    This is probably an easy one, but is the right way to calculate volume for a sphere in c++. My getArea() seems to be right, but when I call getVolume() it doesn't output the right amount.   • SSIS – Delete all files except for the most recent one

    Quite often one or more sources for a data warehouse consist of flat files. Most of the times these files are delivered as a zip file with a date in the file name, for example FinanceDataExport_20100528.zip Currently I work at a project that does a full load into the data warehouse every night. A zip file with some flat files in it is dropped in a directory on a daily basis. Sometimes there are multiple zip files in the directory, this can happen because the ETL failed or somebody puts a new zip file in the directory manually. Because the ETL isn’t incremental only the most recent file needs to be loaded. To implement this I used the simple code below; it checks which file is the most recent and deletes all other files.   • JSP Include: one large bean or bean for each include

    I want to refactor a webapp that consists of very distorted JSPs and servlets. Because we can't switch to a web framework easily we have to keep JSPs and Servlets, and now we are in doubt how to include pages into another and how to setup the use:bean-directives effectively. At the first step we want to decouple the code for the core-actions and the bean-creation into servlets. The servlets should forward to their corresponding pages, which should use the bean. The problem here is, that each jsp consists of different sub- and sub-sub-jsp that are included into another. Here is a shortend extract (because reality is more complex): head header top navigation actionspanel main header actionspanel foot footer Moreover each jsp (also the header and footer) use dynamic data. For example title and actionspanel can change on each page-reload or do have links and labels that depend on the processing by the preceding servlet. I know that jsp-include-directives should only be used for static content und should be avoided for dynamic content. But here we have very large pages, that consist of many parts. Now the core questions: Should I use one big bean for each page, so that each bean holds also data for header and footer beside its core data, so that each subsequent included jsp uses the same bean-directive? For example: DirectoryJSP <- DirectoryBean CompareJSP <- CompareBean Or should I use one bean for each jsp, so that each bean only holds the data for one jsp and its own purpose. For example: DirectoryJSP <- DirectoryBean HeaderJSP <- HeaderBean FooterJSP <- FooterBean CompareJSP <- CompareBean HeaderJSP <- HeaderBean FooterJSP <- FooterBean In the second case: should the subsequent beans be a member of the corresponding parent bean, so that only the parent bean is attached as attribute to the request?   • How does one network at software conferences?

    Well... I'm still at Microsoft TechEd -- and the response to my last question was overwhelmingly "networking is the most useful part of software conferences". Problem: I have no idea how to even approach that task. I've always been kind of an introvert. At school and at work I've generally not had issues because there are enough extroverts around that approach me that I've made some awesome friends over the years. However, at conferences, it seems most are introverted like myself, and those who aren't seem to be salespeople. The couple of times I've felt okay approaching people it's been after a session where there's been healthy discussion throughout the whole room, and just when I get the nerve to go up and talk to some people, they leave and go on to other things. Are there books I can read? Advice I can take? Anything as far as approaching people one does not know? 'Cause every time I try I just feel like an awkward mess. :( (Oddly enough, I don't have problems speaking to a group of people -- it's the one-on-one things that trip me up :P) (Oh, and by the way, if anyone from here is also there and would like to meet to talk about things, I'm game :P)

  • How does one escape the GPL?

    DISCLAIMER I don't pretend to know anything about licensing. In fact, everything I say below may be completely false! Backstory: Recently, I've been looking for a decent game engine, and I think I've found one that I really like, Cafu Engine. However, they have a dual licensing plan, where everything you make with the engine is forced under GPL, unless you pay for a commercial license. I'm not saying that it's a bad engine, they even say that they are very relaxed about the licensing fees. However, the fact that it even involves the GPL scares me. So my question is basicly, how does one escape the GPL. Here's an example: The id Tech engine, also known as the Quake engine, or the Doom engine, was the base for the popular Source engine. However, the id Tech engine has been released under the GPL, and the Source engine is proprietary. Did Valve get a different license? Or did they do something to escape the GPL? Is there a way to escape the GPL? Or, if you use GPL'd source code as a base for another project, are you forced to use the GPL, and make your source code available to the world. Could some random person take the id Tech engine, modify it past the point of recognition, then use it as a proprietary engine for commercial products? Or are they required to make it open source. One last thing, I generally have no problem what-so-ever with open source. However I feel that open source has it's place, but that is not in the bushiness world.

  • Pattern for a class that does only one thing

    Let's say I have a procedure that does stuff: void doStuff(initalParams) { ... } Now I discover that "doing stuff" is quite a compex operation. The procedure becomes large, I split it up into multiple smaller procedures and soon I realize that having some kind of state would be useful while doing stuff, so that I need to pass less parameters between the small procedures. So, I factor it out into its own class: class StuffDoer { private someInternalState; public Start(initalParams) { ... } // some private helper procedures here ... } And then I call it like this: new StuffDoer().Start(initialParams); or like this: new StuffDoer(initialParams).Start(); And this is what feels wrong. When using the .NET or Java API, I always never call new SomeApiClass().Start(...);, which makes me suspect that I'm doing it wrong. Sure, I could make StuffDoer's constructor private and add a static helper method: public static DoStuff(initalParams) { new StuffDoer().Start(initialParams); } But then I'd have a class whose external interface consists of only one static method, which also feels weird. Hence my question: Is there a well-established pattern for this type of classes that have only one entry point and have no "externally recognizable" state, i.e., instance state is only required during execution of that one entry point?

