• Comparison between Cocos2d and Corona

  I'm having a really hard time deciding which way to go on this. I'm about to start developing a game and I haven't been able to find many good comparisons between these approaches. I don't have many requirements for the game yet, but here is what I do know. needs to work on iPhone I don't have much money ($400 for Unity for iPhone is probably too much. I can probably afford $99 for Corona.) Graphics will be 2D Physics support is not needed Ability to use particles would be nice Game Center support would be nice (Corona is planning to support it soon) It would be nice to be able to support Android as well if it isn't much effort. I have done my own research, so I know basic things about them. I know Corona uses Lua and Cocos2D uses Objective C. I know that Corona allows deployment to iPhone and Android, but how easy is it? Cocos2D is free, but so many people talk about how easy it is to use Corona, but I don't like being restricted to features Corona supports or the price tag. I feel so torn here.

• SSRS Subscription Fails

  Our SSRS server is not executing a subscription correctly. (Only subscription we have btw) We created a subscription to export a report as an excel file to the file system. Tried running the job that gets generated, and this error happens 'EXECUTE AS LOGIN' failed for the requested login 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. The step failed. It's not the most helpful in tracking down what exactly it was trying to do. EDIT Digging further into the logs I also get these errors w3wp!extensionfactory!f!7/30/2010-14:29:26:: w WARN: The extension Report Server FileShare does not have a LocalizedNameAttribute. w3wp!extensionfactory!11!7/30/2010-14:34:48:: w WARN: The extension Report Server Email does not have a LocalizedNameAttribute.

• Oracle 64-bit assembly throws BadImageFormatException when running unit tests

  We recently upgraded to the 64-bit Oracle client. Since then, Visual Studio 2010 unit tests that hit the database (I know, unit tests shouldn't hit the database--they're not perfect) all fail with this error message:Test method MyProject.Test.SomeTest threw exception: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'Oracle.DataAccess, Version=4.112.3.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.I resolved this by changing the test settings to run tests in 64-bit. From the Test menu, go to Edit Test Settings, and pick your settings file. Go to Hosts, and change the "Run tests in 32 bit or 64 bit process" dropdown to "Run tests in 64 bit process on 64 bit machine". Now your tests should run.This fix makes me a little nervous. Visual Studio 2010 and earlier seem to change that file for no apparent reason, add more settings files, etc. If you're not paying attention, you could have TestSettings1.testsettings through TestSettings99.testsettings sitting there and never notice the difference. So it's worth making a note of how to change it in case you have to redo it, and being vigilant about files VS tries to add.I'm not entirely clear on why this was even a problem. Isn't that the point of an MSIL assembly, that it's not specific to the hardware it runs on? An IL disassembler can open the Oracle.DataAccess.dll in question, and in its Runtime property, I see the value "v4.0.30319 / x64". So I guess the assembly was specifically build to target 64-bit platforms only, possibly due to a 64-bit-specific difference in the external Oracle client upon which it depends. Most other assemblies, especially in the .NET Framework, list "msil", and a couple list "x86". So I guess this is another entry in the long list of ways Oracle refuses to play nice with Windows and .NET.If this doesn't solve your problem, you can read others' research into this error, and where to change the same test setting in Visual Studio 2012.

• The Open Data Protocol

  Well, day 2 of the MIX10 conference did not disappoint.  The keynote speakers introduced the preview release of IE9, which looks really cool and quick, and Visual Studio 2010 RC that is scheduled to RTM on April 12th.  It seemed to have a lot of improvements aimed at making developers more productive.  Here are the current links to these two offerings: Internet Explorer 9 – Platform Preview Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 – Release Candidate While both of these were interesting, the demos that really blew me away today centered around the work being done with The Open Data Protocol, or OData for short!  OData is a recommended standard being pushed by Microsoft that uses a REST based interface to interact with various types of data in a uniform manner.  Data producers then provide the data to consumer in either ATOM or JSON formats as requested by the client application. • A list of pros and cons to giving developers “Local Admin” privileges to their machines? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is local “User” rights enough or do developers need Local Administrator or Power User while coding? I currently work for a large utilities company which currently does not grant “Local Admin” access to developers. This is causing a lot of grief as anything that requires elevated privileges needs to be done by the Desktop Support/Server Teams. In some cases this can take several days and requires our developers to have to show why they need this access. I personally think that all developers should have local administration rights and are currently fighting with management to achieve this but I would like to know what other people think about this. To achieve this I would like to hear what people believe are the pros and cons of letting developers have local admin access to their machines. Here are some I have come up with: Pros Loss time is keep low as developers can resolve issues that would normally require Local Admin Evaluation of tools and software are possible to improve productivity Desktop support time not wasted installing services and software on developers PC Cons Developers install software on local PC that could be malicious to others or inappropriate in a business environment Desktop Support required to support a PC that is not the norm Development done with admin access that then fails when promoted to another environment that does not have the same access level

