• VPN IP Routing - slow connections

  UPDATE: Router error logs show: LCP Time-out 0 I'm not sure how to correct this. The Lan-to-Lan profiles are set to -1 Idle Timeout (for the remote branch). I have a PPTP VPN running between two Draytek 2820 routers. They are setup that one dials out to the other one. Main Practice - 192.168.1.0/24 Branch - 192.168.3.0/24 I have then set (on the Branch) router the following route: 192.168.1.0/24 If I then request a server running on 192.168.1.1 from the Branch, it correctly routes through VPN tunnel. If I request the branch server at 192.168.3.1 it correctly routes to the local server without using the VPN tunnel. I have temporarily disabled the firewall on both routers, and made sure that QoS is disabled. The Main Practice internet connection is ~30mb down / ~10mb up, and the Branch connection is ~5mb down / ~2mb up. Anything over the VPN tunnel runs pretty slowly (VNC, Remote Desktop and Terminal Emulators). However, if I dial using the Windows VPN wizard, creating a connection from the laptop to the Main Practice - everything runs quickly. I'm looking for possible causes, and/or ways of further diagnosing the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated! UPDATE: In summary, when I connect within the Branch and try and access a host that's within the Main Practice it works, but slowly. If I then dial the VPN on my Windows 7 laptop whilst still connected to the Branch network, it's fast. • Dependency Injection with Custom Membership Provider

  I have an ASP.NET MVC web application that implements a custom membership provider. The custom membership provider takes a UserRepository to its constructor that provides an interface between the membership provider and NHibernate. The UserRepository is provided by the Ninject IoC container. Obviously, however, this doesn't work when the provider is instantiated by .NET: the parameterless constructor does not have a UserRepository and cannot create one (the UserRepository requires an NHibernate session be passed to its constructor), which then means that the provider cannot access its data store. How can I resolve my object dependency? It's probably worth noting that this is an existing application that has been retrofitted with Ninject. Previously I used parameterless constructors that were able to create their required dependencies in conjunction with the parametered constructors to assist unit testing. Any thoughts, or have I built myself into a corner here?

• Python (pdb) - Queueing up commands to execute

  I am implementing a "breakpoint" system for use in my Python development that will allow me to call a function that, in essence, calls pdb.set_trace(); Some of the functionality that I would like to implement requires me to control pdb from code while I am within a set_trace context. Example: disableList = [] def breakpoint(name=None): def d(): disableList.append(name) #**** #issue 'run' command to pdb so user #does not have to type 'c' #**** if name in disableList: return print "Use d() to disable breakpoint, 'c' to continue" pdb.set_trace(); In the above example, how do I implement the comments demarked by the #**** ? In other parts of this system, I would like to issue an 'up' command, or two sequential 'up' commands without leaving the pdb session (so the user ends up at a pdb prompt but up two levels on the call stack. • copy or move a file from one ftp server to another

  I have a java application, which copies or moves a bunch of giga files from one ftp server to another. Currently it copies a file from the first fpt server to the local computer (where it runs) using ftp get and then copies it to the second ftp server using ftp put. I use net library from apache. Is it possible to copy it directly from one ftp server to another bypassing the local computer? One idea is to create a java telnet session and and send a couple of ftp commands. Will it work? Any other suggestions?

• How to manage memory using classes in Objective-C?

  This is my first time creating an iPhone App and I am having difficulty with the memory management because I have never had to deal with it before. I have a UITableViewController and it all works fine until I try to scroll down in the simulator. It crashes saying that it cannot allocate that much memory. I have tried adding autorelease, release, and other stuff like that but that just causes the entire app to crash before even launching. The Subversion server is running CollabNet Subversion Edge with LDAP authentication. • Apache taking up too much CPU

