• .NET Database Apps: Your Preferred Setup

  I'm struggling to settle into a pattern for developing typical database driven apps in C# and Visual Studio. There are so many ways to set them up, using drag/drop datasets and adapters or writing the queries manually in ADO.NET or Linq to SQL, Linq to Entities, to bind or not to data bind etc etc. Where to store the connection string, in app.config or in a method or both etc etc. So many tutorials and all of them are different. Everytime I write something I start hating the way it looks and works, so I scrap it and start over. It's getting a bit tedious. Maybe it's alittle of the OCD in me. Would any of you professional developers out there share your method of setting up and structuring your database logic and maybe some sample code? It's really how to go about organizing the code and the method(s) of interacting with SQL that I'm trying to get into a routine with, one that works and won't get me laughed at by someone reviewing it.

• Rabbitmq queue sharding

  I have to implement this scenario: An external application publish message to rabbitmq. This message has a client_id property. We can place this id to routing key or message header or some other property. I have to implement sharding in a exchange routng logic - the message should be delivered to specific queue based on the client_id range. Is it possible to implement in a standard exchanges? If not what exchange should I take as the base? How to dynamicly change client_id ranges?

• RenderAction in an HtmlHelperExtension Method?

  I am trying to call the RenderAction Extension Method within my own Html Helper: System.Web.Mvc.Html.ChildActionExtensions.RenderAction(helper, "account", "login"); this is so that along with some additional logic, I would like all html helpers to use a common method name structure when calling it on the view: <%= Html.CompanyName().RenderAccount() %> but the problem I am having is that, asp.net will complain about not finding the actual route it needs to process. It does not take in the parameters of "controller" to be used as the action and "login" to be used as the action. It seems to only reference the current route. Any ideas how I can package up the RenderAction?

• Difference between C++ Keyboard keycode and JAVA KeyEvent keycode

  I noticed a difference between the keycodes that vkCode in C++ gives and the ones that Java's KeyEvent gives us. (Ofcourse the normal characters have the same code (0 = 48 just like the ASCII) but they differ in the other keys). Is there a way to 'translate' them from one to the other (What's the logic behind each one?) or am I supposed to use loads of switches and IFs for that. If it helps, my app is half in C++ and half in JAVA because of the Native Hooks that c++ gives us and it gets the keycodes of the keys that the user presses and then the java is going to use them. • Getting "on the wire" Size of Messages in WCF

  While I'm making SOAP or REST invocations to WCF, I'd like to have the channel stack on either end (client and server) record the on-the-wire size of the data received. So I'm guessing I need to add a custom behavior to the channel stack on either side. That is, on the server side I'd record the IP-header advertised size that was received. On the client side I'd record the IP-header advertised size that was returned from the server. But this presupposes that this information is visible to a custom WCF behavior at the channel stack level. Perhaps it is only visible at the level of ASP.NET (at a layer beneath WCF)? In short, does anyone have any further insight on if and how this information is accessible? I must qualify that this "size" data will be collected in a production environment, as part of regular business logic calls. This question is related to my earlier bandwidth question.

For the past two months, i have been researching on types of programming, i found my interest in desktop programming, and also found this subjects (discrete maths, logic, algorithms, data structures, artificial intelligence, simulation) said to be a most known (subjects). Well as a beginner, i have no understanding on what type of language or books that can cover all these subjects, or even how to write any code. • Grand Central Strategy for Opening Multiple Files

  I have a working implementation using Grand Central dispatch queues that (1) opens a file and computes an OpenSSL DSA hash on "queue1", (2) writing out the hash to a new "side car" file for later verification on "queue2". I would like to open multiple files at the same time, but based on some logic that doesn't "choke" the OS by having 100s of files open and exceeding the hard drive's sustainable output. Photo browsing applications such as iPhoto or Aperture seem to open multiple files and display them, so I'm assuming this can be done. I'm assuming the biggest limitation will be disk I/O, as the application can (in theory) read and write multiple files simultaneously. Any suggestions? TIA

  In formal specifications based on abstract algebraic types and equational theory you use formulas of equational theory to specify theory. System which will satisfy those constraints is called in formal logic a model. Modeling is process of creating a model, which abstracts of some aspects, which are unnecessary details for a specific case. So concrete system has to adhere to created model in observed aspects. Programming is a process of creating a program which will have specific behaviour - will perform specific algorithms - and programming languages through different paradigms enable us to think in a certain specific way, which abstracts of some details, usually machine specific ones. So could we be doing all those things at the same time, because they are principially the same? Is declarative programming the nearest attempt to do that? Could we use some sort f programming languages which will be good for programming as well as for modeling and specification?

