• What do I do about a Java program that spawned two instaces of itself?

  I have a java JAR file that is triggered by a SQL server job. It's been running successfully for months. The process pulls in a structured flat file to a staging database then pushes that data into an XML file. However yesterday the process was triggered twice at the same time. I can tell from a log file that gets created, it looks like the process ran twice simultaneously. This caused a lot of issues and the XML file that it kicked out was malformed and contained duplicate nodes etc. My question is, is this a known issue with Java JVM's spawning multiple instances of itself? Or should I be looking at sql server as the culprit? I'm looking into 'socket locking' or file locking to prevent multiple instances in the future. This is the first instance of this issue that I've ever heard of. More info: The job is scheduled to run every minute. The job triggers a .bat file that contains the java.exe - jar filename.jar The java program runs, scans a directory for a file and then executes a loop to process if the file if it finds one. After it processes the file it runs another loop that kicks out XML messages. I can provide code samples if that would help. Thank you, Kevin

• MySQL Query, Date Range From "Blacklist"

  I have 2 databases. One is properties and the other is dates. In dates I have associated the land_id and a date (In YYYYMMDD format) which means that the date is not available. I need to formulate a query that a user can specify a start and end date, and then choose a property for which dates are available (not in the date database). How do airline and hotel websites do this kind of logic? I was thinking about taking the date range and picking all days in between and doing a query where the dates do not match and ordering it by number of results, but I can see how that could easily turn into an intense query. • Where do you use Java code? Trouble sending .jar files

  Apologies for the generic nature of this question. I have been learning Java for a few months now, and I've created a few simple projects which have some functionality. I wanted to send the projects to a friend and I'm running into countless errors and struggles. Passing a .jar file is causing "Main class not found" errors when they try to open it. I tried using third party software to wrap the .jar files into an .exe file and the same errors still persist. Beyond that, I'm convinced that passing around .jar files wrapped into .exe files via third party software is NOT how Java was intended to be used. I've read two books on Java and they all talk about structuring the language, but I'm confused about WHERE I'm supposed to be using this code because it has become painfully obvious that it is NOT intended to be passed around in file format. Is this a server programming language? Used on the back end of websites mainly? I'm not sure where one would be using the code written in Java.

• Windows batch/script code to conditionally process based on date value in text file

  I am using Windows XP. The code can be used in a batch file or vbs script. I intend to use Windows scheduler to run the program. I need code to read a date from a text file (could be the only line in the text file or the date could be included in the filename, I control the process that generates the file) The code would then need to evaluate the text file date against the current date to confirm that the text file date is from the prior month. I'm starting to build a process to be able to run 1st-of-the-month jobs once the monthly data has been refreshed. I'm new to building this kind of process using batch/script files.   In window, i can get the date created of the video from properties(right click). I have a few idea on this but i dont know how to do it. 1. Get the video information directly from video(like in windows), 2. By extracting the video name to get the date created(The video's name is in date format, which is the time it created).   Greetings. I am querying tables from Microsoft SQL 2008 which have date split across 3 columns: day, month and year. Unfortunately, I do not have control over this because data is coming in to the database daily from a 3rd party source in that format. I need to add between to a where clause so user can pull records within a range. Would be easy enough if date was in a single column but finding it nearly impossible when its split across three columns. To display the date, I am doing a CAST( CAST(year as varchar(4)) + '-' + CAST(month as varchar(2)) + '-' + CAST(day as varchar(2)) as date) AS "date"` in a select. I tried to put it as a parameter for datediff function or just the regular between but get no results. Thanks for any help.

• Keeping socket open to send files on timer calls?

