• ASP.Net MVC DotNetOpenAuth Sample Issue on publish

  I'm trying to use the MSDN Open ID project template for ASP.NET MVC C#. I've been able to configure a local copy to run well. But when I publish it to my hosting provider - it craps out. The error is "500 internal server error". Is there something I should know about publishing this template that I haven't noticed? Here are some more details (for diligence): Hosting provider is GoDaddy/SQL2005/IIS7. When I configure & publish the blank MVC template, it works. The local database publishes successfully, but I haven't been able to troubleshoot the connection in web.config yet. I expect there are connection string problems in the file. I tried disabling all of the references to log4net, as it seemed to be invoked several times on startup. But those changes did not seem to make a difference in either the local or published application performance. My IDE is Visual Studio 2010 Pro Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• How are you supposed to layout a page in VS2010 without using tables?

  I have been using .NET since beta and HTML since the days of HotDog pro & notepad, using table layout of course. I am FINALLY ready to use only div, li, CSS for the layout, but my question is, what is the proper way to layout pages in VS2010? • .ico icons not showing up on Windows

  I followed the The Qt Resource System guide and the .ico icons appear on Linux. The icons are not showing up on Windows when I try to run the applicaton from Qt Creator. I suspect a plugin issue based on Qt/C++: Icons not showing up when program is run under windows O.S but I failed to figure out what to do from the guide How to Create Qt Plugins. Is it a plugin issue or why aren't the icons showing up on Windows? If it is a plugin issue: How do I tell my applicaton where to find the qico.dll? Details of the environment: Works on: Kubuntu 12.04 LTS, Qt Creator 2.4.1 and Qt 4.7.4 (64 bit) Fails on: Windows XP SP2 32 bit, Qt Creator 2.4.1 and Qt 4.7.4 (32 bit) Everyting is at its default (as installed out of the box), I did not mess with the settings. resources.qrc <!DOCTYPE RCC><RCC version="1.0"> <qresource> <file>images/spreadsheet.ico</file> </qresource> </RCC> Also tried with <qresource prefix="/">.   Hi Geeks, I have to use the third party static library for my qt application to run on windows. The third party provides me a .lib and .h file for use. These libraries are compiled with MSVC compiler. My qt Creator is using MinGW compiler to compile my application. I copied the .h and .lib file to my qt project directory and then added those in .pro file as follows QT += core gui TARGET = MyTest TEMPLATE = app LIBS += C:\Qt\2010.05\qt\MyTest\newApi.lib SOURCES += main.cpp\ mainwindow.cpp HEADERS += mainwindow.h \ newApi.h FORMS += mainwindow.ui Now I am getting some runtime error like this - Starting C:\Qt\2010.05\qt\MyTest-build-desktop\debug\MyTest.exe... C:\Qt\2010.05\qt\MyTest-build-desktop\debug\MyTest.exe exited with code -1073741515 Can any body suggest is this runtime error is due to mismatch of compiler? (because of my .lib file I added is comipled in MSVC compiler and my qt app is compiled using MinGW compiler) If not what may be the reason? Am I missing anything in adding the .h and .lib file to my qt project? If my MinGW compiler will not support the .lib file generated in MSVC compiler what may be the work-arround? Can I create the .lib files in MinGW compiler? or this format is supported only by MSVC compiler only? Please suggest...

• Can you recommend an easy to use easy to develop CMS?

  We need some easy way to manage web sites at our company, and we are evaluating some CMS tools for this purpose. We do not yet know what features the sites will need to have (but it will definitely be something with lots of functionalities), so we are looking for something with lots of features and more importantly to be easily extensible (if it does not have some feature, we at least want to be able to build-it by ourselves). We have no experience with Content Management Systems but we do with Java, so it has to be something written in Java. We evaluated some tools and from our perspective the following seem the promising of them (in no particular order): OpenCMS dotCMS (Community Edition vs Enterprise Edition) InfoGlue Alfresco (EE vs CE) Magnolia (EE vs EE Pro vs CE) Jahia (CE vs EE) Since we have no experience with either one of them, we were wondering if someone of you who have can share some information about how good they are or how easily they can be used and extended. I know similar questions have been asked on SO and I also know this is highly subjective and people will vote for closing it as soon as it is posted, but for us it is important to know what difficulties other people have been facing in using the above tools (we don’t want to walk a path that takes nowhere if other people already know it leads nowhere). Others could then vote on the posted answers if they agree or not. • Need a piece of advice about e-mail automation in ms exchange + ms office environment

