• Windows 7 wifi reports "no network access" and "no internet access" but connects in fedora

  I am running windows 7 home basic (64bit) on a Acer 5742G laptop with Atheos wifi adapter in it. Yesterday, I hiberneted my computer as I always do and up untill then the wifi was working fine. When I booted my computer up again today I started having a strange problem: It detects my wifi but after connecting to it, it keeps on oscillating between states of no network access and no internet access. I can't connect to anything (the internet or my router). I tried to reset my internet protocol stack using this fixit file. I also tried to uninstall and reinstall my network driver. Neither helped. I am using the same laptop's fedora installation right now and the wifi is working perfectly fine. Please help. Edit To add additional details, I have Microsoft Security essentials as my antivirus software and I haven't messed with the firewall or the router configurations.

• Running Ubuntu Server from a USB key / thumb drive (being mindful of flash's write limitations)

  Having become disillusioned with hacking Buffalo NAS devices, I've decided to roll my own home server. After some research, I have settled on an HP Proliant Microserver with Ubuntu Server and a ZFS RAID-Z array for data. I settled on this configuration after trying and regretfully rejecting FreeNAS because the Logitech Media Server (LMS) software isn't available on the AMD64 flavour of this platform and because I think Debian/Ubuntu server is a better future-proof platform. I considered Open Media Vault, but concluded that it isn't quite yet ready for my purposes. That said, FreeNAS does include the option to run itself off a 2GB+ flash device like USB key or thumb drive. Apparently FreeNAS is mindful of the write limitations of flash devices and so creates virtual disks for running the OS, writing only the required configuration information back to flash. This would give me an extra data drive slot. Q: Can Ubuntu Server be configured sensibly to run off a flash device such as a USB key/thumb drive? If so, how? The write limitations of flash should be accounted for.

• Can I take a HDD in Raid1 and plug it straight into a different machine?

  I would assume that I can just take my HDD out of my NAS (in raid1 mirror) and plug it into another enclosure and have it work off the bat but I'd like to make sure... Any ideas? Edit: My current setup is a Netgear ReadyNAS in (hardware) raid1. I'm hoping to replace this with a home theatre type PC (possibly running Ubuntu), and would like to migrate my data without having to do a bulk transfer over my network between the 2 machines. Can anyone confirm the case for the Netgear ReadyNAS?

• Free alternatives to vSphere for ESXi (if one exists)

  Dear All, Am feeling a touch confused and overwhemled. From what I gather even though ESXi is free I will only be able to manage my VMs (create or power on etc) for 60 days unless I buy a licence for vSphere. This is somewhat frustrating. As I am looking for a home lab to practice for various certs I was hoping to also practice using vmware stuff to do so. Have I got the wrong end of the stick? Is there a free built in web interface like there was with VMServer or is the only option vSphere (which is massively out of my price range)? Looking forward to your responses and hoping that I have just missed something obvious! Regards Tim

• Ubuntu 12.04 and Nvidia GTX 550 Ti

  OK I'm currently trying to install Ubuntu x64 Server 12.04 onto the following machine: Intel Core i5-2320 3.0GHz LGA1155 6MB 8 GB DDR3 RAM, Gigabyte Z68P-DS3 S1155 Intel Z68 DDR3 ATX M/B, OCZ 60 GB SSD, 3x Samsung 2TB drives in a RAID 5 array (via M/B) Now what I think is causing the issue is the following: EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti 951MHz 1GB PCI-Express HDMI FPB As the server CD works in text mode I haven't had a problem with actually installing Ubuntu. Partioned with: 1GB /boot SSD, 59GB / SSD, 10GB swap RAID5, ~4TB /home RAID5 On a straight boot, you briefly see the GRUB menu, followed by a blank screen. The keyboard and mouse blink as they are initialised but no sign of life from the screen. Followed by a bit of research (otherwise known as google) ... Booted in quiet splash nomodeset Now I have a fully working linux distro at the command prompt. I then proceed to try and update the nvidia drivers with apt-get (after updating repositories etc) and rebooting. Still the same problem. I also tried reinstalling from the CD and installing said drivers in the install process before GRUB was installed, still the same symptoms. Does anybody have any solutions? I'm at my wits end here, I bought this machine to be a linux server / tinkering machine and have just spent 4-5 hours trying to just get a basic install working.

