• Exploring various SharePoint blogs

  Quick summary on the activities I did yesterday - aka Day 4. Actually, it wasn't too much but I went through a number of articles on various blogs and online forums. Just for general purpose and to see whether my collection is going to have more entries. Well, so far I have to admit that the resources are good. Unfortunately, the blog of Doerfler is a little bit scarce. I went through it completely and there wasn't too much interesting information (yet) but this particular entry is worth mentioning: Wiederherstellen einer gelöschten Websitesammlung (How to restore a deleted site collection) Taking into consideration that there haven't been any new entries since November 2012 I would say that the blog is dormant. It would be great to have new entries in the future... My first (baby) steps in the following SharePoint communities are only scratching the surface, and I'm really looking forward to dig deeper. • How to change XFCE to LXDE?

  I've just installed LinuxMint XFCE, which seems to be still a bit to heavy for my hardware. Thus, I'm thinking about LXDE installation and wonder if a new Linux installation is necessary/advised in such case. The question is: how to switch easily? The additional questions are: a) is it necessary to remove the XFCE packages or both DEs may be installed at the same time? b) is there any way to simply switch between DEs (i.e. have both DEs available and boot with DE selected each time)? c) are there any performance consequences of having more than one DE installed? it means: is clean LXDE installation faster than Linux with 2 separate desktops?

• Media Player is missing from the list in "Turn Windows features on or off"

  I decided to reinstall Media Player in Vista [this way], so I figured I should turn it off as a Windows feature. But when I continue with the procedure, I get an incomplete list of features, here's an image: I looked around a bit, wondering if that is only an option available in 7, and I have seen people saying different things. So, is this only available for 7 or is there something wrong going on here? Can I make Media Player to show up in here? I am on a Toshiba Satellite A100 with Vista Home Premium OEM. I don't have my recovery disks or any restore point. Just to mention, I currently do have Media Player and it's working fine. Sorry if I can't think of any more details to add, please ask me for anything I should have included.

• How to reduce the fan noise and how to increase battery life?

  I have a brand new Sony Vaio S series laptop.(VPCSA2DGX) It came factory installed with Windows 7 professional Edition 64bit. Runs Intel core i5, 500 GB HDD , 4GB Ram. First I installed ubuntu 11.10 64 bit along side Windows to dual boot. Later,since the problem did not solve, I installed ubuntu 12.04 64bit along side Windows to dual boot. However the problem keeps annoying me. Problem: When running ubuntu 11.10/12.04, the battery lasts only about 1.5 hours. The Fan runs loud and continuously. And there is a lot of heat generated. System monitor shows less than 5% CPU used. My laptop enjoys hybrid graphic and I tried turning off ADM graphic card and keep Intel graphic card on. However I can not get the Fan noise or heat to go away and consequently the battery drain continues. BTW, in windows, the laptop gives 4-5 hours of battery power, Fan is silent and there is no heat problem. Any ideas on how to reduce the fan noise and how to increase battery life in ubuntu 11.10/12.04?

Currently I have a website with a list of audio products (essentially a search engine for audio deals). http://www.soundplaza.co.uk Once you go to the details page, you can then press the 'view deal' button to go to providers site e.g. = http://www.soundplaza.co.uk/all-deals/113/bookshelf-speakers/acoustic-energy-1 This jump between two sites is a bit harsh and I would like to show a transition page, to simply ease them into another site and not scare them off. Within this tradition page I will have a simple loading gif and some graphics showing that your transferring. QUESTION: What is the best way to send the details (link, product name etc) to this transfer page, to then wait 5 seconds, to then move on to the desired link... this can in NO WAY damage my SEO, if anything rel="nofollow" would be great if possible. Currently I have seen that you can submit form to the transition page, then you can use php sleep and then php header to transfer... however I am not sure if php header will transfer SEO value tot he provider? Any opinions would be great! Thanks

• When does the "Do One Thing" paradigm become harmful?

