• How do I mount my Android phone's filesystem on MacOS X? [closed]

  I'm running a fully rooted Nexus One with Android 2.1. I can see /data/data in DDMS, both the plugin and the tool -- but when I attach my phone, I still can't see the main drive. All I can see is the SD card. Using OSX, when I use Disk Utility, I can see the machine then see the SD Card. Is the problem that none of the tools I am using, except DDMS and ADB shell, know how to read that main Android drive? It's the same format as the qemu img, right? Again -- my goal is to mount the phone's root filesystem on my MacOS X host when connected via USB.

  In my opinion WWW will sooner or later come to full-blown AJAX web-sites, so that we wouldn't have page reloads every time you click somewhere. Now I want you to ask this. What tools and frameworks can one use to make a Java Web-application running on Tomcat have AJAX functionality like "in-place, with no page reloading" table sorting by clicking on its column header, multi-tabs that enable opening at once the new screen to the user without reloading a page, saving data in the database without reloading a page, and other similar things that we do not usually see on web pages. That's all should probably be based on AJAX. But how to integrate this AJAX functionality with existing java web-frameworks, let's say Spring MVC? Or maybe there are other frameworks that better suit such needs but that can be integrated with core Spring?

  I read that object dependencies have been improved in SQL server 2008. I have a rather complex database schema containing stored procedure, user-defined functions, triggers. Can anybody give me a query that would return the right order of creation of those items based on their dependencies ? I read here that there are tools that can do the job, but I am looking for something scriptable. Also, they often give the dependencies of one object and I would like a database-wide solution. • Measuring CPU time per-thread on Windows

  I'm developing a long-running multi-threaded Python application for Windows, and I want the process to know the CPU time that each of its threads has taken. I can get the overall times for the entire process with os.times() but I need to know the per-thread times. I know that there are external tools such as the Sysinternals Process Explorer, but my program itself needs to have this information. If I were on Linux, I look in the /proc filesystem, as described here. If I were writing C code, I'd use the GetThreadTimes call, as described here. So how can I accomplish this on Windows using Python?

  I'm one of those people who can't get anything done without a to-do list. If it isn't on the list it doesn't exist. Notepad Method: When I'm programming I've been keeping notepad open with a list of to-do's for my current project. I'll constantly re-arrange these based off priority and I cross them off and move them to the completed section when I'm finished with that particular task. Is this just a difference in versions of Interface Builder? Where did it go?

• Any ideas for developing a Risc Processor friendly string allocator?

  I'm working on some tools to enable high throughput data-oriented development, and one thing that I've not got an immediate answer for is how you go about allocating strings quickly. On risc processors you've got another problem of implementation that the CPU doesn't like branching, which is what I'm trying to minimise or avoid. Also, cache coherence is important on most CPUs, so that's gotta be influential in the design too. So, how would you go about reducing the overhead for a generic string allocator? Sometimes it's easier to solve a more explicit problem, so any ideas for string sizes of 5-30?

• Software Protection: Shuffeling my application?

  Hi, I want to continue on my previous question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3007168/torrents-can-i-protect-my-software-by-sending-wrong-bytes Developer Art suggested to add a unique key to the application, to identifier the cracker. But JAB said that crackers can search where my unique key is located by checking for binary differences, if the cracker has multiple copies of my software. Then crackers change that key to make them self anonymous. That is true. Now comes the question: If I want to add a unique key, are there tools to shuffle (a kind of obfuscation) the program modules? So, that a binary compare would say that the two files are completely different. So they can't locate the identifier key. I'm pretty sure it is possible (maybe by replacing assembler blocks and make some jumps). I think it would be enough to make 30 to 40 shuffles of my software. Thanks

  Hi All, I need to find the most efficient way of matching multiple regular expressions on a single block of text. To give an example of what I need, consider a block of text: "Hello World what a beautiful day" I want to replace Hello with "Bye" and "World" with Universe. I can always do this in a loop ofcourse, using something like String.replace functions availiable in various languages. However, I could have a huge block of text with multiple string patterns, that I need to match and replace. I was wondering if I can use Regular Expressions to do this efficiently or do I have to use a Parser like LALR. I need to do this in JavaScript, so if anyone knows tools that can get it done, it would be appreciated.

• Good way to "wrap" jars for OSGi with Maven

  I was looking at the PAX tools on OPS4J for example: this one and I thought I'd found a nice way to: Specify an artifact Create an assembled jar (jar that contains all dependencies) from that jar and it's transitive dependencies Wrap it with BND to create an OSGi bundle It turns out, that I was wrong - it doesn't appear that the PAX stuff does this. (RTFM, right? :) ) But this got me wondering: is there something out there that does what I'm asking? I've thought maybe I could do this by creating a simple POM and using the maven-bundle-plugin but this seems like it might be a bit cumbersome for what I'm asking. NOTE: I get that embedding and assembling jar's is not really "the OSGi way" - so I wouldn't do this unless I really felt it useful. For example - Spring. Thanks in advance.

• How can an animator do animation targeted for the iPhone

  Hi, I'm working with an animator for the iPhone. The animator I'm working with isn't a programmer and has a background in Flash. (right now she's doing the animation in Flash and I need to convert to Objective C). For some it's ok because I can just use image frames, but there are more complex animation that would take longer for me to convert to Objective C. The problem is that despite their poor knowledge and skills, they are sure of their abilities, to the point where I find it hard to teach them "better ways". What's the best way to tackle this?   While not a torrent, but some articles can be found on the net about function testing (particularly http://blogs.sun.com/geertjan/entry/gui_testing_on_the_netbeans). However the tools mentioned by them do not seem to be maintained, or don't have a plugin working with the most recent version of Netbeans (6.8). Do you have any function test setup for GUI? What is your level of integration into the development process (IDE integration, ant, etc). Additional candy is that Netbeans is not only the IDE, but the GUI app is also developed for Netbeans 6.8 Platform (so I'm mainly interested in GUI testing NB-platform apps, but tips for any Swing apps in general would be a help too).