• Master-Details with RadGridView for Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services RC2 and Entity Framework 4.0

  I have prepared a sample project with the Silverlight 4 version of RadGridView released yesterday. The sample project was created with Visual Studio 2010, WCF RIA Services RC 2 for Visual Studio 2010, and ADO.NET Entity Framework (.NET 4). I have decided to use the SalesOrderHeader and SalesOrderDetails tables from the Adventure Works Database, because they provide the perfect one-to-many relationship: I will not go over the steps for creating the ADO.NET Entity Data Model and the Domain Service Class. In case you are not familiar with them, you should start with Brad Abrams series of blog posts and read this blog after that. To enable the master-details relationship we need to modify two things. First of all we need to include the automatic retrieval of the child entities in the domain service class. • Registering OCX on 64-bit Windows 7

  I want to use MSCOMM control in my MS Excel 2010 VBA. The control shall appear in Tools-> Additional Controls dialog box in VBE of MS Excel 2010. I am trying to register MSCOMM32.OCX on my 64-bit Windows 7 machine. However, as I try to register it using regsvr32 as shown in the command window below, I am getting shown error popup. What am I missing here? Why is this component not getting registered? Or this is not the correct way to include MSCOMM control in MS Excel VBA?   This is a bit of an esoteric topic, but given the number of U.S. Companies (particularly oil companies) that operate and have subsidiaries in Venezuela, I think it is worthy of an honorable mention. As you may or may not know, Venezuela's currency has had some changes over the years. In 2008, the Venezuelan Bolivar became the Bolivar Fuerte which dropped three zeros. So Bs.10,000 became Bs.F.10 and all their bills and coins were changed to reflect this. Then on Jan. 8, 2010, the government devalued the currency by 100%. The conversion from VEF to USD dropped from 2.15 to 4.30. (I always wanted to visit Venezuela; I guess it's time to book my vacation). The SEC recently labeled Venezuela a highly inflationary economy. This means that US companies with investments/subsidiaries in Venezuela will need to apply highly inflationary accounting rules starting on Jan. 1, 2010. In addition, companies need to make more detailed disclosures when the Venezuelan reported balances differ from the actual US dollar denominated balances. In a nut shell, if you formerly used translation, then starting Jan 1 of this year, you must now use remeasurement (or temporal method) to restate your Venezuelan entity's financial statements. See ASC topic 830, Foreign Currency Matters, which states that "[t]he financial statements of a foreign entity in a highly inflationary economy shall be remeasured as if the functional currency were the reporting currency." For you non-accountants that I haven't bored and are still reading at this point, the reason why the SEC is doing this is to ensure financial statements are presented as accurately as possible. Hyperinflationary economies have volatile currencies, such as Venezuela (it's not every day a currency devalues 100% overnight) which can distort financial statements if the local currency (Venezuelan Bolivar Fuerte) is used as the functional currency. To make financial statements more accurate, the reporting currency of the U.S. parent (US dollars) should be used as the functional currency. FASB.orgactually has a nice write-up on this.

• DevDays ‘00 The Netherlands day #2

  Day 2 of DevDays 2010 and again 5 interesting sessions at the World Forum in The Hague. The first session of the today in the big world forum theater was from Scott Hanselman, he gives a lap around .NET 4.0. In his way of presenting he talked about all kind of new features of .NET 4.0 like MEF, threading, parallel processing, changes and additions to the CLR and DLR, WPF and all new language features of .NET 4.0. After a small break it was ready for session 2 from Scott Allen about Tips, Tricks and Optimizations of LINQ. He talked about lazy and deferred executions, the difference between IQueryable and IEnumerable and the two flavors of LINQ syntax. The lunch was again very good prepared and delicious, but after that it was time for session 3 Web Vulnerabilities and Exploits from Alex Thissen. This was no normal session but more like a workshop, we decided what kind of subjects we discussed, the subjects where OWASP, XSS and other injections, validation, encoding. He gave some handy tips and tricks how to prevent such attacks. Session 4 was about the new features of C# 4.0 from Alex van Beek. He talked about Optional- en Named Parameters, Generic Co- en Contra Variance, Dynamic keyword and COM Interop features. He showed how to use them but also when not to use them. The last session of today and also the last session of DevDays 2010 was about WCF Best Practices from Gerben van Loon. He talked about 7 best practices that you must know when you are going to use WCF. With some quick demos he showed the problem and the solution for some common issues. It where two interesting days and next year i sure will be attending again.