• How to add Transactions with a DataSet created using the Add Connection Wizard?

  I have a DataSet that I have added to my project where I can Insert and Add records using the Add Query function in Visual Studio 2010, however I want to add transactions to this, I have found a few examples but cannot seem to find one that works with these. I know I need to use the SQLClient.SQLTransaction Class somehow. I used the Add New Data Source Wizard and added the Tables/View/Functions I need, I just need an example using this process such as How to get the DataConnection my DataSet has used. Assuming all options have been set in the wizard and I am only using the pre-defined adapters and options asked for in this wizard, how to I add the Transaction logic to my Database. For example I have a DataSet called ProductDataSet with the XSD created for this, I have then added my Stock table as a Datasource and Added an AddStock method with a wizard, this also if a new item calls an AddItem method, if either of these fails I want to rollback the AddItem and AddStock in this case.

• Assembly wide multicast attributes. Are they evil?

  I am working on a project where we have several attributes in AssemblyInfo.cs, that are being multicast to a methods of a particular class. [assembly: Repeatable( AspectPriority = 2, AttributeTargetAssemblies = "MyNamespace", AttributeTargetTypes = "MyNamespace.MyClass", AttributeTargetMemberAttributes = MulticastAttributes.Public, AttributeTargetMembers = "*Impl", Prefix = "Cls")] What I don't like about this, is that it puts a piece of login into AssemblyInfo (Info, mind you!), which for starters should not contain any logic at all. The worst part of it, is that the actual MyClass.cs does not have the attribute anywhere in the file, and it is completely unclear that methods of this class might have them. From my perspective it greatly hurts readability of the code (not to mention that overuse of PostSharp can make debugging a nightmare). Especially when you have multiple multicast attributes. What is the best practice here? Is anyone out there is using PostSharp attributes like this?

• ActiveRecord Save Dependent Model

  I am trying to save a model with it's dependency models being saved. Model1 has_many :model2, :autosave => true Model2 belongs_to :model1 has_many :model3, :autosave => true Model3 belongs_to :model2 I want to save Model1, and have Model2 and 3 save as well. I tried this without and with the autosave feature. What winds up happening is Model1 is saved, Model2 is saved, Model3 is untouched. Is there a way to tell ActiveRecord that for this save I want to save the model and all child models all at once? As a side note, all 3 are just created and are not in the database. I cannot do .create on the models because I cannot save them until all validation passes and all business logic succeeds (has to be a transaction).

• SSIS Script Component Testing Strategy

  This question is in respect to the script component specifically. I am aware of ssisUnit etc… With simple SSIS Scripts Components, it’s sufficient to let basic testing flesh out issues, however I am working with a script that has grown in complexity over time. To better test the functionality I am considering abstracting the script logic into a DLL that gets deployed with the package, and then use the custom component in the script. The advantage is that the function will be more testable etc but it’s one more deployment artefact that needs to be managed. My question is, does anyone know of a better way to test such an SSIS script in a more isolated manner than to run the whole package and examine the output?

  I have the following class public class Person { private IList<Person> _children; public IEnumerable<Person> Children { get; } public void AddChild(Person child) { // Some business logic and adding to the internal list } } What changes would I have to make for NHibenrate to be able to persist the Child collection (apart from making everything virtual, I know that one). Do I have to add a setter to the children property which does something like a _children.Clear(); _children.AddRange(value). Currently the model expresses my intent quite nicely but I'm not sure how much alteration is need for NH to be able to help me out with persistence.

  I've been doing a massive code review and one pattern I notice all over the place is this: public bool MethodName() { bool returnValue = false; if (expression) { // do something returnValue = MethodCall(); } else { // do something else returnValue = Expression; } return returnValue; } This is not how I would have done this I would have just returned the value when I knew what it was. which of these two patterns is more correct? I stress that the logic always seems to be structured such that the return value is assigned in one plave only and no code is executed after it's assigned.

• Clojure: Testing every value from map operation for truth

  How can I test that every value in the collection returned by map is true? I am using the following: (defn test [f coll] (every? #(identity %) (map f coll))) with the anonymous function #(identity %), but I was wondering if there is a better way. I cannot use (apply and ...) because and is a macro. UPDATE: BTW, I am making my way through The Haskell Road to Logic, Maths, and Programming, by Kees Doets and Jan can Eijck, but doing the exercises in Clojure. It's a very interesting book.

• Managing Strategy objects with Hibernate & Spring

  This is a design question better explained with a Stack Overflow analogy: Users can earn Badges. Users, Badges and Earned Badges are stored in the database. A Badge’s logic is run by a Badge Condition Strategy. I would prefer not to have to store Badge Condition Strategies in the database, because they are complex tree structure objects. How do I associate a Badge stored in the database with its Badge Condition Strategy? I can only think of workaround solutions. For example: create 1 class per badge and use a SINGLE_TABLE inheritance strategy. Or get the badge from the database, and then programmatically lookup and inject the correct Badge Condition Strategy. Thanks for suggesting a better design.