  I want to move my data from dropbox to SpiderOak. I have 3 computers running dropbox. But I have a poor WAN connection with very limited upload bandwidth. So I thought I do as first step install the dropbox client on my server on the internet an download there my data from dropbox. Then after this I upload/backup my data from this server with a broadband connection to SpiderOak. After the backup is completed I setup the sync between my 3 computers so that they will not have to upload the data again. Will this process will work so that I don't have to upload my data again over my WAN connection at home?

• Suspected power supply issue? PC repeatedly whirs for some seconds and then dies.

  I've come home today and switched on the PC I've built a few months ago only for the machine to whir for a few short seconds and then die. It repeats this until I disconnect the power lead. Nothing is output to the screen and this cut out happens very quickly after switching it on. What could this be and how could it be fixed? Is it the power supply? I'm in despair :-( My spec is below, everything is new and was bought and assembled within the last 6months, system has been fantastic until now.   Previously, there was an Internet Time tab on the Date and Time applet of the Control Panel, wherein one could force a query of an internet time server and also type in a different server from the ones supplied. However, this tab has now disappeared, and I need to have it back. I should mention that this machine has never been part of a domain, since it seems that machines that are such do not have such a tab. • Why ping another inet machine from MacBook get netgate's ip address?

  I have three machine in my home network connected by a wireless router. One is server installed linux at 192.168.1.1, another is Thinkpad with MS Windows XP at 192.168.1.2, last one is MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.3 at 192.168.1.3. When I ping the Linux Server from Thinkpad (MS Windows XP) I can get the correct ip address, but when I ping it from Mac I get the global address of my router, like 61.135.181.175. Could you tell me why this happen? And how do I get same ping result on Mac and Windows. Thanks

  I made the new user using this command pure-pw useradd droa -u 52007 -g 52009 -d /home/droa/public_html But when i connect using ftp , it says that Login authentication failed. Which other setting i need to use. I also have cpanel where i sued to create accounts. Even i checked the /etc/pureftpd.passwd File as well , but it only had one user which i created. I don't know which ftp does cpanel uses. The documentation of pureftp says that i need to compile with (--with-everything) Is there any way to do that without re-compiling

  I am affected by the BUG: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-greeter/+bug/874241 Otherwise, if like me you have a laptop connected to a second monitor of higher resolution, LIGHTDM at the login stage, mirrors the displays in both screens and assign to them a common resolution (1024X768) in my case, instead of extending the desktop (Primary screen with the greeter and secondary with just a logo as mentioned in the Multiple Monitors UX specifications book for 12.04). • Accessing second hard drive

  So I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my computer. I installed it on my 60gb SSD hard drive, and in the installation it never acknowledged the existence of my second hard drive. The hard drive that I keep all my files on, and which I want to make my home folder if I can, is a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB cache (WD1002FAEX). I've read the following: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount but honestly cannot work out how to access the hard drive from my Ubuntu installation. I did have Windows 7 64-bit prior to installing Ubuntu. I have backed up all the files on the hard drive, but if I could just access them straight off that would be super cool. Does anyone know how I can use the second hard drive? Now i am getting i have enough disk space in /dev/xvdb. Is there a way i can allocate some diskspace to / from /dev/xvdb or Any other Ways. Please suggest me the possible solution for this.Is it possible to use the same /dev/xvdb partition with another instance.