"Porting Linux apps to Windows". I mean porting native Linux apps to native Windows with no platforms involved. If I can find any good book which explains this topic. I've lot of amazing linux command line tools in mind which needs a windows port. Please point me to relevant articles/tutorials/books. Ideally something easy to use, customisable (i.e. supports various flavours of nodes and splines) and preferably with automated layout control.   I created Setup project for my Excel add-in project according to the article: Deploying a Visual Studio Tools for the Office System 3.0 Solution for the 2007 Microsoft Office System Using Windows Installer http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc563937(office.12).aspx I add prerequisites such as 2007 Interop assemblies(Office2007PIA) and when I run my setup file it does install it. But the problem is : That my setup ALWAYS installs it even if my computer already has Office2007PIA. How can I configure my setup project that it will first check if Office2007PIA is installed and continue the installation of my project without installing Office2007PIA? Thanks!

  Is there any mechanism to comment out large blocks of Python code? Right now the only ways I can see of commenting out code are to either start every line with a #, or to enclose the code in """ (triple quotes), except that actually makes it show up in various doc tools. Edit--After reading the answers (and referring to the "duplicate"), I have concluded the correct answer is "No". One person said so, and the rest lectured us about editors. Not a bad thing, but I feel it's important to put the answer at the top.

• Is there a strategy to back-port C# code?

  Hi all, I intend using the Argotic framework in support of a .Net Atom server. Unfortunately my target server (over which I have no control) only has .Net 1.1 - any the Argotic library is only in .Net 2 and 3.5. So, I now need to back-port the code to 1.1. Can anybody provide any strategic tips for this undertaking? I'm aware of the merits of using Unit Tests to verify the ported code (here). should I be looking for automated tools? should I just import the code into VS2003 .Net 1.1 project and work through the compiler warnings? • Shift browser contents to the left while viewing in wide screen

  I use a widescreen laptop. Many websites have their content centre aligned. On wider screens this means lot of empty space on left and right. As such this is not a botheration. Many a times, I read some instructions on the web page and type them out on the command prompt. I prefer to overlay the command prompt window on top of the browser and if the browser contents are left aligned (or right aligned), then I need not Alt-tab across these windows. I use Firefox on Ubuntu. I use the command line (konsole) heavily. I know compiz (and similar) tools provides transparent windows so that the content beneath is visible. But I don't want to install compiz or its equivalent because my graphics driver is not all that good. Any addon or simple trick that would shift the page content to the left (or right) would be very helpful (read productive).

• .NET Windows Service, threads and garbage collection (possible memory leaks)

  I am developing a .NET Windows service that is creating a couple of threads and then uses these threads to send print jobs to printers (there is a thread for each printer). I have some issues which sometimes can be fixed by restarting the service. Some issues also arise when the service has been running for a while. This makes me suspect a possible memory leak. So, a couple of questions: Would a garbage collector collect an object if it was created inside a thread, or will the object exist until the thread is stopped/terminated? What tools can I use to monitor the amount of memory used by a Windows service and by a thread that I am starting programmatically?

• Experience with SVN vs. Team Foundation Server?

  A few months back my team switched our source control over to Subversion from Visual SourceSafe, and we haven't been happier. Recently I've been looking at Team Foundation Server, and at least on the surface, it seems very impressive. There is some great integration with Visual Studio, and lots of great tools for DBA's, testers, project managers, etc. The most obvious difference between these two products is price. It's hard to beat Subversion (free). Team Foundation Server is quite expensive, so the extra features would really have to kick Subversion in the pants. My question is: does anyone have practical experience with both? How do they compare, and is Team Foundation Server actually worth all the money?

• How can I check that I didn't break anything when refactoring?

  I'm about to embark on a bout of refactoring of some functions in my code. I have a nice amount of unit tests that will ensure I didn't break anything, but I'm not sure about the coverage they give me. Are there any tools that can analyze the code and see that the functionality remains the same? I plan to refactor some rather isolated code, so I don't need to check the entire program, just the areas that I'm working on. For context, the code I'm working on is in C/C++, and I work in Linux with GCC and VIM.

• Why avoid pessimistic locking in a version control system?

  Based on a few posts I've read concerning version control, it seems people think pessimistic locking in a version control system is a bad thing. Why? I understand that it prevents one developer from submitting a change while another has the file checked out, but so what? If your code files are so big that you constantly have more than one person working on them at the same time, I submit that you should reorganize your code. Break it up into smaller functional units. Integration of concurrent code changes is a tedious and error-prone process even with the tools a good version control system provides to make it easier. I think it should be avoided if at all possible. So, why is pessimistic locking discouraged?

• XHTML editor wanted!

  I need an editor that outputs clean HTML, and preferably strict XHTML with CSS, as I am going to display the resulting pages as help pages in a java application using xhmtlrenderer ("Flying Saucer") which apparently very much prefers XHTML with CSS 2.1. Having searched stackoverflow for HTML editor and XHTML editor, I've found several mentioned. Aptana is one, Eclipse's Web Tools is another, and KompoZer is a third. I am going to try these out. With this question, I ask whether there are other good options that would satisfy my requirements, and if there are any one of these mentioned or new ones that you'd recommend in particular, that I should focus a bit extra on?
