• Changing how a telerik radgrid marks a row as "modified"

  I am working with the Telerik Winforms Radgrid version 2009.2.9.701 in visual studio 2008 (C#) and I've come across and issue I can't seem to find a solution for. When the radgrid is populated and the user changes a cell within a row, the row is not flagged as "modified" until the user actually clicks onto another location on the datagrid. If the user modifies any values in a row and immediately clicks the "Save" button on my winform, the row is not flagged as having been modified and is not showing up in my list of modified rows. I am using the following code to gather the modified rows ... DataTable modifiedRows = dataTable.GetChanges(DataRowState.Modified); My question is as follows: Is there a way to mark a row as "Modified" when the user changes a value in ANY cell in the row, without the user having to click off of the row before clicking the save button. I can't seem to find the flag that marks a data row as "Modified". Thank you for your help, it is much appreciated.

As an up-and-coming developer with so much to learn, I am grateful for each and every one of their patient contributions. • Processing a tab delimited file with shell script processing

  Hello, normally I would use Python/Perl for this procedure but I find myself (for political reasons) having to pull this off using a bash shell. I have a large tab delimited file that contains six columns and the second column is integers. I need to shell script a solution that would verify that the file indeed is six columns and that the second column is indeed integers. I am assuming that I would need to use sed/awk here somewhere. Problem is that I'm not that familiar with sed/awk. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks! Lilly

• Silverlight local storage

  As you may know Silverlight has support for local storage. We are looking at creating Sl application that will work in off line mode. This application may require quite a bit of data to be cached on the client side. Obvious solution - use local storage with some sort of XMl based structure won't work as our PoC showed due to performance issues. We are looking at several 3rd party solutions that implement light database engines on top of SL local storage. If you have solved this problem in the past or have any ideas - I would appreciate some pointers and ideas.

  I have an website where people can place a vote like this: http://mysite.com/vote/25 This will place a vote on item 25. I want to only make this available for registered users, and only if they want to do this. Now I know when someone is busy on the website, and someone gives them a link like this: http://mysite.com/vote/30 then the vote will be places for him on the item without him wanting to do this. I have read the explanation on the OWASP website, but i don't really understand it Is this an example of CSFR, and how can I prevent this. The best thing i can think off is adding something to the link like a hash. But this will be quite irritating to put something on the end of all the links. Is there no other way of doing this. Another thing can someone maybe give me some other example of this, because the website seems fairly fugue to me.

• Algorithms for City Simulation?

  I want to create a city filled with virtual creatures. Say like Sim City, where each creature walks around, doing it's own tasks. I'd prefer the city to not 'explode' or do weird things -- like the population dies off, or the population leaves, or any other unexpected crap. Is there a set of basic rules I can encode each agent with so that the city will be 'stable'? (Much like how for physics simulations, we have some basic rules that govern everything; is there a set of rules that governs how a simulation of a virtual city will be stable?) I'm new to this area and have no idea what algorithms/books to look into. Insights deeply appreciated. Thanks!

• Is Objective C fast enough for DSP/audio programming

  I've been making some progress with audio programming for iPhone. Now I'm doing some performance tuning, trying to see if I can squeeze more out of this little machine. Running Shark, I see that a significant part of my cpu power (16%) is getting eaten up by objc_msgSend. I understand I can speed this up somewhat by storing pointers to functions (IMP) rather than calling them using [object message] notation. But if I'm going to go through all this trouble, I wonder if I might just be better off using C++. Any thoughts on this?

• Delphi 2010 Error Insight incorrectly flags "Undeclared Identifier"

  In D2010, Error Insight is incorrectly underlining in red types like "TOpenDialog" (even though my unit and project's uses both include Dialogs). Also, in my method TMyFrame.Foo, it fails the same way by flagging a reference to a VCL component in my TMyFrame -- even though Foo and the component are both part of TMyFrame. SO suggested I read several threads on this subject. One mentions a D2009 fix for this. Is there a D2010 fix? Other postings have suggested that Error Insight yields too many false alarms and should just be turned off. Any suggestions?

  I have the code below to implement a dropdownlist with checkboxes. My problem is that every time i click a checkbox the dropdownlist closes and i need to reopen it to select more checkboxes. • Unix [Homework]: Get a list of /home/user/ directories in /etc/passwd

  I'm very new to Unix, and currently taking a class learning the basics of the system and its commands. I'm looking for a single command line to list off all of the user home directories in alphabetical order from the /etc/passwd directory. This applies only to the home directories, and not the contents within them. There should be no duplicate entries. I've tried many permutations of commands such as the following: sort -d | find /etc/passwd /home/* -type -d | uniq | less I've tried using -path, -name, removing -type, using -prune, and changing the search pattern to things like /home/*/$, but haven't gotten good results once. At best I can get a list of my own directory (complete with every directory inside it, which is bad), and the directories of the other students on the server (without the contained directories, which is good). I just can't get it to display the /home/user directories and nothing else for my own account. Many thanks in advance.

