• Deploying DotNetNuke and separate ASP.NET Application together - Possible Issues?

  I am making this in a proactive attempt to head off any potential problems which could arise from this. The situation is that we are developing an ASP.NET application for a client which will handle the online ordering from their customers. This application is going to be using the same database that their current WinForms application uses (no real issue here). At the same time we are developing a new front-end website for them using DotNetNuke. The DotNetNuke app will simply be linking to the ASP.NET application for the customers to submit their orders (no need for them to communicate back and forth, etc.) The plan is to host both applications on the same box at the client location. What I am looking for are potential problems or setup tips which would prevent possible conflict between the two apps (web.config conflicts, etc.) Is there a problem with having both hosted on the same location, how should IIS be set up, etc.? If there are any external resources also available which could address this, please feel free to link them as well.

  I am supposed to: Capitalize the first letter of string. Capitalize every word except articles (the, a, an), conjunctions (and), and prepositions (in). Capitalize i (as in "I am male."). Specify the first word of a string (I actually have no idea what this means. I'm trying to run the spec file to test other functions). • What is the minimal licensable source code?

  Let's suppose I want to "protect" this code about being used without attribution, patenting it, or through any open source licence... #include<stdio.h> int main (void) { int version=2; printf("\r\n.Hello world, ver:(%d).", version); return 0; } It's a little obvious or just a language definition example.. When a source stop being "trivial, banal, commonplace, obvious", and start to be something that you may claim "rights"? Perhaps it depends on who read it, something that could be great geniality for someone that have never programmed, could be just obvious for an expert. It's easy when watching two sources there are 10000 same lines of code, that's a theft.. but that's not always so obvious. How to measure amount of "ownness", it's about creativity? line numbers? complexity? I can't imagine objetive answers for that, only some patches. For example perhaps the complexity, It's not fair to replace "years of engeneering" with "copy and paste". But is there any objetive index for objetive determination of this subject? (In a funny way I imagine this criterion: If the licence is longer than the code, then there is no owner, just to punish not caring storage space and world resources =P)

• Structuring the UI code of a single-page EXTjs Web app using Rails?

  I’m in the process of creating a large single-page web-app using ext-js for the UI components with Rails on the backend. I’ve come to good solutions for transferring data using Whorm gem and Rails support of RESTful Resources. What I haven’t come to a conclusion on is how to structure the UI and business logic aspects of the application. I’ve had a look at a few options, including Netzke but haven’t seen anything that I really think fits my needs. How should a web-application that uses ext-js components, layouts, and controls in the browser and Rails on the server best implement UI component re-use, good organization, and maintainability while maintaining a flexible layout design. Specifically I’m looking for best-practice suggestions for structuring the code that creates and configures UI components (many UI config options will be based on user data) Should EXT classes be extended in static JS for often re-used customizations and then instantiated with various configuration options by generated JS within html partials? Should partials create javascript blocks that instantiate EXT components? Should partials call helpers that return ruby hashes for EXT component config which is then dumped to Json? Something else entirely? There are many options and I'd love to hear from people who've been down this road and found some methodology that worked for them.

• Google AppEngine + Local JUnit Tests + Jersey framework + Embedded Jetty

  I use Google Appengine for Java (GAE/J). On top, I use the Jersey REST-framework. Now i want to run local JUnit tests. The test sets up the local GAE development environment ( http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/java/tools/localunittesting.html ), launches an embedded Jetty server, and then fires requests to the server via HTTP and checks responses. Unfortunately, the Jersey/Jetty combo spawns new threads. GAE expects only one thread to run. In the end, I end up having either no datstore inside the Jersey-resources or multiple, having different datastore. As a workaround I initialise the GAE local env only once, put it in a static variable and inside the GAE resource I add many checks (This threads has no dev env? Re-use the static one). And these checks should of course only run inside JUnit tests.. (which I asked before: "How can I find out if code is running inside a JUnit test or not?" - I'm not allowed to post the link directly here :-|)

