• Lost the config of my monitor once I connected it to a KVM switch.

  I used to have a monitor (Acer 20", AL2017) connected to the external video port of my laptop. Everything was great and I could get a rather high resolution available when setting it under Ubuntu (all versions). But since I connected it to a KVM, the monitor is no more recognized, and I cannot go beyond 1024x768. My video adapter is an Intel chipset 9xx from an older Pentium Core 2 Duo laptop. The same monitor, using another video chipset (Intel 82G33/G31 rev 02) is properly detected through the switch box. Looks to me like the video chipset is not the best, and I can live with this. I see that I have no xorg.conf, and I understand that I would need to generate one so I can then use it to force the available modes on the X system. How can I generate the xorg.conf file for my Intel video chip, so I can use it then ? Merci :-)

• Samsung 305u notebook touchpad not working in Ubuntu 13.10

  I just installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my Samsung 305u notebook. The problem is that the touchpad (cursor and clicking) doesn't work, it does nothing. The only way to fix it is to plug an external mouse, which isn't the optimal. I already checked the system preferences and the touchpad is enabled. I used Ubuntu 13.04 before, and it worked. Then I installed Linux Mint and the touchpad stopped working, that's way I installed 13.10, but now it doesn't work here either. I hope someone can help me.

• Apache2 Unwantingly Allowing Proxy Requests

  I'm not sure if this is the right location, but this is fairly urgent. I have completely removed all traces of mod_proxy and the other mod_proxy mods, although the Apache server continues to allow proxy requests. I have restarted numerous times, and have shut down until I can find an answer. I've noticed lots of requests from IPs in and around China to external sites such as free movie downloads and such. I'd like to prevent this from happening. I'll be grateful for any help I get.

• How can I simulate objects floating on water without a physics engine?

  In my game the water movement is done in a shader using Gerstner equations. The water movement looks realistic enough for a school project but I encounter serious problem when I wanted to do sailing on waves (similar to this). I managed to do collision with land by calculating quad's vertices and normals beneath ship, however same method can not be applied to water because XZ are displaced and Y is calculated in a shader :( How to approach this problem ? Is it possible to retrieve transformed grid from shader? Unfortunately no external physics libraries can be used.

  I am setting up a headless music server based on the minimal Ubuntu image. After having installed the packages openssh-server,pulseaudio, libmad0,flac,liboff0,libid3tag0,libvorbis0a,ffmpeg, mpd,mpc,mpdscribble, paman,paprefs,pavumeter neither my internal soundcard nor the external DAC where detected by pulseaudio, that is pactl list did only list the dummy devices. Several reboots did not change that. The hardware devices are detected properly: ~$ lsusb | grep Texas Bus 002 Device 002: ID 08bb:2706 Texas Instruments Japan ~$ lspci | grep Audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) Following a hunch, I installed vlc with all dependencies. After a reboot, both devices are detected! ~$ pactl list | grep "Sink: alsa_output" Monitor of Sink: alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo Monitor of Sink: alsa_output.usb-Burr-Brown_from_TI_USB_Audio_DAC-00-DAC.analog-stereo Now I would like to remove VLC again but keep the devices.   I'm having a really hard time finding a great alternative for Macbook Pro (I have a MB pro '08). I'd like to return to ubuntu and need a kick-ass laptop. If you help, you've lead me back to linux :) Req: ubuntu friendly lots of memory 8G+ ssd 160GB+ great processor (intel sandy?) connect up to three external displays. this triple display looks cool No optical drive, NO DVD 13-17" dock. In place of the ridiculous optical drive (It's like having a floppy drive IMO): extra battery? 2nd ssd? extra graphics card? your suggestion The laptop should be designed for not having dvd. I can't find many, unless they are tiny 11"... I'm exited to know your answers!

• How do I consistently activate USB speakers

  I have a pair of Ricco USB speakers. As these are external, I sought to use them with 11.10. They are recognised by 'aplay -l' and Pulseaudio- I have selected them, but, have to reset the volume, every time I log on. I can also only recieve feedback and sound from apps and programs- like Kaffeine- on this boosted volume- I cannot get System Sounds, like logon or logoff. I have tried the alsamixer install that used to work, to no effect. Is their an app that I should be trying or is this feat impossible ? I have tried to delete all the files in .pulse and rebooting or just deletion of the entire .purge directory, as Michael K suggested- neither work as the directory is automatically rewritten on reboot. Ideas?

• Infrared usb adapter not hot pluggable?

