prevent domain controller using wpad for windows update

We have a 2012 domain controller in an environment where we are running a web proxy auto discovery (WPAD) setup for client devices, and that proxy server requires authentication. However windows update does not support proxy servers requiring authentication. So we want to prevent windows update on our servers from using the WPAD proxy settings. On a domain member server we can log in to the local administrator account (not domain admin) and un-tick the the "Auto detect proxy settings" in IE internet options and that fixes the issue on those servers. But a domain controller does not have a local admin account, as that account is the domain admin account. Doing this to the domain admin account on the DC does not prevent it from using WPAD. Our whole purpose of running a proxy server that requires authentication is so we can identify what the users on our session based remote desktop servers are doing on the internet. hello, I have a WinXP 32 host (IBM T400) with VWware workstation 7 (7.0.1 build-227600) and some guest OS (Win xp, NT, etc.) I can ping from the host to guest OS and vice versa, but... every other "protocols" do not work at all. No http from host to guest, no CIFS, nothing, nothing, nothing. Windows firewall is turned off, TCP/IP filer is turned off. i re-installed VMware workstation, then the networking started working again, but, after some reboots... it stopped again. Connectivity among guest OS... it works FINE. Can not understand... problems exist just between host and guest. Host-only or NAT... it is the same. Any suggestion?

Ubuntu 12.04 Netinstall URL? Xen Host

Well I have an Xen server, I've got a CentOS container up fine but a friend of mine wants (oh god) Ubuntu Server 12.04, why he can't use Debian is beyond my understanding. But anyways, I can't remember how I installed the CentOS container but I'm giving virt-manager a try now, since I don't have a disk image already the only option is to get a Network Install URL since I'm using PV. So does anyone know what I should type in there, if it was CentOS I could easily type http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6.2/os/i386 for example. The furthest I've got in finding a suitable URL is http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/ but that of course wont work. Any ideas?

Windows 8 Restore Problems

I created a Windows 8 system image backup on a separate drive before I installed Linux, and during the Linux installation process I accidentally wiped out Windows. I now want to restore my Windows 8 backup that I have on the separate drive. I created a repair USB stick and I followed the directions according to this article. After selecting the image on the hard drive, I get this error: "To restore this computer, Windows needs to format the hard drive." I don't know what this means! The drive partitions are different now then they were when I backup up, so I don't know if that matters. I re-installed Windows and I can restore my files from this backup, but I don't think this covers the registry, etc. I want a full restore. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or how to restore in a different way? Thanks!

Reading PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5 files in an XP or Windows 98 environment

Hello all, My priest has 3 computers, Windows 3.1, Windows 98 and Windows XP. Recently his power supply blew out on his Windows 3.1 computer and he needs to get to the data on the hard drive. He's looking into imaging the hard drive and setting it up as a VM, which might be a bit much for him. Ignoring getting the data off the hard drive as a separate problem, are there any programs out there that can read files from PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5. He already has Microsoft Office so solutions involving that are preferable. If he can install the software on his Windows XP or 98 computer, that would be helpful too. Thank you for your help

DYNDNS setup with TightVNC on Windows Server 2008 R2

Hey all, i seem to be having a problem with getting ports to forward on my Windows Server 2008 R2 PC. I already set all my port forwarding for 5900/5800 on my router for my PC's IP address (192.168.1.22) but when i try to use the TightVNC PFPortChecker on port 5900 it tells me its not opened! I can not even connect to my DYNDNS server name (xxxxxxx.dyndns.org). As a side note, i am running Windows XP SP3 within a VirtaulBox inside Windows Server 2008 R2 but running the PFPortChecker in Windows 2008 R2 brings the same results as it does in the VM. I also added them to the Windows Firewall Advanced Security form to add those inbound ports for full access. What could i possibly be missing? Thanks for your time! David