  I'm having a little issue. I am trying to incorporate the Klazuka/Kal project into my project. I've done the following: I added the Kal.xcodeproj and all files to my project Under Build Phases, I've added Kal to "Target Dependencies" Under Build Phases, I've added libKal.a under "Link Binary With Libraries" Under Build Phases, I've added Kal.bundle to "Copy Bundle Resources" Under Build Settings, I've added "“$(BUILT_PRODUCTS_DIR)” (or “$(BUILT_PRODUCTS_DIR)/static_library_name”" for "Header Search Paths" and "User Header Search Paths". Under Build Settings, I've added the path to Kal under "Library Search Paths" Under Build Settings, I've added -ObjC, -all_load, and -force_load under "Other Linker Flags" I've edited my Build Scheme and list the Kal Target prior to my main application target with Analyze, Test, Run, Profile, and Archive all checked.   At the risk of stepping into holy war territory, What are the strengths and weaknesses of these popular DI/IoC frameworks, and could one easily be considered the best? ..: Ninject Unity Castle.Windsor Autofac StructureMap Are there any other DI/IoC Frameworks for C# that I haven't listed here? In context of my use case, I'm building a client WPF app, and a WCF/SQL services infrastructure, ease of use (especially in terms of clear and concise syntax), consistent documentation, good community support and performance are all important factors in my choice. Update: The resources and duplicate questions cited appear to be out of date, can someone with knowledge of all these frameworks come forward and provide some real insight? I realise that most opinion on this subject is likely to be biased, but I am hoping that someone has taken the time to study all these frameworks and have at least a generally objective comparison. I am quite willing to make my own investigations if this hasn't been done before, but I assumed this was something at least a few people had done already. Second Update: If you do have experience with more than one DI/IoC container, please rank and summarise the pros and cons of those, thank you. This isn't an exercise in discovering all the obscure little containers that people have made, I'm looking for comparisons between the popular (and active) frameworks.

  there is a specific niche which I would like to target by providing a complete enterprise level software solution.... the problem is, where do i begin ? meaning, i come from writing just desktop software on VB/ASP .net/PHP/mysql and suddenly unfamiliar terms popup like Oracle, SAP Business Information Warehouse, J2EE.... obviously, something is pointing towards Java, is it common for software suites, or solutions to be developed 100% on Java technology and standards? Are there any other platform to build enterprise level software on ? i am still lacking understanding what exactly is "Enterprise level" ? what is sufficient condition to call a software that sells for $199 and then suddenly it's $19,999 for "enterprise" package. I dont understand why there is such a huge discrepancy between "standard" and "enterprise" versions of software. Is it just attempting to bag large corporations on a spending spree ? so why does one choose to develop so called "enterprise" softwares ? is it because of the large inflated price tag you can justify with ? i would also like some more enterpreneural resources on starting your own enterprise software company in a niche.... • How do I consume a self hosted WCF service with Compact Framework client?

  Hello - I've been trying to figure out how to consume a self hosted WCF service from a Windows CE device. I've not found any good resources that walk through this process online. I've found some good samples for self hosting, and that part seems to be working fine, but not sure how to go about consuming on the compact framework. In the past I was able to use NetCFSvcUtil.exe, but this doesn't seem to work with a self hosted service. NetCFSvcutil says: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive. Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. I've used Jason Henderson's sample http://www.codeproject.com/KB/WCF/WCFexample.aspx to get started with self hosting and that part works as expected. Can any one point me to a sample where a compact framework client is used to consume a self hosted WCF service? or give a brief explanation of how I create the plumbing on the compact framework side? For the host application I'm using a WinForm .Net 3.5 project and for the client a WinForm Compact Framework 3.5 project. Thanks!

• how to filter files from the root "classes" and "test-classes" folders in Eclipse?

  I am using ClearCase in my application which generates a whole load of ".copyarea.db" files (one in every folder). These cause conflicts when publishing to Tomcat as Eclipse will bundle the "classes" and "test-classes" folders into one JAR (not sure why it does this - as there is no need to have test classes available on the application server). Any folders with the same names will have a separate .copyarea.db in the classes and test-classes branches. I managed to get around this problem in general by adding ".copyarea.db" to the Filtered resources on the Java->Compiler->Building->Output Folder preference page. This stops the file appearing in source output (package/class folders), the vast majority of cases. However there remains the problem of the root folder, i.e. "target/classes/.copyarea.db" and "target/test-classes/.copyarea.db". These files are not filtered as they are not part of the compile task. Just deleting the files manually doesn't help either, as Eclipse expects to find them and doesn't. How can I exclude these ".copyarea.db" files from the root "classes" and "test-classes" folders?