  I'm trying to manage a server on Amazon for a network of sites that receives about 100 million pageviews per month. Unfortunately, nobody out of my team of 5 developers has much server admin experience. Right now we have the MaxClients set to 1400. Currently our traffic is about average, and we have 1150 total Apache processes running, which use about 2% CPU each! Out of those 1150, 800 of them are currently sleeping, but still taking up CPU. I'm sure there are ways to optimize this. I have a few thoughts: It appears Apache is creating a new process for every single connection. Is this normal? Is there a way to more quickly kill the sleeping processes? Should we turn KeepAlive on? Each page loads about 15-20 medium-sized graphics and a lot of javascript/css. So, here's our Apache setup. We do plan on contracting a server admin asap, but I would really appreciate some advice until we can find someone. • Embedding ASPX in ASP page

  Hi all, I have an ASPX based component which I'd need to inlude into a plain ASP based script. Scenario is, that I'm working within an LMS system (Angel to be exact) and I wan't to create a new nugget within that framework. An Angel nugget is pretty much what a portlet is in the Java world. Now, the nugget spec. states that my starting point has to be a file called default.asp. What I'd like to do is: read relevant data from ASP session pass data to ASPX component have ASPX do it's job and display the results My problem is that I fail to run / display my ASPX component without using an iframe, which I want to avoid since that crushes the layout / design of my nugget. Is there a way to get this done properly or do I have to rewrite my component in ASP to get this going? As a side note, in case I'm doing this all wrong, I would like to be able to make changes to the .Bids list without incrementing Version. I saw an example on Ayende's blog that did what I wanted with properties.

• WCF Service worker thread communicate with ServiceHost thread

  I have a windows NT Service that opens a ServiceHost object. The service host context is per-session so for each client a new worker thread is created. What I am trying to do is have each worker thread make calls to the thread that started the service host. The NT Service needs to open a VPN connection and poll information from a device on the remote network. The information is stored in a SQL database for the worker threads to read. I only want to poll the device if there is a client connected, which will reduce network trafic. I would like the worker threads to tell the service host thread that they are requesting information and start the polling and updating the database. Everything is working if the device is alway being polled and the database being updated.

  Hi, I am working on a cache replication solution between nodes Node A - master node = Hibernate + Database + Ehcache as secondary cache Node B - regional node= Ehcache as prmiary cache. no Hibernate Node B is used only as near-by cache for query. Now I am updating data (Say SudentInfo) in Node A, it gets persisted and cached correctly. On replication side (I am using JMS) it sends a message to Node B. But the problem is, the message it sends is of instance CacheEntry(deep Inside Element), there is no way to resurrect the original object (StudentInfo). What I got in node B is CacheEntry with some attributes of Students but not actually an Student Object. Please note that I don't need Hibernate session/persistence in Node B, node B is only for fast query, persistence is done through Node A. So has anybody tried any solution like this? Is there any way to convert CacheEntry to actual object? or Tell ehcache to replicate original object rather than CacheEntry. Thanks for the help

I need to select the children (or the ids of the children) with the lowest grade per class. session.CreateCriteria(typeof(Classs)) .CreateAlias("Children", "children") .SetProjection(Projections.ProjectionList() .Add(Projections.Min("children.Grade")) .Add(Projections.GroupProperty("Id")) ) .List<Object[]>(); This query returns me the lowest grade per class, but I don't know which child got the grade. When I add the children's Id to the group, the group is wrong and every child gets returned. I was hoping we could just select get the id's of those childs without grouping them. If this is not possible, then maybe there is a way to solve this with subqueries?

