    I am working on an enterprise project. Some of the team has an Oracle background and some has a Microsoft SQL Server background. There is much confusion when we talk about schemas. I am trying to provide some clarity. Is this an accurate way to describe the difference in the meaning of schemas between the two technologies? An Oracle schema is associated with a single user and consists of the objects owned by the user. A MS SQL Server schema schema is a namespace.

    Hello. I create new desktop with CreateDesktop and want to get it's DC & RC. RECT deskRC; HDC deskDC; HDESK hNewDesktop = CreateDesktop(...); GetWindowRect(hNewDesktop, &deskRC); deskDC = GetDC(hNewDesktop); This returns only 0's. What's the problem? Or maybe there's another way of obtaining those values. P.S.: Desktop creates normally.

    I am trying to access information from an Oracle meta-data table from within a function. For example (purposefully simplified): CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE MyProcedure IS users_datafile_path VARCHAR2(100); BEGIN SELECT file_name INTO users_datafile_path FROM dba_data_files WHERE tablespace_name='USERS' AND rownum=1; END MyProcedure; / When I try to execute this command in an sqlplus process, I get the following errors: LINE/COL ERROR -------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- 5/5 PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored 6/12 PL/SQL: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist I know the user has access to the table, because when I execute the following command from the same sqlplus process, it displays the expected information: SELECT file_name FROM dba_data_files WHERE tablespace_name='USERS' AND rownum=1; Which results in: FILE_NAME -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- /usr/lib/oracle/xe/oradata/XE/users.dbf Is there something I need to do differently?

  • How to log the raw SQL from Oracle occi C++ api?

    One of our customers is complaining our application is not working. Their reasoning is that our sql function call to their Oracle database is not getting the "expected" result. Sometime, it should failed but our application get success from their database. It's really frustrating because it's their database and we cannot do any test on it. We are using the C++ Oracle OCCI API. Is there anyway we can log the raw sql from our end? That will be very helpful and we can ship the script to them and let them debug in their system to figure out the problem. Thanks in advance.

    Youtube video does not show up in a modal window when viewed in a desktop version of Chrome. The modal window pops up but the youtube video does not. https://animalhealth.pfizer.com/sites/pahweb/US/EN/Products/Pages/ClarifideStories.aspx It works in IE and Firefox on Windows7, works in Chrome on Android ICS and iOS6 iPad. It is on a sharepoint site but if I open a version saved to my desktop it works fine in chrome.   • BI and EPM Landscape

    Most of my blog entries are not about Oracle products, and most of the latest entries are about topics such as IT strategy and enterprise architecture. However, given my background at Gartner, and at Hyperion, I still keep a close eye on what's happening in BI and EPM. One important reason is that I believe there is significant competitive value for organizations getting BI and EPM right. Davenport and Harris wrote a great book called "Competing on Analytics", in which they explain this in a very engaging and convincing way. At Oracle we have defined the concept of "management excellence" that outlines what organizations have to do to keep or create a competitive edge. It's not only in the business processes, but also in the management processes. Recently, Gartner published its 2009 market shares report for BI, Analytics, and Performance Management. Gartner identifies the same three segments that Oracle does: (1) CPM Suites (Oracle refers not to Corporate Performance Management, but Enterprise Performance Management), (2) BI Platform, and (3) Analytic Applications & Performance Management. According to Gartner, Oracle's share is increasing with revenue growing by more than 5%. Oracle currently holds the #2 market share position in the overall BI Software space based on total BI software revenue. It has for instance a very large "Other Vendors" category. The largest player traditionally is SAS. Analytic Applications are often meant for very specific analytic needs in very specific industry sectors. According to Gartner, from the large vendors, again Oracle is the one who is gaining the most share - with total BI software revenue growth close to 15% in 2009. In fact, integration actually is the innovation. BI and EPM have been silo technology platforms and application suites way too long. Management and measuring performance should be very closely linked to strategy execution, which is the domain of other business application areas such as CRM, ERP, and Supply Chain. BI and EPM are not about "making better decisions" anymore, but are part of a tangible action framework. Furthermore, organizations are getting more serious about ecosystem thinking. They do not evaluate single tools anymore for different application areas, but buy into a complete ecosystem of hardware, software and services. The best ecosystem is the one that offers the most options, in environments where the uncertainty is high and investments are hard to reverse. The key to successfully managing such an environment is middleware, and BI and EPM become increasingly middleware intensive. In fact, given the horizontal nature of BI and EPM, sitting on top of all business functions and applications, you could call them "upperware". Many are active in the BI and EPM space. Big players can offer a lot, but there are always many areas that are covered by specialty vendors. Oracle openly embraces those technologies within the ecosystem as well.   • Partitioning recommendations for a Proxmox VM Server (OpenVZ)

