  • What does a beginner need to know before switching to Ubuntu?

    - by Natrium
I have never worked with Linux before. I always used Windows. But I'm considering installing Ubuntu on my machine. I read installing Ubuntu should be very easy. But are there any thing I need to keep in mind during the installation? What are the first things I have to do when I completed the installation? (I wanted to tag this with 'beginner' but I am not allowed, so I tagged with 'installation')

  • Ubuntu 12.04 image size 732MB, will it fit a standard CD?

    - by memius
I have an old computer that can't handle a boot stick install, so i have to create an actual, old fashioned boot CD. However, the image size for Ubuntu 12.04 is 732MB, which is too large for a CD, which can hold only 700MB. The maintainers of Ubuntu 12.04 say the image size will never go over 700MB, and indeed, the download size seemed to be 689MB. Brasero says it won't burn the CD because the file is too big, what's going on?

  • How to view files backed up to Ubuntu One by Déjà Dup?

    - by irrational John
I decided to try out the Ubuntu Backup system application on my 11.10 partition. Currently I am just using the default settings to back up folders in my Home (~) folder to the deja-dup in my Ubuntu One cloud. I have not been able to figure out how to view which files have been saved to the backup location other than by restoring them to a temp folder and then seeing what was restored. I'm hoping there is a less kludgy way to just find out what has or has not been backed up.

  • Is there any way to move the launcher in ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

    - by asker
I'm am fairly new to Ubuntu and am finding it absolutely wonderful except for one thing, which is the inability to move the launcher. I am used to using windows, and though I hated it, I would like the ability to move the launcher to the bottom, both because I find it more convenient and familiar. I've surfed around and found some methods for Ubuntu 11.10, but nothing for 12.04, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you all for your help!

    - by Jesse S
I am trying to install ubuntu onto my flash drive using the instructions from the website, http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx , and after step 8, the terminal asks for my password, which it accepts and then pops u this error message, dd: /dev/rdisk1bs=1m: Operation not supported. I have also tried making the last m in that statement capital and then the system does not ask me for my password but the error message still pops up. What is happening and why?

  • Upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 for better WIFI connection - Any problems to be expected?

    - by lindeblau
Since upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 on my ACER Aspire One D270 I have problems with WIFI-connectivity. I was planning now to upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 hoping to solve this problem. On reading the last bunch of questions posted here I find quite a few regarding problems which arose after installing Ubunto 14.04. Would like to get opinions - is it worth upgrading yet or are to many problems to be expected?

  • Has anyone tried the Lenovo USB 3.0 Dock on Ubuntu?

    - by user88360
I'm thinking on buying the Lenovo USB 3.0 Dock and use it with Ubuntu and Unity, but I haven't found information regarding if Ubuntu already has built-in drivers for it. The link to this product is this one: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=460&Code=0A33970#overview So, I'd just like to know if its a good idea getting it or I'd better not because I might have a difficult time trying to set it up. Thanks.

  • Is it possible to dual boot Mac OSX Lion with Ubuntu 12.04?

    - by tofu_bacon
I've read that it can be dangerous for your computer to try to run Ubuntu and that the safest option is to run it on an external hard drive. Is this true? (I don't want to run it through a Virtual Machine.) I would prefer to dual boot it, given that my hard drive has so much space. Update: So does this mean that even if I have Ubuntu installed, that my data would still be at risk due to, say, stability issues?

  • Strange permission errors in new PostgreSQL installation

    - by Bart van Heukelom
A freshly installed PostgreSQL (with configuration overwritten) won't start: $ sudo service postgresql start * Starting PostgreSQL 9.1 database server * Error: could not read /etc/postgresql/9.1/main/postgresql.conf: Permission denied Looks like it should be able to read it though: $ ls -l postgresql.conf -rw------- 1 postgres postgres 19450 2012-06-14 10:07 postgresql.conf But fine, I'll add chmod +r it to test if that works. $ sudo chmod +r postgresql.conf $ sudo service postgresql start * Starting PostgreSQL 9.1 database server * The PostgreSQL server failed to start. Please check the log output: Error: Could not open log file /var/log/postgresql/postgresql-9.1-main.log Huh? $ ls -l /var/log/postgresql/ total 4 -rw-r----- 1 postgres adm 827 2012-06-14 10:07 postgresql-9.1-main.log I don't get it. What can be wrong here? This used to work before. Can I maybe monitor what process attempts to open the file? It's Ubuntu 11.10 on EC2, using Chef. For completeness, here's the recipe: # Install PostgreSQL package "postgresql-9.1" # Stop server service "postgresql" do action :stop end # Overwrite configuration (setting data dir) template "/etc/postgresql/9.1/main/postgresql.conf" do source "postgresql-conf.erb" owner "postgres" group "postgres" end # Start server service "postgresql" do action :start end