  Hi, guys. I need your help in the following simple situation. I've got an MS Exchange server and some client computers running on XP with Office 2003 installed. And I've got a process I need to automate. Twice a day a known list of people sends an e-mail to a certain mailbox (let's call it manager's mailbox) - basically, an accomplishment report. After recieving letters from all of these people the mailbox owner sends and e-mail to another mailbox, meaning that a certain process is done. What I need to do is to replace this manager's mailbox with a depersonalized mailbox that will accumulate all the reports and automatically send a message after collecting all of them. I am definitely not in a "oh my God, what shold I do?" situation, and currently my imagination shows me a couple of ways to solve this problem, which I'm going to try, and I'm not ascking for a ready solution. But since I'm not experienced in Office/VBA developement, I'd like to ask a corresponding pro's opinion. Can you point me to a right direction from the best practices' point of view?

• Trial vs free with limited functionality

  Hi everyone, Not a programming question as such, but a bit more business oriented question about software product development. We have just released a small app, and is offering a free, fully functional trial which lasts for 15 days. I have the gut feeling however, that to reach any kind of penetration on the web, we'd need to offer a version which is free forever, but then has a few limitations in terms of functionality (still quite usable, but not full-throttle). For example, the Roboform browser plugin is somewhat similar in purpose to ours. Not functionality wise, but it's basically a little util that saves time and removes some repetitive-action pain. They offer a free version with limitations and then a pro version for around 30 USD. Roboform has gotten very much attention over the years, and I can't help to think that this is because they have a product which is obviously good, but also free, thus adoption becomes much higher than if they had only offered a 15 day trial. I am wondering if any of you have experience in a similar scenario? Or any thoughts on the two models? Again, I know it's not directly programming related, but it's still a question I feel best answered by a community of developers.

• MySQL to SQL Server ODBC Connector?

  My boss wants to have data in MySQL DBs used for our website to be "linked and synced" with a Financial Server that has its DB in SQL Server. Sooooo...even though I have no idea how to accomplish this, this just sounds like an absolute nightmare especially since the MySQL DB is most likely going to be hosted in the cloud and not on a machine next to the Financial Server. Any ideas how to accomplish this? (within reason?) Also, his big thing is he wants to basically pull up the data from any record a user enters and using data pulled from that do all sorts of calculations using ANOTHER program that stores its data (apparently) in SQL Server. Thinking of all the data I might have to convert makes me very uneasy. Please tell a ODBC eliminates complicated junk like this. :/ I'm trying to talk him into just having MySQL do a nightly dump into a CSV file or something and using that (rather than connector) to update the SQL Server DBs. I guess I'm just not that comfortable with a server and/or programming I have no say over being connected DIRECTLY to my MySQL DB for the website. If there's no good answer for this, can anyone offer a suggestion as to what I can say to talk him out of this? (I'm a low-level IT guy w/ a decent grasp on programming...but I'm no expert - should I try to push this off to a seasoned IT pro?) Thanks in advance.

• How can I prevent text displacement for some foreign language fonts?

  I have a multilingual project (currently 13 languages), which uses many different font variations of "Helvetica Neue", mostly bold, condensed and regular cuts from the LinoType Pro font set ( which includes western european characters) and the same for cyrillic. We will probably add chinese and japanese variations in the future. I have set up the project to use different CSS stylesheets and separately load the fonts for each version, depending on which language the user selects, so I can have different line heights, kerning and/or font sizes to make everything keep the original look, even if the fonts look nothing alike. All of this works well, except for one problem: For some reason, all cyrillic letters seem to be displaced. They appear 2-3 pixels below the correct base line, and actually protrude across the textfield's bottom border, even when the field is set to autosize. When I use textfield.getCharBoundaries(), all values seem to be correct, even though they obviously aren't rendered correctly. To make everything look neat, I could of course manually move all problematic textfields up or down according to language and font size, but I was wondering if there was some way to prevent or at least detect this kind of displacement in order to automatically handle the adjustments - the Flash Player should have some sort of information on how things are rendered, shouldn't it? Have any of you had similar problems? Or better yet: a solution?

