• Linux USB/Serial port won't create a tty device in /dev

  I am connecting a USB to serial driver port to my system and I get about halfway to where I need to go. When it is plugged in dmesg indicates: <6>usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using sl811-hcd and address 4 <6>usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice and lsusb Bus 2 Device 4: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port Bus 2 Device 1: ID 0000:0000 Bus 1 Device 1: ID 0000:0000 I get a series of usbdev2.4 (usbdev2.4, usbdev2.4_ep00, etc) devices in dev but no ttyUSB0 or anything that I can open with minicom. • Metro Apps on Windows 8 aren't working with static IP behind auth proxy

  In Windows 8 Professional, Metro Apps and Windows Update do not work with static IP settings behind authenticated proxy server. They work with DHCP on the same proxy settings (we have DHCP for wifi and static IP for LAN, both using the same proxy server). IE, Chrome and other desktop apps work nicely with both. Metro apps worked with an auth proxy (DHCP only), when I changed their proxy settings from the "edit group policy" option: Start → Settings → Edit Group Policy → Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Network Isolation → Internet Proxy for Apps How can I fix this?

  I would like to know that, We have a small Wireless Network that covers 40 mtrs indoor. Now we plan to expand our Network Coverage area apporx. 200 Mtrs (Outdoor). Due to our requirement we used TP- Link Access Point TL-WA5210G Outdoor(This AP covers 15Km area). We have 3 blocks between 200 mtrs, We like to connect all the laptops Lan Card directly with required Access-point. What should we do to achieve this, right now we are not getting the full strength signal, when we cross the 80 mtrs.   Let's say I have a computer A which is running postfix, computer B is running tinydns. On domain project.domain.com I'm running httpd server and other server with DNS (tinydns) have entries like =project.domain.com:1.2.3.4:86400 and +project.domain.com:1.2.3.4:86400 where 1.2.3.4 is correct addres for server which runs httpd server. I also have a postfix mail server on 1.2.3.5 which I'd like to work with this domain (project.domain.com). I'm afraid that if I add another alias like +project.domain.com:1.2.3.5:86400 to tinydns configuration - it could break. How that entry should look like? Thank you for any hints.

• belkin wireless router connection drops for ~60sec every ~15 mins

  Hi, I have a belkin wireless-g router, model F5D7230-4. about every 10-15 minutes, for about 1-1.5 mins I won't be able to browse any web sites. during this period, I usually get replys from "ping google.com". maybe 4/5 times I'll get a reply, 1/5 times i don't. I have changed the router DNS entries from "get DNS server from ISP" to 8.8.8.8, google's DNS and that hasn't fixed the situation. This happens on several computers, running windows7, xp, ubuntu, and a mac, so it is definitely NOT an issue with a computer configuration. any ideas?

• How to route traffic through a specific SOCKS proxy on a per-app basis?

  I'm running a certain desktop app (actually via AIR if it makes any difference) which doesn't have any built-in proxy configuration settings. I need to get all traffic just from this app directed through a secure SOCKS proxy. This implies I can't use the global network preferences, as these would affect many other apps. Is there any way to force all network communication through a given SOCKS proxy on a per-app basis? It would also be helpful to know if there's a way to perform such routing globally, based on specific IP addresses (as this could allow for some reasonable workaround).

  I'm using nginx + passenger. I'm trying to understand the nginx response 200 and 304. What does this both means? Sometimes, it responses back in 304 and others only 200. Reading the YUI blog, it seems browser needs the header "Last-Modified" to verify with the server. I'm wondering why the browser need to verify the last modified date.   I have a 3 year old blog and its got around 16 articles/tutorials about some programming problems and solutions. It's getting pretty much a lot of view lately so I decided to apply for a google adsense account. When I first applied via blogger, google replied with the following statement: Page Type: In order to participate in Google AdSense, publishers' websites and application information must satisfy the following guidelines: - Your website must be your own top-level domain (www.example.com and not www.example.com/mysite). - You must provide accurate personal information with your application that matches the information on your domain registration. - Your website must contain substantial, original content... So, as I understood it, I decide to buy a domain and point my blogger blog to that new naked domain. and here is the newly bought domain where all the contents of my old blog resides. http://icodeya.com/ I reapplied, hoping that this time, I will make the cut. But then I got this reply Further detail: Unable to review your site: While reviewing http://www.icodeya.com/, we found that your site was down or unavailable. We suggest you check whether there was a typo in the URL submitted. When your site is operational, you can resubmit your application with the correct site by following the directions below. I'm a bit disappointed. Maybe I did something wrong with DNS configuration or something. But you can clearly see that my site is fully functional. I heard that google sends robots to crawl on to the site etc. It's just sad because I invested on a domain name, and now I can't even find ways to earn from it. Any tips?