• uploading via http post (multipart/form-data) silently fails with big files

  When uploading multipart/form-data forms via a http post request to my apache web server, very big files (i.e. 30MB) are silently discarded. On the server side all looks as if the attached file was received with 0 bytes size. On the client side all looks like it had been uploaded succesfully (it takes the expected long time to upload and the browser gives no error message). On the server, nothing is logged into the error log. An entry is logged into the access log as if everything was ok (a post request and a 200 ok response). These uploads are being posted to a php script. In the php script, If I print_r $_FILES, I see the following information for the relevant file: [file5] => Array ( [name] => MOV023.3gp [type] => video/3gpp [tmp_name] => /tmp/phpgOdvYQ [error] => 0 [size] => 0 ) Note both [error] = 0 (which should mean no error) and [size] = 0 (as if the file was empty). My php script runs fine and receives all the rest of the data except these files. move_uploaded_file succeeds on these files and actually copies them as 0byte files. I've already changed the php directives max_upload_size to 50M and post_max_size to 200M, so neither the single file nor the request exceed any size limit. max_execution_time is not relevant, because the time to transfer the data does not count; and I've increased max_input_time to 1000 seconds, though this shouldn't be necessary since this is the time taken to parse the input data, not the time taken to upload it. Is there any apache configuration, prior to php, that could be causing these files to be discarded even prior to php execution? Some limit in size or in upload time? I've read about a default 300 seconds timeout limit, but this should apply to the time the connection is idle, not the time it takes while actually transferring data, right? Needless to say, uploads with all exactly identical conditions (including file format, client and everything) except smaller file size, work seamlessly, so the issue is clearly related to the file or request size, or to the time it takes to send it.

• WebBrowser control not submitting form, IE 7 works

  We are using a WebBrowser control in our win forms application which is running in terminal services. IE 7 is the browser that is installed for the session. We are using WebForms to generate the web pages. If we try and submit a web page in the WebBrowser control it does not work. The submit button does not push down. If we try and submit a web page in IE 7 that is installed on the same machine it works as expected. This is only an issue for one person. The WebBrowser control is working for other users. Any thoughts on how I can debug why the submit button is not submitting for the WebBrowser control? Thanks in advance.

• Listening to the iPhone mic with SCListener and playing music at the same time: how?

  Hello, I am using Stephen Celis' SCListener class (for iPhone) to "listen" from the microphone, but I also need to be playing music at the same time using the MediaPlayer framework. However, when I start listening with SCListener, the music fades out and stops. I have set the kAudioSessionCategory_PlayAndRecord property on the audio session in SCListener, which should allow me to play audio and record audio at the same time, but as far as I can tell it has no effect. I'm confused, because according to other developers' results, this works just fine, but not for me. I'm thinking maybe the kAudioSessionCategory_PlayAndRecord property allows you to play sound and record if you're using the AVAudioPlayer framework or something to play the sound, but maybe not the MediaPlayer framework? This would be a problem for me because I need to play music from the user's iPod library, which, as far as I know is only possible to do using the MediaPlayer framework. Does anyone know how I can get around this problem? Thanks in advance!

Is there a good opensource lightweight framework which takes care of the user management part? (Register, edit user info, retrieve lost password etc). I'm a flash platform developer and not aware of how to take care of stuff like session hijacking, XSS etc. Should I go ahead and learn to do all this on my own, without using any framework? I thought of using Wordpress' user management system, but not sure how easy that would be. Any suggestion would be great.

I want to get all Foos that have Bars with Bazes. • Process.Start concatenating cmd line from previous invocation

  Hi, I am using a Process.Start in .Net 2.0 to start a child win32 app. Process.start ( "SomeProcess.exe", "<Cmd line>" ); The process runs fine but and the user then closes this window. However if I then run the same process again in the same session, the cmd line recieved by the called process is now a concatentation of the previous call. I.e SomeProcess.exe recieves the cmd line " SomeProcess.exe ". Has anyone else seen this behaviour before? Any help much appreciated. Ralph.

• Pair programming tools that are not remote

  I am currently in a job where we practice serious pair programming on windows machines. We both have a set of keyboards, mice, and we have two monitors, which works well for switching who's the driver really easy, but there are some points in the session that I would like to start writing tests at the same time that my pair is writing implementation. I am wondering if there is any program that would allow me to have effectively two cursors and keyboard focuses on the same computer. If they don't exist then I am willing to experiment with my own solution, but I would like input as to how to best accomplish this. I am most familiar with .Net 3.5 technologies, but I also know Java and am willing to learn C++ to solve this problem. If I was creating the solution myself I would go down the road of being able to grab the input of one hardware device (i.e. a specific mouse that's installed) and prevent Windows from moving the pointer, and instead move my own programs pointer independently.
