• Getting Dell E6320 with I7 to work with 3 monitors at 1920x1080p x 3

  I want to buy Dell E6320 which comes with Intel Core I7-2620M (2.70GHz, 4MB cache, Dual Core) with Intel HD Graphics 3000. Laptop will come with docking station. I want to connect 3 monitors to that docking station so that working at home would give me some additional boost. Docking station will allow me to connect only 2 monitors so I'm looking at following other options: Matrox TRIPLEHEAD2GO DIGITAL Edition or TRIPLEHEAD2GO DP Edition. But reading Matrox Support Page intel GPU can't run the highest resolution with 3 monitors connected, it even gets worse since it seems monitors would have to be able to work at 50hz. Also I'm not sure but it seems that Matrox doesn't split the monitors as 3 separate monitors but simply as one big space (which is a bit opposite to what I need) Buy 2 or maybe just 1 USB based monitor but it would also mean having 1 or 2 different monitors then the main one, unless I buy 3 USB based monitors which would mean more money to spend. Also I found only couple of models and most of them require USB 3.0 and no other cables to plug in (nice but costly - couldn't find decent monitor with only USB for sending signal and having power connected normally) . But docking station has only one USB 3.0 port. Can I use hub and still get it to work? Find some converters from Digital to USB (I think DisplayLink does some?) Buy different laptop but what kind? I need it to be I7, small (13"), fast and lightweight. At same time it requires docking station that I can use at home to connect 3 external monitors. Some other suggested solution... Edit: I need 3 monitors for work in terms of coding in Visual Studio or having word/excel/outlook open. Nothing fancy. Maybe some movie once in a while.

• GeekTool logs "command not found" for commands that work fine in Terminal

  I'm trying to run simple commands so I can have GeekTool output date/time etc. to my desktop. Should be simple enough to do but it never actually outputs anything into the boxes. Console log shows it's getting spammed by GeekTool to say 'command not found', though the same command (e.g. date +"%H:%M") works fine in Terminal. All I want to achieve is the ability to output a clock displaying time/date on my desktop that fits into my wallpaper. I've tried changing the format of the commands, using the built-in editor window as well as the command line box on the Properties tab. I had a look at the permissions in '/' (because GeekTool runs commands from there) and nothing unusual comes up. None of these solved the issue. When I use a command that simply echo's a string it works (e.g. echo "hello" displays the word hello). Does anyone have experience with GeekTool, and understand why it won't run basic commands? As I say, it's spamming my console with 'command not found' despite them working in terminal... Running OS X 10.6.6 on a MacBook Pro (mid-2010).

• recursive grep started at / hangs

  I have used following grep search pattern on multiple platforms: grep -r -I -D skip 'string_to_match' / For example on FreeBSD 8.0, FreeBSD 6.4 and Debian 6.0(squeeze). Command does a recursive search starting from root directory, assumes that binary files do not have the 'string_to_match' and skips devices, sockets and named pipes. FreeBSD 8.0 and FreeBSD 6.4 use GNU grep version 2.5.1 and Debian 6.0 uses GNU grep version 2.6.3. On FreeBSD 6.4, last information printed to stderr was "grep: /dev/cuad0: Device busy". After this grep just idles as according to "top -m io -o total" the I/O usage of grep is nonexistent. Same behavior is true under FreeBSD 8.0, but last information sent to stderr is "grep: /tmp/.wine-0: Permission denied" on my installation. In case of Debian, last output to stderr is "grep: /proc/sysrq-trigger: Input/output error". I'm not able to use lsof or fstat under FreeBSD. PS: I know I could use find utility, but this is not the question.

• Are there any open source reseller packages?

  My department has just been given the right/responsibility to manage our own VPS. The idea being that the bureaucracy will be less for the many small web projects we run. Since each project will be managed by a different team, I was planning on approaching a shared hosting model. Are there any free pieces of software that would help automate the provision of resources each time a team request a new project? Most of the projects have identical requirements - basically LAMP - so it would be these resources that I would want provisioning (and de-provisioning, if that is a word) automatically. Ideally, there would also be a way to hook it into our LDAP authentication backend too, though I could probably make this sort of modification if necessary. Since we won't be charging our "client" however, we won't need the ability to generate invoices, handle payments, etc. etc. EDIT: Sample workflow Login authenticated against LDAP Username checked against admin group (not on central LDAP) Click 'new project' and enter project name User created on VPS with project name as username Apache virtual host created and subdomain (using project name) allocated FTP & MySQL users created

