailing themselves to every email address in an effected user’s address book. Like a virus, a worm can do any number of other harmful things once it infects a computer. The key thing that makes it a worm is simply how it spreads copies of itself. Trojan (or Trojan Horse) A Trojan horse, or Trojan, is a type of malware that disguises itself as a legitimate file. When you download and run the program, the Trojan horse will run in the background, allowing third-parties to access your computer. Trojans can do this for any number of reasons — to monitor activity on your computer, to join your computer to a botnet. Trojans may also be used to open the floodgates and download many other types of malware onto your computer. The key thing that makes this type of malware a Trojan is how it arrives. It pretends to be a useful program and, when run, it hides in the background and gives malicious people access to your computer. It isn’t obsessed with copying itself into other files or spreading over the network, as viruses and worms are. For example, a piece of pirated software on an unscrupulous website may actually contain a Trojan. Spyware Spyware is a type of malicious software that spies on you without your knowledge. It collects a variety of different types of data, depending on the piece of spyware. Different types of malware can function as spyware — there may be malicious spyware included in Trojans that spies on your keystrokes to steal financial data, for example. More “legitimate” spyware may be bundled along with free software and simply monitor your web browsing habits, uploading this data to advertising servers so the software’s creator can make money from selling their knowledge of your activities. Adware Adware often comes along with spyware. It’s any type of software that displays advertising on your computer. Programs that display advertisements inside the program itself aren’t generally classified as malware. The kind of “adware” that’s particularly malicious is the kind that abuses its access to your system to display ads when it shouldn’t. For example, a piece of harmful adware may cause pop-up advertisements to appear on your computer when you’re not doing anything else. Or, adware may inject additional advertising into other web pages as you browse the web. Adware is often combined with spyware — a piece of malware may monitor your browsing habits and use them to serve you more targeted ads. Adware is more “socially acceptable” than other types of malware on Windows and you may see adware bundled with legitimate programs. For example, some people consider the Ask Toolbar included with Oracle’s Java software adware. Keylogger A keylogger is a type of malware that runs in the background, recording every key stroke you make. These keystrokes can include usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, and other sensitive data. The keylogger then, most likely, uploads these keystrokes to a malicious server, where it can be analyzed and people can pick out the useful passwords and credit card numbers. Other types of malware can act as keyloggers. A virus, worm, or Trojan may function as a keylogger, for example. Keyloggers may also be installed for monitoring purposes by businesses or even jealous spouses. Botnet, Bot A botnet is a large network of computers that are under the botnet creator’s control. Each computer functions as a “bot” because it’s infected with a specific piece of malware. Once the bot software infects the computer, ir will connect to some sort of control server and wait for instructions from the botnet’s creator. For example, a botnet may be used to initiate a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack. Every computer in the botnet will be told to bombard a specific website or server with requests at once, and such millions or requests can cause a server to become unresponsive or crash. Botnet creators may sell access to their botnets, allowing other malicious individuals to use large botnets to do their dirty work. Rootkit A rootkit is a type of malware designed to burrow deep into your computer, avoiding detection by security programs and users. For example, a rootkit might load before most of Windows, burying itself deep into the system and modifying system functions so that security programs can’t detect it. A rootkit might hide itself completely, preventing itself from showing up in the Windows task manager. The key thing that makes a type of malware a rootkit is that it’s stealthy and focused on hiding itself once it arrives. Ransomware Ransomware is a fairly new type of malware. It holds your computer or files hostage and demands a ransom payment. Some ransomware may simply pop up a box asking for money before you can continue using your computer. Such prompts are easily defeated with antivirus software. More harmful malware like CryptoLocker literally encrypts your files and demands a payment before you can access them. Such types of malware are dangerous, especially if you don’t have backups. Most malware these days is produced for profit, and ransomware is a good example of that. Ransomware doesn’t want to crash your computer and delete your files just to cause you trouble. It wants to take something hostage and get a quick payment from you. So why is it called “antivirus software,” anyway? Well, most people continue to consider the word “virus” synonymous with malware as a whole. Antivirus software doesn’t just protect against viruses, but against all types of malware. It may be more accurately referred to as “antimalware” or “security” software. • Prefix files with the current directory name using Powershell

