• Strategies for Accessing a Application with a COM API From PHP

  Background: Experienced PHP developer with a mostly *nix background. I'm writing a PHP application that needs to interact with a proprietary 3rd party system. The 3rd party system is Windows only. The PHP application will be living on a separate Linux based system The 3rd party application has been described as having a "COM API" that I'll need to talk to from the PHP application. What does this look like architecturally speaking? I'm starting with the COM section of the PHP manual, but I have specific questions. Specific Questions: Can I talk directly to a COM API from a PHP application running on another server? If so, how? (what PHP extensions would I need, or what protocols/PHP functions would I be using to talk to the API) If the answer to number 2 is no, I'd assume I'd need some kind of application on the Windows machine that can talk to COM, and then a service on the windows machine I can hit with PHP. Are there prebuilt frameworks for this kind of thing? Is this all nonsense and/or did I say something exceedingly stupid? (Quite possible, as I'm a little fuzzy on what "COM" does and doesn't cover) I'm obviously not looking for a full solution here, I'm just trying to get a general idea of what is and isn't possible and what kind of things I'll want to Google for. • Format Java Code in Netbeans / Eclipse, but save it differently

  Hi all, I asked a related question before, but I guess the root of the question is. Let's say I have 2 developers on the team and they both like to look at code in different formats. One likes the braces to be on a new line and the other doesn't. The approach I was using before is that anytime we run a build, the code is automatically formatted according to the Java/Sun standards using Jalopy; however, I would like the developers to be as happy as possible. They can change the font size, font color, background color, etc. If I am currently using the Jalopy Maven plugin to format code, can/should I write a hook to SVN that calls mvn jalopy:format on the project when it's checked in? Is this reliable? That solution doesn't work 100% because it requires the developer to manually format the source code to their liking every time they open a file that hasn't been formatted yet. I was thinking an IDE plugin would be nice as it could automatically format the source to their liking and then save it as another. What other options do I have to ensure the code is formatted nicely on checkin? Thanks, Walter

• Rich faces and dataTable

  Hi all :) I have the question regarding rich faces and beans. I have a jsp page that is using richfaces and inside it I have the: rich:extendedDatatable component, that takes data from my MainBean as ArrayList (this bean queries the mySQL and puts results to the ArrayList that populates the dataTable later on). There are 4 columns in datatable, first 3 are h:outputLabels and the last one is checkbox. Now I have a question: how can I get information from selected row ? I mean, when user clicks checkbox, I want to take the id/name or whatever that is associated to this particular row, then when user clicks on Apply changed a4j: button I will update the database and when user logs in back again he will see updated info: e.g. checkbox is selected/not selected now because the user checked that. I believe that is a simple query for someone who worked with it. For me ex. flash developer it would be easy in as3, but here I didnt find the solution yet, please help. • Reduce number of config files to as few as possible

  For most of my applications I use iBatis.Net for database access/modeling and log4Net for logging. In doing this, I need a number of *.config files for each project. For example, for a simple application I need to have the following *.config files: app.config ([AssemblyName].[Extention].config) [AssemblyName].SqlMap.config [AssemblyName].log4Net.config [AssemblyName].SqlMapProperties.config providers.config When these applications go from DEV to TEST to PRODUCTION environments, the settings contained in these files change depending on the environment. When the number of files get compounded by having 5-10 (or more) supporting executables per project, the work load on the infrastructure team (the ones doing the roll-outs to the different environments) gets rather high. We also have a high risk of one of the config files being missed, or a mistype in the config file. What is the best way to avoid these risks? Should I combine all of the config files into one file? (is that possible with iBatis?) I know that with VisualStudio 2010 they introduce transforms for these config files that allow the developer to setup all the settings for the different environments and then dynamically (depending on the build kicked off) the config files get updated to the correct versions. (VS 2010 - transforms) Thank you for any help that you can provide.

