How to minimize the risk of employees spreading critical information? [closed]

What's common sense when it comes to minimising the risk of employees spreading critical information to rivalling companies? As of today, it's clear that not even the US government and military can be sure that their data stays safely within their doors. Thereby I understand that my question probably instead should be written as "What is common sense to make it harder for employees to spread business critical information?" If anyone would want to spread information, they will find a way. That's the way life work and always has. If we make the scenario a bit more realistic by narrowing our workforce by assuming we only have regular John Does onboard and not Linux-loving sysadmins , what should be good precautions to at least make it harder for the employees to send business-critical information to the competition? As far as I can tell, there's a few obvious solutions that clearly has both pros and cons: Block services such as Dropbox and similar, preventing anyone to send gigabytes of data through the wire. Ensure that only files below a set size can be sent as email (?) Setup VLANs between departments to make it harder for kleptomaniacs and curious people to snoop around. Plug all removable media units - CD/DVD, Floppy drives and USB Make sure that no configurations to hardware can be made (?) Monitor network traffic for non-linear events (how?) What is realistic to do in a real world? How does big companies handle this? Sure, we can take the former employer to court and sue, but by then the damage has already been caused... Thanks a lot

Ubuntu 9.10 won't reboot after replacing a failed drive

Hello Serverfault community. I hope someone can shed light on a peculiar problem I am having with an Ubuntu 9.10 server install. I am not a Linux expert but have the responsibility of fixing the box if something goes wrong. DOH! I have Ubuntu 9.10 server installed on on a desktop platform: Compaq Presario SR5027CL. There are two 1TB SATA drives configured in a RAID 1 array; I use the box as an email backup server for a small group of users. Last week one of the drives failed and was replaced with a new drive of the same type. The problem I have been having is getting the box to reboot after a restart or a shutdown halt. The OS and the RAID 1 array are on the same drives that make up the RAID 1 array. The replacement drive (sda) was added to the box and the partitions were created to match the existing good drive (sdb). The array is made up of sda1 and sdb1. I found an interesting point while checking the BIOS settings: there is a "HDD Boot Group Priority" section, and the new drive was selected as the "1. 3rd master"; the server wouldn't boot configured like that, but when I set the old drive to be "1. 4th master", the box will reboot. I'm checking some more things, but I would certainly appreciate any useful information. Thanks in advance.

Building a small server farm

Hi, I am planning to set up a Tech startup company that will provide web application solutions. Eventually we hope to diversify into different areas such as possibly social media or other services. For now we plan on running a high demand (from 1000 to 10,000 users in the first year) website running the application. This includes a MySQL database backend, email, and development servers. My question is then, what type of server arrangement will work best, that is ti say should i have a small cluster of ultra high power machines (E.G. Top of the range Xeons, with 12GB RAM) or will it be better to have more less powerful servers load balanced? Should I go for 1 - 2 u servers rack mounted ot would it be beter for it just to be tower servers for maintainability? Finally I would also like to know what kind of Internet and router i would need, I currently have 10mbit down and barely 1 mbit up, but soon our area will have a fiber optic connection with international speeds of up to 25 mbit / sec. What are the side effects of disabling an Exchange mailbox?

When working with Exchange Server 2007 or newer, disabling a mailbox is a fairly common operation. However, the Technet documentation has no details about the side effects of disabling a mailbox. This is all it says. "This task removes all the Exchange attributes from the user object in Active Directory. Based on the deleted items retention policy, the Exchange store will retain mailbox data for the user object." Perhaps the boss has delegated calendar control to a secretary. Maybe a team of staff members all share access to a public folder. Perhaps a power user has been granted the ability to receive email at several different addresses. Two clear questions come to mind. What happens to links between mailboxes after a mailbox is disconnected? Can the Disable-Mailbox operation be easily undone?

