• Database structure and source control - best practice

  Background I came from several years working in a company where all the database objects were stored in source control, one file per object. We had a list of all the objects that was maintained when new items were added (to allow us to have scripts run in order and handle dependencies) and a VB script that ran to create one big script for running against the database. All the tables were 'create if not exists' and all the SP's etc. were drop and recreate. Up to the present and I am now working in a place where the database is the master and there is no source control for DB objects, but we do use redgate's tools for updating our production database (SQL compare), which is very handy, and requires little work. Question How do you handle your DB objects? I like to have them under source control (and, as we're using GIT, I'd like to be able to handle merge conflicts in the scripts, rather than the DB), but I'm going to be pressed to get past the ease of using SQL compare to update the database. I don't really want to have us updating scripts in GIT and then using SQL compare to update the production database from our DEV DB, as I'd rather have 'one version of the truth', but I don't really want to get into re-writing a custom bit of software to bundle the whole lot of scripts together. I think that visual studio database edition may do something similar to this, but I'm not sure if we will have the budget for it. I'm sure that this has been asked to death, but I can't find anything that seems to quite have the answer I'm looking for.   I saw this question and recommendation from Django Projects here but still can't get this to work. My Django Admin pages are not displaying the CSS at all. • TFS: How to dectet changed files when loading a solution?

  I am new to TFS integration with Visual Studio 2010, and I have a problem I would like to solve. Practically, when I open a solution, how can I detect, looking only at the Solution Explorer which file has been changed since my last login? I am able to discover the changed files if I look at the Latest column of Source Control Explorer but it is not so intuitive. I attach you an image for better understanding. I would like to have a different icon, not the lock, for frmAbout.vb (in this case), associated to the item in Solution Explorer. Do you have any idea how can I achieve this behavior? Or some alternatives?

• How to use numpy with OpenBLAS instead of Atlas in Ubuntu?

  I have looked for an easy way to install/compile Numpy with OpenBLAS but didn't find an easy answer. All the documentation I have seen takes too much knowledge as granted for someone like me who is not used to compile software. There are two packages in Ubuntu related to OpenBLAS : libopenblas-base and libopenblas-dev. Once they are installed, what should I do to install Numpy again with them? Thanks! Note that when these OpenBLAS packages are installed, Numpy doesn't work anymore: it can't be imported: ImportError: /usr/lib/liblapack.so.3gf: undefined symbol: ATL_chemv. • Reading from compressed lucene index

  I created a lucene index and compressed the index directory with bz2 or zip. I donot want to uncompress it. Is there any API call that can read the index from this zipped directory and thus allow searching and other functionalities. That is, can lucence IndexReader read the index from a compressed file. I saw that Lucnene IndexReader does not support "Reader" to open the index, otherwise I would have created a Reader class that uncompresses the file and streams the uncompressed version. • I've Heard Global Variables Are Bad, What Alternative Solution Should I Use?

  I've read all over the place that global variables are bad and alternatives should be used. In Javascript specifically, what solution should I choose. I'm thinking of a function, that when fed two arguments (function globalVariables(Variable,Value)) looks if Variable exists in a local array and if it does set it's value to Value, else, Variable and Value are appended. If the function is called without arguments (function globalVariables()) it returns the array. Perhaps if the function is fired with just one argument (function globalVariables(Variable)) it returns the value of Variable in the array. What do you think? I'd like to hear your alternative solutions and arguments for using global variables.

  How can I implement a vtable COM interface in java? In the old days, I'd use the Microsft JVM, which had built in java-COM interop. What's the equivalent for a modern JRE? Answers to a similar SO question proposed JACOB. I've looked at JACOB, but that is based on IDispatch, and is aimed at controlling Automation serers. The COM interfaces I need are custom vtable (extend IUnknown), e.g. IPersistStream, IOleWindow, IContextMenu etc. For my use case, I could implement all the COM specifics in JNI, and have the JNI layer call corresponding interfaces in java. But I'm hoping for a less painful solution. It's for an open source project, so open source alternatives are preferred.

  UPDATE: I found that the reason for the previous error was an error in the documentation. The method should be named proxyForJson, not jsonProxyObject... But I'm still stuck, though. • How do I reduce number of redundant requests with mod_perl properly?

  In a fairly big legacy project, I've refactored several hairy modules into Moose classes. Each of these modules requires database access to (lazy) fetch its attributes. Since those objects are used pretty heavily, I want to reduce the number of redundant requests, for example for unchanged data. Now, how do I do that properly? I've got several alternatives: Implement caching in my Moose classes via a role to store them in memcached with expiration of 5-10 minutes (probably not too difficult, but tricky with lazy attributes) update: KiokuDB could probably help here, have to read up about attributes Migrate to DBIx::Class (needs to be done anyway) and implement caching on this level (DBIC will probably take most of the pain away just by itself) Somehow make my objects persist inside the mod_perl process (no clue how to do this :() How would you do this and what do you consider a sane way? Is caching data preferred on object or the ORM level?