• BITS client fails to specify HTTP Range header

  Our system is designed to deploy to regions with unreliable and/or insufficient network connections. We build our own fault tolerating data replication services that uses BITS. Due to some security and maintenance requirements, we implemented our own ASP.NET file download service on the server side, instead of just letting IIS serving up the files. When BITS client makes an HTTP download request with the specified range of the file, our ASP.NET page pulls the demanded file segment into memory and serve that up as the HTTP response. That is the theory. ;) This theory fails in artificial lab scenarios but I would not let the system deploy in real life scenarios unless we can overcome that. Lab scenario: I have BITS client and the IIS on the same developer machine, so practically I have enormous network "bandwidth" and BITS is intelligent enough to detect that. As BITS client discovers the unlimited bandwidth, it gets more and more "greedy". At each HTTP request, BITS wants to grasp greater and greater file ranges (we are talking about downloading CD iso files, videos), demanding 20-40MB inside a single HTTP request, a size that I am not comfortable to pull into memory on the server side as one go. I can overcome that simply by giving less than demanded. It is OK. However, BITS gets really "confident" and "arrogant" demanding files WITHOUT specifying the download range, i.e., it wants the entire file in a single request, and this is where things go wrong. I do not know how to answer that response in the case of a 600MB file. If I just provide the starting 1MB range of the file, BITS client keeps sending HTTP requests for the same file without download range to continue, it hammers its point that it wants the entire file in one go. Since I am reluctant to provide the entire file, BITS gives up after several trials and reports error. Any thoughts?

• Can't debug Java Windows Services with jhat, jps, jstack

  I frequently showcase the jhat, jps, and jstack tool set to developers on Linux and Mac. However, a developer recently indicated that these are unusable in Windows if the Java app in question is running as a Windows Service. A Sun-filed bug says something very similar, but was closed due to inactivity. I have tested this out for myself, and indeed it appears true, though I can hardly believe it. Here is the setup: Tomcat or similar running as a Windows service with the "Log On As" == "Local System" A user with Admin privileges logged in to the same Windows machine. Admin opens Windows Task Manager, can see java.exe running Admin opens console, types "jps", gets back a list of processes that does not include Tomcat's java service process. As a brute force attempt, get the PID of tomcat as a service from Windows Task Manager. Type jstack < pid . Get a reply: < pid no such process This appears reproducible under Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, and Windows 7. Java versions 1.5 and 1.6 yield the same outcome. Is there a way from the terminal, even though logged in as Admin, to "sudo up" to get JPS and the other tools to see the java service?

• Asynchronously populate datagridview in Windows Forms application

  howzit! I'm a web developer that has been recently requested to develop a Windows forms application, so please bear with me (or dont laugh!) if my question is a bit elementary. After many sessions with my client, we eventually decided on an interface that contains a tabcontrol with 5 tabs. Each tab has a datagridview that may eventually hold up to 25,000 rows of data (with about 6 columns each). I have successfully managed to bind the grids when the tab page is loaded and it works fine for a few records, but the UI freezes when I bound the grid with 20,000 dummy records. The "freeze" occurs when I click on the tab itself, and the UI only frees up (and the tab page is rendered) once the bind is complete. I communicated this to the client and mentioned the option of paging for each grid, but she is adament w.r.t. NOT wanting this. My only option then is to look for some asynchronous method of doing this in the background. I don't know much about threading in windows forms, but I know that I can use the BackgroundWorker control to achieve this. My only issue after reading up a bit on it is that it is ideally used for "long-running" tasks and I/O operations. My questions: How does one determine a long-running task? How does one NOT MISUSE the BackgroundWorker control, ie. is there a general guideline to follow when using this? (I understand that opening/spawning multiple threads may be undesirable in certain instances) Most importantly: How can I achieve (asychronously) binding of the datagridview after the tab page - and all its child controls - loads. • MonoRail: Testing, Route Extensions, Folder Structures