Apache disabled virtual host domains resolve an enabled virtual host

I have three virtual hosts defined on apache on my Ubuntu server for three different domains. If I disable two of the virtual hosts (a2dissite) and try to resolve those two URL's in the browser, then the one remaining enabled site will resolve. How can I configure apache so that the domains for the disabled virtual hosts do not resolve? I've upgraded recently from Windows Vista to Windows 8. When I try to rate my computer, it accesses DirectX 9 performance, then processes to DirectX 10 tests: And it gets stuck at this point. In 5–10 minutes, it shows error message: The video card is rather old: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family. I'm pretty sure it does not support DirectX 10. Why does Windows assess it with DirectX 10? And how can I make it skip DirectX 10 tests and get the system rating? The driver was installed automatically by Windows 8 from Windows Update. Windows Live Writer fails to start

I installed windows live writer and configured it to connect to my xmlrpc enabled blog engine. After doing so, it threw an unrecoverable error and closed down. After attempting to restart windows live writer, it throws the following exception each time: Description: Windows Live Writer has encountered a problem: Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed. After that, I re-installed it and still get the error every time I try to launch the application. Does anyone know how I can get around this?

windows phone application repeatedly opens while phone is plugged in

I plugged my windows phone 8 phone into my Windows 8.1 computer for the first time. It asked what to do when a WP8 phone is plugged in. I chose "Open Windows Phone". All worked fine for about an hour. Now when I connect my phone, the Windows Phone application repeatedly opens. I can't even type in another window, as it continues to steal focus to "switch to" the Windows Phone application. Anyone have any ideas to fix this?

Can't connect to VPN in Windows XP mode

I have Windows 7 x32 installed on my laptop. I have also Windows XP mode installed. My setup is that my work-remote programs are in Windows XP mode because my VPN installer in Windows XP only. Lately, I have been having troubles getting on / logging in to VPN. I can access the internet in WinXP mode but When I ping the IP address of the target IP of my VPN network (or even just Google.com), I always get a 'Request Timeout'. However, when I ping the same IP address in command prompt in Windows 7, I get 100% data sent. Is there anything I need to adjust? Before, I have been able to connect instantly. Now, it's like trial and error, or I will have to wait for hours just to be able to enter logon credentials in Cisco VPN dialer. NAT is my network adapter in XP mode.

Accessing SQL Server in Windows XP Mode Virtual Pc

I have a laptop running 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate. I created a Virtual PC using Microsoft XP Mode. I've installed SQL Server 2000 on the Virtual Machine. I have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the Windows 7 machine (laptop). I can browse to the SQL 2000 instance (it sees it), but I cannot successfully connect using either Windows or SQL Server Authentication. I don't get an error, the attempt just times out. I have the Windows XP Mode Firewall turned off, and there doesn't appear to be anything in the Event logs either. Any ideas how I can query the XP Mode SQL Server from the Windows 7 machine?

Upgrading from Windows 8 RTM to Release, if there is a difference

So I'm kinda stuck in a hard place. I'm wanting to finally re-install Windows and looking at whether I should stick to tried and true Windows 7 or go with the funky and experimental Windows 8. As such I've virtualised Windows 8 RTM, looked at its features and GUI and I'm quite impressed, personally. So I'm willing to upgrade to it. However Windows 8's release is just under 50 days away according to Wikipedia and I'm impatient, so if I go to RTM and like it enough to continue using it, will I be able to go to "release" version and receive updates for it as normal or would I have to reinstall again?

How do I install and use Windows Virtual PC in Windows 8?

