• Asp.Net MVC2 TekPub Starter Site methodology question

  Ok I've just ran into this and I was only supposed to be checking my emails however I've ended up watching this (and not far off subscribing to TekPub). http://tekpub.com/production/starter Now these app is a great starting point, but it raises one issue for me and the development process I've been shown to follow (rightly or wrongly). There is no conversion from the LinqToSql object when passing data to the view. Are there any negitives to this? The main one I can see is with validation, does this cause issues when using MVC's built in validation as this is somthing we use extensivly. Because we are using the built in objects generated by LinqToSql how would one go about adding validation, like [Required(ErrorMessage="Name is Required")] public string Name {get;set;} Interested to understand the benifits of this methodology and any negitives that, should we take it on, experiance through the development process.

• ModalPopupExtender OnShow Event

  When clicking a button, I have a ModalPopupExtender (Panel) that gets displayed. I can't seem to trigger any event during that process. Adding an event to the button that opens the ModalPopupExtender doesnt work, as it never triggers. Adding the button as a trigger in my UpdatePanel also doesnt work. Scenario: I have a gridview with a button outside of the gridview. Clicking the button opens up a ModalPopupExtender which needs to display the checkboxes clicked on the gridview. I have the code to get the checkboxes clicked on the Gridview, however I cant seem to use an event during the process of opening the ModalPopupExtender.

• Do you know when to send a done email in Scrum?

  At SSW we have always sent done emails to the owner/requestor to let them know that it is done. Others who are dependent on that tasks are CC’ed so they know they can proceed. But how does that fit into Scrum?   Update 14th April 2010 Rule added to Rules to better Scrum with TFS If you are working on a task: When you complete a Task that is part of a User Story you need to send a done email to the Owner of that Story. You only need to add the Task #, Summary and link to the item in WIWA. Remember that all your tasks should be under 4 hours, do spending lots of time on a Done Email for a Task would be counter productive. Add more information if required, for example you may have completed the task a different way than previously discussed.  Make sure that every User Story has an Owner as per the rules. If you are the owner of a story: When you complete a story you should send a comprehensive done email as per the rules when the story had been completed. Make sure you add a list of all of the Tasks that were completed as part of the story and the Done criteria that you completed. If your done criteria says: Built Successfully 30% Code Coverage All tests passed Then add an illustration to show this. Figure: Show that you have met your Done criteria where possible.   This is all designed to help you Scrum Team members (Product Owner, ScrumMaster and Team) validate the quality of the work that has been completed. • Background job with status in rails

  Hey. I would like to upload a file and then parse it. Because parsing can take up to 10min I installed delayed_job plugin and called parsing function through send_later function. I have to mention that this is an AJAX app. Imagine that you press an AJAX button that starts upload and after that the source is imported into the database. During the process I want to show the progress bar or message (importing...) and when it completes the task status changes to done. My question is: What is the best way to check for status of the process. What would you do? My idea is to have another controller actions "status" which look into the database and provide the right status.

• msvcrt: memory usage goes wild, but not under debugger

  I have a C++ code compiled with Intel compiler, 32bit, in MS VC6 mode, so using either msvcrt.dll or msvcrtd.dll. The process makes heavy memory allocation and deallocation. I monitor the memory usage with WMI and look at VirtualSize and WorkingSetSize. with debug runtime (msvcrtd.dll): virtual constant 1.7GB, working constant 1.2GB with non-debug runtime (msvcrt.dll): virtual raising 1.7-- 2.1GB, working raising 1.2-1.4GB with non-debug runtime but under debugger (windbg): virtual constant 1.7GB, working constant At 2.1 GB virtual the process is crashing (as expected). But why would the virtual usage increase only with (non-debug) msvcrt.dll and only if not under debugger? In all cases compilation flags are identical, only runtime libs are different.

• Avoiding exceptions when uploading files in laravel

  I've got a file upload field (attachment1) in a form that may or may not have a file uploaded in it when I process the form in laravel. When I'm trying to process the page, this line generates an exception: Input::upload('attachment1',path('storage').'attachments/'.$name); Here is the text of the exception: Message: Call to a member function move() on a non-object it seems that I need to check in advance to see if 'attachment1' has a file, and I found that the function Input::has_file('attachment1') is supposed to tell me whether or not 'attachment1' has a file, but even when I submit an empty form, it returns true. Also, from reading documentation, it seems that Input::upload is supposed to just return false when trying to upload a non-existant file, so why does it produce this exception instead, and how can I fix it?

  If you make a little research on the internet you'll see many DLLImport styles for this user32.dll function: HDC GetDC(HWND hWnd); The question is: what type is more appropriate for .NET x64 apps (either compiled with the Platform target as AnyCPU on a x64 machine or specifically as x64)? IntPtr for example grows to a size of 8 on a x64 process, can this be a problem? Is uint more appropriate than Uint64? What is the size of the pointers this function uses when used in a x64 process? The DLL is called user32.dll does it work as 32bit or 64bit on a x64 operating system? • Make MySQL database replication always use the most free node?

  We started using Multi-Master Replication Manager for MySQL, and I am wondering whether it is possible to to treat this setup like multi-symmetric processing: a process pops off the process queue, and the node (in this case a server) that is most free is selected for the job. It seems that what happens is, the service switches to a slave ONLY when it mysqld crashes or goes away. Is there a way to make database replication for MySQL act in more of a distributed manner? Maybe there is other software besides MMM that can do this? Is there a way to switch the reader role to another server whene mysqld slows down (rather than just when it fails)?