• Distortion problem with Creative audio equalizer

  Hi, I have a problem with the Creative Console EQ, I don't know if it's fixable or not (is the EQ software or hardware on these cards?). Basically, I have enormous distortion with certain sounds in the 30 - 125 hz range. When this happens I get some sort of "frrzzzz" (sorry, I'm french and don't really know the correct english word for that) on top of the original sound. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy SE. I'm using the Daniel_K drivers, on Windows 7 Profesionnal x64. All the effects are disabled except EQ. Steps to reproduce Put the card in 24bit/96khz mode. The problem is also present with 16bit/48khz but seems to be less audible. In the Creative Console, use the following EQ: (full size) Play this sound at a reasonably high volume. You should hear distortion on the two "booms". Especially the second one. Disable Creative EQ. Play the sound in an application with an integrated EQ (e.g. foobar2000, ffdshow) using the same EQ parameters. There is no distortion. Conclusion: the Creative EQ is broken. Is anyone having the same problem? I'm also interested in the results with other Creative cards or even other brands soundcards with a similar EQ feature.

• HyperV - low CPU usage

  I am very new to HyperV and virtual machine philosophy in general, so please expect more or less nooby questions :) I have a server that is only used as a host for virtual machines. OS is windows server 2008 R2 and it is running on 16 CPU and 48 GBs of RAM. On aforementioned server there are 8 VMs, each having 4 CPUs and 4 GBs of RAM. On those VMs we are running some CPU intensive tasks. Each machine has nearly 100% cpu usage. After I noticed slow performance I went to the host machine and started playing with process explorer. It turned out that cpu usage is very low. Also I/O is very low, and of course, memory consumption is high, which is expected. Of course, I don't expect that those 4 virtual cores dedicated to a VM work as fast as real, hardware 4 cores, but still I expected a higher consumption of real hardware. Is this sort of behaviour normal? I see that the most of CPU usage on host machine are marked as interrupts (which I guess is normal) and all those interrupts are passed to only one core (which is strange). Are there out of box optimization that I could perform to finally use all that processing power that is under the hood. My knowledge of virtualization technology is near to embarrassing, so I would be grateful for any links that could enlightened me :) Thanks.

• grep --color=auto with -i option disables the matching text color, why?

  I was messing around with grep and put this in my .zshenv: export GREP_OPTIONS="--color=auto" export GREP_COLORS='mt=1;34' I was bonking my head on the keyboard and changing GREP_COLORS around for a minute trying to figure out why the folder colors were working, but the matching text wasn't. I was doing this: $ grep -R -n -i -e "functionFoo\(" --include=*.cs --exclude-dir=Logs * The line number and file names were set with the default colors, but the matching text wasn't. After spending way too much time, I thought to do this: $ grep -R -n -e "functionFoo\(" --include=*.cs --exclude-dir=Logs * (I removed the -i option.) That's all it took to get the matching text to correctly show up in bold blue. This is a Cygwin on Vista setup, with rxvt running zsh. Any idea why grep colors would break on specifying a case-insensitive match? Update: Under cygwin 1.7, it's a little bit better - case insensitive search works correctly, but it only highlights the word that matches the expression exactly. In other words, "FunctionFoo" highlights "FunctionFoo" but not "functionFoo" and vice versa. Probably a grep issue so I'll be submitting it to that list.

• replacing buffalo lonkstations with FreeNAS, overall backup strategy, am I on the right path?

  We've been using 2 Buffalo LinkStations of 320Gb each for shared directory and employee's server storage (around 20 employees). So only documents (word, excel, cad drawings etc.) and database backup of the main application server (ERP, Accounting) 1 buffalo box serves as a main one, located at the server room, next to the main application server and the other buffalo box is located on the opposite side of the building (for fire protection) in a secure storage room and backs up the first one. We also have several external HDs that backs up everything from the buffalo box for an offsite backup. After 3.5 years of using these, capacity is a main limitation, I'm planning a replacement and would like to use FreeNAS (we already use monowall with great success). I would like to keep it simple and continue similar setup, building two low power boxes with 1 hd (2Tb) each. Is low power atom mobo OK? Not sure about HDs? I've read on this site somebody mentioning more seagate ES2 as more reliable and better performing. How would those eco/green drives compare. We've been pretty happy with speed of Buffalo boxes and I don't want my users to notice any slowdown. Any suggestion?