  Does any one know how I would have to change the following to work with ms sql? WHERE registrationDate between to_date ('2003/01/01', 'yyyy/mm/dd') AND to_date ('2003/12/31', 'yyyy/mm/dd'); What I have read implies I would have to construct it using DATEPART() which could become very long winded. Especially when the goal would be to compare on dates which I receive in the following format "2003-12-30 10:07:42". It would be nice to pass them off to the database as is. Any pointers appreciated.

• installing visual studio 2005 after 2008 already installed

  I have a machine with VS 2008/Sql 2008 already installed. I now need to install an instance of vs 2005/Sql 2005 for two reasons. The main reason is for reporting Services 2005. All of the report servers are sql 2005. Now to create a SSRS compatible with 2005 do I just need to install Sql Server 2005 and work with it in VS 2008 or do I also need to install VS 2005. The second reason is the off-site team that I am consulting with do not want the project upgraded yet. So without rebuilding the whole box is there a safe way to install VS 2005 on a box that already contains 2008? Same question for Sql Server 2005? Thanks

• WPF DataGrid: How to reset column width when applying new ItemsSource

  I am using a DataGrid to display details of an item selected in a ListBox. The DataGrid has 3 columns set to Width="Auto". As different items in the ListBox are selected, the width of the columns in the DataGrid increase as needed in order to display the text. What I want is that the column widths also decrease when the extra width is not needed. An example. Column 1 normally contains a percent value. However, in some cases it contains a long error message which causes column 1 to widen and push columns 2 & 3 off the screen. When I switch to an item containing normal values, I want column 1 to regain its' normal width and for columns 2 & 3 to be visible again. What can I do to force the column widths to take the minimum size?

Often strings such as "hello world" end up as "helloworld" after tidying. • Setting a WebControls TabIndex based on the ControlId of another control

  I have an ASP.NET Webforms site that is regularly having features added. The majority of time a new WebControl is added to the page and I need to increment the TabIndex to all subsequent controls on the page. I'd prefer a more robust solution than choosing an arbitrary gap between the initial assigned tab indexes. Setting the tab indexes using the designer tab order functionality is one option but I'd prefer to stay in the source view. Ideally, if I had three check boxes I'd like to be able to define the tabindex based off the previous controls tabindex.   I have a username textbox on a form, that has a few validation rules applied to it via the DataAnnotation attributes: [Required(ErrorMessage = "FTP login is required")] [StringLength(15, ErrorMessage = "Must be 15 characters or fewer")] [RegularExpression(@"[a-zA-Z0-9]*", ErrorMessage = "Alpha-numeric characters only")] public string FtpLogin { get; set; } I also have a button next to this text box, that fires off a jQuery ajax request that checks for the existence of the username as follows: <button onclick="check(this);return false;" id="FtpLoginCheck" name="FtpLoginCheck">Available?</button> I'm looking for a way of tieing the two together, so that the client-side validation is performed before the call to the "check(this)" in the onclick event. Edit: To be more clear, I need a way to inspect or trigger the client-side validation result of the textbox, when I click the unrelated button beside it. Edit: I now have the button JS checking for $("form").validate().invalid, but not displaying the usual validation messages. Almost there Any ideas?

• Android: Strange out of memory issue

  I am not sure where to start to explain this one. I have a list view with a couple image buttons on each row. When you click the list row, it launches a new activity. If you review some of my other posts, I have had to build my own tabs because of an issue w/ the camera layout. The activity that gets launched for result is a map. If I click on my button to launch the image preview (load an image off the sd card) the application returns from the activity back to the listview activity to the result handler to relaunch my new activity which is nothing more than an image widget. So here is the issue, the image preview on the list view is being done w/ the cursor & listadapter. This makes it pretty simple, but I am not sure how I can put a resized (i.e. smaller bit size not pixel) image as the src for the imgbutton on the fly. So I just resized the image that came off the phone camera. The issue is that I get an out of memory error when it tries to go back and re-launch the 2nd activity. ** My question : is there a way I can build the list adapter easily row by row, where I can resize on the fly (bit wise)? - this would be preferable as I also need to make some changes to the properties of the widgets/elements in each row as I am unable to select a row w/ touch screen b/c of focus issue. (I can use roller ball). ** I know I can do an out of band resize and save of my image, but that is not really what I want to do, but some sample code for that would be nice if that is your suggestion. As soon as I disabled the image on the listview it worked fine again. • UIScrollView subviews not showing at first

