    Hi ... The Environment: I am working for a college. We have a couple of labs (about 100 PCs) for students. At the end of the semester, the PCs will be full of viruses, corrupt system files, all sorts of illegal downloads etc. (everything you can expect from a student environment). At the end of the semester, we would like to wipe out all the systems and do a clean install (WindowsXP + a set of application suites) to get ready for the next batch of students. Question: Is there any free software that will enable an admin to deploy a clean disk image to all the PCs in one go?

  • Programmatic use of ARP

    I have a need for some C or C++ code, compilable under Linux, to be able to take a list of IP addresses of some arbitrary number of remote hosts machines and obtain a ethernet MAC address for each one. These host machines may be on the same subnet or they could be on a different subnet behind a router. Its OK if the MAC address of some or all of the remote hosts is the address of the interface on the router. Ultimately, I want to hand off the IP address and MAC address to an FPGA who will use these pieces of information to format and send UDP/IP packets over ethernet to the hosts. Obviously, the FPGA will also be given its own MAC address and IP address to fill in the source MAC and source IP addresses in the packets. Is there some code I can be pointed to that can create and broadcast ARP packets to these remote machines and receive back the ARP response packets such that the destination MAC addresses can be extracted?

    I used Netbeans6.7 to write a servlet, when it runs, it opens a browser window with this address : http://localhost:8080/My_App/Test_Servlet, I replaced the "localhost" with my IP address, now it looks like this : http://192.???.1.??:8080/My_App/Test_Servlet, but I tried to access it from another computer outside my home, it can't read anything, I wonder if I need to change Windows Fire Wall setting to allow outside traffic, it's a Paypal IPN app, so I call Paypal, they said they can't access : http://192.???.1.??:8080/My_App/Test_Servlet What on my side should I do to allow traffic from "paypal.com" to access "My_App/Test_Servlet" ?   • How can I access UDP ports using a web application on the client PC?

    One of the thing that current Windows application does is that it writes out information to a hardware device via a UDP message. We are considering porting the application to web-based. I checked Silverlight, and that doesn't allow UDP. We don't want to use ActiveX or Java Applets. What are the other options? Thanks. Update - does anyone know if I can use Flash to do this?

  • How precise is the internal clock of a modern PC?

    I know that 10 years ago, typical clock precision equaled a system-tick, which was in the range of 10-30ms. Over the past years, precision was increased in multiple steps. Nowadays, there are ways to measure time intervals in actual nanoseconds. However, usual frameworks still return time with a precision of only around 15ms. My question is, which steps did increase the precision, how is it possible to measure in nanoseconds, and why are we still often getting less-than-microsecond precision (for instance in .NET). (Disclaimer: It strikes me as odd that this was not asked before, so I guess I missed this question when I searched. Please close and point me to the question in that case, thanks. I believe this belongs on SO and not on any other SOFU site. I understand the difference between precision and accuracy.)

  • Python - which multi platform GUI framework to use?

    Hi, I've written a Python GUI application and made it run on Linux, Windows and Mac. The framework I'm using is PyGtk. The final result is not really good: the application looks horrible on Mac, and it is not really 'native' neither on Windows. Furthermore on Mac the windows' behavior is sometimes wrong, with modal dialogs appearing below the main windows. I've explored other frameworks and I've found that a porting may be really hard: PyQt it is huge, difficult to install and to distribute under Mac; PyGui is poor: I need tables and tree views at least; wxPython state explicitly that you have to use a custom python build for Mac Tkinter: didn't check it, only have the impression that it is obsolete I know this question may appear similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/394039/which-python-gui-framework but in that thread the portability issue is not really taken in account. Windows and Mac are a must, since most of my user have that systems. Can you also suggest some books?

  • What is a good CPU/PC setup to speed up intensive C++/templates compilation?

    I currently have a machine with an Opteron 275 (2.2Ghz), which is a dual core CPU, and 4GB of RAM, along with a very fast hard drive. I find that when compiling even somewhat simple projects that use C++ templates (think boost, etc.), my compile times can take quite a while (minutes for small things, much longer for bigger projects). Unfortunately only one of the cores is pegged at 100%, so I know it's not the I/O, and it would seem that there is no way to take advantage of the other core for C++ compilation?

