Improving server security [closed]

I've been developing webapps for a while ... and I always had a sysadmin which made the environment perfect to run my apps with no worries. But now I am starting a project on myself, and I need to set up a server, knowing near to nothing about it. All I need to do is just have a Linux, with a webserver (I usually used Apache), PHP and MySQL. I'll also need SSH, SSL to run https:// and FTP to transfer files. I know how to install almost everything (need advice about SSL) with Ubuntu Server, but I am concerned about the security topic ... say: firewall, open/closed ports, php security, etc ... Where can I found a good guide covering this topics? Everything else in the server... I don't need it, and I wanna know how to remove it, to avoid resources consumption. Final note: I'll be running the webapp at amazon-ec2 or rackspace cloud servers. Thanks in advance!!

Card emulation via software NFC

After reading a lot of questions, i decided to post this one. I read that stock version of android does not support API's for card emulation. Also, we cannot write custom applications to secure element embedded in nfc controllers due to keys managed by google/samsung. I need to emulate a card (mifare or desfire etc). The option i can see is doing it via software. I have a ACR122U reader and i've tested that NFC P2P mode works fine with the Nexus-S that i have. 1) I came across a site that said that nexus s's NFC controller (pn532) can emulate a mifare 4k card. If this is true, can i write/read apdu commands to this emulated card? (Probably if i use a modded rom like cyanogenmod) 2) Can i write a android application that reads apdu commands sent from the reader and generate appropriate responses (if not fully, then upto some extent only). To do so, i searched that we need to patch nexus s with cynagenmod. Has someone tried emulating card via this method? I see that this is possible since we have products from access control companies offering mobile applications via which one can open doors e.g. http://www.assaabloy.com/en/com/Products/seos-mobile-access/

Google Drive stripped Outlook 2010 of all emails, contacts, etc

I have a business that requires I use the business email: [email protected] I loaded Google Drive as a free cloud to share project details with co-worker. Side effect is that Outlook 2010 does not work now. All incoming emails are now transferred to my personal Google account. Now I can not send business emails inclusive of business headers and footers since Outlook is erroring on send/receive. And all my history of email organization on Outlook is gone. Entity Framework - refresh objects from database

I'm having trouble with refreshing objects in my database. I have an two PC's and two applications. On the first PC, there's an application which communicates with my database and adds some data to Measurements table. On my other PC, there's an application which retrives the latest Measurement under a timer, so it should retrive measurements added by the application on my first PC too. The problem is it doesn't. On my application start, it caches all the data from database and never get new data added. I use Refresh() method which works well when I change any of the cached data, but it doesn't refresh newly added data. How do I start DB2 on an Amazon EC2 Volume?

I've got an instance of DB2 installed as part of an IBM WebSphere Portal development AMI on the Amazon EC2 cloud. Its installed a separate, persistent file system from the rest of the AMI. Yesterday, the AMI was terminated, and DB2 went down as part of that. It was not shut down cleanly, just terminated. Today, I am trying to restart the WebSphere portal server, which needs to connect to the DB2 instance. But the DB2 instance is down. So I need to restart my DB2 instance, but how to do that is not immediately obvious. Can someone tell me what I need to run to get it going again? OS is SuSE Linux, DB2 version is 9.1

I got a simple cloud server and thought it would be nice to have mac native afp Volumes accesss. Installed Netatalk and this seems to work pretty nice. No sensitive data or something but I don't like to wake up someday and have my www docs rm-rfed by some kid h4x0r. Q1: Is afp encrypted? Q2: How can I make it (semi)secure? Q3: Does VPN makes sense for this? Q4: What would you do to get afp working over net? Opening any service meant for Lan only is a basic flaw, i know - but me be ignorant about it. According to Apple Dev only the authentication is encrypted or am I mssing something?

SQLite for personal use

What are the applications for your personal use that needs a small database like SQLite? I am thinking of trying a few popular databases and SQLite is surely the first one I am planning to try since I know barely nothing about database except some simple programming years ago. I learned that SQLite is good for personal use. But embarrassingly I do not see any application except maybe managing my list of phone numbers/contact info, which has probably a few hundred items. What's your experience? FYI, I use EndNote for my reference and softcopy of books, and I feel iTunes' music/media management is ok since I am not a frequent user anyway. And others? I do lots of coding, but I just use some simple etags tools for that. And I pretty much use .txt file (sometimes in the asciidoc style) for my notes. I have quite a bunch of notes, but not that many either. So, really, what are your personal applications that need a small database instead of existing tools and plain text files?