  I created a custom UIScrollView subclass that works a like a UITableView, keeping a collection of subviews and re-using them whenever the user scrolls. It's implemented like this: -(void)layoutSubviews { for(UIView *subview in [self subviews]) [subview removeFromSuperview]; // then re-add subviews after changing the frame and some attributes } This works fine with simple UIViews, but when I try to do it with a UIView that has a UILabel subview, the "base" view appears fine, but the UILabel doesn't show up at all. I can get the UILabel to show up by scrolling the entire UIView off screen and then bringing it back on. What could be causing this? So far, I've tried calling [myUIView setNeedsLayout], [myUIView setNeedsDisplay], and [myUIView layoutIfNeeded] from various places. None of them worked, and the last one crashed my app. I've also done the same thing to myUIScrollViewSubclass, with similar results.

• Breakpoints not working in Delphi 6 DirectShow source filter

  I'm trying to debug my DirectShow source filter. I'm using Delphi Pro 6 on Windows XP along with the DSPACK component library. I'm using Skype as my host application, which I set in the Parameters option in the Run menu, for testing my source filter DLL (ax file extension). Skype runs fine and I see a stream of my OutputDebugString messages in the Event Viewer, but none of my breakpoints are ever hit. In my Project Settings I have optimizations off, stack frames on, debug DCUs on, Range Checking on, and Overflow checking on. Each time I modify my code and run a test I: Do a full build Unregister the DirectShow filter (regsvr32 /u) Register the DirectShow filter (regsvr32) Run Skype as my Host application from the IDE When an Exception occurs, the IDE does trap it and pops up an error dialog box with the option to view the assembler code in the CPU window. However none of my breakpoints are being hit. Can anyone tell me how to get breakpoints working? Thanks.

