• 8GB, but have to run Windows Xp (32 Bit). Anything I can do with the additional memory?

  I ordered a new computer with 8GB RAM with the plan to run Windows 7, 64Bit. Turns out now, that I need to run a 32Bit OS (XP or 7) due to some software which does not run on 64Bit yet (not even with any of the available compatibility settings / modes). Is there anything I can do with the memory above 4GB in this scenario? I'm willing to consider creative solutions like running a hypervisor under XP that offers the memory as a RAM-Disk for swapping etc. ? The software that does not run on 64Bit is CISCO VPN (there seems to be a half-working solution for that) and CISCO IP phone / webcam integration "CISCO Unified Video Advantage" (there is apparently no solution for that).

• Triple head DVI KVM

  I am trying to run a Linux desktop and Windows desktop simultaneously with a KVM for maximum productivity. Also running three monitors. I need a KVM that can do 3x DVI @ 1920x1080 + 2x usb (mouse and keyboard) + toslink for two machines. What would you suggest? I ask on here because I have searched quite a bit and have yet to find a KVM with these requirements. (I would be open to something like modifying 3x regular KVMs to control them with one button or similar) Thanks! (I tried posting this question earlier, but it was closed as being "not related to computer hardware or software" ... is a KVM not related to computer hardware or software? I'm pretty sure it is. kvm-switch has been tagged 100 times on here for example.)

• Installing NVIDIA driver causes black screen (750M)

  I have a dual boot set up on a Lenovo Ideapad Y500 with NVIDIA 750M and I am having problems installing the graphics cards. I have made sure to install both linux-headers-generic and linux-source, and yet have ended up with a black screen whether I install nvidia-current, nvidia-current-updates, nvidia-experimental-310, and nvidia-319. I even tried enabling proprietary drivers through settings and still ended up with a black screen on boot. Is my graphics card just not supported yet, or is there a way to fix this?

• How you choose your first job as a programmer? [on hold]

  For Brief I am a recently graduated CS student. I am looking for a job these days, but I have no idea what kind of software development jobs I like(embedded system,web development or else...). And I am looking for your advice. Here is a little more While I was a student, I had an one year internship experience as a system engineer in a semi-conductor company where I wrote Linux driver, tuned system performance, etc.. I was happy about this experience as it allowed me to deepen my understanding of the operating system and different low level things. And I thought "Em, I will continue in the embedded area after I graduate". At the end of my study, I am doing an another internship in web development, both front-end and back-end. And I also enjoys a lot the process of learning new things and making it work (Backbone, Node, socketio, etc..). Now, when I am looking for a software development position, I do not know what to apply! All I know is that I want a job which allows me to keep up with the trends instead of repeating. But besides this, I've no idea what specific type of job I want to do. Turn back to embedded system? Continue with web development? Change to other promising areas(data mining)? All these development positions makes no big difference to me. But I think this is not good and I need some criteria at choosing. So I am looking for advice and I would really appreciate if you can share your experience.

• To program in free time as a programmer, is to show that programming is passion. If not, is the programmer good? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: I don't program in my spare time. Does that make me a bad developer? A lot of blogs and advice on the web seem to suggest that in order to become a great developer, doing just your day job is not enough. For example, you should contribute to open source projects in your spare time, write smartphone apps, etc. In fact a lot of this advice seems to suggest that if you don't love programming enough to do it all day long then you're probably in the wrong career. That doesn't ring true with me. I enjoy my work, but when I come home from the office I'm not in the mood to jump straight back onto the computer and start coding away until bedtime. I only have a certain number of hours free time each day, and I'd rather spend them on other hobbies, seeing friends or going outside than in front of the computer. I do get a kick out of programming, and do hack around outside of work occasionally. I'm committed to my personal development and spend time reading tech blogs and books as a way to keep learning and becoming better. But that doesn't extend so far as to my wanting to use all my spare time for coding. Does this mean I'm not a 'true' software developer at heart? Is it possible to become a good software developer without doing extra outside your job? I'd be very interested to hear what you think.

• Page views in Google Analitics are off compared to a similar metric

  We have a page where a user can sign a pledge to recycle by clicking a pledge button. A script writes it to a text file which updates the number on the page. In the past 2 days there have been 185 pledges signed but only 63 page views in GA. I trust that they are unique pledges and not just people adding multiple fake names and entering it. Is there anyway to get a better report from Google Analytics?

I had installed the post-relase updates for Nvidia, but encountered some problems, so removed [deactivated] them through "Aditional drivers". • Thunderbird very slow with Gmail

  I'm using the latest version of Thunderbird with 3 Gmail accounts. Every time I launch it it seems it's downloading all my messages again. I've compacted folders (is the action working for the 3 accounts or do I need to do it for each of them?) and deleted the .msc files but nothing change. It leads to a software using a lot of bandwidth and being very slow when using it. It's a pain to write a message or even to view one. All the software is so slow I've never seen that it's almost unusable. I'm using thses addons : Dictionary Google Calendar Lightning My Gmail accounts are configured to imap.

• Easiest (free) way to get VM hosting Windows OS, on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

  I'm a software developer and my workstation is running Win7 Ultimate, 64bit. I want to run a virtual PC on which I can deploy and run the web-software I create, as a virtual web-server PC. I want the VM to also be Windows as that's what I know, the version isn't too important but on that PC I want to run things like MySQL, TomCat, etc. I see VMWare make 'Player', also I see VirtualBox and I know MS also have solutions too, which I've heard good things about. Does it make much difference which I use as far as creating & using VMs? Or are they all pretty similar?

• What kind of projects are suited as a portfolio? [on hold]

  I was thinking about finishing up some hobby projects I used myself or am planing to use myself but I'm not sure if a future employer might be put off by them. For example, if I decided to create a custom website for an online (gaming, maybe) community instead of using an existing CMS, is it a good idea to provide a link to said community website or should I just put up the CMS and pretend like nobody actually uses it? Also, what about very specific things? I like linguistics and constructing languages. Obviously nobody wants to come up with 1000s of words so people usually use word generators or software to emulate sound shift or software to organise everything and produce dictionaries and such. Would such a project be too specific and too abstract for a portfolio or is the "he did programming work simply for enjoyment and his hobby and not just for money or grades" thing more important? It's quite an abstract hobby and most people don't even know that it's a thing and think the languages you hear in Game of Thrones, Avatar or Star Trek are just gibberish. Explaining such things to people is a pain to begin with especially if said people speak no other language. Would such things throw an employer off or is the content itself completely irrelevant? Thanks. Also, if this is not fitting for the programmers stackexchange, then please, don't close the thread right away but tell me where else to go because I got here though a closed question from stackoverflow. • MSI Install over network with Admin Rights

  I have been asked to install software.msi over a network to a group of users as they logon. My issue is that they also need admin rights to install this software. I have tried using runas command but it askes the user to input a password. I have also tried using MSIEXEC but still stating user has not enough privalages. Giving users admin rights accross the network or locally is also no an option. Help please! Andy.

• Looking for a product configurator

  I am looking for a product configurator for products with high complexity. The main goal is to allow a sales person to configure the product in a correct and working manner. The product is a combination of hard- and software options. The options for sure have dependecies (so option A needs B and C) and can also exclude each other. The performance requirements of the software related to the hardware need to be considered. So some rules need to be defineable. Does anybody know a tool (preferred open source) doing that job?   So I upgraded on a fresh install to ubuntu 12.10, not beta, and I've tried installing wine many mannnnyy times now many different ways but the jist of it is this "This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable.
