• Screen dims on opening certain applications on Macbook

  I have ubuntu 11.10 installed on an old 2008 macbook. There is an issue of screen dimming that I didnt find anywhere else on the forums. The issue is that the screen is dimmed when I open certain applications (Firefox, Software Center) and this cannot be readjusted by the physical brightness buttons on the keyboard. I tried a bunch of things on the barely barely visible screen, and had no choice but to restart. This has happened everytime. Does anyone know how to solve this?

• Debugging Windows

  After installing VS 2008 on a new PC I noticed that the Autos and Locals windows did not show up when debugging. So I went to the logical place to find them View/Other Windows. No luck they were not there. I use VS every day but like a lot of folks I only need to install it every few years, usually with a new PC. So I forgot where they were. Finding them is easy, just start debugging a project and go to Debug/Windows. The Autos and Locals windows along with the others will be there. • Editing XML Literals Embedded Expressions in Visual Basic 2010 (Avner Aharoni)

  The implicit line continuation feature in Visual Basic 2010 provided an opportunity to improve the code editing experience in XML literals embedded expressions. In Visual Studio 2008, pressing Enter inside an embedded expression would result in the cursor being positioned to the left of the end embedded expression tag. In Visual Studio 2010, pressing Enter inserts a newline for the cursor, and the end embedded expression tag moves to the line below. • .NET Reflector Open Source Alternative

  When I found out yesterday that one of my top 5 development tools .NET Reflector will no longer be free at the end of February, I thought I'd see if work had started on a good open source alternative...and guess what...work on ILSpy is already well underway!! There seems to be a difference of opinion on what Red Gate said when they purchased .NET Reflector from Lutz Roeder in 2008. They say that they would try to keep it free, where as others think they promised to keep it free. Either way at the time I thought it was a smart purchase by Red Gate as it would raise their profile overnight within the .Net community. But not only are they going to charge $35 for v7 (which is up to them), they have also time-bombed v6 to force users to pay. This I think will lower their profile overnight within the .Net community!! Maybe they are been slightly naive in thinking the community wouldn't just write an alternative?  #

  Based upon answering many questions on forums such as forums.asp.net, here are some tips on getting your questions answered, once you have exhausted searching on your own. Choose a concise but meaningful title but avoid words like "urgent" Post to the correct section of the forum - some people specialise in a particular section of a given forum Make it clear that you have already made an effort to answer yourself. Summerise the environmental context of your question e.g. If using SQL then state the version e.g. SQLExpress 2008 If you need to post a code or markup sample, tidy it up by removing extraneous blank lines and set the tab spacing to 2 rather than 4. Take your time composing the question so that it is set out as clearly as possible. Remember that the majority of people providing answers do so in their own time. Be very polite and thank those that help you.

• Booting 11.10 from USB stick on MacBook Pro 5,1 fails

  I've created a bootable memory stick on a Windows computer, and tested it on an HP PC. It's made from a 64-bit image of Ubuntu 11.10, downloaded from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download. When I boot from this memory stick, there is some kind of boot menu, where I can choose to run Ubuntu from the memory stick, or install. I select Run from memory stick. (the words may be wrong here, I'm taking it from memory.) From this point, the screen is black (but backlighted), and I can't do anything but turn off the computer. It gets hot, too. Has anyone been more successful than me? Are there known issues? The computer is a 15 inch MacBook Pro 5,1 (unibody, late 2008), 4 GB memory.

  Back in 2008, smartphones were a small market and it was commonplace for sites to be designed for a fixed width - say, 900px or 960px - with the page centered if the browser window was larger. Many designers said fluid width was better, but since user screens typically varied between 1024x768 and 1920x1080, fluid width allowed longer line length than is optimal for ease of reading, and so many sites (including Stack Exchange) use fixed width. Now that mobile devices are common, what is the the best approach to support both desktop and mobile browsers? Establish a separate mobile site (e.g: mobile.example.com) Serve a different CSS to mobile devices; if so how? Server-side browser sniffing, or a @media rule? • Where to find PHP version usage stats?

  My original question was: what percentage of sites are using php 5.4.x? (As it has some very interesting new features.) With secondary questions like how many of the cheap web hosting places have upgraded, which versions of the linux distros include it, etc. But I'm coming up blanks. http://php.net/usage.php stops at July 2007, and the nexen.net website seems to have stopped in 2008. At SecuritySpace they only list the web servers, not php versions. The TIOBE link isn't what I'm after (it doesn't -- and couldn't -- break down by version number. I thought php.net might show download numbers, but I cannot see them anywhere. I kind of answered the distro question, but it requires a lot of clicking around at distrowatch.com. E.g. I see here that Ubuntu offers php 5.4.6 in the latest snapshot, but the latest release (Ubuntu 12.04) has 5.3.10.

  I work on a team which employs many of the extreme programming practices. We've gone to great lengths to utilize paired programming as much as possible. Unfortunately the practice sometimes breaks down and becomes ineffective. In looking for ways to tweak our process I came across two articles describing parallel pair programming: Parallel Pair Programming Death of paired programming. Its 2008 move on to parallel pairing While these are good resources I wanted to read a bit more on the topic. As you can imagine Googling for variations on parallel pair programming nets mostly results which relate to parallel programming. What I'm after is additional discussion on the topic of parallel pair programming. Do additional references exist that my Google-fu is unable to discern?   I need to obtain the handle of the window for SDL 2.0.3. I got the suggestion to use info.window after initializing SDL and filling the info variable with data by calling SDL_GetWindowWMInfo(); included in the header file SDL_syswm.h. My compiler (visual studio 2008 professional edition) gives the following error: 226) : error C2039: 'window' : is not a member of 'SDL_SysWMinfo' 1 include\sdl_syswm.h(173) : see declaration of 'SDL_SysWMinfo' Any help appreciated. Thanks. Nevermind, I needed to use "info.info.win.window". That seems a bit redundant, but whateves.

• My Favourite Two Buttons in Denali CTP1 SSIS

  In SSIS for SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 when you delete something from the design surface it is gone.  The only real way of getting the deleted item(s) back is to revert to a previous version of the package or to redo the deleted items manually.  Neither of these options is particularly great.  I have made this mistake before and cursed not having CTL+Z and CTL+Y.  Denali changes this.  We can now undo and redo.  Very very welcome.  Well done, finally, the SSIS team.