• Building a jQuery Plug-in to make an HTML Table scrollable

  Today I got a call from a customer and we were looking over an older application that uses a lot of tables to display financial and other assorted data. The application is mostly meta-data driven with lots of layout formatting automatically driven through meta data rather than through explicit hand coded HTML layouts. One of the problems in this apps are tables that display a non-fixed amount of data. The users of this app don't want to use paging to see more data, but instead want to display overflow data using a scrollbar. Many of the forms are very densely populated, often with multiple data tables that display a few rows of data in the UI at the most. This sort of layout does not lend itself well to paging, but works much better with scrollable data. Unfortunately scrollable tables are not easily created. HTML Tables are mangy beasts as anybody who's done any sort of Web development knows. Tables are finicky when it comes to styling and layout, and they have many funky quirks, especially when it comes to scrolling both of the table rows themselves or even the child columns. There's no built-in way to make tables scroll and to lock headers while you do, and while you can embed a table (or anything really) into a scrolling div with something like this: <div style="position:relative; overflow: hidden; overflow-y: scroll; height: 200px; width: 400px;"> <table id="table" style="width: 100%" class="blackborder" > <thead> <tr class="gridheader"> <th>Column 1</th> <th>Column 2</th> <th>Column 3</th> <th >Column 4</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>Column 1 Content</td> <td>Column 2 Content</td> <td>Column 3 Content</td> <td>Column 4 Content</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Column 1 Content</td> <td>Column 2 Content</td> <td>Column 3 Content</td> <td>Column 4 Content</td> </tr> … </tbody> </table> </div> </div> that won't give a very satisfying visual experience: Both the header and body scroll which looks odd. You lose context as soon as the header scrolls off the top and when you reach the bottom of the list the bottom outline of the table shows which also looks off. The the side bar shows all the way down the length of the table yet another visual miscue. In a pinch this will work, but it's ugly. What's out there? Before we go further here you should know that there are a few capable grid plug-ins out there already. Among them: Flexigrid (can work of any table as well as with AJAX data) jQuery Scrollable Table Plug-in (feature similar to what I need but not quite) jqGrid (mostly an Ajax Grid which is very powerful and works very well) But in the end none of them fit the bill of what I needed in this situation. All of these require custom CSS and some of them are fairly complex to restyle. Others are AJAX only or work better with AJAX loaded data. However, I need to actually try (as much as possible) to maintain the original styling of the tables without requiring extensive re-styling. Building the makeTableScrollable() Plug-in To make a table scrollable requires rearranging the table a bit. In the plug-in I built I create two <div> tags and split the table into two: one for the table header and one for the table body. The bottom <div> tag then contains only the table's row data and can be scrolled while the header stays fixed. Using jQuery the basic idea is pretty simple: You create the divs, copy the original table into the bottom, then clone the table, clear all content append the <thead> section, into new table and then copy that table into the second header <div>. Easy as pie, right? Unfortunately it's a bit more complicated than that as it's tricky to get the width of the table right to account for the scrollbar (by adding a small column) and making sure the borders properly line up for the two tables. A lot of style settings have to be made to ensure the table is a fixed size, to remove and reattach borders, to add extra space to allow for the scrollbar and so forth. The end result of my plug-in is a table with a scrollbar. The height of the outside wrapper container. Defaults to 200px. rightPadding The padding that is added to the right of the table to account for the scrollbar. Creates a column of this width and injects it into the table. If too small the rightmost column might get truncated. if too large the empty column might show. cssClass The CSS class of the wrapping container that appears to wrap the table. If you want a border around your table this class should probably provide it since the plug-in removes the table border. The rest of the code is obtuse, but pretty straight forward. It starts by creating a new column in the table to accommodate the width of the scrollbar and avoid clipping of text in the rightmost column. The width of the columns is explicitly set in the header elements to force the size of the table to be fixed and to provide the same sizing when the THEAD section is moved to a new copied table later. The table wrapper div is created, formatted and the table is moved into it. The new wrapper div is cloned for the header wrapper and configured. Finally the actual table is cloned and cleared of all elements. The original table's THEAD section is then moved into the new table. At last the new table is added to the header <div>, and the header <div> is inserted before the table wrapper <div>. I'm always amazed how easy jQuery makes it to do this sort of re-arranging, and given of what's happening the amount of code is rather small. Disclaimer: Your mileage may vary A word of warning: I make no guarantees about the code above. It's a first cut and I provided this here mainly to demonstrate the concepts of decomposing and reassembling an HTML layout :-) which jQuery makes so nice and easy. I tested this component against the typical scenarios we plan on using it for which are tables that use a few well known styles (or no styling at all). I suspect if you have complex styling on your <table> tag that things might not go so well. If you plan on using this plug-in you might want to minimize your styling of the table tag and defer any border formatting using the class passed in via the cssClass parameter, which ends up on the two wrapper div's that wrap the header and body rows. There's also no explicit support for footers. I rarely if ever use footers (when not using paging that is), so I didn't feel the need to add footer support. However, if you need that it's not difficult to add - the logic is the same as adding the header. The plug-in relies on a well-formatted table that has THEAD and TBODY sections along with TH tags in the header. Note that ASP.NET WebForm DataGrids and GridViews by default do not generate well-formatted table HTML. You can look at my Adding proper THEAD sections to a GridView post for more info on how to get a GridView to render properly. The plug-in has no dependencies other than jQuery. Even with the limitations in mind I hope this might be useful to some of you. I know I've already identified a number of places in my own existing applications where I will be plugging this in almost immediately. • threaded serial port IOException when writing

  Hi, I'm trying to write a small application that simply reads data from a socket, extracts some information (two integers) from the data and sends the extracted information off on a serial port. The idea is that it should start and just keep going. In short, it works, but not for long. After a consistently short period I start to receive IOExceptions and socket receive buffer is swamped. The thread framework has been taken from the MSDN serial port example. The delay in send(), readThread.Join(), is an effort to delay read() in order to allow serial port interrupt processing a chance to occur, but I think I've misinterpreted the join function. I either need to sync the processes more effectively or throw some data away as it comes in off the socket, which would be fine.   I'm teaching JEE, especially JPA, Spring and Spring MVC. As I have not so much experience in large projects, it is difficult to know what to present to students about optimisation of ORM. At the present time, I present some classic optimisation tricks: prepared statements (most of ORM implicitely uses it by default) first and second-level caches "write first, optimize later" it is possible to switch off ORM and send SQL commands directly to the database for very frequent, specialized and costly requests Is there any other point the community see about other way to optimize ORM ? I'm especially interested by DAO patterns...

• Client asked for internet radio on his website

  Hi guys, I have a freelance job for a php site. The client isn't a tech savy guy he says he would like to have internet radio on his website as well. Now the thing is that when we speak of internet radio what are we actually talking about? My client himself has no idea of what internet radio is aside form listening to streaming mp3s on a flash player embedded on a website. I don't think my client would be ready to set up a radio station or so.. I have to give my client a report on what can and cannot be done. So I'm looking for the simplest solution possible that would pass off as internet radio...
