• Incremental backups in Quickbooks 2005

  My church uses Quickbooks 2005. They have a backup to a 512 MB thumbdrive. They have been backing up about every week for the past 18 months. The filesize of the backups have grown from 14 MB to about 23 MB. I was planning on giving them a 1 or 2 GB thumb drive and calling it a day, but when I dumped this info into Excel and projected out the growth rate, I found that we'll hit 1 GB in July, and 10 GB in about another 18 months, and then 100 GB about 18 months after that. It looks to me like Quickbooks saves all the transactions with every backup. Is there a way to force incremental backups? If this is the way it is, that's fine, but I'd rather not keep buying another order of magnitude of storage space every 18 months. Can I safely delete the previous backups, and just keep the recent 2 or 3 months worth? Thanks.

• Powershell ActiveDirectory-Module on SBS-2008?

  I read plenty of tutorials that describe how to install ADWS (ActiveDirectory Webservices) and Powershell. But I never saw any hint about installing ADWS on a SBS-2008 in order to work with Powershell and ActiveDirectory-module. I know, that I should use the SBS-Console to manage users, but there are tasks where it could be good to use AD as database of users and computers to loop through them (e.g. remote-commands on all workstations, find out user-lastlogon-times etc). Can anybody say, if it's ok (and supported?) to install AD-Powershell-Module and ADWS on a SBS-2008? Thanks

• deleting old unused images

  As we move on with our content-based websites, lots of images get dumped in our images folder, but we rarely come across self-committed monkyes that delete their files once they do not need it, which means, we end up with a huge list of images in one folder, and it is very tricky to clean it up. My question is (and i dont know if this is the right website to ask it), is there a tool that allows me to find out if an image has been requested by web in the last (n) months? my other general question is, how do you do it? how do you take control of your images folders? what policy do you enforce on developers to clean up? what measures do you take in order to decide what goes and what stays if you end up with an out-of-control situation? my suggestion was to rename the images folder, create a new one, copy the basic ones and wait for someone to complain about a broken image! :) i find this to be the most efficient.

  Hello all, I'm trying to setup Ubuntu on an old PC. I ran the following command, lspci, in order to get info on the wireless card installed. 00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88w8335 [Libertas] 802.11b/g Wireless (rev 03) Does anyone know where I can get drivers for this card/chip? And also, how to install (I'm rather new to linux). Also, I'm sure the card is working because I just formatted over xp, and everything was working well. Thanks in advanced!

• Blackberry Enterprise Server - Not running?

  My BlackBerry enterprise server recently stopped forwarding messages to devices. In fact, the server claims that the last time it communicated with all the devices associated with it, was on Thursday night (4 nights ago.) The catch is this, the Exchange server is running properly (or as properly as Exchange can run :) ) The SQL server seems to be running properly. And the Blackberry Enterprise server seems to be running correctly. Other than the fact that the server has not communicated with any device since Thursday, and the fact that I am not getting messages, there appears to be nothing wrong. How do I get these message to be forwarded to devices again? I have restarted the BES services in the order suggested by the BlackBerry folks to no avail.

• Syntax Highlighting for Gherkin (Cucumber Language)

  SyntaxHighlighter is the de facto standard for syntax highlighting on the web. I am currently working on a tool for publishing BDD specifications on the web and I want syntax highlighting. Unfortunately, SyntaxHighlighter does not support Gherkin, the language Cucumber and SpecFlow use to define BDD specifications. Writing new language parsers for SyntaxHighlighter is very easy, so I implemented one for Gherkin. • How do I force .htaccess authorization to occur over ssl?

  I'm trying to force a particular directory to require only allowed IPs and a valid username/password through basic authorization. To ensure that the username/password are sent in encrypted form, I want the directory to also force SSL use. Here is what I have in my .htaccess file: # Force HTTPS-Connection RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^443$ RewriteRule (.*) https://www.mywebsite.com%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L] ## password begin ## AuthName "Restricted Access" AuthUserFile /var/www/admin/.htpasswd AuthType Basic Require valid-user Order deny,allow Deny from all Allow from 79.1.231.151 62.123.134.83 Satisfy All Unfortunately, when I access that directory using http protocol, it is asking for the password before it redirects the page to the secure version. This means the password is sent unencrypted. What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to do this?