• QTCreator 3.1 design tab not working

  I’m currently using QtCreator 3.1 and qt-everywhere-opensource-src-5.2.1 on Ubuntu 12.04 My project is correctly working, i.e., i can build it and run without any trouble. But i’ve got some problems with the design tab inside Qtcreator. First, on all qml file (even with example projects), i have an error message “Using Qt Quick code model instead of Qt Quick2 (M324) (4:1)” and i can’t use the design editor. Second, on qml files with other import than QtQuick 2.2 (for me QtQml.Models 2.1 and QtQuick.Controls 1.1), the import is underlined in red with the error message “QML module not found”. I’ve tried to edit the .pro file by adding QML2_IMPORT_PATH=/home/user/qt-everywhere-opensource-src-5.2.1/qtquickcontrols/qml/QtQuick/Controls/ (also tried with QML_IMPORT_PATH), it doesn’t work. Then, I tried to add it to my path in a terminal using “export QML_IMPORT_PATH=/home/user/qt-everywhere-opensource-src-5.2.1/qtquickcontrols/qml/QtQuick/Controls/” and this time, in the error message, i can see the added path in the error message, but it still doesn’t work. Anyone has an idea to help me ? Thx !

• Division of text follow the cursor via Javascript/Jquery

  Dear experts, I wanted have a dynamic division of content follow you with the cursor in the web browser space. I often experience a lag on the browser as a drag my mouse from one place to another. Is there a way to accomplish this easier and faster and more intuitive. I know you can use the cursor image technique but thats something I'm looking to avoid. Thanks in advance.

• Move to php in windows? Concern, hints, "please don't do!"?

  I am considering to move frome Microsoft languages to PHP (just for web dev) which has quite an interesting syntax, a perlish look (but a wider programmer base) and it allows me to reuse the web without reinventing it. I have some concerns too. I would be more than happy to gather some wisdom from stackoverflow community, (challenge to my opinions warmly welcome). Here are my doubts. Efficiency. Cgi are slow, what I am supposed to use? Fastcgi? Or what else? Efficiency + stability. Is PHP on windows really stable and a good choice in terms of performances? Database. I use very often MSSQL (I regret, i like it). Could I widely and efficiently interface PHP with MSSQL (using smartly stored pro, for example). XSLT + XML performance. I work quite a lot with XML and XSLT and I really find the MS xml parser a great software component. Are parser used in PHP fast, reliable and efficient (I am interested mainly in DOM, not SAX)? Objects. Is the PHP object programming model valid end efficient? 6 Regex. How efficient is PHP processing regexp? Many thanks for your advices.

• some problem with iOS 4.2.1

  Hi, I've been developing an app with MacBook Pro (MBP) so far. Last week one of my friends gave me new macbook air 11"(MBA). so Now I can test my code with more than one machine with the same version of developing tools - Both machine has Xcode (3.2.5) and iOS SDK 4.2.1). After some point my app starts get terminated suddenly(iPhone sumulator), and I was using MBP. I got no error message whatsoever. it just stops. I reckon the crash comes from dealing with memory, like 'release'/ 'double-release'. (I'm not 100% sure though). Anyway I thought there must be some mistake within my code for sure. -Confusion starts from this part.- With my MBA, on the other hand, I don'y see any crash. It just works fine. There is nothing different between MBA & MBP except the h/w specifications. Same code, same versions of XCode and iOS SDK. Is the fact that no crash at MBA suggesting that I have to look somewhere else than the code itself? I red some article and Q&As on iOS4.2.1 and XCode 3.2.5 that the most recent version of XCode doesn't recognize the iOS 4.2.1 since the 4.2.1 came out later the 3.2.5. Is it the reason? I have no idea at this moment what should be the next move. thanks

