• Linux Programmer moving to Windows

  I am a fairly proficient Linux programmer. I have been coding in Linux for 4 years, for both personal reasons and for profit. During those 4 years I have not even owned a computer running the Windows operating system. I am looking to expand my horizons into Windows programming, but am finding myself overwhelmed with the lack of what I perceive to be standardization. I feel as though different compilers follow different conventions, and all of the worthwhile IDEs cost money. Whats worse is that so many of the Tutorials are just terrible. If anyone else has taken the switch from Linux to Windows programming, what was the most helpful. What are the most straightforward IDEs and tutorials for using the API. I am looking to do mainly C and C++ development, along with some x86. I have found MASM primarily suits my needs for the latter.

• How to quantify product work in Resume?

  One of things I do in my Resume is try to quantify the impact my work has had in the particular company I was with at the time. The reason is it shows the value my work had added to the business. Is this what you guys do as well or am I the only one? In my previous job this was easy as I worked on short/medium internal applications and it was fairly easy to measure end result. For example, external consulting company quoted $50,000 for an application Business Services department wanted I completed it in 3 days so I say I saved the company $48,000. I have been in my current job for 3 years but all of it has been on 1 single well established product. About 30% work is maintenance and 70% work is on new modules. I have worked on various modules like API (WCF), Security (2 factor authentication), etc. How should I quantify work on modules? Many thanks.

  Alot of people say it is very hard to get a job at Google/Microsoft. Due to insufficient number of jobs, there is very tough competition for fresh graduates to get a job at the worthy company. I have read certain articles which encourage fresh graduates to have good projects (Programming projects), Focus on Accomplishments or have a good reputation on websites like this one. So my question is what kind of programming projects & accomplishments help in getting job at Google/Microsoft. There are alot of other factors like communication skills & leadership etc but this is not the main concern here. Regards

  I'm thinking of continuing my education and going for masters degree. I must decide between two programs. One is CS/IT and focuses on algorithms, math, multimedia, web technologies with optional interesting courses like AI and robotics. Second is about business process management, software architecture and project management. I have some experience in business software and I must say, I never though I need deeper understating of algorithms or program language but I always felt that I'm lacking in project planing or management knowledge. On the other side, CS/IT looks more interesting but what are the chances to find a job that require such skills?

• Are code screening services worthwhile?

  I've seen websites that screen programmers by their ability to write code. It's a service that you enter a programming question into and then send out a link. Job candidates program their solution to the question as they are timed and recorded. The person who posted the question can then playback a video of their candidate programming the script. This video allows them to see how quickly and neatly their job candidate can code. Are these types of services worth it? What caveats and hangups are there to using such things to screen potential hires?

• Blocked Sites at work (that aren't even bad)

  So here recently, i've been using google to look up information for basically random programming things (i was just hired on a month or so ago). So here recently I was actually looking up some information about RAW_SOCKETS (but thats beside the point) Anyways some of the tutorials sites/explaining how to use them and explaining the protocol sites are actually blocked. (and our manager sent out an email saying that if u run into a site just to email her just in case). Now obviously...w/e sys admins probably see these 'blocked' sites in their reports. But should I be worried? I mean....I literally am not trying to be devious Im just trying to learn stuff. I guess programming websites are sometimes labeled as "hacking". sometimes blogs get labeled like that, but alot of the time blogs have USEFUL information. This apparently happens alot of my other co-workers and they don't even bother emailing our manager.....but should I be worried? Or has this happened to you guys before?

  Most of programming languages (Server-side languages for web development) needs a learning curve and requires some time to learn. However, I'm sure there is a difference between them. So, for example you can master the 'X' language in less time than the 'Y' language. I'm a beginner in web development, meaning that I just know HTML and CSS and now want to choose the right tool for building dynamic sites. What I'm looking for is a language that is easy to master in less time than other languages. So, is there a language that can suit my needs? If so, please let me know about what should I learn in it? (for example, which frameworks?, libraries?, IDEs?, databases?, etc). In the end, I don't want to regret my choice of the language and want to learn solid basics in it and in programming in general.

  Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s.   Since my son started going to school, I've been noticing a very serious lack of organizations to encourage kids to program or at least letting them know how to get involved in programming. Are there any groups that you know of to help kids out this area?? And I'm not referring to tools to help kids learn, I'm referring to groups that will help in getting kids interested in programming. Whats the difference between a Software Architect, a Software Engineer, and a Software Developer (Programmer)? What is the actual difference between Computer Programmers and Software Engineers? Is this description accurate? What's the difference between computer science and programming? I want to know the difference between a programmer, a software engineer and a computer scientist. I'm new to the scene and I don't want to step on anybody's toes. I once gloated to a programmer that I was learning MS Access. Boy, was that a mistake. But when my father in law contracted some of his work out to software engineers their code was junk. In the world of software development, who goes by what title? Does it matter?
