    I got three UTF-8 stings: hello, world hello, ?? hello, ?rld I only want the first 10 chars so that the bracket in one column: [hello, wor] [hello, ? ] [hello, ?r] In console: width('??')==width('worl') width('? ')==width('wor') #a white space behind '?' python's format() doesn't help when UTF-8 chars mixed in >>> for s in ['[{0:<{1}.{1}}]'.format(s, 10) for s in ['hello, world', 'hello, ??', 'hello, ?rld']]: ... print(s) ... [hello, wor] [hello, ?? ] [hello, ?rl] So, I wonder if there is a standard way to do the UTF-8 padding staff?

    I'm looking for the way to get the direct link from mediafire. By default, when a user visits a download link, he will be presented with a download page where he has to wait for the download to be processed and then a link will appear. I googled and found a VB.NET 2008 solution to this using WebBrowser WB http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?t=556681 It works pretty well but I'm tired of pop-up windows and the loading speed. So, I wonder if there is a solution to this problem? (a non WB solution ^^) Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hey there, I have written a program that works well in C that converts non-readable ASCII to their character values. I would appreciate if a C master? would show me a better way of doing it that I have currently done, mainly this section: if (isascii(ch)) { switch (ch) { case 0: printControl("NUL"); break; case 1: printControl("SOH"); break; .. etc (32 in total) case default: putchar(ch); break; } } Is it normal to make a switch that big?     jsfddle page I am currently using bootstrap modal , which is a jquery plugin to create a popup box, here is its documentation, only few lines, so it takes a minute to read only I encountered problem in 3 aspect : How can i define the size of the modal(pop up box)? I tried: <div class="modal" id="myModal" style="width:800px;height:900px;"> but it does not display correctly. And how can i hide the modal by default, it currently display when i enter the page I tried the method in doucment $(document).ready(function() { $('#myModal').modal("hide"); } ); but not working as well.     I'm thinking about making a physical controller (device?) with knobs, buttons, and LEDs. I'd like to interact with it using Java (respond to the knobs, light up LEDs, etc). The reason I mention Java is two-fold: first, I know Java well1. Second, I've written the rest of the program I need to interface with in Java (though there are ways to talk to the Java program from another language). I would like the device to connect via USB and be (computer-)platform independent. I haven't the slightest idea of where to start, except to start reading the Arduino website. Is this my best/only option? Is there something better suited for communicating with Java? Note: I know that Arduino has something to do with Java (not sure what), but it seems like code must be written in a subset of C. How would I get moving on this topic? 1 - No laughter, please.