• Reason for socket.error

  Hi, I am a complete newbie when it comes to python, and programming in general. I've been working on a little webapp for the past few weeks trying to improve my coding chops. A few days ago my laptop was stolen so I went out and got a new MacBook Pro. Thank God I had everything under subversion control. The problem is now that I am on my new machine a script that I was running has stopped working and I have no idea why. This is really the only part of what I have been writing that I borrowed heavily for existing scripts. It is from the widely available whois.py script and I have only slightly modified it as follows (see below). It was running fine on my old system (running ubuntu), but now the socket.error is being raised. I'm completely lost on this, and would really appreciate any help. • Trying to get codeblocks working on Mac, running Lion. Can't get the compiler set up properly

  First off, sorry if this is a stupid question. I installed code::blocks to try and get to know the program and start working on teaching myself c++. I have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7.3. I ave code::blocks 10.05. When I try to build a "Hello world" nothing happens. Based on some googling I've figured out that it's because code::blocks doesn't know where to find the debugger/compiler. Further googling yielded me this page which tells me to install Xcode and to fix some things in the code::blocks settings. However, this wiki obviously has not been updated since Apple went to the App store, because the file paths it gives for the compiler do not exist (there is no /Developer/* even after installing Xcode). Xcode 4.3.2 was already installed when I installed code::blocks and code::blocks "auto-detected" several compilers. They did not work. If anyone knows where Xcode hides its compilers now that Apple has moved to the app store, I would be much obliged.

• How to combine two separate unrelated Git repositories into one with single history timeline

  I have two unrelated (not sharing any ancestor check in) Git repositories, one is a super repository which consists a number of smaller projects (Lets call it repository A). Another one is just a makeshift local Git repository for a smaller project (lets call it repository B). Graphically, it would look like this A0-B0-C0-D0-E0-F0-G0-HEAD (repo A) A0-B0-C0-D0-E0-F0-G0-HEAD (remote/master bare repo pulled & pushed from repo A) A1-B1-C1-D1-E1-HEAD (repo B) Ideally, I would really like to merge repo B into repo A with a single history timeline. So it would appear that I originally started project in repo A. Graphically, this would be the ideal end result A0-A1-B1-B0-D1-C0-D0-E0-F0-G0-E1-H(from repo B)-HEAD (new repo A) A0-A1-B1-B0-D1-C0-D0-E0-F0-G0-E1-H(from repo B)-HEAD (remote/master bare repo pulled & pushed from repo A) I have been doing some reading with submodules and subtree (Pro Git is a pretty good book by the way), but both of them seem to cater solution towards maintaining two separate branch with sub module being able to pull changes from upstream and subtree being slightly less headache. Both solution require additional and specialized git commands to handle check ins and sync between master and sub tree/module branch. Both solution also result in multiple time-lines (with --squash you even get 3 timelines with subtree). The closest solution from SO seems to talk about "graft", but is that really it? The goal is to have a single unified repository where I can pull/push check-ins, so that there are no more repo B, just repo A in the end.

• Can't store UTF-8 in RDS despite setting up new Parameter Group using Rails on Heroku

