• To Ajax or Not to Ajax a listing page

  Here i am talking about product listing pages where there are multiple filters that filter the list of products appearing on the page like product types, categories price range etc. I have done such pages using both ajax and no ajax way in the past. What I like about using ajax in such page is that, when filters are selected I only update the section that contains the product list. There is no need to refresh the whole page which could end up re-loading the images on top bar, banners etc and slow down the user performance. Ajax way in my opinion becomes more compact and responsive from user experience. Down side for ajax route for me is; since filter states are not maintained in the URL I end up maintaining them on the server. This becomes complicated if I want to handle multi window scenarios and it is also costly to maintain such state on server memory for each session. Not using ajax and simply keeping all filter values on url and refreshing the page is quite simple but the luxury of refreshing only the pane that really needs to be refreshed is lost. Lately I am seeing a lot of large scale e-commerce sites that are using non-ajax approach on their listing pages and this is making me question one more time if it might be more efficient to build non-ajax listing make due to the long term maintenance ease and sacrifice a little bit from user experience. I am about to start implementing a new listing page for a product which I have the flexibility to go either way and I would appreciate your inputs.

• Is there a workaround for JDBC w/liquibase and MySQL session variables & client side SQL instructions

  Slowly building a starter changeSet xml file for one of three of my employer's primary schema's. The only show stopper has been incorporating the sizable library of MySQL stored procedures to be managed by liquibase. One sproc has been somewhat of a pain to deal with: The first few statements go like use TargetSchema; select "-- explanatory inline comment thats actually useful --" into vDummy; set @@session.sql_mode='TRADITIONAL' ; drop procedure if exists adm_delete_stats ; delimiter $$ create procedure adm_delete_stats( ...rest of sproc I cut out the use statement as its counter-productive, but real issue is the set @@session.sql_mode statement which causes an exception like liquibase.exception.MigrationFailedException: Migration failed for change set ./foobarSchema/sprocs/adm_delete_stats.xml::1293560556-151::dward_autogen dward: Reason: liquibase.exception.DatabaseException: Error executing SQL ... And then the delimiter statement is another stumbling block. Doing do dilligence research I found this rejected MySQL bug report here and this MySQL forum thread that goes a little bit more in depth to the problem here. Is there anyway I can use the sproc scripts that currently exist with Liquibase or would I have to re-write several hundred stored procedures? I've tried createProcedure, sqlFile, and sql liquibase tags without much luck as I think the core issue is that set, delimiter, and similar SQL commands are meant to be interpreted and acted upon by the client side interpreter before being delivered to the server.

  The Replace Temp with Query refactoring method is recommended quite widely now but seems to be very inefficient for very little gain. The method from the Martin Fowler's site gives the following example: Extract the expression into a method. Replace all references to the temp with the expression. The new method can then be used in other methods. double basePrice = _quantity * _itemPrice; if (basePrice > 1000) return basePrice * 0.95; else return basePrice * 0.98; becomes if (basePrice() > 1000) return basePrice() * 0.95; else return basePrice() * 0.98; double basePrice() { return _quantity * _itemPrice; } Why is this a good idea? surely it means the calculation is needlessly repeated and you have the overhead of calling a function. I know CPU cycles are cheap but throwing them away like this seems careless? Am I missing something?

• Sending Email from Lotus Notes using Excel and having Attachment & HTML body

  Right I'm trying to send an Email form an excel spreadsheet though lotus notes, it has an attachment and the body needs to be in HTML. I've got some code that from all I've read should allow me to do this however it doesn't. Without the HTML body the attachment will send, when I impliment a HTML body the Email still sends but the attachment dissapears, I've tried rearanging the order of the code cutting out bits that might not be needed but all is invain. • is struts2 Framework dead? if so, which direction to go from here?

  I've been working in struts2 framework for the past year and a half. As I look around SO it seems like struts2 questions get the least amount of hits. At first I thought it was because the SO community is not much into struts2, but this is the case in other forums as well. Only the struts2 mailing list is pretty active. I think struts2 is slowly becoming a dinosaur framework and I want to move on. I've dabbled a little with other stuff like RoR, Grails, Django, .NET MVC but I've never really committed and made a pact with myself to sit down and learn these. Maybe its the fact that I dont know the languages that these frameworks are built on. Spending a day or two with RoR makes me want to choke some of the JAR files and struts2 html tags and .NET MVC looks promising but not knowing c# ties me back. My question is, have you been on the same path? Did anyone used to do struts2 before and now changed to something new? What would you suggest I learn after Struts2? And lastly, as a developer how do you motivate yourself to learn a new framework, or a language? for me, just typing the code provided in the book is dead boring.

