• Ruby: change each value in a hash with something like #collect for arrays?

  Hi! I'd like to replace each value in a hash with value.some_method. For example in a simple hash {"a" = "b", "c" = "d"} every value should be .upcase-d so it looks like {"a" = "B", "c" = "D"}. I tried #collect and #map but always just get arrays back. Is there an 'elegant' way to do this? Thanks in advance, Adam Nonymous UPDATE: Damn, I forgot: The hash is in an instance variable which should not be changed. I need a new hash with the changed values, but would prefer not to define that variable explicitly and then loop over the hash filling it. Something like new_hash = hash.magic {...} ;)

• Redimming arrays in VBA

  I have 3 arrays of data, that are filled by reading off of an excel sheet, some of the points of data are missing and as such have just been entered into excel as "NA" so I want to look through my array and find each instance of these NA's and remove them from the array since the information is useless. I need to update all three arrays at the same time. • Hot deploy on Heroku with no downtime

  A bad side of pushing to Heroku is that I must push the code (and the server restarts automatically) before running my db migrations. This can obviously cause some 500 errors on users navigating the website having the new code without the new tables/attributes: the solution proposed by Heroku is to use the maintenance mode, but I want a way with no downside letting my webapp running everytime! Is there a way? For example with Capistrano: I prepare the code to deploy in a new dir I run (backward) migrations and the old code continue to work perfectly I swith mongrel instance to the new dir and restart the server ...and I have no downtime!

  In the olden times of .NET 1.1, I could use the SoapFormatter to find out exactly what was getting serialized when I copied an object into the clipboard. Fast forward to 2010, and I tried to do the same trick. It turns out the SoapFormatter does not support generics. Is there an alternative way to find out exactly what binary objects are serialized into the clipboard? For example lets say I have this class: public class Foo { public List<Goo> Children; } If I send an instance of it to the clipboard, I would like to take a look at what is in the clipboard to see if it's children list was included or not. Update: I was finally able to find the over copied field with the debugger. Visual Studio did it's job.

Now when I run the jar then my login page is displayed then i minimize the application and again run the jar then another instance of my application is displayed (means now in my system I have two login page. 1 is in minimized format and another is in normal state. But I want that if in my system login page is already running and is minimized then if i run the jar once again then it will not start as a new application rather it should maximize the earlier login page.   Guidelines for code-golf on SO We've all seen phone numbers that are put into words: 1-800-BUY-MORE, etc. What is the shortest amount of code you can write that will produce all the possible combinations of words for a 7 digit US phone number. Input will be a seven digit integer (or string, if that is simpler), and assume that the input is properly formed. Output will be a list of seven character strings that For instance, the number 428-5246 would produce GATJAGM GATJAGN GATJAGO GATJAHM GATJAHN GATJAHO and so on..... Winning criteria will be code from any language with the fewest characters that produce every possible letter combination. Additional Notes: To make it more interesting, words can be formed only by using the letters on a North American Classic Key Pad phone with three letters per number as defined here.That means that Z and Q are excluded. For the number '1', put a space. For the number '0', put a hyphen '-' Bonus points awarded for recognizing output as real English words. Okay, not really. ;-)

Does .NET CLR access(read) properties in a class, when it's instatiating the class? any other methods? Thanks

  In Ruby, it seems that a lot of coerce() help can be done by def coerce(something) [self, something] end that's is, when 3 + rational is needed, Fixnum 3 doesn't know how to handle adding a Rational, so it asks Rational#coerce for help by calling rational.coerce(3), and this coerce instance method will tell the caller: # I know how to handle rational + something, so I will return you the following: [self, something] # so that now you can invoke + on me, and I will deal with Fixnum to get an answer So what if most operators can use this method, but not when it is (a - b) != (b - a) situation? Can coerce() know which operator it is, and just handle those special cases, while just using the simple [self, something] to handle all the other cases where (a op b) == (b op a) ? (op is the operator).

  I've two classes (A and B) that extend a base class BASE. I need to make a report that takes an array of such classes and the prints the fields of A or B. I tought of using conditional expressions, then casting to one or another (depending on a field value). But I can't cast, because I don't know how to refere to the current bean. To do this I am using a JRBeanCollectionDataSource filled with a List<BASE>. How do I cast every bean to A or B in a report (or subreport)? I tried: ((A)this) but it says basically that this contains the report instance, not the current bean and gives error.

  I've been reading that the static methods of the File Class are better used to perform small and few tasks on a file like checking to see if it exists and that we should use an instance of the FileInfo Class if we are going to perform many operations on a specific file. I understand this and can simply use it that way blindly but I would like to know why is there a difference ? What is it about the way they work that make them suitable for different situations ? What is the point of having this 2 different classes that seem do the same in different ways ? It would be helpful if someone could answer at least one of this questions.

• C# Getting Just Date From Timestamp

  If I have a timestamp in the form: yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss:mmm How can I just extract the date from the timestamp? For instance, if a timestamp reads: "2010-05-18 08:36:52:236" what is the best way to just get 2010-05-18 from it. What I'm trying to do is isolate the date portion of the timestamp, define a custom time for it to create a new time stamp. Is there a more efficient way to define the time of the timestamp without first taking out the date, and then adding a new time?

  Hi guys. I'm writing a django project, and I need to have a parallel thread which performs certain tasks. The project will be deployed in Apache2.2 with mod_wsgi. Actually my implementation consists on a thread with a while True - Sleep which is called from my django.wsgi file. Is this implementation correct? Two problems raises: does django.wsgi get called only once? Will I have just that instance of the thread running? And second, I need to "manually" visit at least a page to have the Thread run. Is there a workaround? Does anyone has some hints on better solutions? Thanks in advance.

  I'm new to Python... and coming from a mostly Java background, if that accounts for anything. I'm trying to understand polymorphism in Python. Maybe the problem is that I'm expecting the concepts I already know to project into Python. But I put together the following test code: class animal(object): "empty animal class" class dog(animal): "empty dog class" myDog = dog() print myDog.__class__ is animal print myDog.__class__ is dog From the polymorphism I'm used to (e.g. java's instanceof), I would expect both of these statements to print true, as an instance of dog is an animal and also is a dog. But my output is: False True What am I missing?

• Keeping a large volume of data in Session - Suggestions / alternatives?

  I'm developing a web app for which the client wants us to query their data as little as possible. The data will be coming from a Microsoft CRM instance. So we've agreed that data will only be queried as and when it is needed, therefore if a web user wants to see a list of contacts (for example) that list is fetched into a local DataTable. Then if a new contact is created on the website the new contact is sent to CRM and added to the local DataTable at the same time. Likewise for edits. If the user then looks at their contacts again the data will just come from the local DataTable. At the moment local data is being kept in Session but my concern is that too much memory will start being used up. However traffic is expected to be pretty small, perhaps no more than 20 concurrent users so am I worrying about nothing or is there a better way you can suggest to handle this?

  I have been loading an assembly via Assembly.LoadFrom(@"path"); and then doing Type t = asm.GetType("Test.Test"); test = Activator.CreateInstance(t, new Object[] { ... }); and it was working fine, but now I moved the dll I am getting the following System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. --- System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissons.SecurityPermission, etc .. For the sake of brevity it seems the demand was for an PermissionSet that allowed ControlAppDomain and it's not getting it. My question is how can I create this permissionset and pass it to the instance or assembly? I've been googling for hours to no avail.

What I'm trying to do is to convert a string into a link if any word contains the % (percentage) character. For instance if I have the string "go to %mysite", I'd like to convert the mysite word into a link. Does the lock occur on the object, or does it get as specific as the variables inside the synchronized method?