  I've installed Java 7 on my Mac (10.7.5), but in the terminal there is still java 6. java version "1.6.0_37" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode) There will be no problem with the version 6 on terminal, if I always got that errors when I tried to install a java application (LatexDraw): : CGContextGetCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextSetBaseCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextGetCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextSetBaseCTM: invalid context 0x0 The problem is related to instability of java 6 inferred from this link I've read this installed-java-7-on-mac-osx-but-terminal-is-still-using-version-6 and also try to change my Java version by using export JAVA_HOME="/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home", but in my folder /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions, there is no version 1.7, only versions under 1.6 ??? So, how can I fix this issue?

  I have an HP ML 310 server running CentOS Linux 5.5. I'm buying a RAID card (LSI 9260-8i) to set up a mirrored OS drive. Right now, the boot drive is set up with GRUB installed on the MBR of /dev/sda & has a 100MB /boot partition for /dev/sda1, then the rest is configured in LVM with a 20GB with a 20GB VG for the root partition & ~80GB VG for home. The new disk sizes will also be slightly larger as well. What is the best way to clone the boot drive to the new CCISS device?

• Setting up JDK 7 for IntelliJ on the Mac

  I installed the JDK by downloading the dmg from the Oracle website here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk7u9-downloads-1859576.html After installation I tried to setup the JDK in IntelliJ but when I set the location to the JDK in the Project Structure-SDKs screen, only a few libraries were loaded and many (including all libraries from Content/Classes/) were missing. How can I add all of the necessary libraries libraries? The install location for the JDK is /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_07.jdk/Contents/Home I've tried looking in /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/ to no avail.

  Hi Folks, I've started a new job at a house where they've got an amazingly unruly patchwork of Linux, xBSD, and OpenSolaris boxes. Every box has its own user auth using local /etc/passwd, etc. Users/Groups have differing uids/gids on each machine, and each machine has its own /home/ tree. (no central NAS /homes) My job is get get everything into an LDAP directory and use that for login auth. How do I get LDAP to deal with the differing uids/gids? Thanks.

• Ubuntu installed along side Win 8 but not shown in boot

  Actually the question says it all, but let me tell you what I did, so u may find exactly what might have went wrong: I have Win 8 installed on 500 GB HDD. SO I shrunk it four times for: partition 1 - the original partition containing Win 8 sys (118GB) partition 2 - NTFS formatted for my data (188GB) partition 3 - NTFS formatted for my data (100GB) partition 4 - NTFS formatted for Linux distro 1 (I reformatted it to ext4 during Ubuntu installation) (25GB) partition 5 - NTFS formatted for Linux distro 1 (21GB) So now I booted Ubuntu from USB (created from ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso) and deleted last two partitions 4 and 5 to create: partition 1 - ext4 where I installed Ubuntu (25GB) partition 2 - Swap (4GB) partition 3 - unallocated space, not formatted yet (17GB) Ubuntu installation said it installed successfully and that I have to restart to boot in Ubuntu. But when I restart Windows 8 auto booted - there was no dual boot. Now, I am looking for a similar Full Permissions/Read/Write that maintains an encrypted, and password protected file that it Tri-Platform. I'd like to have the future ability to use it on Mac OS X, Windows 7/8, and Ubuntu (current releases+). I appreciate your recommendations. Thank you. (I like mounting a DMG and having a file directory structure that can be easily maintained and organized. When done, un-mounting the file.) (I've seen Windows tools to open encrypted DMG files? and I will explore these options, but with the desire to also keep the file accessible on on three OSes, someone might have additional suggestions.)

• Multiple URL's going to same page - Kosher for Google?