• Background image in a JFrame.

  Hi, This question has been asked a lot but everywhere the answers fall short. I can get a JFrame to display a background image just fine by extending JPanel and overriding paintComponent, like so: class BackgroundPanel extends JPanel { private ImageIcon imageIcon; public BackgroundPanel() { this.imageIcon = Icons.getIcon("foo"); } @Override protected void paintComponent(Graphics g) { super.paintComponent(g); g.drawImage(imageIcon.getImage(), 0,0,imageIcon.getIconWidth(),imageIcon.getIconHeight(),this); } } But now, how do you add a component on top of that background? When I go JFrame w = new JFrame() ; Container cp = w.getContentPane(); cp.setLayout(null); BackgroundPanel bg = new BackgroundPanel(); cp.add(bg); JPanel b = new JPanel(); b.setSize(new Dimension(30, 40)); b.setBackground(Color.red); cp.add(b); w.pack() w.setVisible(true) It shows the little red square (or any other component) and not the background, but when I remove cp.setLayout(null);, the background shows up but not my other component. I'm guessing this has something to do with the paintComponent not being called by the null LayoutManager, but I'm not at all familiar with how LayoutManagers work (this is a project for college and the assignment specifically says not to use a LayoutManager) When i make the image the background has to display null (and so, transparant (??)) the red square shows up so it might be that the background is actually above my other components) Does anyone anyone have any ideas? • PHP File upload fails with blank screen when size exceeds 742 KB.

  Hi friends, This is one of the most bizarre errors I've come across. So I've written a little file upload web app for my friend and it works fine for any file less than or equal to 742kB in size. Needless to say, I arrived at this precise number based on relentless testing. Weird part is that if the file size is just a few KB more, for example 743 or 750, I get an error saying "MySQL has gone away". But if it is 1MB or more, then I just get a blank screen. And it happens in less than 2 seconds after I hit the upload button. So it doesn't look like a time-out to me. I checked out the PHP.ini file for post size and upload size, they are all set to 5 MB or more. And the timeout is set to 60 seconds. The uploaded file sits in MySQL database in a field of datatype mediumblob. I tried changing that to longblob. But that didn't help either. Any help? Thanks for reading, Girish

• Can't get any speedup from parallelizing Quicksort using Pthreads

  I'm using Pthreads to create a new tread for each partition after the list is split into the right and left halves (less than and greater than the pivot). I do this recursively until I reach the maximum number of allowed threads. When I use printfs to follow what goes on in the program, I clearly see that each thread is doing its delegated work in parallel. However using a single process is always the fastest. As soon as I try to use more threads, the time it takes to finish almost doubles, and keeps increasing with number of threads. I am allowed to use up to 16 processors on the server I am running it on. The algorithm goes like this: Split array into right and left by comparing the elements to the pivot. Start a new thread for the right and left, and wait until the threads join back. If there are more available threads, they can create more recursively. Each thread waits for its children to join. Everything makes sense to me, and sorting works perfectly well, but more threads makes it slow down immensely. I tried setting a minimum number of elements per partition for a thread to be started (e.g. 50000). I tried an approach where when a thread is done, it allows another thread to be started, which leads to hundreds of threads starting and finishing throughout. I think the overhead was way too much. So I got rid of that, and if a thread was done executing, no new thread was created. I got a little more speedup but still a lot slower than a single process. • ASP.NET/C# - Deserialize XML, XSD.exe created multiple classes

  I'm trying to deserialize some XML (returned from a web service) into an object that I created using XSD.exe. The XSD executable created a .CS file with a different partial class for each parent node in the XML. For Example, the beginning of the XML looks like this (why can't I post xml here? sorry, this is ugly): <disclaimer><notificationDescription>Additional charges will apply.</notificationDescription></disclaimer><quote><masterQuote></masterQuote></quote> And the Class generated by the XSD.exe has a partial class named disclaimer with a get; set; string for notificationDescription. And another partial class for quoteMasterQuote with the corresponding child nodes as public strings. How can I deserialize this XML file into multiple classes? • PHP, MySQL Per row output

