• How to build a .Net app which runs on desktop and as a Windows Service

  Ok, I hope this is not too much confusing (with my poor English). I want to build a small .Net 4.0 app which monitors several other applications on a Windows Server OR on a regular Windows PC. It will have a WPF GUI with a variety of graphical controls. The app will be used in the following scenarios: If installed on a PC it should run as a “normal” single Windows desktop app If installed on a Server, it should run as a Windows Service. To use/manage the app it must have the same WPF GUI as in scenario 1 and the GUI should be run on the Server or on a remote PC At the moment I consider to write the application logic and connect it to the WPF GUI using a self-hosted WCF Data Service IN BOTH SCENARIOS. Since I’m not a pro developer I suppose it’s possible that I've missed something ;-) Will this work? Are there other/better solutions? Any answer or comment is highly appreciated.

• Getting graduates up to speed?

  This question got me thinking about how comapnies deal with newly-hired graduated. Do experienced programmers expect CS graduates to write clean code (by clean I mean code easily understandable by others — maybe that is too much to expect?) Or do significant portion of graduates at your place (if any) just end up testing and fixing small bugs on existing applications? And, even if they do bug fixes, do you end up spending double the amount of time just checking they did not end up breaking anything and creating new bugs? How do you deal with such scenarios when pair programming and code reviews are not available options (for reasons such as personal deadlines), and also what techniques did you find to get fresh graduate up to speed? Some suggestions would be great.

  I was moving a lot of databases from one SQL Server to another, and my applications were giving me errors saying "Login failed for <user>". The user was already in the database with appropriate rights to allowed objects in the database. I tried mapping the user to the database and that's when I got this message: "User Already Exists in the Current Database"... I googled and found this very useful post about orphaned users when moving databases. These are the steps you should take to fix this issue: First, make sure that this is the problem.   Since the introduction of OOPL's and event-driven programming, I feel like developing an application has become harder and more tedious, when it should have been the other way around! We should have development tools which can generate prototype apps which can be quickly and easily customized into sophisticated applications, even by novice users! We really need new ideas in this area of software development and I would like to know of any good ideas. If we can't really find them, then we should ask "Where did we miss the boat?.. Why?.. and What should we be doing?"

  Our shop has identified several reasons why releasing our software solutions to the open source community would be a good idea. However, there are several reasons from a business stand point why converting our shop to open source would be questioned. I need help from anyone out there who has gone through this transition, or is in the process. Specifically a government entity. About our shop: - We develop and support web and client applications for the local law enforcement community. - We are NOT a private company, rather a public sector entity Some questions that tend to come about when we have this discussion are: We're a government agency, so isn't our code already public? How do we protect ourselves from being 'hacked' if someone looks into our code? (There are obvious answers to this question like making sure you don't hard code passwords, etc. However, the discussion needs to consider an audience of executives who are very security conscience.)

• What's the normal way machine-learning algorithms are integrated into normal programs?

  I'm currently taking a machine learning course for fun, and the course heavily focuses on Matlab/Octave to write the code. One thing mentioned in the course is that, while Matlab/Octave are great for prototyping, they're very rarely used for production algorithms. Instead, those algorithms are typically rewritten in C++/Python/etc., using appropriate libraries, before reaching customers. Fair enough; I get that. But here's my question: is that done for cultural reasons, for technical reasons, or because there is really no language that provides Matlab/Octave-like fluidity, but in a compiled form that can be linked from C/C++/$MainstreamLanguage? The game industry uses Lua for game logic because it's easy to embed, and vastly superior for expressing things like AI. Likewise, there are Prolog variants for rules-heavy applications, Scheme variants for compilers, and so on. If there's a matrix equivalent language, what is it? If there isn't, why is this field different?

The most fundamental relationship would be that a "product" has "versions" and a given "version" is used by a "client."   My screen brightness used to dim after a few seconds to preserve battery. This is default in Ubuntu 12.04. However when watching video it should not dim. This works correctly when I watch videos using native applications like VLC. With in-browser video, however, the screen is not prevented from dimming. This is very annoying as you have to move your cursor every 10 seconds or so. I used to use Mac OSX where I had the same dimming settings and Flash videos were taken into account correctly. Anyone an idea how you can make YouTube prevent your screen from dimming?

  I am attempting to create a pair programming environment sort of set up like multiseat: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultiseatX[1] or https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultiseatOneCard[2] (as the standard issue boxes only have one graphics card) The thing is, I only want one login session, just with 2 monitors, keyboards, and mice. As well as having 2 active applications (so 2 people can be typing independantly). They should ideally be able to mouse over and click & type in the other persons monitor, as well as move windows between the montors. Does anybody know of anything like this that will work? We are running Ubuntu 12.04.

  What should an application developed under a Linux System like Ubuntu do so as to automatically detect the system language? There are applications, like Liferea that automatically change their language to match the system's, without altering any preference of the program itself: Should this be the "default" behavior for all the programs? Should there be an option on the program so as to let the user choose the language nonetheless? Are all these translations coming along with the program itself? What if the user has set a system language not available in the translations of the program? Is this Ubuntu or most-linux-distros specific?

• Stop KDE services from running

  I recently installed KDE with the command sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop. Now whenever I log into Unity I can see KDE-related services running in the background and I see no obvious way to prevent them from opening at startup. I checked bum but I see nothing there. These are the services I see running right now: kde4 klauncher knotify4 These ones I can identify as being related to KDE given their names, but there could be more. How can I prevent these services from launching by themselves? I should mention I often use KDE applications such as kate, okular and kile. Could these be responsible for opening those services?

Of course, its quite reasonable to say "I design software" or "I develop computer applications", but that still feels somewhat "lame" and generic.