    We are new to virtualization and we are planning to turn our online server into a virualized one, mainly for maintenance, backup and recovery improvements. Initially we would only have one real virtual system with load plus 1-3 copys for testing and recovering and maybe a small centralized syslog virtual machine. We would like, if possible the host machine to include an iptables plus rsync to back up to other machines and some other global security systems. Due to this and the offerings of our hosting supplier we are mainly considering Proxmox for its simplicity (we like the idea of its web admin panel) and as I also understand that the container approach of OpenVMZ systems may fit well resource wise with our setup. The base system comes with debian so we can personalise it to our requirements. Proxmox installations default installs an LVM partition for the VMs. Our doubts are with the fact of what would be the best partition structure for this considering that: we would like to have a mirror of the root partition we could boot from if required (our provider supports booting the system from another partition via control panel) we ideally would like to have a partition that could be shared among the VM systems. We still don't know if this is possible directly with OpenVMZ containers, otherwise we are considering doing this by sharing it via NFS on the host machine. we want to use the backup system available on the proxmox host administrator to programme VMs backups and then rsync it to another machine. With this based on a Linux Raid of aprox (750Gb) we are considering something like: ext3_1/ - (20Gb) ext3_2/bak_root - (20Gb) mostly unmounted, root partition sync LVM_1 /var/lib/vz - (390Gb) partition for virtual images LVM_2 /shared_data - (30Gb) LVM_3 /backups - (300Gb) where all backups would be allocated Our initial tests with Proxmox seem to have issues with snapshots backups like this, perhaps caused by the fact that they can not be done to another LVM partition (error: command 'lvcreate --size 1024M --snapshot --name vzsnap-ns204084.XXX.net-0 /dev/pve/LV' failed with exit code 5) in which case we might have to use a standart ext3 partition (but unsure if we can do this with the 4 primary partition limitations). Does this makes more or less sense? Would it be mad to for example write VMs /var/logs to a NFS mounted partition (on the host system)? Are their any other easier ways to mount host system partitions (or folders) to the VMs?

  • Unknown and strange RDP successful logins in EventViewer

    I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 with a valid IP, and recently I've found hundreds of unknown and strange RDP successful logins logged in EventViewer. Here are some details: They are not similar to normal logins, they happen like every second in a while even when I myself am logged in to the server. Event reads "Remote Desktop Services: User authentication succeeded" in "Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager/Operational", Event ID 1149 They seem to use some random user accounts without a domain name. I'm pretty sure that I don't have those local user accounts, and the server doesn't belong to any domain. Legitimate RDP logins have a valid user account and workgroup name, but those logins use unknown user names without any workgroup. Support staff couldn't help me and I'm very curious what are these strange logins. Are they some sort of brute force attack? so why does it read "Successful"? Am I being hacked? Why do they keep happening continually?

  • Nagios Terminal Services check?

    Most of our servers are licensed for 2 concurrent remote desktop sessions. This is fine, so long as everyone does their administrative task and logs off, but some people accidentally close sessions (disconnect but remain logged in) instead. I know that you can force someone off with the right Admin tools, but it's a bit ugly and may hurt productivity or maybe even the server(?). I was thinking that a nightly Nagios check of remote sessions available nagging people would help enforce build discipline on the subject. Can anyone recommend a service check that can monitor terminal service availability?

  • How to set _optimizer_search_limit and _optimizer_max_permutations in Oracle10g.