  For transferring exercise files from my Polar heart rate monitor i use the software Protrainer 5 with an external infrared usb adapter. Using Wine to run Protrainer 5 and some adjustments mentioned here (using irda-utils) i managed to make it work. Well, sort of: every time i want to transfer exercise files and the adapter is not plugged in i have to reboot my laptop with the usb adapter plugged in to make it work. Since i have a laptop it unfortunately is no option to just always leave the adapter in. It seems to me that the usb adapter isn't hot pluggable (which seems odd for a usb device) or there must be another problem. Polar WebLink (other software to transfer exercise files) experiences the same issue. Can anyone help me to fix this problem?   My company is a custom software services company for external clientes, which means our typical project is one in which the contract already states the full budget of the project. Our typical project starts by defining requirements (improving the proposal high-level requirements), then we code the project, test it and ship it. We have an acceptance phase were the client tests the software and in that phase we can usually implement small changes asked by the client, or we charge extra for change requests. In some projects we have intermediate releases so the clients can check the progress of the project and give feedback on it. In summary: something like waterfall... I've followed the "agile" movement for a bit now and I always see it being a good match for a "product" company, or a company building software for an internal client. But are there good stories / advantages on using agile methods in my kind of company/projects? What are your experiences, what do you think about this?

  I just got an HP Mini 110-3150, and booting from an external hard disk with Ubuntu 10.10 works all fine, except that there is no wireless detected. I noticed that the Wireless indicator is red under Ubuntu, but is enabled under whatever Windows 7 I got on it. So, I understand that it may not get detected at all by Ubuntu at startup time, and there is no manual switch that I can simply slide to turn on/off. How can I get the Wireless device turned ON by default at startup time, and is there any special driver I need to install (proprietary or not) to get it working ? Merci :-) Update: When actually installing on the computer, as a new install, the NIC is not detected at first, but upon restarting, I get a notification of a closed driver available for the wireless. Once installed, updated and restarted, it works fine.

• Why is using C++ libraries is so complicated?

  First of all, I want to note I love C++ and I'm one of those people who thinks it is easier to code in C++ than Java. Except for one tiny thing: libraries. In Java you can simply add some jar to the build path and you're done. In C++ you usually have to set multiple paths for the header files and the library itself. In some cases, you even have to use special build flags. I have mainly used Visual Studio, Code Blocks and no IDE at all. All 3 options do not differ much when talking about using external libraries. I wonder why was there made no simpler alternative for this? Like having a special .zip file that has everything you need in one place so the IDE can do all the work for you setting up the build flags. Is there any technical barrier for this?

• FTP over ssh hangs on "Connection established: Waiting for Welcome Message"

  I have looked far and wide and have not quite found the answer. I am running ubuntu 11.10, openssh, and vsftpd. I am trying to configure my FTP to tunnel over ssh. My ssh connection works just fine and I can create the tunnel to my FTP port. When I go to use Filezilla to connect, it hangs at "Waiting for Welcome Message". I think it is an iptables issue, but I can't seem to figure out what needs to be changed. When I take iptables down, it connects just fine. I don't want to open any more external ports, just my one SSH port, and I can't seem to get it right on the internal port forwarding rule. I always end up opening it to the outside. I would love some help if anyone has any ideas and I hope I have made it clear. Thank you in advance!!

• Volume setting isn't remembered after restart/shutdown

  This is my first time here and I'm new to linux and also to Ubuntu. I've installed first version 11.10 and there was some problems with the unity dock and also the problem with the volume not being remembered after restart or shutdown. I'm using dualboot with Windows 7. Ubuntu was installed after windows. I have 2 sound cards. One is onboard, on the motherboard, and the other is external, an E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 sound card. The last one is my primary sound card and I've choosed it as default output sound card. I've upgraded to 12.04 hopeing that this was fiex but even in this version the OS doesn't keep the volume where it was last time. The big problem is that sometimes I forget about this problem and start music and it starts at full volume and soon I think I will die of heart attack. Is there a way to make it remember or at least to tell him to start at a specific volume not at 100%?

  I'm working on a game I intend to sell, and I want to use this font. The license says: "You may NOT copy or distribute the font outside of the licensed household, company, school or institution. Please ask external contacts who want to use the font to purchase their own license at www.CheapProFonts.com." However, my plans are to use a tool to output a texture using this font to use as a bitmap font in my game. Does this mean I can do so, and sell my game with the font in it?

  I am currently building an internal employee dashboard for our global company (it is hosted on an external website for logistical reasons) I'd like (need) to password protect the page as we will be displaying sensitive information, my question is, is it possible to integrate with Outlook passwords? We have over 350 staff all of whom use outlook on a daily basis, I'd love for the website to check whether the visitor is logged into Outlook and if they're not, prompt them to log in. Is it possible?? If it is I'll get is developed straight away.
