• Did I lose my RAID again?

  Hi! A little history: 2 years ago I was really excited to find out that mdadm is so powerful that it even can reshape arrays, so you can start with a smaller array and then grow it as you need. I've bought 3x1Tb drives and made a RAID-5. It was fine for a year. Then I bought 2x more, and tried to reshape to RAID-6 out of 5 drives, and due to some mess with superblock versions, lost all content. Had to rebuild it from scratch, but 2Tb of data were gone. Yesterday I bought 2 more drives, and this time I had everything: properly built array, UPS. I've disabled write intent map, added 2 new drives as spares and run a command to grow array to 7-disks. It started working, but speed was ridiculously slow, ~100kb/sec. After processing first 37Mb at such an amazing speed, one of old HDDs fails. I properly shutdown the PC and disconnected the failed drive. After bootup it appeared that it recreated the intent map as it was still in mdadm config, so I removed it from config and rebooted again. Now all I see is that all mdadm processes deadlock, and don't do anything. Did I lose my data again? Any suggestions on how can I make this work? OS is Ubuntu Server 10.04.2. PS. Needless to say, the data is inaccessible - I cannot mount /dev/md0 to save the most valuable data. You can see my disappointment - the very specific thing I was excited about failed twice taking 5Tb of my data with it.   Actually my XML file has SVG info, and my Project lead wants me to develop an XSLT for the XMl file to convert it in to a PDF file. But when I try to do so I am failing to convert the XML file to PDF, can anyone help me out in this....... • Windows 7 & Photoshop CS5.1 - "Fonts missing" issue - I have the font!! (sort of)

  I've noticed a really aggravating issue with Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 on at least two occasions. I downloaded a layered PSD file to work with, in the release notes it directed me to a download page for all of the font used, which was Futura Medium Condensed. I chcked and did not have any Futura fonts at all. So I downloaded and installed the font from the source provided by the provider of the PSD. I closed and reopened Photoshop and when I open the PSD file I get an error saying: Some text layers contain fonts that are missing. These layers will need to have the missing fonts replaced before they can be used for vector based output. I then go to edit the text layer and receive: The following fonts are missing for text layer "discount" Future CondensedExtraBold Font substitution will occur. Continue? If I click OK, it substitutes Myriad Pro for this layer. Didn't I download the right font? I go into the font dropdown and see I have a font with a slightly different name "Futura-CondensedExtraBold-Th Regular" I have also seen this issue with Helvetica. I have received a PSD file, same "some text layers contain fonts that are missing These..." error dialog when I open up the file - and when I go to edit a layer with text I get: The following fonts are missing for text layer "Home": Helvetica Font substitution will occur. Continue? I click continue - it substitutes Myriad Pro - and check my font list and sure enough I have a bunch of Helvetica fonts, none exactly named "Helvetica" Is this a common issue? Googling it yielded a few people with similar problems (I think all on Macs) but either no concrete help or no response. Is it that the two font names aren't EXACT matches? If that is the case is there any way of setting up Photoshop to more intelligently substitute or even set up some sort of mapping (if "Helvetica" then substitute "Helvetica Lt Std" ? Is there anything else, maybe something that I am not thinking of?

• How do I restore tab-completion on shell variables on the bash command-line?

  I've long set my most-recently visited directories to shell variables d1, d2, etc. On an ancient Fedora machine I could type a command like $ cp $d1/ and the shell would replace $d1 with text like /home/acctname/projects/blog/ and would then show me the contents of .../blog, like any tab-completion. Now, both ubuntu wheezy/sid and fedora 16 just -escape the '$', and naturally there are no completions to show. You can see this behavior in action in an OSX Terminal window. On 10.8, do something like ls $HOME/ to see what I mean. Is there a bash shell variable or option that can restore the old behavior? man bash suggests this is a bug: complete (TAB) Attempt to perform completion on the text before point. Bash attempts completion treating the text as a variable (if the text begins with $), username (if the text begins with ~), hostname (if the text begins with @), or command (including aliases and functions) in turn. If none of these produces a match, filename completion is attempted. I get the above described completion when a token starts with '~' or a letter. It's just '$'-completion that's broken.