  I'm writing a program that requires an image to be fetched from a remote server every 10 milliseconds or so, as that's how often the image is updated. My current method calls a timer to grab the image, but it encounters Socket Closed errors all the time, and sometimes does not work at all. How can I fix my methods to keep the socket open the whole time, so no reconnecting is needed?   Hello SO! I am working on a small project and am playing with date() and mktime() in PHP. Compare the two code blocks and their output, notice the second sample adds one to the month in it's first mktime. $monthis = 5; echo date('F', mktime(0,0,0,$monthis,0,0)) . " 1, 2010 is on a " . date("l F", mktime(0, 0, 0, $monthis, 1, 2010)); puts out April 1, 2010 is on a Saturday May but if I change it to $monthis = 5; echo date('F', mktime(0,0,0,$monthis + 1,0,0)) . " 1, 2010 is on a " . date("l F", mktime(0, 0, 0, $monthis, 1, 2010)); puts out May 1, 2010 is on a Saturday May Why do I have to add one to the month in the first mktime so that both emit the same month? • Java vs. C variant for desktop and tablet development

  I am going to write a desktop application, but I am conflicted concerning which language to use. It (the desktop application) will need to have a good GUI, and to be extendable (hopefully good with modules of some sort). It must be completely cross-platform, including executable in various tablet environments. I put this as a requirement while realizing that some modification will no doubt be necessary. The language should also have some form of networking tools available. I have read http://introcs.cs.princeton.edu/java/faq/c2java.html and understand the differences between Java and C very well. I am looking not necessarily at C, but more at a C variant. If it is a complete toss-up, I will use Java as I know Java much better. However, I do not want to use a language that will be inferior for the task I wish to accomplish. Thank you for all suggestions and explanations. • Recommendation for robust, customizable, open source, Java servlet-based forum software?

  There is a lot of forum software out there, but it seems to me that a lot of the popular choices are PHP-based. And for my project, I'd like something based on Java servlets so my team can make customizations to it. Another important feature is that I can completely change the pages to hide unwanted elements without too much work. So I'm looking either for a template system or easily editable scripts (i.e. JSPs) that have a clean view separation. Just having skin changes or CSS customization is not enough. I understand that if I have open source, I can change anything I want, but my point is that it should be easy and not requiring mastery of a complex code base. Finally, I want something that has been around for at least a year and deployed on some high-traffic sites. Clustering support (one database, multiple web servers) is highly desirable. Up-time is crucial since I have an SLA to support. What do you think?

• Gnome 3 - Unable to change date and time

  I am running Arch Linux with Gnome 3. Unfortunately, although my time and date settings in /etc/rc.conf show that HARDWARECLOCK='UTC' and TIMEZONE='America/LosAngeles'. I continue to get the timezone of Europe/London. If I try to change the date and time via the GUI. It requires root access. After authorizing root access, the date and time may be changed; however, after closing the GUI window, it automatically reverts back to the previous incorrect timezone. I am able to use pool.ntp.org in order to sync my time to the correct one; however, this works only for the current session and is not fixed. This solution is inconvenient since there is not always network access. What other solutions are available for this problem?

  I need help with either a formula or a macro to help automate a grade sheets dates. We have class every monday or wednesday only. I would like to vlookup from a input table of each quarters date range (example Sept. 10 - Oct 24 and the code auto insert the date of every monday and wednesday in a row at the top of my grade sheet. Every year I use the same excel workbook I built to average and rate the grading with no problem, however i can't seem to get this one right. Any help would be greatly appreciated.   I am making an Excel 2010 spreadsheet to log support calls, services, and installations that each member would fill out. Due to being paid by job rather than by hour, there is a need for it to count each of these ("Call", "Service", "Install") there is in any given time span. The entry of the data itself would be in Sheet 1, and then a 'splash screen' of sorts would be in Sheet 2. Here I would like to be able to put a date range and it would display how many of each there is. I already can do the COUNTIF statement, =COUNTIF(Activity!$B:$B,"Call") but I don't know how to: a) Add in the prerequisite for a date so it only gets "Calls" within a certain time frame. b) Take the date it looks for from a cell on the splash screen.