I really like the integrated Virtual Machine that Windows had built-in with Windows 7 with Windows Virtual PC. I'm looking to install that again. I'd like to be able to install multiple machines as I did before (XP, Ubuntu, Etc,.) but I can't seem to find Windows Virtual PC for Windows 8 any more. Is it still available?, and if not was there something setup in place to replace it? How do I use it? How to get a service to listen on port 80 on Windows Server 2003

I've coded a custom windows service that listens on TCP port 80 but when I try to install it on a Windows Server 2003 machine it fails to start because some other service is already listening on that port. So far I've disabled the IIS Admin service and the HTTP SSL service but no luck. When I run netstat -a -n -o | findstr 0.0:80 it gives me the process id 4 as the culprit, but when I look at the running processes that process id points to the "System" process. What can I do to get the System process to stop listening on port 80 and get my service to listen instead? P.S. I should point out that the service runs fine if I install it on my Windows XP or Windows 7 development boxes. Also, I should specify that this has nothing to do with it being a service. I've tried starting a regular application that attempts to bind to port 80 on the Windows Server 2003 with the same outcome - it fails because another application is already bound to that port.

How to search for a Windows 8 folder by name

In Windows 7, if you press the Windows key and type the name of a folder, and the folder shows up among the Start menu search results. In Windows 8, if you do the same thing, no folders are listed. The Files filter shows files with matching names, but no folders. I realize that you can still search for folders from the Windows Explorer search box, but navigating that way is a bit slow and clumsy. Is there a quicker way, in particular a way to search directly from the Windows 8 Start screen?

BSOD Error When Running Windows Phone Emulator

I am getting a BSOD Error when Running Windows Phone 7.1 Emulator on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, Each time I run the Emulator, it Results in Blue Screen. This is a Fresh Install, This Error also Occurred with my last Windows Install (That is why I formatted the Windows Again), I have already Tried to Re-install it, it also shows "Windows Phone Emulator is Doing a Complete OS boot" (Even at Fresh Install, I know it happens when using Unlocked Emulator Images). I am not able to Test any of my app. Please Help !! EDIT: I am not Running a VM, it is on a Physical Machine.

Windows 8 will not load color profiles - why?

I have a Spyder3Express color calibration device. Under Windows 7 the utility that came with it would happily load the custom profile I created with it without any hassles. Under Windows 8 (have just upgraded) there is no visible color shift when it says it has loaded the profile. I have gone into the Windows color management settings and when I select any profile and hit 'Set as Default' nothing happens. They all look the same. So Windows doesn't throw an error, but none of the profiles cause any color shifts at all. I have tried a large number of things, such as changing the global color settings for all user accounts and installing other color management software to see if it will load the profiles. The only way I can get a color shift is if I create a profile using Windows built in utility. Profiles created this way change the appearance of the screen, but any downloaded or created profiles make no difference. I am out of ideas. Please help :)

I had problems with web virus cake 3.00 and I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-WALWARE, I got rid of that virus but I did other problems. When I open my PC appears to skype error "exception in module Skype.exe at 0013CE7D.The EOleSysError RPC server is unavailable" and another one "Error in C: \ WINDOWS \ system32 \ Nvcpl.Dll Missing entry: NnStartup" when I install / uninstall a program says "Windows Installer service Could you not be accessed. This CAN occure if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not corectly installes. Contact your support personnel for assistance. I have tried many "solutions" but nothing worked. Please HELP! It windows xp sp 2

Can't create a new HomeGroup in Windows 8

I'm trying to create a new HomeGroup in Windows 8 for 2 new PCs with Windows 8 installed so that I can share printers etc. Both PCs use Microsoft Account to log in - a Microsoft Account I set up about a year ago with one of the early beta's with a PC that's since been repaved with the RTM of Windows 8 When I click on "HomeGroup" in the "Metro" control panel the "Create" option is not there. Instead I'm told that "HomeGroup" already exists on the PC I've since repaved and renamed and I can join it by entering the password. I have no recollection of what the password might have been and in any event that PC doesn't exist, but there is no way to say "That group doesn't exist anymore just create me a new one dammit". Even using the old Control Panel the "HomeGroup" nonsense persists with the only option being "Join" that needs a password. How do I "start afresh" and create a new HomeGroup that I can use to connect my Windows 8 and Windows 7 PCs and use common printers, network drives etc.