• apache chokes after 300 connections

  We have an apache webserver in front of Tomcat hosted on EC2, instance type is extra large with 34GB memory. Our application deals with lot of external webservices and we have a very lousy external webservice which takes almost 300 seconds to respond to requests during peak hours. During peak hours the server chokes at just about 300 httpd processes. ps -ef | grep httpd | wc -l =300 I have googled and found numerous suggestions but nothing seems to work.. following are some configuration i have done which are directly taken from online resources. • Mysql: create index on 1.4 billion records

  I have a table with 1.4 billion records. The table structure is as follows: CREATE TABLE text_page ( text VARCHAR(255), page_id INT UNSIGNED ) ENGINE=MYISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=ascii The requirement is to create an index over the column text. The table size is about 34G. I have tried to create the index by the following statement: ALTER TABLE text_page ADD KEY ix_text (text) After 10 hours' waiting I finally give up this approach. Is there any workable solution on this problem? UPDATE: the table is unlikely to be updated or inserted or deleted. The reason why to create index on the column text is because this kind of sql query would be frequently executed: SELECT page_id FROM text_page WHERE text = ? UPDATE: I have solved the problem by partitioning the table. The table is partitioned into 40 pieces on column text. Then creating index on the table takes about 1 hours to complete. It seems that MySQL index creation becomes very slow when the table size becomes very big. And partitioning reduces the table into smaller trunks.

• Linux Firefox copy/paste issue

  I'm using Firefox 15.0.1 on Fedora 17 without running gnome or kde. The problem I'm having is that whenever I select text outside of Firefox, for instance in xterm, the middle mouse button doesn't copy it inside Firefox, for instance in a text area, but rather brings up a context menu. A related problem is that whenever I middle click inside Firefox, for instance in a text input, the middle mouse button brings up a menu when I'd like it to paste. Even if I select Paste in the menu not the selected text (from outside Firefox) gets pasted but the last selected text inside Firefox. In about:config I tried "middlemouse.paste true" and also "middlemouse.paste false" together with the add-on Auto Copy but no combination worked. A middle mouse click always brings up a context menu. But the Auto Copy did help with automatically copying selected text to the clipboard. With Auto Copy the only problem I still have is pasting by middle button. Follow up: somehow the problem solved itself. After removing Auto Copy firefox works as I expect it to (as any X application). I can't figure out why it was not doing it before, probably I was messing too much with about:config and not restarting frequently enough.

  On the live-CD session, I tried installing Lubuntu double clicking on the install button on the desktop. Here, the CD starts running but then stops running and nothing happens. Next, I rebooted and tried installing Lubuntu directly from the boot menu screen using forcepae again. • How To Switch Back to Outlook 2007 After the 2010 Beta Ends

  Are you switching back to Outlook 2007 after trying out Office 2010 beta?  Here’s how you can restore your Outlook data and keep everything working fine after the switch. Whenever you install a newer version of Outlook, it will convert your profile and data files to the latest format.  This makes them work the best in the newer version of Outlook, but may cause problems if you decide to revert to an older version.  If you installed Outlook 2010 beta, it automatically imported and converted your profile from Outlook 2007.  When the beta expires, you will either have to reinstall Office 2007 or purchase a copy of Office 2010. If you choose to reinstall Office 2007, you may notice an error message each time you open Outlook. Outlook will still work fine and all of your data will be saved, but this error message can get annoying.  Here’s how you can create a new profile, import all of your old data, and get rid of this error message. Banish the Error Message with a New Profile To get rid of this error message, we need to create a new Outlook profile.  First, make sure your Outlook data files are backed up.  Your messages, contacts, calendar, and more are stored in a .pst file in your appdata folder.  Enter the following in the address bar of an Explorer window to open your Outlook data folder, and replace username with your user name: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook Copy the Outlook Personal Folders (.pst) files that contain your data. Its name is usually your email address, though it may have a different name.  If in doubt, select all of the Outlook Personal Folders files, copy them, and save them in another safe place (such as your Documents folder). Now, let’s remove your old profile.  Open Control Panel, and select Mail.  In Windows Vista or 7, simply enter “Mail” in the search box and select the first entry. Click the “Show Profiles…” button. Now, select your Outlook profile, and click Remove.  This will not delete your data files, but will remove them from Outlook. Press Yes to confirm that you wish to remove this profile. Open Outlook, and you will be asked to create a new profile.  Enter a name for your new profile, and press Ok. Now enter your email account information to setup Outlook as normal. Outlook will attempt to automatically configure your account settings.  This usually works for accounts with popular email systems, but if it fails to find your information you can enter it manually.  Press finish when everything’s done. Outlook will now go ahead and download messages from your email account.  In our test, we used a Gmail account that still had all of our old messages online.  Those files are backed up in our old Outlook data files, so we can save time and not download them.  Click the Send/Receive button on the bottom of the window, and select “Cancel Send/Receive”. Restore Your Old Outlook Data Let’s add our old Outlook file back to Outlook 2007.  Exit Outlook, and then go back to Control Panel, and select Mail as above.  This time, click the Data Files button. Click the Add button on the top left. Select “Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst)”, and click Ok. • WordPress not resizing images with Nginx + php-fpm and other issues

