  • Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API

    The past couple of projects I've been working on have included the use of the Google Maps API and geocoding service in websites for various reasons. I decided to tie together some of the lessons learned, build an ASP.NETstore locator demo, and write about it on 4Guys. Last week I published the first article in what I think will be a three-part series: Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps (Part 1). Part 1 walks through creating a demo where a user can type in an address and any stores within a (roughly) 15 mile area will be displayed in a grid.The article begins with a look at the database used to power the store locator (namely, a single table that contains one row for every location, with each location storing its store number, address, and, most important, latitude and longitude coordinates) and then turns to usingGoogle's geocoding service to translatea user-entered address into latitude and longitude coordinates. The latitude and longitude coordinates are used to find nearby stores, which are then displayed in a grid. Part 2 looks at enhancing the search results to include a map with markers indicating the position of each nearby store location. The Google Maps API, along with a bit of client-side script and server-side logic, make this actually pretty straightforward and easy to implement. Here's a screen shot of the improved store locator results. Part 3, which I plan on publishing next week, looks at how to enhance the map by using information windows to display address information when clicking a marker. Additionally, I'll show how to use custom icons for the markers so that instead of having the same marker for each nearby location the markers will be images numbered 1, 2, 3, and so on, which will correspond to a number assigned to each search result in the grid. The idea here is that by numbering the search results in the grid and the markers on the map visitors will quickly be able to see what marker corresponds to what search result. This article and demo has been a lot of fun to write and create, and I hope you enjoy reading it, too.   • Does ModSecurity 2.7.1 work with ASP.NET MVC 3?

    I'm trying to get ModSecurity 2.7.1 to work with an ASP.NET MVC 3 website. The installation ran without errors and looking at the event log, ModSecurity is starting up successfully. I am using the modsecurity.conf-recommended file to set the basic rules. The problem I'm having is that whenever I am POSTing some form data, it doesn't get through to the controller action (or model binder). I have SecRuleEngine set to DetectionOnly. I have SecRequestBodyAccess set to On. With these settings, the body of the POST never reaches the controller action. If I set SecRequestBodyAccess to Off it works, so it's definitely something to do with how ModSecurity forwards the body data.   • Add User to Database not working

    I'm really new to ASP.net and I am currently trying to create a registration page on a site. I was successful in adding a user to the database but I decided to add another feature into the code to check what userID's were available. For example, if a user deleted their account their userID would become available for use again. I'm trying to find the min value and the max value and add or subtract 1 depending on whether it is min or max. I can run the code I have written for this with no errors but the user is not added to the database. Can anyone help me figure out what I'm missing from my code to do this? EDIT Code adds a user to database but it adds the new user at -1 instead. I don't seem to be able to see where the issue is.   • What to do if you're burnt out?

    Hi, I'm starting to get really frustrated with ASP.NET. It seems as if much of my time is spent learning abstractions over problems, then having to kick into overdrive when those abstractions (surprise!) have unexpected behavior. It seems as if I spend so much time just fixing those issues because they usually are UI related and therefore require integration testing that I spend very little time programming any kind of meaningful logic. I don't know if it is ASP or if it is programming. I just feel as if I'm getting paid, doing the work but really wasting time. On the other hand, I have fantasies about console programs and actually using algorithms. What is wrong with me? Why can't I force myself to churn through this ASP stuff more?

  • Deploying MVC2 application to IIS7.5 - Ninject asked to provide controllers for content files

    I have an application that started life as an MVC (1.0) app in Visual Studio 2008 Sp1 with a bunch of Silverlight 3 projects as part of the site. Nothing fancy at all. Using Ninject for dependency injection (first version 2 beta, now the released version 2 with the MVC extensions). With the release of .Net 4.0, VS2010, MVC2 etc., we decided to move the application to the newest platform. The conversion wizard in VS2010 apparently took care of everything, with one exception - it didn't change references to mvc1 to now point to mvc2, so I had to do that manually. Of course, this makes me think about other MVC2 things that could be missing from my app, that would be there if I did File - New Project... But that is not the focus of this question. When I deploy this application to the IIS 7.5 server (running on Win2008 R2 x64), the application as such works. However, images, scripts and other static content doesn't seem to exist. Of course they are there on disk on the server, but they don't show up in the client web browser. I am fairly new to IIS, so the only trick I knew is to try to open the web page in a browser on the server, as that could give me more information. And here, finally, we meet our enemy. If I try to go directly to the URL of one of the images (http://server/Content/someimage.jpg for instance), I get the following error in the browser: The IControllerFactory 'Ninject.Web.Mvc.NinjectControllerFactory' did not return a controller for a controller named 'Content'. Aha. The web server tries to feed this request to MVC, who with its' default routing setup assumes Content to be a controller, and fails. How can I get it to treat Content/ and Scripts/ (among others) as non-controllers and just pass through the static content? This of course works with Cassini on my developer machine, but as soon as I deploy, this problem hits. I am using the last version of Ninject MVC 2 where the IoC tool should pass missing controllers to the base controller factory, but this has apparently not helped. I have also tried to add ignore routes for Content etc., but this apparently has no effect either. I am not even sure I am addressing the problem on the right level. Does anyone know where to look to get this app going? I have full control of the web server so I can more or less do whatever I want to it, as long as it starts working. Thanks!

    (submit said I was trying to post an image so I've changed image everywhere to ix I am trying to get jQuery to replace an ix inside a datalist. The original ix is the thumbnail ix of a product on a category page. The small ix I am clicking on are swatch ix for the different colors of a product. I can get it to work using a div tag around the ix tag inside the ItemTemplate.     Hi. I have a problem with uninstalling Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended Beta 2. I wanted to uninstall it but I cancelled the process. Then I was asked if there was a problem without uninstallation if I want to change to compatibility mode. I accidentally chose to change to compatibility mode. Since then, every time I try to uninstall it, I get an error that the installer cannot run in compatibility mode. How can I fix it? I look for installer file and it's not marked to run in compatibility mode. I cannot find the file that was marked to run in compatibility mode after answering mentioned question.     I'm trying to install UDK, but I get the error The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application. I tried re-installing .NET Framework 4 and MSVC++ Redistributable 2010 x64 with a separate uninstaller, but I still get the same error. I have had this problem both before and after reinstalling Windows 7 x64. I think it might be because UDK is 32-bit and everything else is 64-bit, but there shouldn't be any errors with backwards compatibility. How do I fix this?

    This has been driving me crazy...I have VS 2008 and am developing vb.net applications. How do I specify if I am building a debug or release version? The description I found of how to do this on the Microsoft site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/wx0123s5.aspx) don't seem to be accurate. This should be pretty straight forward shouldn't it? It seems that a friend of mine that does C# development says it is easy in his environment. Are the VS environments different between C# and VB?

    I run an Ubuntu test server, and my deployment system is also Ubuntu. I've recently been trying to get ASP.NET to work on my test server so that we can take it live. I managed to get it installed, and configured properly, and my application is installed and running, but I can't get anything to work.