  Been all over the place and spent 8 hours working loops and math...still cant get it... I am writing a CP for a customer. The input form will allow them to add a package deal to their web page. Each package deal is stored in mysql in the following format id header item1 item2 item3...item12 price savings The output is a table with 'header' being the name of the package and each item being 1 of the items in the package stored in a row within the table, then the price and amount saved (all of this is input via a form and INSERT statement by the customer, that part works) stored rows as well. Here is my PHP: include 'dbconnect.php'; $query = "SELECT * FROM md "; $result = mysql_query($query); while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { //Print 4 tables with header, items, price, savings //Go to next row (on main page) and print 4 more items //Do this until all tables have been printed } mysql_free_result($result); mysql_close($conn); ? Right now the main page is simpley a header div, main div, content wrap and footer div. Ideal HTML output of a 'package' table, not perfect and a little confusing $header $item1 $item2 ect... $price$savings I basically want the PHP to print this 4 times per row on the main page and then move to the next row and print 4 times and continue until there are no more items in the array. So it could be row 1 4 tables, row 2 4 tables, row 3 3 tables. Long, confusing and frustrating. I about to just do 1 item per row..please help Jake

  I need to implement time calculation for repository methods in my asp .net mvc project classes. The problem is that i need to send time calculation data to WCF Service which is time consuming. I think about threads which can help to cal WCF service asynchronously. But I have very little experience with it. Do I need to create new thread each time or I can create a global thread, if so then how? • Webservices on iPhone - wsdl2objc - Sample Code?

  I have recently downloaded the most recent build of this awesome tool WSDL2OBJC from google code here: http://code.google.com/p/wsdl2objc/ After a bit of tweaking and downloading the latest version of the trunk from the svn repo I got a version that created the code for a WSDL I am using and compiles great and actually installs on my phone! However, I'm not doing anything with it yet, because I am not really sure how to. There is very little in the way of sample code on the site, and there is a sample file in the project if you download it, but again it is very complicated and there are no real bits of documentation. Has anyone managed to successfully use this stuff? It seems SOOO powerful and useful but from a look around the Internet, no one knows how to use it. We (all) would love someone who has figured it out to post a simple project or detailed walk-through of implementing this so we can put the code that lots of people have worked hard on to good use. If anyone has found a blog entry or has this information it would be great to see! I am totally stuck... with no errors. I would love to know how to use this now that it's all compiled successfully!

Later on, the project entered the architecting, development ... phases. due to the fact that the system included many competitive and exciting features I requested patenting it and its going in the process... so imagine you are the kind of person who used to love facing all kind of challenges and returning with excellent experience and results for the stakeholders and yourself, How fairly agile and scrum processes will credit and admit your talent and passion while the scrum master/coach treat the team as one unit that accomplish user stories and converge through trial and error approach??!!!! with that dark thoughts about agile and scrum I found many people "anti agile" and on top of them is "Crispin Rogers Johnson": http://agile-crispin.blogspot.com/ that guy made anti statement for everything Mike Cohn used to talk about. • WCF Message Debugging on WebHttpBehavior

  I've created a custom binding in WCF for a custom MessageEncoder to allow messages to be written as XML using a wider range of encodings than WCF supports out of the box. The encoder appears to be working and I am able to send and receive messages, but I want to verify that the XML message being written is exactly as required by the service I am trying to consume. I've turned on message logging for WCF using the diagnostic trace listeners to output the messages sent and received over the wire to a log file. Unfortunately, for calls using my encoder, the message is displayed as ... stream ... EDIT: I don't think it's anything to do with my custom encoding. I have experimented with my custom binding a little, switching to using the built-in text encoding and http transport. I still don't get a message body logged in the message trace. EDIT2: Having done further investigation, the issue looks to be related not to the custom binding, but the custom behaviour. I'm apply the <webHttp/> behaviour. Once this is specified (along with manual addressing), the tracing behaviour shows up. Is this a known issue with WebHttpBehavior? Am I still barking up the wrong tree?