  • Occasional disk I/O errors in SQLite

    - by Alix Axel
I have a very simple website running PHP and SQLite 3.7.9 (with PDO). After establishing the SQLite connection I immediately execute the following queries: PRAGMA busy_timeout=0; PRAGMA cache_size=8192; PRAGMA foreign_keys=ON; PRAGMA journal_size_limit=67110000; PRAGMA legacy_file_format=OFF; PRAGMA page_size=4096; PRAGMA recursive_triggers=ON; PRAGMA secure_delete=ON; PRAGMA synchronous=NORMAL; PRAGMA temp_store=MEMORY; PRAGMA journal_mode=WAL; PRAGMA wal_autocheckpoint=4096; This website only has one writer and a few occasional readers, so I don't expect any concurrency problems (and I'm even using WAL). Every couple of days, I've seen this error being reported by PHP: Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'PDOException' with message 'SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 10 disk I/O error' in ... Stack trace: #0 ...: PDO-exec('PRAGMA cache_si...') There are several things that make this error very weird to me: it's not a transient problem - no matter how many times I refresh the page, it won't go away the database file is not corrupted - the sqlite3 executable can open the database without problems If the following pragmas are commented out, PHP stops throwing the disk I/O exception: PRAGMA cache_size=8192; PRAGMA synchronous=NORMAL; PRAGMA journal_mode=WAL; Then, after successfully reconnecting to the database, I'm able to reintroduce these pragmas and the code with run smoothly for days - until eventually, the same error will occur without any apparent reason. I wasn't able to reproduce this error so far, so I'm clueless about the origin of it. I'm really curious what may be causing this problem... Any ideas? Environment: Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS PHP 5.4.15 SQLite 3.7.9 Database size: ? 10MiB Transaction (write) size: ? 1KiB EDIT: Might these symptoms have something to do with busy_timeout?

  • Postfix unable to create lock file, permission denied

  • Postfix Send Error: Must Issue STARTTLS command

  • Why does snmp fail to use its own MIBs?

    - by chrisdew
I've done a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04LTS, and installed the snmpd and snmp packages. If I type: snmpwalk -m ALL -v2c -c public localhost 1.3 I get swathes of errors, of the form: Cannot adopt OID in SQUID-MIB: cacheClients ::= { cacheProtoAggregateStats 15 } Cannot adopt OID in NET-SNMP-EXTEND-MIB: nsExtendLineIndex ::= { nsExtendOutput2Entry 1 } Cannot adopt OID in NET-SNMP-EXTEND-MIB: nsExtendOutLine ::= { nsExtendOutput2Entry 2 } Cannot adopt OID in UCD-SNMP-MIB: laIndex ::= { laEntry 1 } Cannot adopt OID in UCD-SNMP-MIB: laNames ::= { laEntry 2 } Cannot adopt OID in UCD-SNMP-MIB: laLoad ::= { laEntry 3 } Cannot adopt OID in UCD-SNMP-MIB: laConfig ::= { laEntry 4 } Cannot adopt OID in UCD-SNMP-MIB: laLoadInt ::= { laEntry 5 } Cannot adopt OID in UCD-SNMP-MIB: laLoadFloat ::= { laEntry 6 } Cannot adopt OID in UCD-SNMP-MIB: laErrorFlag ::= { laEntry 100 } Cannot adopt OID in UCD-SNMP-MIB: laErrMessage ::= { laEntry 101 } Cannot adopt OID in NET-SNMP-AGENT-MIB: nsNotifyRestart ::= { netSnmpNotifications 3 } Cannot adopt OID in NET-SNMP-AGENT-MIB: nsNotifyShutdown ::= { netSnmpNotifications 2 } Cannot adopt OID in NET-SNMP-AGENT-MIB: nsNotifyStart ::= { netSnmpNotifications 1 } There a literally hundreds of these. If snmp doesn't even like the distro-included MIBs, what chance to I have of getting my own used? (I get the same form of error with my own MIB, on a different machine, which is why I set up a clean install.) Do other distros have this issue? Is there something obvious that I am overlooking here? Thanks, Chris.

  • Unable to install PHP-FPM on Apache (Failed to connect to FastCGI server)