• Clean URLs issue using .htaccess in PHP project

  I am working on a PHP laravel project. I am currently facing issues with .htaccess file. I have following .htaccess: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> Options -MultiViews RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^ index.php [L] </IfModule> When I reload my page the it gave me following error: 404 Not Found The requested URL /contacts was not found on this server. Then I opened /etc/apache2/users/username.conf file which had following line of code: <Directory "/Users/username/Sites/"> Options Indexes MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> In above code I changed AllowOverride None to AllowOverride All. Then I reload page and got following error: 403 Forbidden You don't have permission to access /contacts on this server. When I add FollowSymLinks to .htaccess file Options such as like this Options -MultiViews FollowSymLinks. Then sometimes I get this 500 Internal Server Error error and sometime this *Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data*. Each time I reload my page one of these errors with FollowSymLinks option. I also uncomment following lines in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: LoadModule rewrite_module libexec/apache2/mod_rewrite.so LoadModule php5_module libexec/apache2/libphp5.so and still I am getting same permission denied error. Please help me I am trying to solve this problem for past 3 days but it is till unresolved.

• Estimating cost of labor for a controlled experiment

  Let's say you are a software engineering researcher and you are designing a controlled experiment to compare two software technologies or techniques (e.g., TDD vs. non-TDD, Python vs. Go) with respect to some qualities of interest (e.g., quality of resulting code, programmer productivity). According to your study design, participants will work alone to implement a non-trivial software system. You estimate it should take about six months for a single programmer to complete the task. You also estimate via power analysis that you will need around sixty study participants to obtain statistically significant results, assuming the technologies actually do yield different outcomes. To maximize external validity, you want to use professional programmers as study participants. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to find professional programmers who can volunteer for several months to work full-time on implementing a software system. You decide to go the simplest route and contract with a large IT consulting firm to obtain access to programmers to participate in the study. What is a reasonable estimate of the cost range, per person-month, for the programming labor? Assume you are constrained to work with a U.S.-based firm, but it doesn't matter where in the U.S. the firm itself or the programmers or located. Note: I'm looking for a reasonable order-of-magnitude range suitable for back-of-the-envelope calculations so that when people say "Why doesn't somebody just do a study to measure X", I can say, "Because running that study properly would cost $Y", and have a reasonable argument for the value of $Y.

This is one of the script which every developer would like to keep it handy. I have upgraded the script bit more. I have included few additional information which I believe I should have added from the beginning. It is difficult to visualize the final script when we are writing it first time. I use every script which I write on this blog, the matter of the fact, I write only those scripts here which I was using at that time. It is quite possible that as time passes by my needs are changing and I change my script. Here is the updated script of this subject. If there are any user data types, it will list the same as well. • LinkedIn Woopsie with the Outlook 2010 Social Media Connector

  I have always used the LinkedIn toolbar for Outlook to sort out, upload and sync my contacts. Because of this I have over 2000 contacts in my contacts list that I sync with my phone, Plaxo, live, Google and others. I got a surprise the other day when my LinkedIn account was suspended and I was unable to login.   Figure: Bad, account suspended   So I contacted LinkedIn customer services to find out what the problem is, and here is the response: Dear Martin, We have recently noticed a large number of page searches and profile views through your LinkedIn account. We are aware that you may be using an automated or manual process to systematically view LinkedIn web pages. The information within LinkedIn is provided by our users for usage on the site only. In order to protect user privacy, our User Agreement prohibits using: 1. Automated or manual means to view an excessively high number of profiles or mini-profiles. 2. Automated means to run searches to collect or store data obtained from our site. We have placed a restriction on your account until you agree to stop using these or similar methods to view pages on LinkedIn. We look forward to your reply to discuss this further. Sincerely, LinkedIn Privacy Team It looks like LinkedIn has suspended my account because of something that their component is doing! I do not know if this is an isolated case, or if it will happen more as more users get on Outlook 2010 and update to the new software, but watch out.   If you've been using SQL Server for a long time, you may have been used to using the OBJECT_NAME system function in the past - especially useful when converting table IDs into table names when querying sysobjects and sysindexes..... However, if you're an old-school DBA  - did you know since SQL 2005 service pack 2 it  accepts a  second parameter ? database_id.. For example, this can be used to summarize some useful information from sys.dm_exec_query_stats. • 1080p playback on external monitor

  My system (netbook) specs: 1.6 GHz dual core atom N2600 2 GB DDR3 RAM Integrated GMA3600 GPU Win 7 Professional 32 Bit Daum Pot Player V-1.5 The issue: I downloaded a 1.33 GB sized 1920 x 1080 HD documentary (file extension: mp4) and it plays without a hitch using pot player. However, when I connected an external display (an LED Full HD 24" monitor) using D-Sub, the video plays fine but the player controls become very unresponsive. For instance, it takes about 40 seconds to exit full screen while playing. I tried: Installed/updated all the latest monitor drivers Updated the VGA drivers for GMA3600 No other programs ran while the video played, with most unwanted services and background processes disabled/killed. CPU usage goes only up to 49% when the video plays Question: What may I do in order to improve the player response/video playback experience? Do I need to play with (or change) Pot Player's default video decoders, etc?