  I'm trying to use JACOB to interact with a COM object. I was able to invoke an initialization method on the object (and to get its properties), but am not getting any events back. The code is quoted below. I have a sample HTML+Javascript page (running in IE) that successfully receives events from the same object. I'm considering the following options, but would appreciate any concrete troubleshooting ideas ... Send my Java program to the team who developed the COM object, and have them look for anything suspicious on their side (does the object have a way on knowing whether there's a client listening to its events, and whether they were successfully delivered?) Get into the native parts of JACOB and try to debug on that side. • Modify Django Forms

  Hi All, I've recently been developing on the django platform and have stumbled upon Django Forms (forms.Form/forms.ModelForm) as ways of creating <form> html. Now, this is brilliant for quick stuff but what I'm trying to do is a little bit more complicated. Consider a DateField - my current form has fields for day, month and year and constructs a python date object from that. However, a django form creates a single textbox in which the correct format (say 2010-06-15) must be entered. As another example, for large fields I need to replace <input> with <textarea>. I'd like to take advantage of Django's forms for simple validation but I need something simpler for my users. So my question is: can I intercept the rendering of one of these objects to write out the html as I like? If so, do I have to do all the writing myself or can I only do those objects I wish to re-write? Thanks in advance.

If not please close this. I know that no one framework or language is necessarily the only tool for every job. But, do you see MVC eclipsing webforms or webforms going lower on the priority list for Microsoft? They will have to keep webforms for a long time because so many have invested in it, but they don't have to keep adding new functionality for it. I don't know if this is a good example, but it reminds me of web parts. I never saw much improvement in it from Microsoft. It works and I thought it was great until I started to really try and get a lot out of it. Then from what I could see it just wasn't being pursued by Microsoft that much, though it stayed in Visual Studio. Maybe that's a bad example; just what I remembered. EDIT: Also, if anyone has any statements from Microsoft on this subject it is appreciated. No offense to anyone. I was only hoping for something official.

• Exchange Web Services and Property Sets

  I need to retrieve calendar information by invoking the Exchange Web Service in BPOS. I'm using a CalendarView with a PropertySet to retrieve as little data as possible. However, property sets seems to be limited. I need the EmailAddress of the one who made the calendar appointment so I thought I could use the AppointmentSchema.Organizer in the PropertySet. When fetching a whole Appointment I can get the e-mail through appt.Organizer.EmailAddress. But with the code below the Organizer.EmailAddress is always null. I've enabled the trace and checked it and only the Organizer.Name property is sent, nothing else. Does anyone have a solution on how to get the EmailAddress when using a PropertySet? • Understanding Javascript's difference between calling a function, and returning the function but executing it later.

  I'm trying to understand the difference between foo.bar() and var fn = foo.bar; fn(); I've put together a little example, but I dont totally understand why the failing ones actually fail. var Dog = function() { this.bark = "Arf"; }; Dog.prototype.woof = function() { $('ul').append('<li>'+ this.bark +'</li>'); }; var dog = new Dog(); // works, obviously dog.woof(); // works (dog.woof)(); // FAILS var fnWoof = dog.woof; fnWoof(); // works setTimeout(function() { dog.woof(); }, 0); // FAILS setTimeout(dog.woof, 0); Which produces: Arf Arf undefined Arf undefined On JSFiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/D6Vdg/1/ So it appears that snapping off a function causes it to remove it's context. Ok. But why then does (dog.woof)(); work? It's all just a bit confusing figuring out whats going on here. There are obviously some core semantics I'm just not getting.

• Preg Expression to identify classes/ids in a CSS file that have no contents

  I'm in the process of updating some old CSS files in our systems, and we have a bunch that have lots of empty classes simply taking up space in the file. I'd love to learn how to write Regular expressions, but I just don't get them. I'm hoping the more I expose myself to them (with a little more cohesive explanation), the more I'll end up understanding them. The Problem That said, I'm looking for an expression that will identify text followed by a '{' (some have spaces in between, and some do not) and if there are no letters or numbers between that bracket and '}' (spaces don't count), it will be identified as a matching string. I suppose I can trim the whitespace out of the doc before I run a regular expression through it, but I don't want to change the basic structure of the text. I'm hoping to return it into a large <textarea>. Bonus points for explaining the characters and their meanings, and also an expression identifying lines in the copy without any text or numbers, as well. I will likely use the final expression in PHP script. tl;dr: Regular Expression to match: .a_class_or #an_id { /* if there aren't any alphanumerics in here, this should be a matching line of text */ }

• What is the best "forgot my password" method?