• Password Expired Server 2008 R2

  Hello everybody, We're facing some trouble with our Server 2008 R2 installation. The passwords expired and we're prompted to change the password. After changing it, we get following error message: Configuration Information could no be read from the domain controller, either because the machine is unavailable, or access has been denied. But we aren't even using a domain controller. So we tried running the server in Safe Mode where we get following message after changing the password: An attempt was made to logon, but the network logon service was not started. Are there any other things I could try? All help is more than appreciated!

• 14.04 LTS Unity no longer boots after last 94 MB update

  I am running 14.04 LTS, Unity, on an HP Pavillion 15, 4GBRAM, 750 GB hdd, I-5 machine, with AMD 8600M graphics card built in. I have disabled the dash and all Ubuntu spyware. I have been faithfully loading all updates as they appear. This morning it asked for a 94 MB update (bringing kernel to .27, I think. Now, I can boot, get to login screen, but it freezes after that. Keyboard doesn't work at that point, but mouse does. I booted into recovery mode, tried to run in generic graphics mode, -- system again froze. I also pressed [esc] during boot, but saw nothing strange; then text disappeared and was replaced by login screen. I am not a hobbyist; this is a production machine and I have a lot of work to do today. Having a standard software update render my machine completely useless... sigh. Perhaps the simplest thing to do would be to revert to the previous configuration. How do I do that? I can boot into recovery mode. But I have no idea how to proceed. TIA for all help. -Harry

• Not able to login to new AMI on EC2 - moveing from micro to small instance

  I had a t1.micro instance (old_server) on Linux on EC2 and now I need to upgrade my server to m1.small Linux (new_server). So, here is what I did: Shutdown old_server and create an AMI. Launch the new AMI with m1.small configuration. (I kept the key and security group same as old_server) I tried to login by: ssh -i my_key.pem [email protected] But, it gives a connection timeout error. My login to old_server works fine. So, my question is: What is the correct way to scale up (vertically) an EC2 instance? Where am I going wrong in the above mentioned step? When I create an AMI in step 1, is the EBS (data) also copied.

• verisign certificate into jboss server SSL

• How to reassign drive back into MediaShield (nvidia) RAID stripe

  So I managed to inadvertently remove the RAID configuration from 1 drive of a 2 drive stripe. I have both drives, unmodified, and undamaged. Specifically for MediaShield RAID, is there any way to reattach the 2nd drive back into the stripe? Current state is the stripe is displayed in Error status, and I have the other drive available, but unassigned. I strongly suspect there is no solution without purging the array completely and redefining the stripe, but I figured it was worth asking before I wipe out the data.

  I have written a shutdown script for transmission. Transmission calls the script after a torrent download finishes. • MSTSC Not working, disconnects shortly after connecting

  I'm currently having a problem connecting remotely to a server. It is a brand new build Windows 2008 R2, remote users are enabled. I'm trying to connect from a Windows 7 machine. Everytime I remotely connect to the server it will stay connected for a matter of seconds (maybe 3-5) and then disconnect and I get the standard old cannot connect and list of reasons it could be. Then I cannot connect again and get this prompt until I restart the server. As soon as it's finished restarting, it happens all over again. The network and hardware configuration between the two machines is completely reliable. Does anybody know what else I could try? Thanks.

• IPv6 tunnels - any easy way to turn them on and off?

  I've set up a tunnelbroker.net (Hurricane Electric) IPv6 tunnel from my laptop running 12.04. Works fine, and allows me to test the dual-stack configuration on my remote webservers etc. until native IPv6 is available on my ISP. However, there are times when I don't want the tunnel. For example if I'm accessing something that requires an IPv4 address in my own country rather than the Tunnelbroker tunnel endpoint, or if I'm away from the local IPv4 tunnel endpoint, or if I simply want to test without IPv6. Is there a simple way to disable and then re-enable the IPv6 tunnel, without rebooting? For context, here's what's in my /etc/network/interfaces (NNN replaces numbers): auto he-ipv6 iface he-ipv6 inet6 v4tunnel endpoint 216.218.NNN.NNN address 2001:470:NNN:NNN::2 netmask 64 up ip -6 route add default dev he-ipv6 down ip -6 route del default dev he-ipv6 Is there a network manager application (gui or command line) to selectively enable/disable parts of /etc/network/interfaces, or IPv6 in general? I found even by commenting out that out (and reloading networking) it's tough to get the IPv6 to go away. A "tunnel on/off" button in networking would be great, like using a VPN.