  Recently i setup a Ubuntu 12.04 VPS with 512mb/1ghz CPU, Nginx + php-fpm + Varnish + APC + Percona's MySQL server + CloudFlare Pro for our Ubuntu LoCo Team's WordPress blog. The blog get about 3~4k daily hits, use about 180MB and 8~20% CPU. Everything seems to be working insanely fast... page load is really good and is about 16x faster than any of our competitors... but there is one problem. When we upload a image, WordPress don't resize it, so all we can do it insert the full image in the post. If the imagem have, let's say, 30kb, it resize fine... but if the image have 100kb+, it won't... In nginx error logs i see this: upstream timed out (110: Connection timed out) while reading response header from upstream, client: 150.162.216.64, server: www.ubuntubrsc.com, request: "POST /wp-admin/async-upload.php HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://unix:/var/run/php5-fpm.sock:", host: "www.ubuntubrsc.com", referrer: "http://www.ubuntubrsc.com/wp-admin/media-upload.php?post_id=2668&" It seems to be related with the issue, but i dunno. So... could anyone help me with those issuees, please? Ooohh... if it helps, i instaled PHP like this: sudo apt-get install php5-fpm php5-suhosin php-apc php5-gd php5-imagick php5-curl And Nginx from the official PPA.   I have been trying to customize Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy heron) alternate install cd. I have followed the community documentation at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallCDCustomization#Generating_a_new_ubuntu-keyring_.deb_to_sign_your_CD to rebuild the ubuntu-keyring packages. But when the media boots I get a warning: anna[7581]: WARNING **: bad md5sum. Though I have not been able to confirm that the message is for the ubunu-keyring-udeb package, the nearest debconf Adding [package] message is for ubuntu-keyring-udeb. This is followed by: INPUT critical retriever/cdrom/error. This message is already from syslog. I don't think dpkg.log will help in this case. I have tried modifying the md5sum file within the source package manually and signing it with my own public key, before building it. But that has not helped either. How do get the installer to work in this scenario? Alternatively, can I customize the contents of Ubuntu8.04 without signing anything?

• How do I create a permanent Bash alias?

  I would like to create an alias to rm command in order to have a confirmation message after executing this command. So I am creating an alias like this alias rm='rm -i'. But as far as I know this is a temporary alias and it lives until you close the terminal. As it is explained here to save alias permanently I need to execute ~/.bash_aliases or ~/.bashrc commands in terminal and add my alias there. But when I execute ~/.bashrc I get following error message : bash: /home/bakhtiyor/.bashrc: Permission denied When I run ~/.bash_aliases I get another error message like this: bash: /home/bakhtiyor/.bash_aliases: File or directory doesn't exist. What is the actual problem and how can I solve it?