  I'm getting a NullPointerException in a Nokia S40. I want to know what is causing this exception. The device shows: NullPointerException java/lang/NullPointerException This error only occurs in the device, running in the emulator the application works fine. I use microlog to debug my application. But the application works fine if the log is enabled. Is there a way to get the stack trace when I get this NullPointerException? I don't need all details like the line number just which method cause this exception. UPDATE: I installed the same application in another Nokia S40 and the same error didn't occur. • How to manage test fixtures for end-to-end testing?

  Having just set up a test framework for a new web application, I realized I missed one of the big questions: "How do I make tests independent from each other?" Years ago I have set up some complicated Ant scripting to do full cycles of deleting all database tables, creating the schema again, adding test data, starting the application, running one test and then stopping the application. That was a pain to maintain and restricted us to nightly tests due to the time it took to run the full suite. It was still worth it, but I wonder if there is an easier way. Are there alternatives to this approach? The main criterion is that each test should not be affected by any other test in the suite, no matter if it failed or succeeded.

  Now that monotouch is being banned, I was wondering if there is a way to translate C# (or some other modern language for that matter) into objective-C? I won't mind using apple's api as long as I don't have to declare my variables in 3-4 stages (ivar-property-synthesize-dealloc). All I want is a less wordy language to concentrate on my intent and not on the compiler syntax. unfortunately apple in its arrogance thinks objective-c is a "modern" language and if you are looking for an alternative (monotouch) it's because you are incapable of coding. also if you don't find programming in itunes; sorry, xcode enjoyable, it is not because there are better alternatives, it's because you are stupid. anyway back to my original question: can it be done?

• Invalid security validation exception inside a SharePoint workflow

  I'm having a strange security problem with a SharePoint workflow. Particular calls seem to result in the following exception: Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: The security validation for this page is invalid. I've come across this error before and the simple fix is web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = true; ... web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = false; However I've never once encountered this problem inside a workflow before since a workflow runs as system. I first got this error in a code activity where I set the value of a column on the list item. Wrapping the item.Update in AllowUnsafeUpdates fixed it. After the code activity I have a CreateTask activity. This also causes the same error but only after running the code inside the activity's MethodInvoking. In both cases there's a SPListItem.UpdateItem involved within the stack trace. This call is failing a security check. I don't know anything about how this check works so I don't know where to look next. This is a strange one, because this SharePoint dev machine has been working fine for some time. No other projects or workflows exhibit this behaviour so that rules out an installation problem. There's just something about this particular workflow. [UPDATE] I've gotten around the issue by just creating a new project and building it up again. I still have the broken one and I'd still like to figure out the problem with it. I'd appreciate any suggestions of what it might be.

• Rotate a feature Image in Open Layers - ReApply StyleMap to layer.

  I have an open layers map. It adds and removes my "imageFeature" every 10secs or so. I have a JSON feed that gives me the rotation that I need, I have a request to get that rotation and set it as a variable of rotationv. Everything works but the fact when the image is recreated it does not update the rotation. Why does this not rotate my image? Debugging with firebug I now notice that "rotationv" is updating as per it should be. But when the point is destroyed then added again it does not apply the new rotation... Add: I realised that the "image" is applied as per the layer. So I need to figure out how to re apply the stylemap to the layer so it will trigger the "update" on the page. //redefine layer 2 so it can be updated - test.js is just a 0.0 ref// var layer2 = new OpenLayers.Layer.GML("Layer 2", "test.js", { format: OpenLayers.Format.GeoJSON, styleMap: styleMap }); But even if I add the above into my function still no luck. Included map.addLayers([layer2]); into the function as well.   Hi, Could anyone tell me how to implement a marquee style progress bar in wxPython? As stated on MSDN: you can animate it in a way that shows activity but does not indicate what proportion of the task is complete. Thank you. I tried this but it doesn't seem to work. The timer ticks but the gauge doesn't scroll.   Hi guys, I have another question. XMLhttpRequests haunt me. Everything is now in the database but I need this data to update my page on firt page load or reload. The XHR is triggered in JavaScript file which triggers PHP-Script. PHP-Script access MySQL database. But how do I get the fetched records back into my JavaScript for page update. I can not figure it out. • How to add flags to RC.EXE through QMake .pro makefiles

  I've the following definition in my .pro file: RC_FILE = app.rc This RC file contains a global include at the top: #include "version_info.h" The version_info.h header is on a common header files directory. Since RC.EXE takes INCLUDE environment variable in consideration, according to MS documentation, my build process batch sets up that accordingly: SET INCLUDE=%PROJECTDIR%\version;%INCLUDE% ... QMAKE project.pro -spec win32-msvc2008 -r CONFIG += release This works perfect as RC seems to read that INCLUDE var so the "version_info.h" file is including on every RC file properly. The problem is when I generate a VS solution (or Import it through the VS Addin). The RC invocation does not contain any /I flag (as I expect) but does not read any INCLUDE variable, even when I've setup through system 'environment variables' dialog in XP. So I'm stuck with this problem, with two alternatives I could not get to work: Make VS RC.exe invocation honour the INCLUDE variable (didn't work either as user or system variable). Force QMAKE to pass /I flag to RC invocation, and get that /I flag imported into the project settings (Resource Compiler properties). Thanks in advance.
