  I have a table that looks like this: person trip_id date home destination joe 1 3/10 chicago new york joe 2 4/10 chicago l.a. joe 3 5/10 chicago boston luther 4 3/12 new york chicago luther 5 3/18 new york boston I want to get a result like person trips firstDate home joe 3 3/10 chicago luther 2 3/12 new york Currently I've got Select person, count(trip_id) as trips, min(date) as firstDate from [table] group by person order by firstDate I can't figure out how to get home in there as well. Home is always unique to the person. But my DBMS doesn't know that. Is there an easy way around this problem? Appreciate it.

• How to indicate to user that a command affects a subset of a multiple selection?

  Here is an example that illustrates my question. I have a program that lists 1000 items. I select 10 of 1000 items. The program enables a button indicating that a command is available for my selection. I click the button, and a window appears. I make some change in the window and click OK. The command changes 5 of the 10 items in my multiple selection, and those 5 changed items now reflect a modified state in my list. My question is: How do I indicate to user that the command affects a subset of a multiple selection before clicking OK? Can anyone cite examples of existing products that handle this scenario well?

• Trying to create fields based on a case statement

  I'm having some trouble with the query below. I am trying to determine if the "category" field is A, B or C and then creating a field based on the category. That field would sum up payments field. But I'm running into error saying "incorrect syntax near keyword As". I am creating this in a SQL View. • Rails 3 date_select for year only

  I have a form in my Rails 3 app where I want to create a select tag for just the year on a method :grad_year. I have everything working - and storing - properly using date_select and adding :discard_month and :discard_day. However when I render @profile.grad_year I get the month and day values. So I'm wondering how to store and render only the year for @profile.grad_year? • Possible to exclude or reorder a column from `*` ?

  Is it possible to exclude a column from a select * from table statement with SQL Server? I have a need for this and this is my only option other than parsing a raw SQL string to get out the required field names (I really don't want to do that). Just to be bold. When the query is made I do not have access to the list of fields needed from the table but I do know which field I do not need. This is part of a complex multi-part query. Surely there must be some way even if it's "hackish" such as using table variables or views My other option is to reorder the columns. My problem is with ExecuteScalar SQL functions which get the first row and first column.

• Weird vps server issue

  I have an unmanaged linux vps Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot). I have LNMP installed. Also php-fpm php-apc, varnish, memcache. I have (or rather had) several live sites on it. under normal load the server uses ~700 mb memory. But since last night its using only 20mb~ memory and a lot of the services seems to be down (according to htop) I only see nginx working and mysql starts up and goes does every few minutes on a loop. • Migrating users and mailboxes from postfix / Maildir to Postfix with Mysql backend

  So I've got 60 or so users on a hand rolled postfix installation on openbsd and I'd like to move their mailboxes to our new mail server running iRedMail (postfix, vmail/mysql back end) Does anyone know of a good way to do this? Preferably a script I can run to keep syncing the users mailboxes as MX records get updated? I presume one way (though I don't have all their passwords!) would be to have a command line imap client that simulated the users copying their mail themselves but I'm sure there must be a shell / php script to migrate users? Anyone got any bright ideas? Chris.

  Hi, My server details: OS: Windows Server 2003 IIS6 Plesk 8.xx installed (currently using Plesk to set the cronjob) I need your advice. I have 2 methods: Method 1: Using php + mysqldump, create databases backup files into gzip, and then send email with attachment (each databases has around about 25mb) Method 2: Using batch + mysqldump, create databases backup files into gzip, and then send email with attachment (same, each databases has around about 25mb) My questions: Whats the difference of using php file and batch file for cronjob? Which method is better in term of backup speed and send email, and (maybe)safety (e.g., lesser file corrupt occurance)? If i set the cronjob hourly, will it effect my web performances? I mean, lets say my website has 100++ users online now, and each user making transaction to MySQL, when I perform backup at my web peak hour, will it decrease the performances, like the loading speed, prone to errors etc?? I am trying to configure ROR to use apache and mysql so that I do not have to install additional servers to run ruby on rails. I also tried InstantRails but faced same problems. I went through the tutorial mentioned in getting rails to wrok on a windows machine running xampp and did all the steps which were necessary. All went fine (installing rails, running the ruby, gem and rails command from command prompt) but when I tried to run my application by typing localhost:3000/say/hello nothing happened and I was redirected to the google page for searching to this keyword.   Hi I have a working courier-imap server on my Debian Etch private server ; users are virtual, authentificatin goes through mysql. It's been working good for years. I would like to share an imap folder between 2 users. I thought I would just have to do something like this : cd path/to/mailusers/dir ln -s path/to/user1/maildir/.folder_to_be_synched path/to/user2/maildir/ After I entered the command, I found that user2 saw a new folder in its imap client, but the folder appeared empty. It is not a permission problem because all the virtual users have the same permissions on the file system. Any idea what I could do ? thanks