• OS memory allocation addresses

  Quick curious question, memory allocation addresses are choosed by the language compiler or is it the OS which chooses the addresses for the memory asked? This is from a doubt about virtual memory, where it could be quickly explained as "let the process think he owns all the memory", but what happens on 64 bits architectures where only 48 bits are used for memory addresses if the process wants a higher address? Lets say you do a int a = malloc(sizeof(int)); and you have no memory left from the previous system call so you need to ask the OS for more memory, is the compiler the one who determines the memory address to allocate this variable, or does it just ask the OS for memory and it allocates it on the address returned by it?

• Lose changed data in session

  Our asp.net 2.0 application has a very long process (synchronized) before sending response back to client. I observed that a second request, exactly same the initial one, was sent after client IE8 waited response for a long period of time while our application was still processing the first request. I use page session with predefined key to store a flag when the initial request arrives and then starts long process while client IE waits for the response, so if second request comes in, our application checks the session value. After our application sets the session flag and starts processing, I use Fiddler “Abort Session” to abort the initial request, right away the second request (same as the first one) is sent automatically, but session value set earlier seems no longer exist. Any thoughts?

  I've downloaded a patch from some site and trying to apply it (twisted, python web framework). Several hunks failed. How do I automate manual patching process using vim? Details: I'm trying to automate the process of applying failed hunks. Many tiny changes, each about adding/removing 1-2 chars. Difficult to see. I Have to create two new temporary files and :diffthis them manually to see the difference. Yes, outside VCS. I can imagine a neat way to deal with it using git, but I would prefer to avoid creating git repo for that.

• Does anyone know a better alternative to MS Excel's Solver?

  My company has to crunch a lot of data and part of the process involves running the solver and plotting a graph through resulting data points. Obviously there is a lot of copy and paste involved and the whole process is shaky, error prone and all round cluster-fudge. I was wondering if there was an alternative to the solver that can be used so that even if we have to use excel to plot the final graph, there will be a lot less data that needs to be copied and pasted back and forth. It would be great especially if the tool could be easily integrated into a .NET application but I am open to suggestions that may require a little bit of code-fu to get this to work. Thanks!

• Debug C# Windows Service

  Scenario I've got a windows service written in C#. I've read all the google threads on how to debug it, but I still can't get it to work. I've run "PathTo.NetFramework\InstallUtil.exe C:\MyService.exe"........It said the install was successful, however when I run "Services.msc", The service isn't displayed at all, anywhere. If I go into Task Manager, there is a process called "MyService.vshost.exe".....pretty sure that's not it, because it's a service, not a process........Any suggestions and/or help? Greatly appreciated. Other I'm running VS2008.

• glibc backtrace - can't redirect output to file

  Hi, I'm in the process of debugging a C program (that I didn't write). I have all of the internal debugging tools (a whole bunch of printf's) enabled, and I wrote a small PHP script that uses proc_open() and just grabs both stdout and stderr, and time-coordinates them in one file. At the moment, the binary is dieing with a realloc() error that's caught by glibc, and a glibc backtrace is printed, beginning with: *** glibc detected *** /sbin/rsyslogd: realloc(): invalid next size: 0x00002ace626ac910 *** Here's the thing I don't understand: I've confirmed that the PHP script is catching both stdout and stderr from the binary's process and writing them to the correct files, but this backtrace is still printed to the console. Where is this coming from? Is there some magical output channel other than stdout and stderr? Any ideas on how I go about capturing this backtrace to a file, or sending it out with stderr? • Can't use ProcessWindowStyle.Minimized to start Firefox instance minimized?

  I'm having trouble using Process.Start with Firefox. I want to start a new instance of Firefox in a minimized window. The following works fine with Internet Explorer, notepad, etc.: ProcessStartInfo p = new ProcessStartInfo(); p.FileName = "iexplore.exe"; p.Arguments = "http://www.google.com"; p.WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Minimized; Process.Start(p); This opens IE in a new, minimized window. Good, just what I want. If I try the exact same thing but instead supply Firefox in the p.FileName, it opens Firefox in a "normal" window, rather than minimized. I've tried various changes to arguments, also have tried examining my local Firefox settings (under Tools/Options) with no luck. I'm sure I'm just missing something simple, but can't figure out what it is. If anyone can help me with getting Firefox opened in a minimized state it would be greatly appreciated!

• Automate paster create -t plone3_buildout

  I want to automate the process of plone3_buildout. Explanation: The default(the one I use) way of building a plone site is using paster, like so: paster create -t plone3_buildout This asks me a few questions and then create a default buildout for the site. What I want: I want to automate this process using buildout. My buildout will execute this paster command, feed in my preconfigured values to the paster. I haven't found a recipe which can do this. If someone has an idea of how to do this, please share the info. If there is a recipe which can feed values to interactive commands(with known output, like with plone3_buildout command), that would be useful too.

• Auto deployment of PHP applications

  My team currently has a development web/database server and a live deployment web server and a live database server. We use SVN with the repository stored on the development server but the problem is our deployment process. Currently when we need to deploy an update to the live application we simply use SFTP to transfer from the repository to the live web server and then amend the database on the live server to reflect the development database. This is a really slow process as we also minify all javascript and CSS files. I have used Capistrano for Ruby and Cruise Control for java but I have never used anything for PHP. I'd rather not have to build our own if something already existed. Does anyone know of anything?