• C# Interop.Word Adding an Image from project resource folder

  Hi guys. Having some image problem with Interop.Word and C#. I want to add an image in the header of the document that I am going to generate. I have this code working perfectly section.Headers[Word.WdHeaderFooterIndex.wdHeaderFooterPrimary].Shapes.AddPicture(@"C:\Logo.jpg", ref x, ref x, ref x, ref x, ref x, ref x, ref x); Problem is that I can't have "C:\Logo.jpg" in the code since after publishing the project, there would most probably be no Logo.jpg in the C folder of the user. The image is already in my project's resource folder. I've used Image.FromFile("Logo.jpg") before but .AddPicture requires a string and not an image. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. • Dynamic evaluation of a table column within an insert before trigger

  HI All, I have 3 tables, main, types and linked. main has an id column and 32 type columns. types has id, type linked has id, main_id, type_id I want to create an insert before trigger on the main table. It needs to compare its 32 type columns to the values in the types table if the main table column has an 'X' for its value and insert the main_id and types_id into the linked table. i have done a lot of searching, and it looks like a prepared statement would be the way to go, but i wanted to ask the experts. The issue, is i dont want to write 32 IF statements, and even if i did, i need to query the types table to get the ID for that type, seems like a huge waist of resources. Ideally i want to do this inside of my trigger: BEGIN DECLARE @types results_set -- (not sure if this is a valid type); -- (iam sure my loop syntax is all wrong here)... SET @types = (select * from types) for i=0;i<types.records;i++ { IF NEW.[i.type] = 'X' THEN insert into linked (main_id,type_id) values (new.ID, i.id); END IF; } END; Anyway, This is what i was hoping to do, maybe there is a way to dynamically set the field name inside of a results loop, but i cant find a good example of this. • The Current State Of Serving a PHP 5.x App on the Apache, LightTPD & Nginx Web Servers?

  Being stuck in a MS stack architecture/development position for the last year and a half has prevented me from staying on top of the world of open source stack based web servers recent evolution more than I would have liked to. However I am now building an open source stack based application/system architecture and sadly I do not have the time to give each of the above mentioned web servers a thorough test of my own to decide. So I figured I'd get input from the best development community site and more specifically the people who make it so. This is a site that is a resource for information regarding a specific domain and target audience with features to help users not only find the information but to also interact with one another in various ways for various reasons. I chose the open source stack for the wealth of resources it has along with much better offers than the MS stack (i.e. WordPress vs BlogEngine.NET). I feel Java is more in the middle of these stacks in this regard although I am not ruling out the possibility of using it in certain areas unrelated to the actual web app itself such as background processes. I have already come to the conclusion of using PHP (using CodeIgniter framework & APC), MySQL (InnoDB) and Memcached on CentOS. I am definitely serving static content on Nginx. However the 3 servers mentioned have no consensus on which is best for dynamic content in regards to performance. It seems LightTPD still has the leak issue which rules it out if it does, Nginx seems it is still not mature enough for this aspect and of course Apache tries to be everything for everybody. I am still going to compile the one chosen with as many performance tweaks as possible such as static linking and the likes. I believe I can get Apache to match the other 2 in regards to serving dynamic content through this process and not having it serve anything static. However during my research it seems the others are still worth considering. So with all things considered I would love to hear what everyone here has to say on the matter. Thanks!

• Combining two .png images into one image using .NET

  I have two (actually many) .png images in my application. Both have transparent areas here and there. I want, in my application, to take both images, combine them, and display the result in a picture box. Later I want to save the result through a button. So far I managed to find the two images and combine them, but it seems the transparency thing won't work. I mean, if you put one image over another, only the top image is visible as the result because, apparently, the image's background is a plain white box. Which is not.   Hello, I am trying to do something that I thought would be simple. I need to create a WCF service that I can post to via JQuery. I have an operation in my WCF service that is defined as follows: [OperationContract] [WebInvoke(Method = "POST", BodyStyle = WebMessageBodyStyle.WrappedRequest, RequestFormat=WebMessageFormat.Json, ResponseFormat=WebMessageFormat.Json)] public string SendMessage(string message, int urgency) { try { // Do stuff return "1"; // 1 represents success } catch (Exception) { return "0"; } } I then try to access this operation from an ASP.NET page via JQuery. In it, I receive an error that says: "Encountered unexpected character 'c'." This message is included with a long stack trace. My question is, what am I doing wrong? • OpenMP in Fortran

  I very rarely use fortran, however I have been tasked with taking legacy code rewriting it to run in parallel. I'm using gfortran for my compiler choice. I found some excellent resources at https://computing.llnl.gov/tutorials/openMP/ as well as a few others. My problem is this, before I add any OpenMP directives, if I simply compile the legacy program: gfortran Example1.F90 -o Example1 everything works, but turning on the openmp compiler option even without adding directives: gfortran -openmp Example1.F90 -o Example1 ends up with a Segmentation fault when I run the legacy program. Using smaller test programs that I wrote, I've successfully compiled other programs with -openmp that run on multiple threads, but I'm rather at a loss why enabling the option alone and no directives is resulting in a seg fault. I apologize if my question is rather simple. I could post code but it is rather long. It faults as I assign initial values: REAL, DIMENSION(da,da) :: uconsold REAL, DIMENSION(da,da,dr,dk) :: uconsolde ... uconsold=0.0 uconsolde=0.0 The first assignment to "uconsold" works fine, the second seems to be the source of the fault as when I comment the line out the next several lines execute merrily until "uconsolde" is used again. • Is there a table of OpenGL extensions, versions, and hardware support somewhere?