• Control copy/paste doesn't work

  I have a laptop HP PAVILION dv6-3126er with Windows 7 Home Edition installed and neither control copy nor control paste doesn't work (i've tried: ctrl+c, ctrl+v, shift+c, shift+v, ctrl + insert, shift + insert). I've tried to run a system check through cmd with sfc /scannow, it repaired something, i restarted but it didn't solve the problem. I've also tried many key combinations (like alt+ctrl+fn), but nothing works in any program. In Microsoft Word 2003 in the menu i have no key combination for copy/paste near them (in my previous comp they've been there - in brackets). Shift+Delete works by the way. I brought this laptop a few weeks ago, and i discovered this problem in the first days. I have no viruses because i have had no time to even connect him to internet. Anyways, i checked it for viruses - it is clean. I don't want to do system restore, because i see no reason to do it for a pretty clean system. I hope it is not a problem with the laptop itself. Maybe there is another reason? Maybe i need to do some more system checks? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

• Is there a good alternative to Videora iPod Converter?

  I use Videora to convert my videos (in DivX/XviD format) to something I can play on my iPod Classic. I really dislike it. It's clunky, riddled with adverts, sometimes doesn't convert properly (the infamous "invalid public atom" error - see Google for more) and has a UI that truly stinks. On the upside, it's free, accepts a list of video files (via the oddly hard to find "1-click convert" button) and just gets on with the converting as it already knows the correct settings for my iPod. One final nice touch is that once they are converted, it'll automatically upload them into iTunes. Are there any alternatives which have all the upsides but none of the downsides? Bonus points if they can set the metadata in iTunes correctly for TV shows (season, show, episode) and delete the converted file afterwards (as my iTunes settings means that a copy is made elsewhere). I've looked at a bunch of applications (handbrake, virtualdub, mediacoder, format factory, any video converter, convertxtodvd) but many of them fail the "just select a list of files and get on with converting" test - let alone all the other features I want. I have no desire to individually set the video size of each file or the codec or the post-processing options. I'm currently using the command line version of HandBrake (handbrakecli) and a hand-written DOS batch file to go through every file in a folder and convert it. It does most of what I want, just not in a very slick way. Can anyone recommend anything better? It needs to work on Windows 7 and be free.

• What is auto-mounting my media volume?

  Something is repeatedly mounting my "media" share, doing something with it, then quietly un-mounting it with no notifications at the user level. from the little I can gleaned from the console messages below, I thought I'd managed to stop it, if not understand it last night when I followed instructions for deleting all traces of the Google Update Daemon. I've not been using any Google apps whatsoever, so I was surprised to see that in Console. What's more surprising, and perhaps a little distressing, is that the same thing occurred this evening, when the Google Daemon is long gone. I don't have that log because I can't recall precisely what time it occurred. I'll do a search and provide it if you wish, though. In the meantime, any help with this would be extremely appreciated. I've asked over at Apple Discussions but I think it might be a little deeper than those manning the boards this weekend are comfortable with. It's certainly beyond my meager skills. With apologies in advance if this is more lines thank you need. • what determines the bios you can use

  I have a Compaq sr5710f with a MCP61PM-HM (Iris8) motherboard and loaded a Geforce6100sm-m bios on to it. It works fine and opened up some options, but I want to give my comp am3 socket support. So my question is if I go looking for a bios that will do that for me what do I need to pay attention to. Is it only the chip set which is geforce 6150se nforce 405 or are there more things I should be looking at. If anyone thinks they might know a bios that will help me out that would be good to. I am looking for a retail bios though. I do not want to load any of the experimental ones you can find on the net. Also I would need it to support ddr2 800 ram, and would like to keep am2 support to. I know my bios is data that is downloaded onto my motherboard, or for lack of a better word a program. I am currently running a bios that is not for my motherboard, so I know it can be done. What I need is what do I need to pay attention to when looking for compatible bios programs, that is not for my motherboard.

  I am running out of ideas. After a long period of testing this morning, I cannot seem to get this to work, and I have no idea why. I want to mount a Windows SMB/CIFS share with a Debian 5.0.4 VM, and it is not cooperating. I receive no authentication errors. I have tried mount -t smbfs and mount -t cifs, along with smbmount and such. I get the same error before. I doubt it is a problem with DNS resolution, because logging shows the correct IP address. dmesg | tail -f no longer shows authentication errors when I format the domain and username accordingly. I have played a little with iocharset=utf8, file_mode, and dir_mode as described here. That did not help either. I have also tried ntlm and ntlmv2 assuming it might be a minimum auth method problem, but not forcing sec=ntlmv2 it can still authenticate without errors anymore. smbclient -L hostname.domain.tld -W SUBADDOMAIN.ADDOMAIN.DOMAIN.TLD -U username correctly lists all the shares and shows it as the following. • Monospace font which supports at least both of Korean hangul and the Georgian alphabet?

