• Which programming language should I choose I want to build this website ...? [closed]

  Assuming that I will start with just phot sharing website. Every user can add comments to any photo. After that the site will contain news (general news), the admin can add any news and the moderators as well while the users can also add comments on this news. The website will aslo provide photos uploader, so every user will have up to 20 MB ti upload any photos they want. Other users can see these photos or can not depending on the option that the main user chose(if he wants to publish his photos or not). The site should have a small type of forum which provide the ability for admin to ad categories and for user to add topics and replies for each topic in these categoris. These are the things that I can think of now, but the website will add other features as well and services later on. Can you tell me now which programming language can help me to do all that? I need a programming language that provdies the follwing: 1- speed load for pages of the site. 2- easy to add more functions quickly and easy to edit code for any reason. 3- Secure 4- fast in displaying infromation from database.

• public_html permissions for local development

  I know this question has popped up a couple times, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer to my issue, so please bear with me. I have Ubuntu Server 12.04 setup in VirtualBox for PHP development and testing (Drupal plus other PHP sites using Yii framework). My question is in 3 parts... 1) If I create a public_html folder under /home/myuser, do I need to give ownership of that folder to the Apache www-data group? If so, are there any specific permissions I should be setting? 755? (Btw, I am following this guide to create the public_html directory and set up multiple virtual hosts per site I create and test) I previously had all of my sites under /var/www, but ran into massive permission denied errors whenever I tried to sFTP to it, either through FileZilla or PhpStorm. This is what I had previously done: sudo chgrp www-data /var/www sudo chmod -R 775 /var/www sudo chmod -R g+s /var/www sudo usermod -G www-data [my_ftp_user] 2) The second part of my question is this: If I create my PHP project and files in Windows through PhpStorm, and then upload via sFTP, will permissions get affected? 3) Once I am satisfied with my developed project, would it be advisable to move and test them under /var/www to see how it would fair in a production-ish environment? I would really appreciate the help and advice here. I'm learning more as I go along, but dealing with Linux files and permissions is a bit of a new ballgame for me! Thank you

• Making document storage in Sharepoint a breeze (leave the Web UI behind)

  Hey everyone, I know many of us regularly use Sharepoint for document storage in order to make documents available to several people, have it version controlled, etc.  Doing this through the Web UI can be a real headache, especially when you have multiple documents you want to modify or upload, or when IE isn’t your default browser.  Luckily we can access the Sharepoint library like a regular network drive if we like. Open Sharepoint in Internet Explorer (other browsers don’t support the Open with Explorer functionality), navigate to wherever your documents are stored, choose the Library tab, and then click Open with Explorer. This will open the document storage in Explorer and you can interact with the documents just like they were on any other network drive J  This makes uploading large numbers of documents or directory structures super easy (a simple copy-paste), and modifying your files nice and easy. As an added bonus, you can drag and drop that location from the address bar in Explorer to the Favorites menu so that it’s always easily accessible and you can leave the Sharepoint Web UI behind completely for modifying your documents.  Just click on the new favorite to go straight to your documents.   You can even map this folder location as a network drive if you want to have it show up as another drive (e.g N: drive). • Boot process enter an infinite loop after installing Ubuntu 11.04 together with Windos 7 and XP

  I have a new computer ACER Aspire X3960 which came with Widows 7 preinstalled. I made a new partition where I installed Windows XP and then I installed in new logical partitions (a Swap, a / and a /home partition) Ubuntu 11.04. At the end of the process, the computer enters the very first screen where it says "press DEL to enter BIOS setup, press F12 to enter BOOT options". After a few seconds, the screen goes blank, the computer beeps and then it presents the same screen again. It doesn't even ever go to the grub options of which operating system I want to start. It just loops there forever. I tried to fix the (eventually damaged) grub following these instructions (unfortunately in german) http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/GRUB_2/Reparatur from a LiveUSB, which I'm also using to post this question. • Good podcasting solution?