3 Server, is this a cluster scenario?

Hello, At the moment I have one Ubuntu server, 9.10, running with a simple Samba share, a mail server, DNS server and DHCP server. Mostly its just there for file sharing and email server. I also have 2 other servers that are exactly the same hardware and spec as the first, which have an rsync set up to retrieve the shared folders and backs them up. However, if the first server goes down, all of our shares disappear along with our mail and the system must be rebuilt. Also I tend to find if people are downloading a large amount from the file server, no-one can access there emails - especially in the morning when everyone is signing in at once. Would it be more beneficial for me to have all 3 servers, all running the same services, doing the same thing with some sort of cluster with load balancing? In short, how can I get the best out of my 3 hardware servers? I'm not really sure where to begin looking, or how to go about such a setup where 3 servers are all identical, but perhaps one acts as the main load balancer?? If someone can point me in the right direction, or if this simply sounds like one of those Enterprise Cloud's that is now a default setup in Ubuntu Server 9.10+, then I'll go down that route. Part of this app is a "Scream" button that plays random screams from cast members of a TV show. I have to bang on the app quite a while to see a memory leak in Instruments, but it's there, occasionally coming up (every 45 seconds to 2 minutes.) The leak is 3.50kb when it occurs. Haven't been able to crack it for several hours. Any help appreciated. Why is this PHP loop rendering every row twice?

I'm working on a real frankensite here not of my own design. There's a rudimentary CMS and one of the pages shows customer records from a MySQL DB. But everything looks ok to me. You'll notice that the customer name is clickable; clicking takes you to another page where you can view their full info as held in the DB - and for both rows, the customer ID is identical, and manually checking the DB shows there's no duplicate entries. The code is definitely rendering each row twice, but for what reason I have no idea. All pointers / advice appreciated.

The new Person is added, but on the line with this.projectService.updateProject(project); I get an error. MVC 3 ModelView passing parameters between view & controller

I've been playing with MVC 3 in a test project and have the following issue. I have Group & Subscriber entities and those are coupled through a SubscriberGroup table. Using the DetailView of Group I open a view of SubscriberGroup containing all subscribers. This list has the option to filter. So far it all works, however when I call the AddToGroup method on the controller it fails. Specifically it goes into the method but doesn't pass the subscriberCheckedModels list. Am I doing something wrong? Mediawiki authenication replacement showing "Login Required" instead of signing user into wiki

I'm fairly to MediaWiki and needed a way to automatically log users in after they authenticated to a central server (which creates a session and cookie for applications to use). I wrote a custom authentication extension based off of the LDAP Authentication extension and a few others. The extension simply needs to read some session data to create or update a user and then log them in automatically. All the authentication is handled externally. A user would not be able to even access the wiki website without logging in externally. This extension was placed into production which replaced the old standard MediaWiki authentication system. I also merged user accounts to prepare for the change. By default, a user must be logged in to view, edit, or otherwise do anything in the wiki. My problem is that I found if a user had previously used the built-in MediaWiki authentication system and returned to the wiki, my extension would attempt to auto-login the user, however, they would see a "Login Required" page instead of the page they requested like they were an anonymous user. If the user then refreshed the page, they would be able to navigate, edit, etc. From what I can tell, this issue resolves itself after the UserID cookie is reset or created fresh (but has been known to strangely come up sometimes). To replicate, if there is an older User ID in the "USERID" cookie, the user is shown the "Login Required" page which is a poor user experience. Another way of showing this page is by removing the user account from the database and refreshing the wiki page. As a result, the user will again see the "Login Required" page. Does anyone know how I can use debugging to find out why MediaWiki thinks the user is not signed in when the cookies are set properly and all it takes is a page refresh? sp_send_dbmail attach files stored as varbinary in database

I have a two part question relating to sending query results as attachments using sp_send_dbmail. Problem 1: Only basic .txt files will open. Any other format like .pdf or .jpg are corrupted. Problem 2: When attempting to send multiple attachments, I receive one file with all file names glued together. I'm running SQL Server 2005 and I have a table storing uploaded documents: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[EmailAttachment]( [EmailAttachmentID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [MassEmailID] [int] NULL, -- foreign key [FileData] [varbinary](max) NOT NULL, [FileName] [varchar](100) NOT NULL, [MimeType] [varchar](100) NOT NULL I also have a MassEmail table with standard email stuff. Here is the SQL Send Mail script. But clearly original headers are lost. It's also worth noting that attachment file sizes are different than the original files. That is most likely due to improper encoding as well. So I'm hoping there's a way to create file headers using the stored mimetype, or some way to include file headers in the binary data? I'm also not confident in the values of the last few parameters, and I know coalesce is not quite right, because it prepends the first file name with a comma. But good documentation is nearly impossible to find. Please help!