  I've got a few questions related to the use of MonoRail Testing Does everyone tend to use NUnit for their testing? I haven't worked enough with testing to know if this is a good testing framework to use. I'm just looking to get more into testing my applications a lot more than before and wanted to know if there's any general guidelines. Are you supposed to copy the controller over to a test area and just rename it with test in the name and re-run it? How do you ensure your test project and main project coincide with one another? Is it just a case of copying everything over again or are there tools available to do it for you? Route Extensions MonoRail tends to use <action>.rails, can you omit the .rails part if you configure your routing correctly? Why does this seem to be the standard? Folder Structures I haven't found anywhere which really points out your standard folder structure. Sure, you have Controllers, Models, and Views. But your Models folder should contain your data access objects as well. I've seen some have something like -> Models -> DaoClasses -> Entities But what about custom structures used to get data out of views? And if you're using NHibernate, where's a good place to stick the mappings? I know it's entirely dependent on the developer, but I haven't really seen any standard approach. Cheers

  Hello, I have been a desktop developer for a few years mostly doing object oriented stuff. I am trying to branch out into web development, and as a hobby project trying to put a web application together. I have been reading quite alot of information, but I still can't seem to decide on the path to take and would really like some advice. I have been using visual studio for that, is that a good IDE for this tye of thing or should I try expression blend? Jpolite seems to do everything with javascript, which seems kind of cool, but I if I want to make a chart inside a widget that connects to a database, do I need something more? Is this where ASP.NET comes in? I am familiar with .NET, but if I use ASP.NET for my website, do I have to host it on IIS and windows server as opposed to Apache since mono is still being ironed out? Because that would cost more, so would PHP be a better choice? Also, for charting these guys as well as google seem to use flex: http://www.google.com/finance I have found this: http://www.reynoldsftw.com/2009/03/javascript-chart-alternatives/ Would that be sufficient to implement something like google fiance purely in javascript or is there a good reason they use flex? Besides the fact that translations tend to be not as good as the original text, I can't search for those and find relevant answers to my problems on the internet. So: How do I switch my German Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition to English locals? Update - Just to make it clear: I am a German developer, working with a German Windows Vista... I also have a German version of Visual Studio, so it is not surprising, that everything is German. Is just don't want it that way... There must be a way to install english locals into my Visual Studio, though? Or uninstall german ones, so that default english is used?!? (BTW: Same thing for SQL Server Management Studio, too. F**k "Sichten". I want "Views". That's how you really call them. No one says "Sichten", not even here in Germany, and not even though it is translated correctly).

  What Java web framework out there best supports a role of "web UI designer", that is, lets you: Use popular web design tools (xhtml validators, css editors, what have you) on your views/pages View changes without running on a server Rapidly prototype different UI options Supports a (somewhatly) clean separation between "developer" and "designer" (terminology intentionally vague) We, like many others, have found these capabilities sorely lacking in our large, legacy Struts 1.x apps that use lots of JSP fragments and includes. We've decided to port our apps to a JSR-168/268 portal environment, but we have not decided on what Java web framework will power the portlets. We're open to any kind (action-based, component-based, etc) and a key criterion is how well it supports the role described above. I'm intrigued by Tapestry which claims that its views are XHTML compliant pages (that simply have extra Tapestry-specific attributes added onto them to be processed at runtime). This sounds like it would play well with a web ui designer's toolkit. However, I'd like to know if this is what actually happens in the real world, or if compromises are necessary. Of course, if there's something much better than Tapestry, I'd love to hear about it!

  Hello, I'm familiar with X86[-64] architecture & assembly. I want to start develop for an ARM processor. But unlike desktop processors, I don't have an actual ARM processor. I think I need an ARM simulator. http://www.armtutorial.com/ say An ARM assembly compiler will be required, the most accessible is the ARMulator. I thought of downloading Armulator but found from http://forums.arm.com/index.php?showtopic=13744 that Its not sold seperately. But you can download an eval of RVDS - which includes RVISS/ARMulator I've downloaded & installed RVDS but It looks very complex. I'm unable to figure out what do I need to do to write ARM assembly & run it. I want to write in assembly not in C/C++. I don't have an ARM processor. What is a good simulator? Can any one please mention in short. How to write assembly & assemble & simulate using RVDS. Please be clear? Are there any other alternative ways. I can't afford buying any kind of boards. I always learn from books rather than tutorials. I'm following these two books: ARM System Developer's Guide: Designing and Optimizing System Software (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Architecture and Design) ARM System-on-Chip Architecture (2nd Edition) Do you have any better suggestions?