  I simply ask for the best, most common and simple way to set up a podcast? Please, I need an answer so I can close this question? I run a joomla-based website for a small church and now need a simple, cheap and effective solution for an audio podcast. I am looking for a solution that will do the following: User uploads audio files to service (preferably not to our own site) that is cheap, fast and simple to use. Dropbox for example? Files are easily embeddable into Joomla website articles to be played on the spot (through simple-to-use and media player). Preferably through RSS feeds (to make it easy to update every week). Files are downloadable. Files are viewable on iPhones and other smartphones. Solution can be broadcasted via iTunes. Solution doesn't need a lot of extra, new third party software. I'd rather keep it simple and familiar than have it be a complete new system but with a steep learning curve. At the moment we use vimeo to host the podcast, through video files. But we'd like to move to something simpler that doesn't involve a series of difficult steps to upload the files to the web.

• Cannot usermod -L in LightDM scripts

  I'm running Xubuntu 12.04 and use the LightDM. I want to restrict access to the machine as a kind of parental control. This is how it should work I hook in a script that executes just before the greeter comes up. Within that script some awk processing will read an entry in a config file and will trigger a usermod -L or usermod -U depending on whether the user is allowed to login. While user is logged, a cron job will count down the entry in the config and forces a xfce4-session-logout if time is up. A cron job running on a server will upload the "credits" on a daily base. How is this idea? That's theory, now for the problems It appears for some unknown reason, the usermod command is not executed, neither as part of a display-setup-script nor within the greeter-setup-script. I wrote a small sandbox script usermod -L johndoe 2error.txt touch /etc/blabla 2error.txt The script is executing, cause the blabla file is existing. That means that the script must have been executed with root privileges. error.txt is empty but the usermod command has just no effect. Is this a bug or a feature. What's wrong? • Prevent Nautilus from displaying thumbnails on a specific mount

  I have written a filesystem over Fuse to access a remote pseudo-NAS (the French "Freebox V6", I'll soon publish it as GPL3... when it's a little bit more polished!). The NAS is connected to a home ADSL, thus data comes down at the upload speed of ADSL, which is at best 1Mbps. My mount works fine (read-only at the moment), but Nautilus sees the mountpoint (and all sub-directories) as a "local" filesystem and tries to make thumbnails. As I have a directory full of images, this is quite horrible, because Nautilus then opens ALL the images to try to display the thumbnail. I could switch the Nautilus preferences to "Never" for thumbnails, but then I'll loose thumbnails on my "real" local filesystem. So the question is: with the preference "Only for local filesystem", how can I instruct Nautilus that my mountpoint is in fact NOT a local mount so that it will stop trying to draw thumbnails on that specific mount, but continue "thumbnailing" on mounts that are really local? Edit note: the same things happens if you use "standard worldwide" mounts such as sshfs, davfs,... as long as you mount over a relatively slow network (ADSL) and have images/movies on your mounted tree.

  We have one domain and one sub-domain. Until last week both of them appear in first page of Google search for very important keyword. Unfortunately Google dropped our main domain from search results. our main site has been in first page for 5 years! About one year ago we build this sub-domain. It simply has been redirected to one of pages of main domain. For solving problem we upload a independent site for sub-domain because we guessed that Google think this is our main page of our site. But problem did not solved. What should we do? our main site offer main services and we we want that will be on first page. Shout down sub-domain? Redirect to main site? Put the link of our main site in sub-domain? (About one year ago we put link of this sub-domain to our main site. Google indexed it and continuously bring that to top.) changing in robots.txt ....

• Setting up a LAMP VM server for Development and Testing?

  Info: I would like to set up a VM server on my local computer which will serve pages in the exact same way as my current hosting (but only to me on my local computer). I currently pay a big web hosting company to host my website & web store and they are doing a great job, but I would like to be able to work on my Web site and its corresponding MySQL DB, HTML, and PHP code without being at risk of messing something completely up on the live servers. My current plan of action: Set up a VM webserver with Debian, MySQL, PHP, Apache. Copy web store (PHP/HTML) code to VM server. Copy my current MySQL databases from my hosting provider and install on VM server. Modify and test new features on VM server. Upload MySQL DB and HTML/PHP code back to web host's server where it should work as before but with new modifications. Questions: Now I'm pretty sure I have steps one and two down correctly but I can't for the life of me figure out how to proceed next, so here are my questions. I have my /etc/host file set up so www.MySite.test redirects to the IP address of the local VM webserver. Once I import my PHP/HTML files and MySQL file whats the best way to navigate around the fact that all of my files and DBs will reference www.MySite.com. I can export my MySQL dbs but do I also have to export my MySQL users and passwords to access those db or are those coded into my html/php code?