  For the sake of argument here's a sample function that prints contents of a given file line-by-line. Version 1: void printFile(const string & filePath) { fstream file(filePath, ios::in); string line; while (file.good()) { getline(file, line); cout << line << endl; } } I know it is recommended that functions do one thing at one level of abstraction. To me, though code above does pretty much one thing and is fairly atomic. Some books (such as Robert C. Martin's Clean Code) seem to suggest breaking the above code into separate functions. Version 2: void printLine(const string & line) { cout << line << endl; } void printLines(fstream & file) { string line; while (file.good()) { getline(file, line); printLine(line); } } void printFile(const string & filePath) { fstream file(filePath, ios::in); printLines(file); } I understand what they want to achieve (open file / read lines / print line), but isn't it a bit of overkill? The original version is simple and in some sense already does one thing - prints a file. The second version will lead to a large number of really small functions which may be far less legible than the first version. Wouldn't it be, in this case, better to have the code at one place? At which point does the "Do One Thing" paradigm become harmful?

• Dependency injection: what belongs in the constructor?

  I'm evaluating my current PHP practices in an effort to write more testable code. Generally speaking, I'm fishing for opinions on what types of actions belong in the constructor. Should I limit things to dependency injection? If I do have some data to populate, should that happen via a factory rather than as constructor arguments? (Here, I'm thinking about my User class that takes a user ID and populates user data from the database during construction, which obviously needs to change in some way.) I've heard it said that "initialization" methods are bad, but I'm sure that depends on what exactly is being done during initialization. At the risk of getting too specific, I'll also piggyback a more detailed example onto my question. For a previous project, I built a FormField class (which handled field value setting, validation, and output as HTML) and a Model class to contain these fields and do a bit of magic to ease working with fields. FormField had some prebuilt subclasses, e.g. FormText (<input type="text">) and FormSelect (<select>). Model would be subclassed so that a specific implementation (say, a Widget) had its own fields, such as a name and date of manufacture: class Widget extends Model { public function __construct( $data = null ) { $this->name = new FormField('length=20&label=Name:'); $this->manufactured = new FormDate; parent::__construct( $data ); // set above fields using incoming array } } Now, this does violate some rules that I have read, such as "avoid new in the constructor," but to my eyes this does not seem untestable. These are properties of the object, not some black box data generator reading from an external source. Unit tests would progressively build up to any test of Widget-specific functionality, so I could be confident that the underlying FormFields were working correctly during the Widget test. In theory I could provide the Model with a FieldFactory() which could supply custom field objects, but I don't believe I would gain anything from this approach. Is this a poor assumption?

• Question about mipmaps + anisotropic filtering

  I'm a bit confused here and maybe someone can explain this to me. I created a simple test texture for my terrain which is nothing more than a solid green color with a black grid overlayed on top of it. If I look at the terrain in the distance with mipmapping on and linear filtering, the grid lines become blurry fairly quickly and further back the grid is pretty much invisible. With these settings, I don't get any moire patterns at all. If I turn on anisotropic filtering, however, the higher the anisotropic level, the more the terrain looks like it did with without mipmapping. The lines are much crisper nearby but in the distance I start to see terrible moire patterns. My understanding was that mipmapping is supposed to get rid of moire patterns. I've always had anisotropic filtering on in every game I play and I've never noticed any moire patterns as a result, so I don't understand why it's happening in my game. I am using logarithmic depth however, could that be causing any problems? And if it is, how do I resolve it? After staring at various config options for 10 minutes I didn't see any way to get ConEmu to automatically copy text that I've selected to the clipboard. Console2 will do it. Is there a config option for this that I missed? I sure didn't see one but the configuration of ConEmu is a bit... jumbled. You'd think it would be on the Mark & Paste screen:

• Trouble exporting quicktime movie in Final Cut Pro

  I'm having a very strange problem exporting a sequence to quicktime in FCP6. I've never had this problem before. After the sequence is exported, the last 3 minutes play very choppy, and the last minute does not export at all! There is nothing unrendered there, and the first 10 minutes play perfectly. The only thing that is different about the last bit is that there are titles there, but the export goes wonky at least 2 minutes before that. I'm exporting using Apple Pro Res 422 HQ 1920x1080 30p, and the footage is from HMC150, shot in 1080p30. Any advice would be appreciated!