  Being both a language enthusiast and a programmer, I find myself often doing programming or text processing involving foreign language alphabets and scripts. One annoyance however is that CJK fonts (those which support Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean) usually only contain glyphs for Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic at best. Often the Asian glyphs will be beautiful but the other glyphs can be quite ugly. Just as often in text editors you can only choose a single font, not one for CJKV and one for other, which will be each used for rendering the appropriate characters. Korean is one of the languages I'm most interested in currently. I only need hangul / hangeul for monospaced editing, hanja isn't common enough to be a problem. Another of the languages I'm currently involved in is Georgian, which has its own alphabet which is a little exotic but has pretty good support in common fonts on Windows and *nix. But I am as yet unable to find a font with good Korean glyphs and also Georgian glyphs. My editor of choice is gVim, so an answer telling me how to set it to use two fonts together would be just as good. Currently I'm using it mostly under Windows 7 so a vim-specific solution would be needed rather than a *nix-specific solution.

  I was having problems with my USB devices for an hour last night, and I am unable to determine the root cause of the problem. The two symptoms are: At seemingly random times (not consistently spaced by time or caused by any detectable event) my USB devices become "detached". Windows will play the USB disconnect sound and then the reconnect sound. The devices disconnected and then reconnected. My USB Keyboard will "stick" on one key for several seconds before processing any other keystroke made. The mouse also does not respond to clicks. I do not lose mouse movement or USB device connectivity. And after a moment of this several beeps will be emitted from the speakers. Hardware Specs: GFX Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 470 Superclocked 1280MB DDR5 PCIe Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D Premium Intel X58 Socket LGA1366 MB Processor: Intel Core i7-920 2.66Ghz 8M LGA1366 CPU Memory: Corsair Dominator 6144MB PC12800 DDR3 Storage: Hitachi 1TB Serial ATA HD 1600MHz 7200/32MB/SATA-3G Cooling: Corsair Hydro H50 CPU Liquid Cooler Case: Corsair Obsidian 800D Full Tower Case Power Supply: Corsair HX1000W 1000W Modular Power Supply Steps I have taken to narrow down the problem: Restarted the computer. - No change Changed USB port the Hub was connected to on the CPU. - No change Removed all devices from USB Hub and connected directly to CPU. - No change Used a different USB keyboard both in USB Hub and directly to CPU. - No change Disconnected and reconnected all cables. - No change Disassembled the Tower and determined if the USB headers were firmly connected. - No change Checked device manager for errors. Checked all USB devices. - Nothing flagged After an hour of frustration trying to narrow down the problem it appeared to disappear. But I am torn between it being a Mobo problem or an OS problem. Is there anything else I can do to narrow down the problem before a reformat and then eventually exchanging the Mobo?

• What is it safe to let Revo Uninstaller cleanup leftovers?

  I have been a user of Revo Uninstaller (free) for sometime and find it does a very good cleanup job with typical applications. Today I wanted to clean up my machine a bit more so I proceeded to remove Visual Studio 2005 with Revo Uninstaller. The VS installer removed the app with no issues, then Revo reported about 20,000 leftover registry keys. I am used to basically just see Arpcache and Muicache... since I am not a registry expert I had no clue about most of the 20,000 listed. So I backed up the registry then let Revo remove the 20,000. It next reported about 1500 leftover files which included my Microsoft Office applications(!) that I knew it should not be touching. So I did not delete any files with Revo. Suspecting that some of the removed keys were also Office-related, I tried to open Word and Excel, both of which knew something was up, as the installer kicked in (albeit just briefly) for each of them. At this point, since I knew there were issues, I just restored the registry and I am now (seemingly) running OK. My question, then: When is it safe to trust Revo Uninstaller? As a seasoned software professional, my own answer to this would be the obvious "When the keys it reports are something you understand and know are safe to delete" but then that makes Revo of little use except to registry experts, does it not...?

• How do I restrict the Open/Save dialog in Windows to one folder?