  Received a message from Google Webmaster Tools: Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 2 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 40.0%. You can see more details about these errors in Webmaster Tools. Recommended action Contacted HostPapa and they deny that there is any issue with the site / server!!! Support in terms of what I can do to actually resolve this issue is non-existent!!!! The site is currently online. And I don't know much about DNS... so any advice about what I can do to resolve this problem would be much appreciated. Basically, the message from Google says that it is my webhosts fault, the message from my webhost (HostPapa) is... "Just tell google to crawl your site as there are no errors."

• Kernel Panic: Not booting after upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04

  I upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04LTS. Upgrade went fine, even restarted couple of times. Then the next day while booting into Ubuntu, after the grub, it gave the error Kernel panic : not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0). I then booted into live CD and tried the following commands, based on other posts on this forum: sudo fdisk -l As the 8 was on /dev/sda1, sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev Now I got the message: mount: mount point /mnt/dev does not exist Then tried sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc Again got the message: mount point point /mnt/proc does not exist. then tried sudo chroot /mnt Got message: chroot: failed to run comman '/bin/bash': No such file or directory Now have no clue what to do next. Unable to boot into Ubuntu. Please help. Jitesh

• Error opening .wmv file

  I tried to open a .wmv file in Thunderbird. I was asked to download files in order to have it accessible. At the end of the installation An error occurred - Location not found. error message displayed with just the OK button available. Now when I press the Play button just the error message displays so I am not sure which packages need to be installed/uninstalled. I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 (32-bit) with open-jdk-7. Error was generated when installing: GStreamer ffmpeg video plugin It seemed that it took a while to have the process completing all steps of the download / install before the error message displayed.

• System Error Report /usr/bin/Xorg

  I have recently begun getting a System Error Report message when I start up my computer. I haven't installed anything recently other than the usual updates or done anything else out of the ordinary. The details for the report just say "/usr/bin/Xorg". It doesn't seem to be causing me any problems beyond the annoying error message. I saw these questions regarding this problem: System Error Report - Xorg How do I enable or disable Apport? That's all dandy for getting the message to go away, but I'd rather fix the problem. Any ideas how I can make that happen? I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Toshiba NB505. I am, of course, happy to provide any other relevant information that may be needed. Thanks in advance.

• Upgraded to 11.10 lost personal folders, Ubuntu one shows no files

  Upgraded to 11.04, from 10.10 system would only come up in terminal mode, but it told me that an additional upgrade was available and did I want to do that. Foolishly thinking that might fix the problem, I said yes. This time it did not make it all the way through the upgrade, when I came back to the computer over an hour later, the screen was filled with an error message "could not open display", had to reboot. Went to recovery mode on reboot to install nvidia module, when I rebooted system came up fine, but without carrying over my personal folders, I have the home folder, but no personal named folder in it. Came to Ubuntu One, but gives error message; File Sync error. (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked Is the a way around this in order to restore my files? I know my files existed on Ubuntu one as of a few months ago.

  Whenever I boot my laptop, I see this message and it makes the boot process very slow as my screen stays black for a long time before this message appears. It shows just for a split second but today It got worst when my system couldn't boot and stuck on this error, I did several reboots but still couldn't pass this boot error message, then after sometime it fixed itself and now I can use my system as normal. I didn't pay much attention to the error when It was there for just a split second and making my boot process slow, but now that it has stopped me from booting into my system, I would like to know why this error occurring. • One True Event Loop

  Simple programs that collect data from only one system need only one event loop. For example, Windows applications have the message loop, POSIX network programs usually have a select/epoll/etc. loop at their core, pure SDL games use SDL's event loop. But what if you need to collect events from several subsystems? Such as an SDL game which doesn't use SDL_net for networking. I can think of several solutions: Polling (ugh) Put each event loop in its own thread, and: Send messages to the main thread, which collects and processes the events, or Place the event-processing code of each thread in a critical section, so that the threads can wait for events asynchronously but process them synchronously Choose one subsystem for the main event loop, and pass events from other subsystems via that subsystem as custom messages (for example, the Windows message loop and custom messages, or a socket select() loop and passing events via a loopback connection). Option 2.1 is more interesting on platforms where message-passing is a well-developed threading primitive (e.g. in the D programming language), but 2.2 looks like the best option to me.