  • Freescale One Box Unboxing (then installing Java SE Embedded technology)

    So, I get a FedEx delivery the other day... "What cool device could be inside this FedEx Overnight Express Large Box?" I was wondering... Could it be a new Linux/ARM target device board, faster than a Raspberry Pi and better than a BeagleBone Black??? Why, yes! Yes, it was a Linux/ARM target device board, faster than anything around! It was a Freescale i.MX6 Sabre Smart Device Board (SDB)! Cool... Quad Core ARM Cortex A9 1GHz with 1GB of RAM. So, cool... I installed the Freescale One Box OpenWRT Linux image onto its SD card and booted it up into Linux. But, wait! One thing was missing... What was it? What could be missing? Why, it had no Java SE Embedded installed on it yet, of course! So, I went to the JDK 7u45 download link. Clicked on "Accept License Agreement", and clicked on "jdk-7u45-linux-arm-vfp-sflt.tar.gz", installed the bad boy, and all was good. Java SE Embedded 7u45 on a Freescale One Box. Nice... Hinkmond

It does not need to know the class definition, so I don't want to include the model header file.   • Only one user can connect to Ubuntu samba server

    I setup a samba server on 12.04 LTS, and it works great for one user but not the others. I am trying to map a network drive from a windows 7 laptop. I can successfully authenticate with one user, but the other two both get "Access is denied" errors. Here is my smb.conf file.   • Am I running out of memory or do I have two logical drives instead of one

    I did a complete reinstall of Ubuntu 13.04 a couple of months ago. Since then, I have switched out my motherboard with another. I kept the same hard drive. I just did an upgrade to 13.10. Recently, after this install, I keep getting the message that I'm running out of memory. I just checked my system usage and was surprised by what I found. I believed that I installed Ubuntu as a fresh install but when I check the system usage, it seems like there are two logical drives. I just did the basic install, so I was only expecting to see one partition but instead I see two. One is a small 300mb partition, the other is a 300gb partition I was expecting. Can anyone tell me if I have two partitions and/or logical drives and if so how I can fix this? I seem to have been running on the smaller drive and now I'm obviously out of space. I want to be able to use the bigger one at least.

    We all need java script for our web application and we storing our JavaScript code in .js files. Now If we have more then .js file then our browser will create a new request for each .js file. Which is a little overhead in terms of performance. If you have very big enterprise application you will have so much over head for this. Asp.net Script Manager provides a feature to combine multiple JavaScript into one request but you must remember that this feature will be available only with .NET Framework 3.5 sp1 or higher versions.  Let’s take a simple example.     I need to make a tv that shows the user the channel and the volume, and shows whether or not the television is on. I have the majority of the code made, but for some reason the channels won't switch. I'm fairly unfamiliar with how properties work, and I think that's what my problem here is.   • Avoiding resource (localizable string) duplication with String.Format

    I'm working on a application (.NET, but not relevant) where there is large potential for resource/string duplication - most of these strings are simple like: Volume: 33 Volume: 33 (dB) Volume 33 dB Volume (dB) Command - Volume: 33 (dB) where X, Y and unit are the same. Should I define a new resource for each of the string or is it preferable to use String.Format to simplify some of these, eg.: String.Format("{0}: {1}", Resource.Volume, 33) String.Format("{0}: {1} {2}", Resource.Volume, 33, Resource.dB) Resource.Volume String.Format("{0} ({1})", 33, Resource.dB) String.Format("{0} ({1})", Resource.Volume, Resource.dB) String.Format("Command - {0}: {1} {2}", Resource.Volume, 33, Resource.dB) I would also define string formats like "{0}: {1}" in the resources so there would be a possibility of reordering words... I would not use this approach selectivly and not throughout the whole application.. And how about: String.Format("{0}: {1}", Volume, Resource.Muted_Volume) // = Volume: Muted Resource.Muted_Volume String.Format("{0}: {1} (by user {2})", Volume, Resource.Muted_Volume, "xy") // = Volume: Muted (by user xy) The advantage is cutting the number of resource by the factor of 4-5. Are there any hidden dangers of using this approach? Could someone give me an example (language) where this would not work correctly?

    In Windows 7 Control Panel - Sound - Sound Properties window there's an slider for setting CD Audio volume: And it's pretty strange that I can't find corresponding one in generic Linux mixers: alsamixer or amixer. I connected a CD drive to try to set CD audio volume with cdcd (CD Player): $ cdcd setvol 0 Invalid volume It isn't actually an invalid volume, it is because ioctl() call fails.