  I spend a significant amount of time helping non-techies use their PC's. I realized most of that time is spent trying to explain to them how the Windows folder hierarchy works, where the "open file" dialog is pointing now, and how to find that Word document they saved. All this time, they're telling me they "just want to print the file". They refuse to learn how to read the PC screen, try to memorize a fixed set of steps, and end up calling me back to tell me their files disappeared again. I realize it's not productive to try to restrict where PC apps (e.g. Quicken) store files. But if there was a Windows utility I could turn on or off that would restrict the Open/Save dialogs in Windows apps, my noob user friends and I would save an enormous amount of time. The goal would be to have all files whose locations are chosen by the Save dialog saved to one folder, and have the Open dialog always point to that folder, until the utility is turned off. Does such a Windows utility exist?

  Hello all! I´m a windows xp user (but not for much time...) and I usually see how my computer stop of responding me. The process is this: Firsly it became totally stopped or very slow for certain periods of 5 minutes. How could I do? After that it gets stopped (Even not totally because If I click on the bar I see a blinking response in the bar botton of the program I click on. It´s could be anything related with security (like the firewall or some virus)? Computer university: I usually experience this, using Matlab (R2007a) with System Generator (its respective compatible version) My personal laptop: It´s usually works well but when stopped periods became to appears I know in not much time it will became totally stopped. I usually see how Word 2007 get stopped and after a while my windows xp gets stopped. (well I can access to the the manage task pressing ctr+alt and...). The only solution I see is to kill program by program... My petition: Please, I need good references that help me how to think in order to avoid or to manage the problems previously described. Does anyone know usefull books or articles? • Setup Firefox to save .pages as .zip automatically

  What do I want to do? I would like Firefox to save files with the .pages extension as .zip files automatically. Scenario You are browsing through your emails and you notice your friend just sent you an email with a file attached (a .pages in this example). Unfortunately, you have a laptop that runs Windows. Your friend continues to send tons of emails with .pages files attached and you are tired of manually saving the files as a .zip file. Ultimately, you would like Firefox to be set up so that the download/file manager recognizes the .pages extension and automatically converts it to a .zip file. What have I done? I have saved files manually by selecting save as "All Files" and setting the extension to .zip. I've gone through Firefox and their documentation and have not found anything on how to complete this task. Why am I doing this? To save time (only a few seconds, not the main reason). I would like to setup a simple solution that "converts" a file automatically without having to recall steps on how to achieve the task manually (for clients who aren't exactly tech savvy). So that clients with Windows can access the files. IMPORTANT NOTE: I am not trying to save the web page, rather an Apple document equivalent to Microsoft Word. UPDATE: The really easy method would be to save one file, right click it, choose properties and open all .pages files up with WinRAR (or any other program that extracts files from a compressed folder). For the sake of learning, I am going to "neglect" this method and continue to do some research on Firefox add-ons. I would still like to have Firefox or the download manager to do the bulk of the work for converting the file.

• How important is dual-gigabit lan for a super user's home NAS?

  Long story short: I'm building my own home server based on Ubuntu with 4 drives in RAID 10. Its primary purpose will be NAS and backup. Would I be making a terrible mistake by building a NAS Server with a single Gigabit NIC? Long story long: I know the absolute max I can get out of a single Gigabit port is 125MB/s, and I want this NAS to be able to handle up to 6 computers accessing files simultaneously, with up to two of them streaming video. With Ubuntu NIC-bonding and the performance of RAID 10, I can theoretically double my throughput and achieve 250MB/s (ok, not really, but it would be faster). The drives have an average read throughput of 83.87MB/s according to Tom's Hardware. The unit itself will be based on the Chenbro ES34069-BK-180 case. With my current hardware choices, it'll have this motherboard with a Core i3 CPU and 8GB of RAM. Overkill, I know, but this server will be doing other things as well (like transcoding video). Unfortunately, the only Mini-ITX boards I can find with dual-gigabit and 6 SATA ports are Intel Atom-based, and I need more processing power than an Atom has to offer. I would love to find a board with 6 SATA ports and two Gigabit LAN ports that supports a Core i3 CPU. So far, my search has come up empty. Thus, my dilemma. Should I hold out for such a board, go with an Atom-based solution, or stick with my current single-gigabit configuration? I know there are consumer NAS units with just one gigabit interface (probably most of them), but I think I will demand a lot more from my server than the average home user. Any advice is appreciated. Here's the scenario: We have employees all over the world performing similar work i.e. research, generating powerpoint slides, word documents, graphics, etc. Many times a lot of this previous work can be reused for another future project. The current arrangement is email and phone calls which as you would agree is quick if you know where to look but otherwise archaic and very very inefficient. So I am looking for software that will allow me to do the following: Tag files e.g. an investor presentation on cellphone usage in kenya would be tagged investor, cellphone, kenya Manage references e.g. if we read something on the internet, should be able to paste that link in some fashion and tag it as above. Preferably cloud based so that it can be accessed by anybody and additionally would be nice (though NOT must) to have access levels (director, manager, everyone) A nice interface that non technically savvy folks can warm up to ;) A desktop app would be handy so that people don't always have to click upload or something A tree based system is inefficient in this case because content is usually linked across branches and also people might not quite agree on one format of a tree. Tagging works around this very nicely. What I have considered so far: Evernote (for its more professional look) Springpad (for its versatility with content) Mendeley (this is a research manager and in some ways ideal, but i fear its limited to PDFs) The goal is that when somebody wants to look for a document, they don't have to ask a colleague, they can just search with keywords and all relevant information shows up. • Outlook Signature Broken in Entourage