    - by XST
    I have folders with images (*.png and *.jpg) >C:\Directory\Folder1 01.png 02.png 03.jpg 04.jpg 05.png And I want to rename all the files like this using powershell: >C:\Directory\Folder1 Folder1 - 01.png Folder1 - 02.png Folder1 - 03.jpg Folder1 - 04.jpg Folder1 - 05.png So I came up with this simple line: Get-ChildItem | Where-Object { $_.Extension -eq ".jpg" -or $_.Extension -eq ".png"} | rename-item -newname {$_.Directory.Name +" - " + $_.Name} If I have 35 or less files in the folder, I will have the wanted result, but if there is 36 or more files, I will end up with this: >C:\Directory\Folder1 Folder1Folder1Folder1 - 01.png Folder1Folder1Folder1 - 02.png Folder1Folder1Folder1 - 03.jpg Folder1Folder1Folder1 - 04.jpg Folder1Folder1Folder1 - 05.png The loop stops when the file's name exceeds 248 characters. Any ideas why it's looping?

  • Configure IIS to rewrite IP Address to Site Name

    - by Bath Man
So i've started my first web site from home, and I'm trying to get it up and running and google crawlable and the like, but I can't seem to figure out how to have my site name returned in the address bar instead of my IP address. I've purchased a domain name for my site on Godaddy and then set it to redirect to my site. When you type in the domain name, you get redirected to http://0.0.0.0/default.aspx (not my real IP obviously), and that stays in the user's address bar. In order to fix that temporarily, I've set up masking on Go Daddy which keeps the URL in the address bar, but just shows my website in a frame. This is fine for users visiting the site, however any kind of automated robot such as GoogleBot cannot discover my content because of the frame. I've looked into ISAPI filters and server-site-rewriting, and the like... but I just can't quite figure out how to do what I need it to do. Any simple suggestions or links would be appreciated.

Wait a few minutes and run the wizard again. An unknown error occurred. Please wait a few minutes and then try again". These are the options that I selected in the Wizard: I want to set up a new domain name Get a personalized domain name from Microsoft Entered my Windows live id and password xxxx.remotewebaccess.com And on the next page the error is displayed. I have setup my router (Linksys WRT160N) to forward all TCP traffic to the Server. UPnP is also enabled. • Update the remote of a git branch after name changing

    - by Dror
Consider the following situation. A remote repository has two branches master and b1. In addition it has two clones repo1 and repo2 and both have b1 checked out. At some point, in repo1 the name of b1 was changed. As far as I can tell, the following is the right procedure to change the name of b1: $ git branch b1 b2 # changes the name of b1 to b2 $ git push remote :b1 # delete b1 remotely $ git push --set-upstream origin b2 # create b2 remotely and direct the local branch to track the remote 1 Now, afterwards, in repo2 I face a problem. git pull doesn't pull the changes from the branch (which is now called remotely b2). The error returned is: Your configuration specifies to merge with the ref 'b1' from the remote, but no such ref was fetched. What is the right way to do this? Both the renaming part and the updating in other clones?

  • Looking for Primos "name generation" code

    - by Greg E
Anyone remember Primos ? It had a shell-level thing called "name generation" which was very useful. Eg. to rename a bunch of files from part1.suffix to part1.new.suffix2 you could say rename *.suffix =.+new.suffix2 That's a very simple example, it was quite powerful. The control characters were: =,==,^=,^==,+ Which meant approximately: match 1 filename component, match all remaining components, delete one component, delete all remaining, add a component. In conjunction with Primos wildcards you could do pretty much any useful file renaming/copying operation very conveniently. It was much better than Unix wildcards and name generation/iteration and I'd like to find it again and use it. Anyone seen it around ? Not much reference on the interweb: search "Primos name generation" and you get a few fragmentary hits. Thanks !