• CouchDB crashes at startup when path to config file has space(s)

  I'm hoping to run CouchDB as a per-user Launch Agent on OS X. I'm using the coucdbx-core folder from the CouchDB Server.app as the base of my CouchDB deployment. I'd like each user to have their own couch instance (on a different port), necessitating separate config files for each instance. The logical place to put these files is in ~/Library/Application Support/ for each user. I can put the entire distribution in ~/Library/Application Support/my-app/coucdbx, and put the .ini at ~/Library/Application Support/my-app/local.ini. Starting couchdb as bin/couchdb -a ../local.ini (from ~/Library/Application Support/my-app/coucdbx) works great. But I'd like to save every user the ~50MB couchdbx and install the couchdbx-core in a shared location (e.g. within my app's .app bundle). When I do this, the path to the per-user config file contains a space, and I get the following error when starting CouchDB: $ bin/couchdb -n -a ~/Library/Application\ Support/us.physion.ovation/default.ini {"init terminating in do_boot",{{badmatch,{error,{bad_return,{{couch_app,start,[normal,["/Users/hs/prj/build-couchdb/build/etc/couchdb/default.ini","/Users/hs/prj/build-couchdb/build/etc/couchdb/local.ini"]]},{'EXIT',{{badmatch,{error,{error,enoent}}},[{couch_server_sup,start_server,1,[{file,"/Users/hs/prj/build-couchdb/dependencies/couchdb/src/couchdb/couch_server_sup.erl"},{line,56}]},{application_master,start_it_old,4,[{file,"application_master.erl"},{line,274}]}]}}}}}},[{couch,start,0,[{file,"/Users/hs/prj/build-couchdb/dependencies/couchdb/src/couchdb/couch.erl"},{line,18}]},{init,start_it,1,[]},{init,start_em,1,[]}]}} Is there any way to provide a config file at the command line, if that config file's path includes space(s)? Well you can verify the other options, but with these changes you will be able to start the VM. Note: Sometime the VM owner may share some instructions, if so follow his instructions.8. Click Ok and Push Start Button, and enjoy your Virtual Machine

  Data Quality Governance Data quality is very important to every organization, bad data cost an organization time, money, and resources that could be prevented if the proper governance was put in to place.  Data Governance Program Criteria: Support from Executive Management and all Business Units Data Stewardship Program  Cross Functional Team of Data Stewards Data Governance Committee Quality Structured Data It should go without saying but any successful project in today’s business world must get buy in from executive management and all stakeholders involved with the project. If management does not fully support a project because they see it is in there and the company’s best interest then they will remove/eliminate funding, resources and allocated time to work on the project. In essence they can render a project dead until it is official killed by the business. In addition, buy in from stake holders is also very important because they can cause delays increased spending in time, money and resources because they do not support a project. Data Stewardship programs are administered by a data steward manager who primary focus is to support, train and manage a cross functional data stewards team. A cross functional team of data stewards are pulled from various departments act to ensure that all systems work to ensure that an organization’s goals are achieved. Typically, data stewards are subject matter experts that act as mediators between their respective departments and IT. Data Quality Procedures Data Governance Committees are composed of data stewards, Upper management, IT Leadership and various subject matter experts depending on a company. The primary goal of this committee is to define strategic goals, coordinate activities, set data standards and offer data guidelines for the business. Data Quality Policies In 1997, Claudia Imhoff defined a Data Stewardship’s responsibility as to approve business naming standards, develop consistent data definitions, determine data aliases, develop standard calculations and derivations, document the business rules of the corporation, monitor the quality of the data in the data warehouse, define security requirements, and so forth. She further explains data stewards responsible for creating and enforcing polices on the following but not limited to issues.