• Preventing Users From Copying Text From and Pasting It Into TextBoxes

  Many websites that support user accounts require users to enter an email address as part of the registration process. This email address is then used as the primary communication channel with the user. For instance, if the user forgets her password a new one can be generated and emailed to the address on file. But what if, when registering, a user enters an incorrect email address? Perhaps the user meant to enter [email protected], but accidentally transposed the first two letters, entering [email protected]. How can such typos be prevented? The only foolproof way to ensure that the user's entered email address is valid is to send them a validation email upon registering that includes a link that, when visited, activates their account. (This technique is discussed in detail in Examining ASP.NET's Membership, Roles, and Profile - Part 11.) The downside to using a validation email is that it adds one more step to the registration process, which will cause some people to bail out on the registration process. A simpler approach to lessening email entry errors is to have the user enter their email address twice, just like how most registration forms prompt users to enter their password twice. In fact, you may have seen registration pages that do just this. However, when I encounter such a registration page I usually avoid entering the email address twice, but instead enter it once and then copy and paste it from the first textbox into the second. This behavior circumvents the purpose of the two textboxes - any typo entered into the first textbox will be copied into the second. Using a bit of JavaScript it is possible to prevent most users from copying text from one textbox and pasting it into another, thereby requiring the user to type their email address into both textboxes. • Is there a process-oriented IDE ?

  My problem is simple : when I'm programming in an OO paradigm, I'm often having part of a main business process divided in many classes. Which means, if I want to examine the whole functional chain that leads to the output, for debugging or for optimization research, it can be a bit painful. So I was wondering : is there an IDE that let you put a "process tag" on functions coming from different objects, and give you a view of all those functions having the same tag ? edit : To give an example (that I'm making up completely, sorry if it doesn't sound very realistic). Let's say we have the following business process for a HR application : receive a holiday-request by an employee, check the validity of the request, then give an alert to his boss ("one of those lazy programmer wants another day off"); at the same time, let's say the boss will want to have a table of all employee's timetable during the time the employee wants his vacations; then handle the answer of the boss, send a nice little mail to the employee ("No way, lazy bones"). Even if we get rid of everything not purely business-related (mail sending process, db handling to get the useful info, GUI functionalities, and so on), we still have something that doesn't really fit in "one class". I'd like to have an IDE that would give me the opportunity to embrace quickly, at the very least : The function handling the validation of the request by the employee; The function preparing the "timetable" for the boss; The function handling the validation of the request by the boss; I wouldn't put all those functions in the same class (but perhaps that's my mistake ?). This is where my dreamed IDE could be helpful.

• Interpreting Others' Source Code

  Note: I am aware of this question. This question is a bit more specific and in-depth, however, focusing on reading the actual code rather than debugging it or asking the author. As a student in an introductory-level computer science class, my friends occasionally ask me to help them with their assignments. Programming is something I'm very proud of, so I'm always happy to oblige. However, I usually have difficulty interpreting their source code. Sometimes this is due to a strange or inconsistent style, sometimes it's due to strange design requirements specified in the assignment, and sometimes it's just due to my stupidity. In any case, I end up looking like an idiot staring at the screen for several minutes saying "Uh..." I usually check for the common errors first - missing semicolons or parentheses, using commas instead of extractor operators, etc. The trouble comes when that fails. I often can't step through with a debugger because it's a syntax error, and I often can't ask the author because he/she him/herself doesn't understand the design decisions. How do you typically read the source code of others? Do you read through the code from top-down, or do you follow each function as it's called? How do you know when to say "It's time to refactor?"

• taskbar-free window manager

  I'm looking for a window manager that is not based on the "standard" taskbar (which I find a poor idea and I'm completely tired of). I'm aware of tiling window managers and improvements in last versions of operating systems, but I can't find what I need. I suppose that any window takes the whole screen (or can be tiled), and I imagine switching between windows like that: on a hotkey or mouse hot zone the screen becomes a task switcher where tasks are organized in a somewhat convenient manner. Well, it's a bit like a taskbar with autohide, but I think there could be some more convenient ideas than simply stacking icons and descriptions... It is also supposed to be lightweight enough, for example to run on a netbook. Any suggestions?