  • How to Zone Forward to a List of Alternative Name Servers in pfSense 2.0.1

    - by Bob B.
I'm not sure if dnsmasq is involved in this process on pfSense or not. Before pfsense, we'd do this in BIND thusly: zone "firstpartner.com" { type forward; forwarders { 1.2.3.4; 5.6.7.8; w.x.y.z; }; I'm intentionally over-explaining this in the interests of specificity: We currently use dnsmasq to direct local queries for our primarydomain.com. Anything that doesn't match a host override entry in pfSense gets passed off to our external name servers, as defined elsewhere in pfSense. There are certain other zones which are not publicly accessible, let's call them firstpartner.com and secondpartner.com that each have various subdomains that their own name servers handle. I need a way to define a list of name server IPs for each domain zone (see BIND example above). Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

  • word 2010 Macro to name and Save file when opened

    - by Phillip Clark
I have a word document template and will be using a hyper link in Excel to access the word file. The issue I need to resolve is making sure once it is opened a message field box is "popped" up asking the user to create a new file name ... (in this case the current date) for each time the file is opened. In the message pop when finished entering in file name they click yes and then the save screen comes up with the path/file type (macro enabled document) and the file name they have already entered in the pop up.. All they should have to do from the save screen is click ok and it saves the file to a certain path/folder on the C drive of the computer. Once they finish typing in their notes they click a active x button to save and close and they are finished. If anyone can help with this it would be fantastic.

  • How can I display host name on windows desktop

    - by Martin
I do a lot of work on Windows Server 2008 remote desktops and often lose track of which host I am currently logged on to. Is there a way of displaying (without installing any non-standard apps) the host name or IP address of the host I am connected to in either the wallpaper or the notification area? I tried creating files in the desktop with the name of the machine - but my roaming profile shows the same set of desktop files on every machine, so that was scuppered. Duh! In shell windows this is easy: just set the prompt to display the host name. Surely there is a simple way of doing the same for the graphical desktop.

The problem is that when WHM takes a daily backup, it outputs are message such as DBD::mysql::st execute failed: There is no such grant defined for user 'abc' on host 'myhostname' The problem is solved when I remove skip-name-resolve from my my.cnf file. Tough I dont find any differences in the speed (when I dont add it), it is often mentioned in forums that adding skip-name-resolve optimizes Mysql Performance. Does adding skip-name-resolve really help, if one has a Dedicated server?

  • Can't access link in network using fully qualified domain name

    - by user1033715
I have installed windows server 2003 and configured Domain controller (domain name - xyz.com) and DNS service. for that I have configured fully qualified domain name as server.xyz.com also I have installed apache tomcat with port 8080 on that server and accessed link successfully using "http://localhost:8080", "http://ip address of server:8080", "http://server.xyz.com:8080". but its working for local machine, and when I tried to access it from another machine in same network using "http://ip address of server:8080" its worked for me. but when I tried it using fully qualified domain name i.e. "http://server.xyz.com:8080" it's giving me error, "Could not connect to server.xyz.com" Please guide me getting this setup done. I need to be able to access this link "http://ip address of server:8080" as "http://server.xyz.com:8080" outside my network Any suggestion are highly appreciated..

  • Need help with cybersquatting complaint: can a domain name forward AND resolve at same time? [on hold]

    - by Alan
Probably a silly question for you pros... but for this novice here, I just want to make sure my understanding is correct. Context: I am trying to prove that a domain name owner has been cybersquatting and has never used the domain name in question. There are 4 shots from WayBackMachine over a three-year period that show the domain name resolving to a basic server index page with either no files or a single cgi-bin folder. The domain name owner claims, however, that the domain name was forwarded over the entire time from to another website, and that these captures probably coincided with occasional "outages." It is my understanding that: a) domain name forwarding is binary: if a domain name is forwarded to a valid site, it cannot simultaneously resolve to a valid IP address. Is this correct? b) domain name forwarding is not subject to "outages": servers can have outages, and websites can be down, but the forwarding itself cannot be down, as this is simply a pointer. (Or, the entire registrar where the DNS settings are hosted would have to malfunction. Is this correct? FINALLY, bonus question for pro webmasters: What is the likelihood that the WayBackMachine would capture the domain name on just those occasions when the webmaster disabled forwarding to supposedly work on the new site? Mucho thanks in advance!