Protecting an Application's Memory From Tampering

We are adding AES 256 bit encryption to our server and client applications for encrypting the TCP/IP traffic containing sensitive information. We will be rotating the keys daily. Because of that, the keys will be stored in memory with the applications. Key distribution process: Each server and client will have a list of initial Key Encryption Key's (KEK) by day If the client has just started up or the server has just started up, the client will request the daily key from the server using the initial key. The server will respond with the daily key, encrypted with the initial key. The daily key is a randomly generated set of alphanumeric characters. We are using AES 256 bit encryption. All subsequent communications will be encrypted using that daily key. Nightly, the client will request the new daily key from the server using the current daily key as the current KEK. After the client gets the new key, the new daily key will replace the old daily key. Is it possible for another bad application to gain access to this memory illegally or is this protected in Windows? The key will not be written to a file, only stored in a variable in memory. If an application can access the memory illegally, how can you protect the memory from tampering? We are using C++ and XP (Vista/7 may be an option in the future so I don't know if that changes the answer).

I've been tasked with checking the installation of some software on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine in the cloud, within two scenarios: There is no domain, the software will use local users and groups for authentication There is a domain, the software will use domain users and groups for authentication I've done part 1, but I'm puzzled about part 2. I've just installed the Active Directory Domain Services role on the server, so now I have a domain of one computer. When I look in Active Directory Users and Computers, I see all my original local users and groups. Have they now been 'promoted' to domain users? Or do I not have any domain users yet? Is there a way I can tell the difference between domain users and local users now? Thanks

How to disable selective keys on the keyboard?

I'd like to write an application which disables certain keys on the keyboard while it's working. More specifically I'm interested in keys that might make the application loose focus (like ALT+TAB, WinKey, Ctrl+Shift+Esc, etc.) The need for this is has to do with babies/animals bashing wildly at the keyboard. :) My first idea was to use SetWindowsHookEx, however I ran into a problem. Since I need a global hook, the procedure would have to reside in a .DLL which would get injected in all active applications. But a .DLL can be either 64-bit or 32-bit, not both. And on a 64-bit system there are both types of applications. I guess then that I must write two copies of the hook .DLL - one for 32-bit and the other for 64-bit. And then I'd also have to launch two copies of the application as well, because the application first has to load the DLL itself before it can pass it on to SetWindowsHookEx(). Sounds pretty clumsy and awkward. Is there perhaps a better way? Or maybe I've misunderstood something?

Open a new browser window from embeded Internet Explorer

I am working on a Windows desktop app (C++) that has an embedded Internet Explorer page. I'm working on the html page that is displayed in the There is not a back button control, so one of the requests is that links clicked on in the page should open the link in a browser window. It can open the link in the users default browser or in IE. Is this possible? I realize that this is not possible because javascript is in a sandbox and cannot touch outside applications. I'm thinking there might be a way because it is using the IE. I have tried the two methods that have worked for me in the past. Using jquery, I've tried these two approaches, but neither work in the app. They both work fine in normal browsers. Using target="_blank" $( "a" ).attr( "target", "_blank" ); The other is using window.open: $( "a" ).click( function() { window.open( $( this ).attr( "href" ) ); } ); I'm afraid that writing windows desktop applications is outside my area of expertise, so I cannot give more information regarding that side of the issue.

I hope this is the right forum for posting this question. I have a client who wants to move to Office 365. They are currently running on a trial of Office 365 E3 plan. My staff are now also using Office 365 E3 via the internal use licences provided as part of the MS Cloud Partner benefits. We've search high and low, spoken to about 15 different people at Office 365 Support, as well as my local distributor's MS Product Manager, but we cannot seem to find out exactly how to purchase/subscribe to the Exchange Hosted Encryption (EHE) service, or how to configure/use it from Office 365. Another part of the question - is it possible to enlarge the Linux-filesystem by not re-installing it and using the free space of home directory? Is it possible to do? CentOS default installation gave 60% disk space to tmpfs partition

I installed a CentOS server which will be used for xen hypervisor. The server has two Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 and 148G memory. The OS was installed on a 120G SSD drive. After the installation, I found that the tmpfs partition occupied about 60% of the drive. Even though I don't need much space for the OS, will there be any problem with 71G tmp partition? Options for PCI-DSS on AWS - file integrity monitoring and intrusion detection

I need to deploy some file integrity monitoring and intrusion detections software on AWS instances. I really wanted to use OSSEC, however it does not work well in an environment where servers can auto deploy and shut down based on load, because it requires server managed keys to be generated. Including the agent in the AMI will not allow monitoring as soon as it comes up because of that. There are many options out there, and several are listed in other posts on this site, however none that I've seen so far deal with the unique problems inherent in AWS or cloud based deployments in general. Can anyone point me at some products, preferably open source, that we might use to cover those portions of PCI DSS that require this software? Has anyone else achieved this on AWS?

Meraki's Accounting-Requests to RADIUS server

I'm running a RADIUS server with some Meraki APs, the process of Authentications is fine... But it seems that the Meraki Cloud Controller is just sending the authentication packets and not the accounting requests. I've tested the RADIUS sending accounting requests with the radclient tool (locally) and it worked. I think that maybe my RADIUS server is ignoring the accounting requests from the MCC because there are some Vendor Specific Attributes that my RADIUS doesn't know. should I add a Meraki's dictionary to my RADIUS configurations? I'm kind of desperate, any idea?