• Searching Your PL/SQL Source with Oracle SQL Developer

  Version 3.2.1 included a few tweaks along with several hundred bug fixes. One of those tweaks was the addition of ‘ALL_SOURCE’ as a selection for the Type drop down in the Find Database Object panel. Scroll ALL the way down to the bottom Searching the database for your code or objects can be expensive. The ALL_SOURCE view comes in pretty handy when I want to demo how to cancel long running queries or the Task Progress panel – did you know you can manage all of your long running queries here? Yeah, don’t run this I pretty much hosed our demo pod at Open World b/c I ran that same query but added an ORDER BY b.TEXT DESC to the query and blew up the TEMP space and filled the primary partition on the image. Fun stuff. Anyways, where was I going with this? Oh yeah, searching ALL_SOURCE can be expensive. So we took it out of the product for awhile. And now it’s back in. If you select the ‘ALL’ field, it doesn’t actually search EVERYTHING, because that would probably be less than helpful. So if you want to search your PL/SQL objects for a scrap or bit of code, use the ‘ALL_SOURCE’ option in v3.2.1 Double-Click on the search results to go to the code you’re looking for. Be careful what you search for. Just like any query, it could take awhile.

• HDD is not readable - can I fix this

  I have two HDD in my system, but today morning the additional hard disk is not readable. My all data are kept inside the additional HDD. When I disconnect the additional HDD from my system then system boot as usual, but when I connect HDD my system hangs Up in windows boot logo. Please note this problem is not related to HDD order. When I connect only the additional HDD then system shows this error: disk not readable press ctrl+alt+del to restart I can see the name of additional HDD in BIOS. When I connect both HDD i get a continues beep... beeep .. beep sound. Please tell me is my HDD gone dead ? How do I get the data back ? is there any kit for recovering HDD data ?

• Carbonite has taken over my iMac

  I used Carbonite to back up 75GB on my iMac. I also created a folder on my iMac to copy files to, from an external hard drive and then use Carbonite to back up from there. And THEN thinking I had everything safely backed up and, in order to make room on my hard drive I DELETED some of those files, and instead of increasing disk space..my disk space has shrunk to 2GB... I know, I know..you can't use Carbonite like that, but now I have two questions. 1) What is the explanation for the decrease in disk space even though I have deleted about 20GB of those backed up files from my hard drive? It must have something to do with the way Carbonite references backed up files, And 2) Is there a way to extricate myself from this situation?

• Updating drivers on a Lenovo T410

  I have a few question regarding updating the drivers on my Lenovo T410. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed with a 32 bit(X86) sub directory. I'm not that familiar with updating drivers on 64bit Windows so I'm wondering if I should install both 32/64 bit driver versions instead of just 64 bit. Another question I have is Lenovo specific. On the support page for my device, there is a list of Windows updates available dating back to 2009, however I do have ThinkVantage update manager installed and it checks for Windows updates weekly. Should I install all of the Windows specific updates, or can I rely on update manager? My last question is if I should install the drivers for the T410 in any specific order? Any help is much appreciated as I haven't been able to find answers to these specific questions here, or by googling. Thanks in advance

• cannot get apache2 redirect working for a site

  what i want to do is to redirect all visitors going to example.com to www.example.com.it seems a very common task but for some reason it is not working for this specific site .it always points to the default one. • HP dv9000 Vista laptop won't boot from CD/DVD drive

  My HP dv9000 Vista laptop recently got the BSOD with error 0x0000c1f5. The only way to fix this error is to be able to boot from CD/DVD and use some repair software I have. The problem is that the laptop REFUSES to boot from any CD/DVD I try. I've changed the boot order so the CD/DVD is first, and I can hear the drive spin up a bit upon power-up, but after a second, it spins down and then the laptop tries to boot from hard drive. Any ideas? (I've tried lots of CDs so it's not the media itself) Thanks much!
