  • how to re-factor a web site for 3G?

    Hello everyone, I have a traditional web site which serves users from desktop computer browsers. I am using Microsoft technologies, like ASP.Net, C#, .Net, SQL Server 2008, IIS and Windows Server 2008. Nowadays, more and more users are using 3G mobile phones, and I am wondering from software perspective, how to add new features to my web site (do I need a client application runs on mobile phone as well?) so that 3G users could have good user experience or new kinds of 3G specific applications? Any recommended documents or real samples are welcome. For 3G users, I want to distinguish from traditional less-powered and slow network access GPRS mobile phone. thanks in advance, George

  • Adding to page control collection from inside a user control

    I have an asp.net usercontrol which represents a "popup" dialog. Basically, it's a wrapper for the jQuery UI dialog which can be subclassed to easily make dialogs. As part of this control, I need to inject a div into the page the control is used on, either at the very top or very bottom of the form so that when the popup is instantiated, it's parent is changed to this div. This allows "nested" popups without the child popup being trapped inside the parent popup. The trouble is, I can't find a safe way to inject this div into the page. A usercontrol doesn't have a preinit event, so I can't do it there, and calling Page.Form.Controls.Add(...) in Init, Load or PreRender causes the standard exception "The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases." I thought I had found a solution by using... ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(Page, Me.GetType, UniqueID + "_Dialog_Div", containerDiv, False) ... which seemed to work well normally, but recently a coworker tried putting an UpdatePanel inside the dialog and now she's getting the error "The script tag registered for type 'ASP.controls_order_viewzips_ascx' and key 'ctl00$ContentBody$OViewZips_Dialog_Div' has invalid characters outside of the script tags: . Only properly formatted script tags can be registered." How are you supposed to add controls to the pages control collection from inside a user control?

But this function filled the grid only once when i click the parent node for the first time.   • MSBuild - How to build a .NET solution file (in an XML task script) from pre-written command line commands

    Hello. I have been studying MSBuild as I have the need to automate my development shop's builds. I was able to easily write a .BAT file that invokes the VS command prompt and passes my MSBuild commands to it. This works rather well and is kinda nifty. Here is the contents of my .BAT build file: call "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\bin\amd64\vcvars64.bat" cd C:\Sandbox\Solution msbuild MyTopSecretApplication.sln /p:OutputPath=c:\TESTMSBUILDOUTPUT /p:Configuration=Release,Platform=x86 pause ^ This works well but I now have the need to use the MSBuild task for TeamCity CI. I have tried to write a few MSBuild scripts but I cannot get them to work the same. What is the equivalent build script to the command I am using in my .BAT file? Any ideas? Is there an easy way to: return 304 "Not Modified" from action; include "Last-Modified" time stamp in the response. I use return Content('my data'); for action result.   • How does one receive and post text messages on a website, a la Twitter?

    I've looked around at pretty much all the SMS posts here on SO and the best answer I've come up with so far is ZeepMobile. The only problem is, they're "in beta" and aren't readily accepting users. Is there a workaround for this, maybe receiving an email via text (kind of like how TwitPic does it?) somehow and parsing it? Basically all I want to do is have people text the site so that their message posts... I don't need to send any messages (actually I would prefer not to). Pretty much the same functionality as Twitter (same functionality, but no I'm not building a Twitter-esque service because I am not crazy). PS this will be a VB.NET ASP.NET 3.5 solution. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

    We are in design phase of a project whose goal is replatforming an ASP classic application to ASP.Net 4.0. The system needs to be entirely web based. There are several new requirements for the new system that make this a challenging project: The system needs to be database independent. It must, at version 1.0, support MS SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, Postgres and DB2. The system must be able to allow easy reporting from the database by third party reporting packages. The system must allow an administrative end user to create their own tables in the database through the web based interface. The system must allow an administrative end user to design/configure a user interface (web based) where they can select tables and fields in the system (either our system's core tables or their own custom tables created in #3) The system must allow an administrative end user to create and maintain relationships between these custom created tables, and also between these tables and our system's core tables. The system must allow an administrative end user to create business rules that will enforce validation, show/hide UI elements, block certain actions based on the identity of specific users, specific user groups or privileges. Essentially it's a system that has some core ticket tracking functionality, but allows the end user to extend the interface, business rules and the database. Is this possible to build in a .Net, Web based environment? If so, what do you think the level of effort would be to get this done? We are currently a 6 person shop, with 2.5 full time developers.