  I developed a intranet applications with Rails (3.2) for one of my customers. There will be around 30-40 employees working with it. Backend is MySQL (5). What would be the best way to determine the servers specs needed? Given: max. load will be roughly 2400 (40*60) HTTP requests (mixed GET / POST) per hour. 15% of these calls are JSON calls (iOS) avg request will make between 5-10 database calls 500-800 SQL INSERTS per day webpages are fairly simple (no images, just text) avg webpage is 15 request (css/js/etc) and total size is 35-45 KB More specific, since they need access from multiple geographical locations, we are thinking of running a bitnami Ruby stack in the AWS cloud (uptime is important). Any thoughts on a AWS Instance (small/medium) and Utilization (light/medium/heavy) ? Thanks!

  I am following this tutorial: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SnortIDS I've set up the database, everything has installed correctly, and I've configured the snort.conf file so it outputs to a database (with creds all filled out ok). When I run /etc/init.d/snort start, it fails but does not produce any error message other than [fail]. The last few lines of /var/log/syslog are: snort[5687]: database: must enter database name in configuration file#012 snort[5687]: FATAL ERROR: My output database line in the snort.conf file is: output database: log, mysql, user=snort password=... dbname=snort host=localhost I have tried it with the commas separating everything, putting quotes around stuff, etc. The password is only made up of letters (after I thought maybe a number was throwing it off).

• Whats the best way to deal with backups for my php/mysql application

  I'm creating php application for my client and now thinking what would be the best way to do backups, automatically if possible? I don't have much experience in this area and in case something goes wrong, or if I need to migrate, I would like to have fast way of getting it all back online. I understand "something goes wrong" is a very wide term, but lets say that someone hacks my site and wipes out database and all the files. My app. is written in php/mysql and I got access to cpanel (hosted with justhost.com if that makes any difference :). I used Joomla and it has JoomlaPack that does complete backup almost automatically and in case site fails, its easy to revert, or migrate if necessary. Is there anything like that for my configuration that would make reverting/migration, easy?

  Im looking for an FTP server solution, that we can host either internally on a dedicated server, or on Rackspace Cloud/AWS, that provides a HTTP POST notification when a file is uploaded, and allows user accounts to be created either through an API or MySQL database. There are several offerings that provide email notification - but has anyone come across anything that matches the above requirements. BrickFTP being a IaaS system is an option, but we would prefer something hosted in house. I don't believe the standard FTP servers provided with Apache can do the above ... can they?

• Using Zend_Db and multiple tables

  I have a normalized database that stores locations of files on the internet. A file may have multiple locations spread across different sites. I am storing the urls in two parts (Site.UrlStart, FileLocation.UrlEnd). The UrlEnd is the part unique to that file (for the site). Simplified Db structure: I am using Zend_Db as my ORM (If it is that), with classes for the tables inheriting from Zend_Db_Table_Abstract. The issue is that retrieving the location data (e.g. the url) requires the use of multiple tables and as far as I can make out and I would either have to use both table classes (thereby exposing my table structure) or scatter sql all over my application, neither of which sound appealing. The only solution I can see is to create a façade that acts like Zend_Db_Table_Abstract (Maybe inherits from it?) and hides the fact that the data is actually on two tables. My questions are as follows: Am I going in the right direction in creating a façade class (Are there other alternatives)? Should the facade class inherit from Zend_Db_Table_Abstract?