• Constrain generic extension method to base types and string

  I want to have an extension method for XElement/XAttribute that allows me to apply a "ValueOrDefault" logic - perhaps with various slightly different implementations: ValueOrNull, ValueOrDefault, NumericValueOrDefault (which validates if the value is numeric), but I want to constrain these methods so that they can only work with ValueTypes or String (i.e. it does not really make sense to use any other reference types. Is it possible to do this with one implementation of each method, or will I have to have one where the constraint is "Structure" and one where the constraint is "String" - if I combine Structure and String in the generic constraint, I get the error : 'Structure' constraint and a specific class type constraint cannot be combined. • dojox.widget.dialog: disable close button opacity animation

  I am nearly happy with my dialog widget now, only that there is a built-in behavior of the close button fading in and out with mouseover/out interaction. I have found no way to disable this feature such that the close button remains at full opacity anytime the dialog is open. Here's roughly the code I'm working from: var d = new dojox.widget.Dialog({modal:true,sizeMethod:"chain",closable:true}); d.startup(); d.attr('content', /*html content*/); d.attr('dimensions',[/*width*/, /*height*/ ]).show(); There's much logic that I'm omitting here for brevity, but this should be all that is specifically pertinent to the way I am constructing the dialog.   Im trying to make a simple survey in php I have a set of radio buttons on a page called sja.php that sends its to sjamail.php page the problem is that when i go to get $answer = $_POST['ans']; I can't seen to do anything like echo "$answer"; but if i were to throw some logic at it like if ($answer == "ans1") { echo 'Correct'; } else { echo 'Incorrect'; } IT will display correct or incorrect so why is it i can't access the value of the radio button ans?

  It could be part of the model because it's part of the business logic of the game. It could be part of the controller because it could be seen as simulating player input, which would be considered part of the controller, right? Or would it? What about a normal enemy, like a goomba in Mario? UPDATE: Wow, that's really not the answer I was expecting. As far as I could tell, A.I. is an internal part of the autonomous game system, hence model. I'm still not convinced.

  (Followup to this question) After surviving the first wave of incoming shipments (9 hours of copy/paste), I now believe I have all the requirements. Here is the updated workflow: Monkey collects email attachments (4 Excel spreadsheets, 1 PDF) Monkey creates central database, does complex calculations (right now this is also an Excel spreadsheet) Monkey sends data to two bosses, who set the retail prices independently; first one to reply wins Monkey sends order form to our other warehouses, also Excel Monkey sends spreadsheets to VIP customers, carefully sanitized and formatted (4 different discount categories) Jurily enters the data into the accounting system. I've given up on automating this part, there's too much business logic involved, and the database is a pile of sh^W legacy My question: What technologies would you use for a quick and dirty solution? I'm mostly sold on C#, but coming from a Linux/C++ background, I'm horribly confused about my choices in Microsoft-land. For bonus points: How would you redesign the whole system from the ground up? P.S. in case you were wondering, my job title is System Administrator.

  hi, i need help modelling a use case diagram from a topic, it will be in java GUI Design a Calculator that 1.Allow user to key in a legitimate arithmetic statement that involves number, operator +, - and bracket '(' and ')' ; 2.When user press “Calculate” button, display result; 3.Some legitimate statement would be ((3+2)-4+2) (equals 3) and (-2+3)-(3-1) (equals -1); 4.You should NOT use a pre-existing function that just take in the statement as a parameter and returns the result but you should write the logic of parsing every character in your code. 5.Store the last statement and answer so it is displayed when user press the “Last calculation” button. i have designed two use case diagrams using UML on netbeans 6.5.1, one of the use case i am not sure whether is it containing too much use cases etc, while the other is what i think could be too vague for the topic.i hope to get some feedback on whether the use case diagram are appropriate, thanks.

  Hi all, I am new to Entity Framework and please pardon my ignorance. We have a simple application written using SQL Server and ADO.Net. Now we have got a new requirement that, whenever a particular rows get updated by our application, some business logic has to happen. I have been looking into Triggers in SQL server and it looks like we can do it using triggers. I am also looking at Entity Framework's OnPropertyChange capability. Is it possible to do it with "OnPropertyChange"? I mean, Can I create a model and implement "OnPropertyChange" method? And when our application modifies the rows using ADO.Net, then will it fire "OnPropertyChange" event so that my custome code in "OnPropertyChange" excutes?