• How do I install and run Tomcat on port 80 as my only web server? (Rooted Ubuntu box)

  Hi All, tl;dr - I have a rooted linux box that I want to run tomcat on as a server (No Apache Web Server) how would you set this up avoiding common security pitfalls? I've written a Grails App that I want to run on a VPS I rent. The VPS has very little memory and I am using it for the sole purpose of running this application so I don't need the apache web server. This is my first venture into Server administration and I'm sure to fall into some well known traps. Should I use iptables to redirect requests from port 80 to 8080? Should I run tomcat as root or as it's own user? What configuration settings would be good for a low memory system expecting less than 10 concurrent users? Hopefully an easy one for you! Anyone who could link to a tutorial would be a personal hero destined for great things no doubt. Gav

  I use WINDOWS 7 (x64) (Russian) I want to stream life audio from my default audio capture device (microphone) When I set up VLM settings using visual enviroment instruments - VLM settings it all works fine. But when I export created settings/configuration *.vlm file and try to inport it into VLM it gives me nothing I opened that .vlm there is some text... so now I try to run VLC with default settings like this: vlc -i dshow:// --dshow-adev= :sout=#transcode{acodec=mp3,ab=128,channels=2,samplerate=44100}:std{access=http,mux=raw,dst=127.0.0.1:8084} but it dies giving me errors...=( So what shall I do to do live MP3 streaming from my default audio input device using VLC in non UI mode?

• How does one check whether the OS X "disabled" flag for launchd services is set?

  According to the man page for launchctl (emphasis mine):    -w   Overrides the Disabled key and sets it to false. In previous versions, this option would modify the configuration file. Now the state of the Disabled key is stored elsewhere on-disk. Because the current state of the disabled flag is no longer set in the .plist file itself, checking for the Disabled key is no longer an accurate way to tell if the service will run on next boot. Where is this "elsewhere on-disk"? More to the point (and more importantly), how does one check whether this flag is set? Also, is it possible to set a service to run on next boot without forcing it to start immediately (as with launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/my-service.plist)?

• Why can't I install 10.04 on a system that already has 8.04?

  Ubuntu 10.04 is beautiful. I love it. I am dying to install it on my PC, alongside the existing Ubuntu 8.04 (from which I write this message right now). But... it won't let me! When I reach the partitioning stage (manual!) Ubuntu 10.04 sees my two HDDs as one RAID volume. It doesn't see all the partitions I already have in place in /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. Even Windows 7 doesn't behave like this... (yes, I actually managed to install Windows 7 64-bit in dual-boot configuration with Ubuntu 8.04 on this same system). Note: GParted on Ubuntu 10.04 (live CD) sees the partition intended for Ubuntu 10.04 (/dev/sda4) perfectly, but is unable to format it. Note: I also removed that partition trying to reformat it via GParted once 10.04 LiveCD is loaded. It didn't help. I believe that the problem lies in Ubuntu "deciding for me" that the HDDs should be "seen" as a RAID, hence any partition is seen by GParted as "busy" or "locked". Any idea how to solve this problem?

• A simple way to redirect http://mysite.com to http://mysite.com/mylink with Apache?

  Just starting to try to get the hang of how all the directives and options work under Apache. I'd like to do a redirect with my one site (only running one site on the server) so that when a request comes in to http://mysite.com the server automatically redirects them to a sub-url of http://mysite.com/mylink. I have tried putting redirects into the file located in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled to rewrite this, but then the top level domain URL complains it isn't redirecting properly. I think what I want is a browser redirect, and thought using RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^/$ /mylink [L,R] would work, but putting it into an .htaccess file didn't work (it redirected but immediately gave a 500 internal server error.) Putting it into the file in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled gives a configuration error when trying to restart Apache. I know it's something simple...but what am I missing?

• NTP doesn't sync

  I'm using Meinberg NTP to sync the time in a VPS. The clock refuses to sync - there's a ~30s shift comparing to other servers. Meinberg NTP comes with a status script that checks hte delay\jitter every 10s and it is showing all zeros. Actions I've taken which didn't help: Restarted the NTP service using a script that comes with Meinberg NTP Added port 123 for UDP and TCP as an exception port to Windows Firewall Added Meinberk NTP executables as an exception program to Windows Firewall validated iburst appears after each server listed in the configuration file Restarted the server The OS is a Windows Server Standard SP2 32bit. What did I miss?

FormattedData: Value object the represents the formatted data to be inserted. ExcelFileService: a wrapper top the 3rd party library that generates the excel file. Now how do you determine whether a service is an infrastructure or domain service? I have the following 3 services here: ExcelReportService, ExcelDataFormatterService and ExcelFileService?