Overall, I am considering the following recipe: Install VMWare Fusion or Parallels or VirtualBox for running the Windows OS Buy a version of Windows to develop on Buy Windows Developer tools Having been in the open source universe all this time, I am utterly unfamiliar with the options/packages in the Windows world. I could use some help on the following: Does the recipe above look fine, or do I need to change something? What is a good VM environment to buy/use? VirtualBox is free, but Parallels/VMWare promise Windows app that blend in with my Mac windows. Could use some help on this topic Does MSFT sell a package deal which has bare bones Windows 7 and the necessary dev tools, or do I need to buy the OS and dev tools separately? • Project with multiple binaries in Eclipse CDT

  I think it is quite normal to have more than one binary in a project. However, with Eclipse CDT I don't know how to set up the IDE to get things done. I know I can create several projects - one per binary. And I know I can set the dependencies per project. However, I cannot regard them as one project in Eclipse. If I'd like to share the code with a version control system (like svn), each developer has to import the projects separately. What I miss is something like the Solution (sln file) in Visual Studio. Should I create a single project and create the make files by myself? I haven't tried it out yet, but there is this 'project set' which can be ex- and imported. Is this the solution? Can this be put into version control? My goal it to put everything under version control, not only subprojects. I cannot imagine that CDT makes only sense for single-binary applications. How can I work properly?

  I'm trying to use a standard Intent that will take a picture, then allow approval or retake. Then I want to save the picture into a file. Here's the Intent I am using: Intent intent = new Intent(android.provider.MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE ); startActivityForResult( intent, 22 ); The docs at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/provider/MediaStore.html#ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE say "The caller may pass an extra EXTRA_OUTPUT to control where this image will be written. If the EXTRA_OUTPUT is not present, then a small sized image is returned as a Bitmap object in the extra field. If the EXTRA_OUTPUT is present, then the full-sized image will be written to the Uri value of EXTRA_OUTPUT." I don't pass extra output, I hope to get a Bitmap object in the extra field of the Intent passed into onActivityResult() (for this request). So where/how do you extract it? Intent has a getExtras(), but that returns a Bundle, and Bundle wants a key string to give you something back. What do you invoke on the Intent to extract the bitmap?

  Hello, I've started to read the book "Code Craft" by Pete Goodliffe. The fourth chapter is about instruments that developer uses during his daily work; this chapter made me to review my work and I've seriously decided to make it easier with fully personalized IDE. Eclipse IDE is what I've started my learning from... I've read documentation and found that it's really easy to do tasks routine from Eclipse. We are using Mantis for tracking tasks and it was great surprise for me to find out Mantis Connector for Mylyn. Also I was pretty glad to see SVN client integrated into Eclipse IDE. Also I've found UML2 tool for Eclipse, but was disappointed because there is no any graphic interface for building diagramms. (Or, maybe, I'm was searching in wrong place?) What useful plugins do you use in your daily work? How do you use Eclipse for collaboration in your team? Do you have any links about intergration Eclipse IDE experience in dev. team? Thank you!

  I was reading this page and I found the following statement: MVC in Java Server Pages Now that we have a convenient architucture to separate the view, how can we leverage that? Java Server Pages (JSP) becomes more interesting because the HTML content can be separated from the Java business objects. JSP can also make use of Java Beans. The business logic could be placed inside Java Beans. If the design is architected correctly, a Web Designer could work with HTML on the JSP site without interfering with the Java developer. Interestingly in my textbook I pulled the following quote: In the MVC architecture... the original request is always handled by a servlet. The servlet invokes the business logic and data access code and creates beans to represent the results (that’s the model). Then, the servlet decides which Java Server Page is appropriate to present those particular results and forwards the request there (the JSP is the view). The servlet decides what business logic code applies and which JSP should present the results (the servlet is the controller). The two statements seem slightly contradicting. What is the best way to use beans: should we place business logic in them or should we only place results in them? Are there ways in which beans are inadequate for representing a model?