  I'm setting up a new instance of a Rails(2.3.5) app on Heroku using Amazon RDS as the database. I'd like to use UTF-8 for everything. Since RDS isn't UTF-8 by default, I set up a new Parameter Group and switched the database to use that one, basically per this. Seems to have worked: SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%character%'; character_set_client utf8 character_set_connection utf8 character_set_database utf8 character_set_filesystem binary character_set_results utf8 character_set_server utf8 character_set_system utf8 character_sets_dir /rdsdbbin/mysql-5.1.50.R3/share/mysql/charsets/ Furthermore, I've successfully setup Heroku to use the RDS database. After rake db:migrate, everything looks good: CREATE TABLE `comments` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `commentable_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL, `parent_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL, `content` text COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci, `child_count` int(11) DEFAULT '0', `created_at` datetime DEFAULT NULL, `updated_at` datetime DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`), KEY `commentable_id` (`commentable_id`), KEY `index_comments_on_community_id` (`community_id`), KEY `parent_id` (`parent_id`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB AUTO_INCREMENT=4 DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_unicode_ci; In the markup, I've included: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> Also, I've set: production: encoding: utf8 collation: utf8_general_ci ...in the database.yml, though I'm not very confident that anything is being done to honor any of those settings in this case, as Heroku seems to be doing its own config when connecting to RDS. Now, I enter a comment through the form in the app: "Úbe® ƒåiL", but in the database I've got "Úbe® Æ’Ã¥iL" It looks fine when Rails loads it back out of the database and it is rendered to the page, so whatever it is doing one way, it's undoing the other way. If I look at the RDS database in Sequel Pro, it looks fine if I set the encoding to "UTF-8 Unicode via Latin 1". So it seems Latin-1 is sneaking in there somewhere. Somebody must have done this before, right? What am I missing?

  I have tried to compile code from Deitel's C# 2010 for programmers. I copied it exactly out of the book, but it still can't find main, even though I declared it in one of the classes. • Randomly Position A Div

  I'm looking for a way to randomly position a div anywhere on a page (ONCE per load). I'm currently programming a PHP-based fantasy pet simulation game. One of the uncommon items on the game is a "Four Leaf Clover." Currently, users gain "Four Leaf Clovers" through random distribution - but I would like to change that (it's not interactive enough!). What I Am Trying To Do: The idea is to make users search for these "Four Leaf Clovers" by randomly placing this image anywhere on the page: (my rendition of a four leaf clover) I'd like to do this using a Java/Ajax script that generates a div, and then places it anywhere on the page. And does not move it once it's been placed, until the page is reloaded. I've tried so many Google searches, and the closest thing that I've found so far is this (click), from this question. But, removing the .fadein, .delay, and .fadeout stopped the script from working entirely. I'm not by any means a pro with Ajax. Is what I'm trying to do even possible?

  Hi all, Is it possible to delete-protect a file/folder using Registry or using a custom written Windows Service in C#? Using Folder Permissions it is possible, but i am looking for a solution that even restricts the admin from deleting specific folders. The requirement is that the administrator must not be easily track the nature of protection and/or may not be able to avert it easily. Obviously all administrators will be able to revert the procedure if the technique is clearly understood. Like folder Permissions/OwnerShip Settings can easily be reset by an administrator. SO that is not an option. Folder protection software can easily be uninstalled and show clear indication that a particular folder is protected by some special kind of software. SO that too is not an option. Most antivirus programs protect folders and files in Program Dir. Windows itself doesnt allow certain files such as registry files in c:\windows\system32\config to not even copied. Such a protection is desired for folders which allowse to read and write to files but not allow deletion. Similar functionality is desired. The protection has to seemless and invisible. I do not want to use any protection features like FolderLock and Invisible secrets/PC Security and Desktop password etc. Moreover, the solution has to be something other than folder encryption. The solution has to be OS-native so ** that it may implemented ** pro grammatically using C#/VB.Net. Please help. Thanks

• Response time increasing (worsening) over time with consistent load

  Ok. I know I don't have a lot of information. That is, essentially, the reason for my question. I am building a game using Flash/Flex and Rails on the back-end. Communication between the two is via WebORB. Here is what is happening. When I start the client an operation calls the server every 60 seconds (not much, right?) which results in two database SELECTS and an UPDATE and a resulting response to the client. This repeats every 60 seconds. I deployed a test version on heroku and NewRelic's RPM told me that response time degraded over time. One client with one task every 60 seconds. Over several hours the response time drifted from 150ms to over 900ms in response time. I have been able to reproduce this in my development environment (my Macbook Pro) so it isn't a problem on Heroku's side. I am not doing anything sophisticated (by design) in the server app. An action gets called, gets some data from the database, performs an AR update and then returns a response. No caching, etc. Any thoughts? Anyone? I'd really appreciate it.