  I'm looking for some resource that can help me decide what OpenGL version my game needs at minimum, and what features to support through extensions. Ideally, a table of the following format: 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.2.1 1.3 ... multitexture - ARB ARB core core texture_float - EXT EXT ARB ARB ... (Not sure about the values I put in, but you get the idea.) The extension specs themselves, at opengl.org, list the minimum OpenGL version they need, so that part is easy. However, many extensions have been accepted and became core standard in subsequent OpenGL versions, but it is very hard to find when that happened. The only way I could find is to compare the full OpenGL standards document for each version. On a related note, I would also very much like to know which extensions/features are supported by which hardware, to help me decide what features I can safely use in my game, and which ones I need to make optional. For example, a big honkin' table like this: MAX_TEXTURE_IMAGE_UNITS MAX_VERTEX_TEXTURE_IMAGE_UNITS ... GeForce 6xxx 8 4 GeForce 7xxx 16 8 ATi x300 8 4 ... (Again, I'm making the values up.) The table could list hardware limitations from glGet but also support for particular extensions, and limitations of such extension support (e.g. what floating-point texture formats are supported in hardware). Any pointers to these or similar resources would be hugely appreciated!

• Breaking dependencies when you can't make changes to other files?

  I'm doing some stealth agile development on a project. The lead programmer sees unit testing, refactoring, etc as a waste of resources and there is no way to convince him otherwise. His philosophy is "If it ain't broke don't fix it" and I understand his point of view. He's been working on the project for over a decade and knows the code inside and out. I'm not looking to debate development practices. I'm new to the project and I've been tasked with adding a new feature. I've worked on legacy projects before and used agile development practices with good result but those teams were more receptive to the idea and weren't afraid of making changes to code. I've been told I can use whatever development methodology I want but I have to limit my changes to only those necessary to add the feature. I'm using tdd for the new classes I'm writing but I keep running into road blocks caused by the liberal use of global variables and the high coupling in the classes I need to interact with. Normally I'd start extracting interfaces for these classes and make their dependence on the global variables explicit by injecting them as constructor arguments or public properties. I could argue that the changes are necessary but considering the lead never had to make them I doubt he would see it my way. What techniques can I use to break these dependencies without ruffling the lead developer's feathers? I've made some headway using: Extract Interface (for the new classes I'm creating) Extend and override the wayward classes with test stubs. (luckily most methods are public virtual) But these two can only get me so far.

• How do i set the Transaction Isolation in EJB?

  Hello, I am not able to find a way to set TransactionIsolation in ejb. Can anybody tell me how do i set it? I am using persistence. I have looked the following classes : EntityManager , EntityManagerFactory, UserTransaction. None of them seems to have any method like setTransactionIsolation or such. Do we need to change persistence.xml? I just read a book named Mastering EJB 3.0 4th edition. They gave a full 10 page theory about Isolation level that this problems occur and that occurs and such things but at the end they gave this paragraph :- "As we now know, the EJB standard does not deal with isolation levels directly, and rightly so. EJB is a component specification. It defines the behavior and contracts of a business component with clients and middleware infrastructure (containers) such that the component can be rendered as various middleware services properly. EJBs therefore are transactional components that interact with resource managers, such as the JDBC resource manager or JMS resource manager, via JTS, as part of a transaction. They are not, hence, resource components in themselves. Since isolation levels are very specific to the behavior and capabilities of the underlying resources, they should therefore be specified at the resource API levels. " What exactly does it mean? What is meant by resource level APIs? Please help me. If persistence has no way to set Isolation Level then why do they give such huge theory in an EJB book and make it heavy in weight unnecessarily :(