    My android app requires that the device has an SDcard and that SDcard is mountable on a PC or MAC as a FileSystem (removable disk) . It is because there is a program for windows which my mobile app writes to sd card which user has to run from his PC and that program works on files on that Mounted SD card and disks on PC from windows. This was a problem on most the Tablets because not all of them can mount their SDcard as removable disk on PC without requiring special drivers on PC for that tablet. But for majority of ICS phones the PC seems to mount the disk as removable storage so I would like to limit my app for the API 8 - API15 (Phones only) Is there a way to specify in the manifest of an android app that the app should work with an ICS android phone and not the ICS tablets so that users having tablets can not download it from android market ?   • Mac Safari randomly recreating cookie when I refresh my login screen. Very bizarre

    We have found an issue in our app where Safari on the Mac randomly recreates a login cookie from a logged off session. I have a fiddler archive with this behaviour here. Note that some stuff has been removed from this to make it easier to get, but nothing which sets a cookie or anything has been taken out - only repetitions of requests 3-8. I'll talk you through the running order Request 1: user logs out via call to /logout.aspx - Set-Cookie returned setting cookie expiry date to 1999 Requests 2-8: user refreshes login page sending calls to root or /res/en-US/s.js - no cookie is sent to server or received back, and access is denied. I have cut out a lot of requests of this nature from the log as they are boring Request 9: request for /res/en-US/s.js - Hv3 authentication cookie has mysteriously reappeared! Wat. There was NO set-cookie! WTFF! Request 10+ : now the cookie has reappeared, the site logs the user in AGAIN The cookie, when examined in Safari looks like <dict> <key>Created</key> <real>259603523.26834899</real> <key>Domain</key> <string>.mysite.dev</string> <key>Expires</key> <date>2010-03-24T16:05:22Z</date> <key>HttpOnly</key> <string>TRUE</string> <key>Name</key> <string>.Hv3</string> <key>Path</key> <string>/</string> </dict> One thing to note is that in Safari, the cookie domain is .mysite.dev not mysite.dev (which is the cookie domain specified in web.config) - however, given that access is denied in requests 2-8, it looks like the cookie has expired OK. If you look in the list of cookies in the browser during 2-8, the .Hv3 cookie is not there. Is this our bug or Safari's? What can I do to stop it happening?

    What I have is a network topology which looks like this: ------ PC --- IP Camera The PC has two ethernet interfaces, and is hosting a small webserver providing some auxiliary data. The issue is that the server on the PC runs on port 80, and the IP Camera is also running on port 80. Currently, we are bridging them, so that the PC's server is accessible at 192.168.0.2 and the camera at 192.168.0.3. However, what I'm trying to explore is the feasibility of using the PC to expose them both on the PC's IP, ideally both on port 80. Can this be done with regular sockets, or will it be necessary to use raw sockets?

  • Does Visual Studio 2010 on x64 crash often? Or is it just on my PC?

    MY VS2010 crashes dozens of times a day. Compare that to 2008 and 2005 which were rock solid. Is 2010 known to be susceptible to crashing? Or could it be my environment? I'm using x64 as a dev box for the first time. The only plugin I has so far is Ankh. It crashes when doing different things. One I've noticed so far that always happens is if I press the key sequence alt-f-s-up (or any cursor key) it will crash every time.

How do I move the locally created repository to the web server? It looks like an ftp of the .hg folder on the local drive to the remote web server does the trick. Am I doing it the right way.   • How do you protect yourself from runaway memory consumption bringing down the PC?

    Every now and again I find myself doing something moderately dumb that results in my program allocating all the memory it can get and then some. This kind of thing used to cause the program to die fairly quickly with an "out of memory" error, but these days Windows will go out of its way to give this non-existent memory to the application, and in fact is apparently prepared to commit suicide doing so. Not literally of course, but it will starve itself of usable physical RAM so badly that even running the task manager will require half an hour of swapping (after all the runaway application is still allocating more and more memory all the time). This doesn't happen too often, but when it does it's disastrous. I usually have to reset my machine, causing data loss from time to time and generally a lot of inconvenience. Do you have any practical advice on making the consequences of such a mistake less dire? Perhaps some registry tweak to limit the max amount of virtual memory an app is allowed to allocate? Or some CLR flag that will limit this only for the current application? (It's usually in .NET that I do this to myself.) ("Don't run out of RAM" and "Buy more RAM" are no use - the former I have no control over, and the latter I've already done.)

  • How can I install Perl's DBI on Mac OS X so Apache can find it?

    I'm trying to setup a Perl development environment on my Mac laptop and have been having a really hard time getting it working. I thought I had everything configured correctly but when I try to run a sample script it is reporting errors with the DBI module and can't access the DB. I honestly don't know what option makes more sense and could use guidance on that as well. As you can probably tell I'm pretty lost at the moment. Please help!!! Thanks in advance.