You can take advantage of this by querying the UA string for compatibilities and present options accordingly to the end user.As applications will continue to add and modify this string you'll want to query the string for parts not the entire string. This article explores how to present a filtering interface to the user and then only show those records that conform to the filtering criteria. In particular, the demo we examine in this installment presents an interface with three filtering criteria: the category, minimum price, and whether to omit discontinued products. Using this interface the user can apply one or more of these criteria, allowing a variety of filtered displays.   • Force Blank TextBox with ASP.Net MVC Html.TextBox

    I recently ran into a problem with the following scenario: I have data with a parent/child data with a one-to-many relationship from the parent to the child. I want to be able to update parent and existing child data AND add a new child record all in a single post. I don't want to create a model just to store the new values. One of the things I LOVE about MVC is how flexible it is in dealing with posted data.  If you have data that isn't in your model, you can simply use the non-strongly-typed HTML helper extensions and pass the data into your actions as parameters or use the FormCollection.  I thought this would give me the solution I was looking for.  I simply used Html.TextBox("NewChildKey") and Html.TextBox("NewChildValue") and added parameters to my action to take the new values.  So here is what my action looked like: [HttpPost] public ActionResult EditParent(int? id, string newChildKey, string newChildValue, FormCollection forms) {     Model model = ModelDataHelper.GetModel(id ?? 0);     if (model != null)     {         if (TryUpdateModel(model))         {             if (ModelState.IsValid)             {                 model = ModelDataHelper.UpdateModel(model);             }             string[] keys = forms.GetValues("ChildKey");             string[] values = forms.GetValues("ChildValue");             ModelDataHelper.UpdateChildData(id ?? 0, keys, values);             ModelDataHelper.AddChildData(id ?? 0, newChildKey, newChildValue);             model = ModelDataHelper.GetModel(id ?? 0);         }        return View(report);     }    return new EmptyResult(); } The only problem with this is that MVC is TOO smart.  Even though I am not using a model to store the new child values, MVC still passes the values back to the text boxes via the model state.  The fix for this is simple but not necessarily obvious, simply remove the data from the model state before returning the view: ModelState.Remove("NewChildKey"); ModelState.Remove("NewChildValue"); Two lines of code to save a lot of headaches.

  • Using Telerik MVC with your own custom jQuery and or other plug-ins

    If you are using MVC it might be worth checking out the telerik controls (http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-mvc), they are free if you are doing an internal or “not for profit” application. If however you do choose to use them, you could come up against a little problem I had.  Using the telerik controls with your own custom jQuery.  In my case I was using the jQuery UI dialog. It kept throwing an error where I was setting my div to a dialog. Code Snippet $("#textdialog").dialog({ The problem is when you use the telerik mvc stuff you need to call ScriptRegistrar Code Snippet @Html.Telerik().ScriptRegistrar() in order to setup the javascript for the controls. By default this adds a reference to jQuery and if you have already added a reference to jQuery because you are using it elsewhere, this causes a problem. I found the solution here And it was to change the above ScriptRegistrar call to this… Code Snippet @Html.Telerik().ScriptRegistrar().jQuery(false).DefaultGroup(g => g.Combined(true).Compress(true));   If you come across this one on stackoverflow it wont work – in my case the HtmlEditor would render no problem, but was unusable.  Which is the same as someone else found when using the tab control – they went to the bother of re-writing the ScriptRegistrar.  Not for me that one!!

  • correct way to implement auth/acl in mvc

    I am looking into making a correctly laid out MVC auth/acl system. I think I want the authentication of a user (and the session handling) to be seperate from the ACL system. (I don't know why but this seems a good idea from the things I've read) What does mvc have to do with this question you ask? Because I wish for the application to be well integrated with my acl. I would like to check the $allowed array against the user currently (not) logged in and react accordingly. Is this a good way of doing things? I haven't seen much literature on mvc integration and auth. I want to make things as easy as possible.

  • Memory limit for running external executables within Asp.net

    I am using WkhtmltoPdf in my C# web application running in .NET 4.0 to generate PDFs from HTML files. In general everything works fine except when the size of the HTML file is below 250KB. Once the HTML file size increases beyond that, the process which runs the wkhtmltopdf.exe gives an exception as below. On the Task Manager, I have seen that the Memory value for the wkhtmltopdf.exe process does not increase beyond a value of 40,096 K, which I believe is the reason why the process is abandoned in between. How can we configure such that the memory limit for external exes can be increased? Is there any other way of solving this issue? More info: When I run the conversion from the command line directly, the PDF is generated fine. So, its unlikely to be a problem with WkhtmlToPdf. The error is from localhost. I have tried the same on the DEV server, with the same result.   • Roughly, what percentage of “business” users have .NET 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 installed?

    Home use has already (somewhat) been established, but I'm curious about business users. Approximately, what percentage of business users worldwide have .NET 3.5 runtime installed? Client profile will do, since that's what I compile my app to (though others may be interested in the full, so maybe answer that too). I'm only looking for rough estimates, but I'd like to hear separate percentage figures for: 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, 3.5 CP, 4.0, 4.0 CP, 4.5 (note: percentages won't total 100%, since many users can have two or more .NET versions simultaneously).