  I'm programming a community website. I want to build a "forgot my password" feature. Looking around at different sites, I've found they employ one of three options: send the user an email with a link to a unique, hidden URL that allows him to change his password (Gmail and Amazon) send the user an email with a new, randomly generated password (Wordpress) send the user his current password (www.teach12.com) Option #3 seems the most convenient to the user but since I save passwords as an MD5 hash, I don't see how option #3 would be available to me since MD5 is irreversible. This also seems to be insecure option since it means that the website must be saving the password in clear text somewhere, and at the least the clear-text password is being sent over insecure e-mail to the user. Or am I missing something here? So if I can't do option #1, option #2 seems to be the simplest to program since I just have to change the user's password and send it to him. Although this is somewhat insecure since you have to have a live password being communicated via insecure e-mail. However, this could also be misused by trouble-makers to pester users by typing in random e-mails and constantly changing passwords of various users. Option #1 seems to be the most secure but requires a little extra programming to deal with a hidden URL that expires etc., but it seems to be what the big sites use. What experience have you had using/programming these various options? Are there any options I've missed?

• Highlighting a Table Correctly Despite rowspan and colspan attributes - WITHOUT jQuery

  Thanks to some !#$#@ in another department who wrote some crap code, I am unable to use the jQuery library - despite my fervent desire to do so. Their software has already been released into the world, and I have to be compatible. ============================================ I am trying to highlight a table. Desired behavior: Clicking on a cell in the body highlights the row. Clicking on a cell in the head highlights the column. If a column and row are both highlighted, the intersection is highlighted a different color (super-highlight). Clicking on a previously super-highlighted cell turns off the highlights. This behavior is simple enough to do with a basic table, but when rowspans and colspans start rearing their ugly heads, things start to get a little wonky... highlighting cell[5], for instance, no longer works reliably. My thought, in order to speed execution time of the highlighting itself (by changing a class name), is to pre-calculate the 'offsets' of all cells - with a 'colStart' and 'colEnd', 'rowStart' and 'rowEnd' when the page loads and store that in an array somehow. The question: How would YOU implement this functionality? I am fairly rusty at my JavaScript, awfully rudimentary in my programming skills and would benefit greatly from some guidance. • Reinterpret a CGImageRef using PyObjC in Python

  Hi, I'm doing something that's a little complicated to sum up in the title, so please bear with me. I'm writing a Python module that provides an interface to my C++ library, which provides some specialized image manipulation functionality. It would be most convenient to be able to access image buffers as CGImageRefs from Python, so they could be manipulated further using Quartz (using PyObjC, which works well). So I have a C++ function that provides a CGImageRef representation from my own image buffers, like this: CGImageRef CreateCGImageRefForImageBuffer(shared_ptr<ImageBuffer> buffer); I'm using Boost::Python to create my Python bridge. What is the easiest way for me to export this function so that I can use the CGImageRef from Python? Problems: The CGImageRef type can't be exported directly because it is a pointer to an undefined struct. So I could make a wrapper function that wraps it in a PyCObject or something to get it to send the pointer to Python. But then how do I "cast" this object to a CGImageRef from Python? Is there a better way to go about this?

• WinForms Application Form "Shakes" When Audio Playing

  I have a C# game program that i'm developing. it uses sound samples and winsock. when i test run the game most of the audio works fine but from time to time if it is multiple samples being played sequentially the application form shakes a little bit and then goes back to its old position. how do i go about debugging this or present it to you folks in a manageable manner? i'm sure no one is going to want the whole app code in fear of virus attacks. please guide me.. EDIT: i have not been able to pin down any code section that produces this result. it just does and i cannot explain it. • Windows 7 64 Bit - ODBC32 - Legacy App Problem

  Good day StackOverFlowlers, I´m a little stuck (really stuck) with an issue with a legacy application on my organization. I have a Windows 7 Enterprise 64 Bit machine, Access 2000 Installed and the Legacy App (Is built with something like VB but older) The App uses System ODBC in order to connect to a SQL 2000 DataBase on a Remote Server. I created the ODCB using C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe app in order to create a System DSN. I did not use the Windows 7 because it is not visible to the Legacy App. I tested the ODBC connection with Access and worked ok, I can access the remote database. Then I run the legacy App as Administrator and the App can see the ODBC, but I´m getting errors on credential validation and I´m getting this error: DIAG [08001] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Multi-Protocol]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. (17) DIAG [01000] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Multi-Protocol]ConnectionOpen (Connect()). (53) DIAG [IM006] [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed (0) I use Trusted Connection on the ODBC in order to validate the user by Domain Controller. I think that the credentials are not being sent by the Legacy App to the ODBC, or something like that. I don´t have the source code of the Legacy App in order to debug the connection. Also, I turned off the Firewall. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance!