  Is there a good guide or tutorial for people who need to programmatically interact with dynamic websites? There's been a rash of Perl questions about that lately, and I haven't found a good resource to point people toward. I'm asking not because I need one but because I don't want to waste my time writing it if it already exists. Although I'm most interested in Perl, the extra tools and techniques are mostly the same. Typically, I see see these problems in people's questions: Handling, setting, and saving cookies Finding and interacting with forms Handling JavaScript inside your user-agent especially things like onLoad, onSumbit, and Ajax Using HTTP sniffer tools Using Web developer plugins in interactive browsers Interacting with DOM, screen scraping, etc. If there's no good tutorial, I'll add it to my list of things to do (unless someone else wants to do it :). Along the way, if you don't have a suggestion for an existing tutorial, please suggest the things that you think should be in a new one, including links, your favorite tools, and your own user-agent development experiences. I don't care about the particular language you use.

A program I've been developing has been in need of constant bugfixes, and me and users are getting tired of having to manually update. Me, because my current solution of Manually FTP to my website Update a file "newest.txt" with the newest version Update index.html with a link to the newest version Hope for people to see the "there's an update" message Have them manually download the update sucks, and whenever I screw up an update, I get pitchforks. Over the past I have looked into: WinSparkle - No in-app updates, and the DLL is 500 KB. My current solution is a few KBs in the executable and has no in-app updates. http://windowsclient.net/articles/appupdater.aspx - I can't comprehend the documentation http://www.codeproject.com/KB/vb/Auto_Update_Revisited.aspx - Doesn't appear to support anything other than working with files that aren't in use wyUpdate - wyBuild isn't free, and the file specification is simply too complex. Maybe if I was under a company paying me I could spend the time, but then I may as well pay for wyBuild. http://www.kineticjump.com/update/default.aspx - Ditto the last sentence. ClickOnce - Workarounds for implementing launching on startup are massive, horrendous and not worth it for such a simple feature. Publishing is a pain; manual FTP and replace of all files is required for servers without FrontPage Extensions. I'm pretty much ready to throw in the towel right now and strangle myself. And then I think about Sparkle... EDIT: I came across SparkleDotNET just then. Looks good, though the DLL is 200 KB. Don't know if that's really that big of an issue, though.

• AjaxControlToolkit Resource Files Not Copied To Output in MSBuild Script

Now, the script works fine and the output is generated correctly. The only problem I counter is with two WebApp projects in the solution that use the AJAX Control Toolkit. The toolkit has a set of folders (e.g. ar, it, es, fr) that contain localized resources. These folders are not copied in the bin directory of the WebApps when the solution is built in MSBuild, but they are copied when it is built in Visual Studio. How can I solve this in a clean manner? I know I could write a (quite convoluted) task that copies the directories after the compile, but it does not seem the right solution to me. Also, neither Google, SO and MSDN could provide more details on this kind of issue.

• iPhone Objective-C service handlers

  Hello community! I am a as3 developer, I am used to use handlers everytime I launch an event and I am wondering which is the best way / practice to do that in Objective C. Let's say I want to call a diferent services from my backend. In as3 would be something like this to listent to the finish event: service.addEventListener( Event.COMPLETE, handler_serviceDidFinished ) service2.addEventListener( Event.COMPLETE, handler_serviceDidFinished2 ) But how can I do the same in Objective C? The problem is I already created the protocols and delegates, but how can I separate each response from the server? For example: -(void)callService:( NSString * )methodName withParameters:(NSMutableDictionary *) parameters { ... if (self.delegate != NULL && [self.delegate respondsToSelector:@selector(serviceDidFinishSuccessfully:)]) { [delegate serviceDidFinishSuccessfully:data]; } } Well I'm trying to create a generic delegate here, so how can I separate each response for every service? My first idea is that maybe I should return the name of the service method in the delegate call to identify each service. Maybe I should create a UID for each service and pass it the same way... Any idea?