  Some of our company uses Windows with Outlook 2010, and the rest use Mac with Entourage. When our standard signature line is included in an email that goes to Entourage, the result does not display correctly. It appears that Entourage is mangling the HTML. My working theory is that Entourage encounters inline CSS styles it does not know about and stops processing styles, but I'm really not sure. Question: How can I enter a signature into Outlook 2010 that will render correctly in Entourage? For example, can I specify somehow the exact HTML to use? I want to use the "-vcodec copy" flag in the extraction command to avoid encoding a second time. This command works for my initial conversion: ffmpeg -i uploaded.mov -f mp4 -vcodec libx264 -vpre medium -acodec libfaac -r 15 -b 360k -ab 48k -ar 22050 -s 480x320 formatted.mp4 And this sometimes works for the extraction: ffmpeg -i formatted.mp4 -vcodec copy -acodec copy -ss 0 -t 30 formatted_sample.mp4 However, when I run the extraction command on some videos, the extracted sample clip starts with several seconds of blank video. The audio starts right away but the video doesn't start for 3-6 seconds. To demonstrate the problem, I've uploaded two video clips and run the above commands on them. I created the first clip in Final Cut Express and encoded it with Handbrake before uploading to the web server: 1a) uploaded clip 1b) converted with first command 1c) extracted with second command, missing first six seconds By comparison, this second clip comes from Apple's website and does not show the problem: 2a) uploaded clip 2b) converted with first command 2c) extracted with second command, no problem Can anyone see what's different about the two source clips? And if so, is there anything I can do in my conversion command so that when the extraction command runs, the clip is set up to avoid the missing video? By the way, I initially had the problem with ffmpeg 0.6.1 installed from yum, but I upgraded to the latest git version and the problem remains.

• Small store infrastructure - where to begin?

  It looks like my older brother is about to change jobs - from lawyer to shooting range proprietor - and since I'm the family 'computer guy' I have the task of coming up with and setting up the in-store equipment. Only problem, I don't know how to start or where to look. I'm a web programmer, not an IT specialist. To that end, I figured I should ask the pros. Users: 3 (myself, my brother, and his business partner) Equipment: 1 Windows (likely 7) desktop for POS software, 1 Windows desktop/laptop for backroom use (bookkeeping, etc.) Other: ?? I'm looking for a reliable and, well, idiot-proof way to handle backups. Neither my brother nor his business partner are tech savvy (A web browser, email, MS Word and Excel are about the extent of their knowledge), so I need something they can handle. On-site would be preferable to off-site, given my brother's hesitance to have sensitive business data be handled by an outside source. I'm also looking for a small on-site server. I estimate that, at most, only 2-3 users will need access. A linux solution would keep costs down, but I'm concerned about Windows <- linux interoperability. Would the store security cameras' storage be handled by the security company, or would we have to stream that data to our own server? I know from my own experience with personal security that the company gives/loans a recording device to the home owner, but I'm not sure about business security. I know this sounds like a shopping list, and it's pretty vague. I wish I could give more detail, but between my own ignorance and things not being 100% nailed down on the business end, I'm a bit stuck. At the very least I'd like a nudge - links on a place to start, what to look for, things I need to think about, etc. - for this endeavor. Thanks.