    I am working on a product that must support both MSSQL and Oracle (10g and 11g). I have some very complex queries that seem to run without issue on MSSQL 2005/2008, but very, very slow with Oracle. The CPU on the oracle server skyrockets for long periods of time, and it seems like the optimizer may be trying to find the best execution plan for the very complex query. I did some Googling to figure out how to limit the amount of time the optimizer spends on this, and came up with _optimizer_search_limit and _optimizer_max_permutations. Both of these parameters are hidden in Oracle 10g, and setting them in init.ora doesn't seem to make any difference. How do I set these parameters in Oracle. Or am I just totally barking up the wrong tree with the assumption that the optimizer is spending several minutes finding an execution plan? Thanks.

  • Inexpensive Remote Assistance software?

    Any recommendations for Remote Assistance software that does not require firewall modification for clients? To assist client with software problems and perform training, we currently use a tool called Remote Helpdesk to connect to their computers and guide them through the process. This tool was pretty cheap (~$400 onetime for 3 support staff), and worked great - the client's PC actually initiates the connection to us, so there's never any firewall issues (vs. Remote Desktop, VNC software, or many other similar tools). Unfortunately, the product doesn't work well with 64-bit O/S's and Vista in general (slows down by a factor of 10 or so). I am looking for alternatives that provide the same reverse connection capabilities to avoid firewall issues. The only solution I've found is WebEx's Remote Support, which is WAY too expensive ($449/month for us). Thanks for all the assistance!

  • Win7-Server2008 RDP connection hangs on "Securing Remote Connection" for 20-30 seconds

    I have a problem that googling has turned up nothing, except this question on experts exchange which I borrowed most of the text from. :) When I connect via Remote Desktop to a new Windows 2008 R2 server it takes 20-30s to get past the "Securing Remote Connection" message during the login. If the password is wrong, it does this every time you attempt a login (ie its not a one time thing). However, after a successful login attempt the following logins to the same server goes faster. Most servers runs on VMware here, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

  • Accessing apache in ubuntu 10 virtualbox guest from ubuntu 10 host

    I did the following: installed VirtualBox 3.1.6 OSE in ubuntu 10 desktop. installed ubuntu 10 server on a virtual machine in VirtualBox. select "LAMP server" and "OpenSSH server" options during the ubuntu server installation. leave network "adapter 1" of virtual machine as "NAT". use "VBoxManage" described in manual to setup port forwarding on the host (Protocol: TCP, GuestPort: 80, HostPort: 8080). verify "ExtraDataItem" have been added to "ubuntuServer1.xml" (my virtual machine name) correctly. run command "pgrep apache" in ubuntu server in virtual machine to ensure apache is running. Everything went well. But, when I try to access the apache from the browser on the host with "http://localhost:8080/", it just continue fetching with no response. Now, I'm struck! Please help! Many many thanks in advance!

    We're deploying thin clients connecting to a terminal server farm. The computers have high visibility to the public and I would like them to at least look presentable and not like something out of 1995. So I installed the Desktop Experience feature and enabled the Theme service. The server will not support Aero because it has no 3D graphics, but we can enable the Windows 7 Basic theme, which has the Aero look without the 3D effects. The problem with that theme is that you can select any window color you want, as long as it's baby boy blue. Is there a way to make those windows another color? The window color controls do nothing.

    Installation: Windows Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Service role When I logon locally my command window (cmd.exe) displays with default font that is 8x12. But when I logon remotely and open command window, it opens with the smallest possible font selection. Opening window properties and setting font size, the default 8x12 font is missing from the list. What should I do to get this font back in the list? Following screenshots show settings when logged on locally and remotely.   • What VNC (or similar) software for Windows 7 Home allows me to control my parents’ computer remotely as an administrator user?

    Here’s what I dream of: I install Windows 7 Home on my parents’ PC. They have a regular user account that they use, meaning they can’t install anything. I have an administrator account, meaning I can install things for them. I install some sort of VNC software on their machine that lets me access their computer remotely under the administrator account, so that I can install software for them (or do other administrator tasks, e.g. updates) without actually going to their house. Is there any VNC or VNC-like software that supports the above? (I guess I might be better off buying them Windows 7 Professional, and using Remote Desktop. At some point I’ll give up and get them an iPad, but for now, remote Windows admin is the dream.)