• Identifying elements from data feeds generated by affiliate sites

  I am working with data feeds from affiliate sites. The basic idea is to provide an interface where the user can paste a link to an XML datafeed (these are huge btw, around 60 mb) that would then be streamed, parsed into small chunks, and mined for the required data which would then be stored in the database. The problem is that different affiliate sites have different Schemas for their XML's. It is a little hard mapping the elements in an XML to your database attributes when you don't actually know which element contains what. My Solution: Use XPath to traverse through the first set of parent and it's descendent's, fetch the elements as well as the data and and ask the user to map this data to the attributes in the database by selecting from a set of radio buttons that represent the attributes from the database. This will be done just once for each new Feed, once the system know's what's what it will automatically upload the data from the XML to the database. Does this sound viable? Is there a better solution? I realize this leaves an uncomfortable opening for human error.. Thanks.

• How to synchronize a whole Ubuntu?

  I think that the time is ripe to have my whole Ubuntu synchronized just as my Dropbox folder is. Given that we are always talking about files and directories, what's the difference between my Documents folder and my /usr system directory? Almost none, except for their location. In fact, I think that there is just one big issue that prevents people to have their beloved installations mirrored wherever they go: symlinks. Dropbox, Google Drive, Ubuntu One, Sugarsync, Skydrive, none of these services support symlinking. This means that if I push a symlink in one of the synced folders, locally the symlink is kept as is, but remotely (in the cloud or on the other synced machines) the symlink is resolved to the actual file that was originally pointed to. This completely disrupts Linux installations, thus these services can't be used for this purpose. So the question is. Does anybody knows a way to achieve this? A whole Ubuntu, always synchronized with a remote running copy, but still locally stored on both disks? My best guess is that I could use NFS. But the main difference between Dropbox and NFS is that NFS is a remote filesystem that always forces to remotely access the files, while Dropbox pushes modifcations to local filesystems (and thus would perform better). I've also heard about NFS caching. Does anybody knows if this solution could approximate Dropbox in this sense? P.s. I know that /boot, /dev, /proc, /run, /tmp and device-specific mountpoints in /mnt and /media will have to be left out the sync mechanism. What I'm interested in is the principle. Can this be done with reasonable performance, having reasonable resources (e.g. ~ 1Mbps upload bandwidth and a public IP address)?

• CentOS drive mapping? [on hold]

  This is the first time I am posting on this particular StackExchange forum and I hope that I am using the right one for the present question. Briefly, this is what I need to do I am running a web service where users can, amongst other things, upload and store files on the server. What I want to do is to hive off user file storage to a different location so my server (CentOS 64 bit) can concentrate on what it does best - server side scripting and database management. As things stand all user files go into subdirectories in a folder called stash that lies above DOC_ROOT. What I would like to do is Transparently detect all attempts to read/write to stash/sub_folder and get/set file data on a remote server - ideally the latter would be one which replicates files like a CDN so they can be delivered from the closest/fastest location based on where the user's location. Even nicer would be if for all read accesses I could provide a URL that allows the user's browser to fetch the relevant file directly without having to funnel them via my server. I am a relative newbie when it comes to this sort of thing so I hope that I have phrased this question adequately well. From the little searching I done I gathered that WebDAV can be used to map drives to a different location on the web so perhaps that is a starting point. But if that will work I need to Establish how to get WebDAV up and running on my CentOS 64 bit server. Ideally, identify a service that allows this kind of file storage and provides an API I can use in my own scripting. I'd much appreciate any help with this.