    - by Nyxynyx
I have been having problem installing php-fpm for use with apache2-mpm-worker. This is the guide that I am following. According to the guide's Step 5, Alias /php5-fcgi /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php5-fcgi FastCgiExternalServer /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php5-fcgi -host 127.0.0.1:9000 -pass-header Authorization However I cannot find php5-fcgi at /usr/lib, but only /usr/bin/php5-cgi and /usr/bin/php-cgi, which I am not sure if they are the same. So I changed the lines in Step 5 to: Alias /php5-fcgi /usr/bin/php5-fcgi FastCgiExternalServer /usr/bin/php5-fcgi -host 127.0.0.1:9000 -pass-header On restarting Apache, it's logs gave the errors: [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down [alert] (4)Interrupted system call: FastCGI: read() from pipe failed (0) [alert] (4)Interrupted system call: FastCGI: the PM is shutting down, Apache seems to have disappeared - bye [notice] Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu) mod_fastcgi/mod_fastcgi-SNAP-0910052141 configured -- resuming normal operations [notice] FastCGI: process manager initialized (pid 16348) And on loading the index page [error] [client 10.0.2.2] (111)Connection refused: FastCGI: failed to connect to server "/usr/bin/php5-cgi": connect() failed [error] [client 10.0.2.2] FastCGI: incomplete headers (0 bytes) received from server "/usr/bin/php5-cgi" [error] [client 10.0.2.2] File does not exist: /var/www/mydomain/public/favicon.ico Question: Any idea why php5-fcgi is missing, and how should this problem be fixed? The following shows up in the syslog with ufw enabled: 50:15:15:aa:ae:8d:7d:e4:7a:97:08:00 SRC=79.236.233.97 DST=78.46.101.252 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=1 ID=33400 PROTO=UDP SPT=63757 DPT=33466 LEN=32 Nov 4 16:20:36 web kernel: [8078158.260409] [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:56:15:15:aa:ae:8d:7d:e4:7a:97:08:00 SRC=79.236.233.97 DST=78.46.101.252 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=1 ID=33401 PROTO=UDP SPT=63757 DPT=33467 LEN=32 Nov 4 16:20:41 web kernel: [8078163.262626] [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:56:15:15:aa:ae:8d:7d:e4:7a:97:08:00 SRC=79.236.233.97 DST=78.46.101.252 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=2 ID=33402 PROTO=UDP SPT=63757 DPT=33468 LEN=32 Nov 4 16:20:46 web kernel: [8078168.262927] [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:56:15:15:aa:ae:8d:7d:e4:7a:97:08:00 SRC=79.236.233.97 DST=78.46.101.252 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=2 ID=33403 PROTO=UDP SPT=63757 DPT=33469 LEN=32 Nov 4 16:20:51 web kernel: [8078173.260521] [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:56:15:15:aa:ae:8d:7d:e4:7a:97:08:00 SRC=79.236.233.97 DST=78.46.101.252 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=2 ID=33404 PROTO=UDP SPT=63757 DPT=33470 LEN=32 And the trace route just ends in starts after the Proxmox host machine. • Webmin / Virtualmin running php as www-data, is locked out of viewing .htaccess and writing

    - by Kirill
I've asked this on the virtualmin forums, but haven't had any help from there. Recently, "something" happened and it seems that the apache service has gone a bit weird. What it does: it runs all apache traffic as www-data and sometimes spawns the php5-cgi process as www-data, this is a problem because all the domain users own their directories and default permissions don't let www-data write to these folders (file uploads are dead) or read .htaccess (permalinks are broken in wordpress). I've googled this for about a week straight now, tried pretty much everything I could find and achieved nothing. The only thing that I think might actually be the cause of all this is this page: http:// - i.imgur.com/NYW3x.png (got shut down by the spam filter) So I figured if I set it to "default", this might magically start working again, but all it does is "crash" apache (all websites timeout). I figure it's something to do with the "mpm" module or something, but I can't find anything relevant in the settings to modify for it to work. Can someone please point me in the right direction? System info: Webmin version 1.580 Kernel and CPU Linux 2.6.35.4-rscloud on x86_64 Virtualmin version 3.90.gpl GPL Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid) A couple screenshots of top http://i.imgur.com/U2DTK.png http://i.imgur.com/sNPKs.png

  • Bind9 configured to start at boot, has to be started manually

    - by antik
I've configured bind9 on my system and it works great when it runs. It's currently configured to be run at runlevel 2 by setting: $ sudo update-rc.d bind9 enable 2 This appears to have done its work: $ tree -f /etc/rc?.d | grep -e ".*bind9$" |-- /etc/rc0.d/K85bind9 -> ../init.d/bind9 |-- /etc/rc2.d/S15bind9 -> ../init.d/bind9 |-- /etc/rc3.d/S15bind9 -> ../init.d/bind9 |-- /etc/rc4.d/S15bind9 -> ../init.d/bind9 |-- /etc/rc5.d/S15bind9 -> ../init.d/bind9 |-- /etc/rc6.d/K85bind9 -> ../init.d/bind9 Booting the system, I believe I am at runlevel 2: $ runlevel N 2 Given the above configuration, when the system is rebooted, bind does not come up. Only on occasion, for some reason, can I resolve hostnames immediately after startup. Far more often than not however, I cannot. I can interrogate the service's status: $ sudo /etc/init.d/bind9 status * could not access PID file for bind9 When the service doesn't start, I can start it successfully via a terminal by issuing $ sudo /etc/init.d/bind9 start And it works great from then on. Loopback configuration: $ ifconfig lo lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:1872 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:1872 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:220205 (220.2 KB) TX bytes:220205 (220.2 KB) Do I have my startup misconfigured? (I'm used to Gentoo so Ubuntu's model is still a little new to me) I'm not seeing any log indication of a failed attempt to start at boot in syslog. Is there someplace else I should be looking? What else should I look into to get bind working at startup?