• Visual Studio 2010 Modeling and Architecture Tools

  Jennifer Marsman (Microsoft Evangelist) and Cameron Skinner (Microsoft Visual Studio Product Unit Manager) recently stopped by our office while they were passing through Louisville on their tour to give us a presentation on the new Visual Studio 2010 Modeling and Architecture Tools. I checked out these new features when Visual Studio 2010 Beta versions originally rolled out and have been really impressed with this stuff ever since then. So it was pretty cool to actually learn some new techniques from Cameron himself since he helped write the actual code behind some of those features. If you've upgraded to Visual Studio 2010 recently I would highly recommend using the Architecture tools. They're awesome. If you want to make improvements to it, they even have their own SDK for it. There are plenty of blogs out there to show you how to use it. I've been waiting to find a tool that works like this where I can really analyze the code in solutions and projects and see how everything ties together. It's really handy if you're asked to work on a new project and aren't familiar with how it works. Just run the tools, analyze the DLL's, learn how everything works, and then you'll be ready to implement new code! It's a great tool to learn new systems quick and easy and it's all housed within the Visual Studio IDE. I just wanted to write a blog to brag about it a little bit, so I figured I'd throw this up here. It's a must have tool for Developers/Architects.   When Netcat integrated into OpenSolaris it was already clear that there will be couple of enhancements needed. The biggest set of the changes made after Solaris 11 Express was released brings various I/O enhancements to netcat shipped with Solaris 11. Also, since Solaris 11, the netcat package is installed by default in all distribution forms (live CD, text install, ...). Now, let's take a look at the new functionality: /usr/bin/netcat alternative program name (symlink) -b bufsize I/O buffer size -E use exclusive bind for the listening socket -e program program to execute -F no network close upon EOF on stdin -i timeout extension of timeout specification -L timeout linger on close timeout -l -p port addr previously not allowed usage -m byte_count Quit after receiving byte_count bytes -N file pattern for UDP scanning -I bufsize size of input socket buffer -O bufsize size of output socket buffer -R redir_spec port redirection addr/port[/{tcp,udp}] syntax of redir_spec -Z bypass zone boundaries -q timeout timeout after EOF on stdin Obviously, the Swiss army knife of networking tools just got a bit thicker. While by themselves the options are pretty self explanatory, their combination together with other options, context of use or boundary values of option arguments make it possible to construct small but powerful tools. For example: the port redirector allows to convert TCP stream to UDP datagrams. the buffer size specification makes it possible to send one byte TCP segments or to produce IP fragments easily. the socket linger option can be used to produce TCP RST segments by setting the timeout to 0 execute option makes it possible to simulate TCP/UDP servers or clients with shell/python/Perl/whatever script etc. If you find some other helpful ways use please share via comments. • Windows 7 has trouble installing software with Visual C++ 2005 & 2008

  I have been reinstalling windows 7 over and over again on an ASUS P5lD2 2Gb Ram 3Ghz P4 because it ultimately looses the contents of "Turn Windows Features On or Off" after I install software like Autocad 2010 & Microsoft Office 2007. I get install errors like 1935 and 1704 on the way tried different fixes at different times (install software in different order to try and isolate problem too). Ultimately I force the software to install after much buggering and end up loosing the contents of "TWFOOO" Should I be installing some older items like .net framework 1.1, 2.0 and visual studio items like vcredist_x86.exe? getting a bit lost because of compounded problems...

Is that possible? Or that a very wrong way of doing that? Perhaps we better set up own local dns server and point to it our router? Though own dns server a bit concerns me because of might be some network interruption and others lags, if you know what I mean. Or perhaps there are another workflows for that? What's the best way for such things? So I'll be so grateful to hear some advices from experienced admins. I couldn't find that info on internet, so if you know where to read about it, point me in a right direction. Thank you in advance Alex

• Trying to use OpenGL in Java on Netbeans but getting an error. Please help [migrated]

  I am on a Mac running Netbeans 6.9. I downloaded and installed LWJGL using this tutorial down to the letter: http://lwjgl.org/wiki/index.php?title=Setting_Up_LWJGL_with_NetBeans I finished the installation and copied sample code to see if my system is working. I got a bug, and was not sure if it was because of faulty code or i was doing something wrong. • Too many connectons to 212.192.255.240

  Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing. Any suggestions are highly apprecitated.