• Questions about the Backpropogation Algorithm

  I have a few questions concerning backpropogation. I'm trying to learn the fundamentals behind neural network theory and wanted to start small, building a simple XOR classifier. I've read a lot of articles and skimmed multiple textbooks - but I can't seem to teach this thing the pattern for XOR. Firstly, I am unclear about the learning model for backpropogation. Here is some pseudo-code to represent how I am trying to train the network. [Lets assume my network is setup properly (ie: multiple inputs connect to a hidden layer connect to an output layer and all wired up properly)]. But not properly. The output is always XOR 1 1 [smallest number] XOR 0 0 [largest number] XOR 1 0 [medium number] XOR 0 1 [medium number] I can never train the [1,1] [0,0] to be the same value. If you have any suggestions, additional resources, articles, blogs, etc for me to look at I am very interested in learning more about this topic. • Classical task-scheduling assignment

  I am working on a flight scheduling app (disclaimer: it's for a college project, so no code answers, please). Please read this question w/ a quantum of attention before answering as it has a lot of peculiarities :( First, some terminology issues: You have planes and flights, and you have to pair them up. For simplicity's sake, we'll assume that a plane is free as soon as the flight using it prior lands. Flights are seen as tasks: They have a duration They have dependencies They have an expected date/time for beginning Planes can be seen as resources to be used by tasks (or flights, in our terminology). Flights have a specific type of plane needed. e.g. flight 200 needs a plane of type B. Planes obviously are of one and only one specific type, e.g., Plane Airforce One is of type C. A "project" is the set of all the flights by an airline in a given time period. The functionality required is: Finding the shortest possible duration for a said project The earliest and latest possible start for a task (flight) The critical tasks, with basis on provided data, complete with identifiers of preceding tasks. Automatically pair up flights and planes, so as to get all flights paired up with a plane. (Note: the duration of flights is fixed) Get a Gantt diagram with the projects scheduling, in which all flights begin as early as possible, showing all previously referred data graphically (dependencies, time info, etc.) So the questions is: How in the world do I achieve this? Particularly: We are required to use a graph. What do the graph's edges and nodes respectively symbolise? Are we required to discard tasks to achieve the critical tasks set? If you could also recommend some algorithms for us to look up, that'd be great.

• Are you using C++0x today? [closed]

  This is a question in two parts, the first is the most important and concerns now: Are you following the design and evolution of C++0x? What blogs, newsgroups, committee papers, and other resources do you follow? Even where you're not using any new features, how have they affected your current choices? What new features are you using now, either in production or otherwise? The second part is a follow-up, concerning the new standard once it is final: Do you expect to use it immediately? What are you doing to prepare for C++0x, other than as listed for the previous questions? Obviously, compiler support must be there, but there's still co-workers, ancillary tools, and other factors to consider. What will most affect your adoption? Edit: The original really was too argumentative; however, I'm still interested in the underlying question, so I've tried to clean it up and hopefully make it acceptable. This seems a much better avenue than duplicating—even though some answers responded to the argumentative tone, they still apply to the extent that they addressed the questions, and all answers are community property to be cleaned up as appropriate, too.

• SQLAlchemy Custom Type Which Contains Multiple Columns

  I would like to represent a datatype as a single column in my model, but really the data will be stored in multiple columns in the database. I cannot find any good resources on how to do this in SQLAlchemy. I would like my model to look like this(this is a simplified example using geometry instead of my real problem which is harder to explain): class 3DLine(DeclarativeBase): start_point = Column(my.custom.3DPoint) end_point = Column(my.custom.3DPoint) This way I could assign an object with the (x, y, z) components of the point at once without setting them individually. If I had to separate each component, this could get ugly, especially if each class has several of these composite objects. I would combine the values into one encoded field except that I need to query each value separately at times. I was able to find out how to make custom types using a single column in the documentation. But there's no indication that I can map a single type to multiple columns. I suppose I could accomplish this by using a separate table, and each column would be a foreign key, but in my case I don't think it makes sense to have a one to one mapping for each point to a separate table, and this still does not give the ability to set the related values all at once.

• Android - Where to store generated bitmaps?

  I've got an app which dynamically generates anywhere from 6 to 100 small bitmaps for the user to move around the screen in a given session. I currently generate them in onCreate and store them to the sd card, so that after an orientation change I can grab them out of external storage and display them again. However, this takes time (the loading) and I'd like to keep the bitmap references around between lifecyle changes for quicker access. My question is, is there a better place to store my generated bitmaps? I was thinking about creating a static storage library in my base activity, something that would only need to be reloaded when the app is completely removed from memory (shutdown, other apps need resources, 30 minute restart, etc). Ideally, I'd like the user to be able to back out to the title screen, click a "Resume" button, and in onCreate I just have access to those resident bitmap references instead of having to load them from storage again. For this reason I don't think Activity.onRetainNonConfigurationInstance is what I need. Alternatively, is there a better way to handle multiple generated bitmaps than what I'm doing or the plan I described?