Dynamics CRM error "A currency is required if a value exists in a money field" after converting Acti

We have a Dynamics CRM 4.0 instance with some custom attributes of type "money" on the Case entity and on all Activity entities (Email, Phone Call, etc.) When I use the built-in "Convert Activity to Case" functionality I find that the resulting Case does not have a Currency set, even if the Activity it was created from does have it. Whenever the case is opened the user then gets this JavaScript error: A currency is required if a value exists in a money field. Select a currency and try again. This is extremely annoying! How do I fix it? Is there any way I can set the currency? It needs to be done synchronously, because the Case is opened immediately when it's created from an Activity. So even if I started a workflow to set the currency the user would still get that error at least once. Alterntatively, can I just suppress the warning somehow? I don't really care about setting the Currency, I just want the error gone. Thanks in advance for any help!

Situation I have: -a table with User(ID, Name, FirstName, Email) This table is made, so that a users who is registered in two tenants doesn't need to login again. -a table with Tentantuser(ID, TenantID, UserID (FK to table User), UserName, Loginname, Password, Active) This table contains de login en password for one tenant. Example: UserX is registered in TenantA and TenantB UserX logs in on TenantA, with his login and password for TenantA System verifies or login and password are correct in the table TenantUser System validates UserX which userID corresponds to the Id in the table User UserX goes to TenantB and is automatically logged in My problem: How can I create a custom Provider so I can check the login & password in a tenant? Random DNS Client Issue with BIND9/Windows Server 2003 DNS

Within our office, we have a local server running DNS, for internal related "domains", (e.g. .internal, .office, .lan, .vpn, etc.). Randomly, only the hosts configured with those extensions will stop resolving on the Windows-based workstations. Sometimes it'll work for a couple weeks without issue on one machine, then suddenly stop working, or it'll happen on another 15 times per day. It's completely random for all workstations. When troubleshooting, I have opened up a command prompt, and issued various nslookup commands for some of these hosts, and they resolve, however I've been told that nslookup uses different "libraries" for name resolution than other applications such as web browsers, email clients, etc. The only solution thus far, is manually restarting the Windows DNS Client on each workstation when this happens. Issuing the ipconfig /flushdns command multiple times helps every now and then, but is not successful enough to even attempt before restarting the DNS Client. I have tried two different DNS servers; BIND9, and Windows Server 2003 R2 DNS, and the behavior is the same. We have a single Netgear JGS524 switch all workstations and servers are connected to within the office, and a Linksys SR224G switch in another department with workstations attached.

JavaMail not sending Subject or From under jetty:run-war

Has anyone seen JavaMail not sending proper MimeMessages to an SMTP server, depending on how the JVM in started? At the end of the day, I can't send JavaMail SMTP messages with Subject: or From: fields, and it appears other headers are missing, only when running the app as a war. The web project is built with Maven and I'm testing sending JavaMail using a browser and a simple mail.jsp to debug and see different behavior when launching the app with: 1) mvn jetty:run (mail sends fine, with proper Subject and From fields) 2) mvn jetty:run-war (mail sends fine, but missing Subject, From, and other fields) I've meticulously run diff on the (verbose) Maven debug output (-X), and there are zero differences in the runtime dependencies between the two. I've also compared System properties, and they are identical. Something else is happening the jetty:run-war case that changes the way JavaMail behaves. What other stones need turning? Curiously, I've tried a debugger in both situations and found that the javax.mail.internet.MimeMessage instance is getting created differently. The webapp is using Spring to send email picked off of an Apache ActiveMQ queue. When running the app as mvn jetty:run the MimeMessage.contentStream variable is used for message content. When running as mvn jetty:run-war, the MimeMessage.content variable is used for the message contents, and the content = ASCIIUtility.getBytes(is); call removes all of the header data from the parsed content. Since this seemed very odd, and debugging Spring/ActiveMQ is a deep dive, I created a simplified test without any of that infrastructure: just a JSP using mail-1.4.2.jar, yet the same headers are missing. Also of note, these headers are missing when running the WAR file under Tomcat 5.5.27. Tomcat behaves just like Jetty when running the WAR, with the same missing headers. With JavaMail debugging turned on, I clearly see different output.