  I hear conflicting answers from people about this, and I'm a developer by trade, and my SEO knowledge is not what it should be. Here's my situation: I run a website that lists hotels, restaurants, bars, shops, etc for a small Asian beach town. Lots of establishments here are hotels with a restaurant and bar, as well as restaurants that are also bars. As en example, a Mexican restaurant that also functions as a full cocktail bar. I first set it up so each establishment has one page, but can create multiple pages based on their other areas of business. This forces people to create TWO listings under the same name, and most just add the exact same information onto each page, making things redundant. I am re-arranging the database so that a establishment has only ONE listing (one unique page referenced by the unique code '12345ABCDEF') that is accessible from browsing under "Restaurants" and "Bars", and has the URL structures: site.com/dining/mexican/12345ABCDEF/business-name.html site.com/bars/cocktail_bars/12345ABCDEF/business-name.html I could easily simplify the URL to just the unique code and name: site.com/12345ABCDEF/business-name.html But, I found that Google has parsed by URL structure and lists like this on their SERP: Home > Dining > Mexican With each pointing to the default page for homepage, restaurants and Mexican restaurants. If I simplify the URL structure, will I lose these associations? Could Google also be picking up this structure from my breadcrumb trail at the top of the page? What is the best way to set up URL's on these pages so I am not penalized by Google for having identical information on two URL's, while still being able to have places show up as they did with the old system?

• Cannot Boot, How to recover

  Am running 11.10 64-bit with Gnome-shell. Something happened late Friday whereby my machine never gets to the login screen. I do get to an Ubuntu splash logo, after that I get a text screen that it hangs on. The screen is referring to issues with mounting various network resources, including VMWare and also some references to my NAS that are in fstab. If I hit "esc" I can get to the GRUB menu and into recovery console. If I try to do a file system check, I run into a similar error screen that I see when trying to boot normally. A possible clue here is that during my last good session I made some mods to the /etc/hosts file to reference another system which I'm connecting to with Synergy. I don't believe I have hardware issues as I'm able to boot properly with a Live USB and connect to my network/Internet. A few more tidbits. I have regular Dejadups backups on my NAS. I have a good Clonezilla whole drive image which is 4-6 weeks old.. My home is encrypted. I thought I'd try blowing away my hosts file via live USB, but when I mounted the hard drive everything was read-only and I couldn't figure out how to replace it. P.S. I logged in via CLI and modded the host file to remove the entry I'd made, to no avail. System continue to gets stuck on the following: CIFS VFS: default security mechanism requested. The default security mechanism will be upgraded from ntlm to ntlmv2 in kernel version 3.1s Would love some sober advice on how to attack this.

• Native AAA games coming to Ubuntu. Where they will be installed?

  Many users use SSD disks (and I believe many more in the future) for their OS. 128GB SSD disks are common place nowadays and many users (like me) use their SSD for dual booting (Windows and Ubuntu). Ubuntu installations like this occupies 20-40 GB (/ , /home and swap). Up to now there was no problem. In a few weeks though, triple A games are coming to Ubuntu (i.e. l4d2) that require probably tens of GB for installation. In windows there is no problem, because you can install a game anywhere you want (i.e. I install games in D:/Games/). In Ubuntu, though, programs install files in many places (i.e. /usr/* , /lib, /etc ) so from what I remember, I never had the option to choose where to install a program. So, how will it be possible to install AAA games that require many GBs, when our Ubuntu installations won't have the necessary space? Could a /opt mounted on a mechanical disk (HDD) be the solution? Is it something I am missing?

This is not to say the Professional version will lack the features, but the license will specifically prohibit the developer from using the compiler for a specific class of development, even with 3rd party or home grown solutions. So my question is if there is a precedent of a compiler or similar creative tool prohibiting the class of work you can use it for. Specifically a commercially licensed "professional" tool like Delphi XE3. Also, would such a restriction be legally enforceable? I know there have been educational edition or starter edition tools in the past that have restricted their use for commercial purposes, but those were not sold as "professional" tools. Also I know that a lot of computing software and equipment will have a disclaimer that it is not for use in "life support equipment" or "nuclear power" but that is more of avoiding liability than prohibiting activity. Seems like I recall Microsoft putting a restriction in FrontPage that you couldn't use it to create a web site that reflected poorly on Microsoft, but they pulled that restriction before it could be tested legally.