• Adopt-a-JSR for Java EE 7 - Getting Started

  Adopt-a-JSR is an initiative started by JUG leaders to encourage JUG members to get involved in a JSR, in order to increase grass roots participation. This allows JUG members to provide early feedback to specifications before they are finalized in the JCP. The standards in turn become more complete and developer-friendly after getting feedback from a wide variety of audience. adoptajsr.org provide more details about the logistics and benefits for you and your JUG. A similar activity was conducted for OpenJDK as well. Markus Eisele also provide a great introduction to the program (in German). Java EE 7 (JSR 342) is scheduled to go final in Q2 2013. There are several new JSRs that are getting included in the platform (e.g. WebSocket, JSON, and Batch), a few existing ones are getting an overhaul (e.g. JAX-RS 2 and JMS 2), and several other getting minor updates (e.g. JPA 2.1 and Servlets 3.1). Each Java EE 7 JSR can leverage your expertise and would love your JUG to adopt a JSR. What does it mean to adopt a JSR ? Your JUG is going to identify a particular JSR, or multiple JSRs, that is of interest to the JUG members. This is mostly done by polling/discussing on your local JUG members list. Your JUG will download and review the specification(s) and javadocs for clarity and completeness. The complete set of Java EE 7 specifications, their download links, and EG archives are listed here. glassfish.org/adoptajsr provide specific areas where different specification leads are looking for feedback. Your JUG can then think of a sample application that can be built using the chosen specification(s). An existing use case (from work or a personal hobby project) may be chosen to be implemented instead. This is where your creativity and uniqueness comes into play. Most of the implementations are already integrated in GlassFish 4 and others will be integrated soon. You can also explore integration of multiple technologies and provide feedback on the simplicity and ease-of-use of the programming model. Especially look for integration with existing Java EE technologies and see if you find any discrepancies. Report any missing features that may be included in future release of the specification. The most important part is to provide feedback by filing bugs on the corresponding spec or RI project. Any thing that is not clear either in the spec or implementation should be filed as a bug. This is what will ensure that specification and implementation leads are getting the required feedback and improving the quality of the final deliverable of the JSR. How do I get started ? A simple way to get started can be achieved by following S.M.A.R.T. as explained below. Specific Identify who all will be involved ? What would you like to accomplish ? For example, even though building a sample app will provide real-world validity of the API but because of time constraints you may identify that reviewing the specification and javadocs only can be accomplished. Establish a time frame by which the activities need to be complete. Measurable Define a success for metrics. For example, this could be the number of bugs filed. Remember, quality of bugs is more important that quantity of bugs. Define your end goal, for example, reviewing 4 chapters of the specification or completing the sample application. Create a dashboard that will highlight your JUG's contribution to this effort. Attainable Make sure JUG members understand the time commitment required for providing feedback. This can vary based upon the level of involvement (any is good!) and the number of specifications picked. adoptajsr.org defines different categories of involvement. Once again, any level of involvement is good. Just reviewing a chapter, a section, or javadocs for your usecase is helpful. Relevant Pick JSRs that JUG members are willing and able to work. If the JUG members are not interested then they might loose motivation half-way through. The "able" part is tricky as you can always stretch yourself and learn a new skill ;-) Time-bound Define a time table of activities with clearly defined tasks. A tentative time table may look like: Dec 25: Discuss and agree upon the specifications with JUG Jan 1: Start Adopt-a-JSR for Java EE 7 Jan 15: Initial spec reading complete. Keep thinking through the application that will be implemented. Jan 22: Early design of the sample application is ready Jan 29: JUG members agree upon the application Next 4 weeks: Implement the application Of course, you'll need to alter this based upon your commitment. Maintaining an activity dashboard will help you monitor and track the progress. Make sure to keep filing bugs through out the process! 12 JUGs from around the world (SouJava, Campinas JUG, Chennai JUG, London Java Community, BeJUG, Morocco JUG, Peru JUG, Indonesia JUG, Congo JUG, Silicon Valley JUG, Madrid JUG, and Houston JUG) have already adopted one of the Java EE 7 JSRs. Really powerful since I didn't need to change the sources (or even look at the sources) of the Java editor to add the "Visualizer" tab to it, as shown below: Right now, the tab doesn't show anything, that will come in the next blog entry.   I'm using Hibernate 4.0.1.Final. Is it possible to access an object's fields if that object has been loaded via the org.hibernate.Session.load(Class clazz, Serializable id) method and there is no active session?
