- by Cairo
Hey I'm trying to get a CFStream connection going over 3G. I can get it working over wifi using the host name, but when I try to connect directly to the ip address it fails. Is there a guide out there on how to connect over 3G? Thanks ASH

• [obj-c] autorelease problem

Why the NSArray allocated with arrayWithObjects dealloc automatically if already used by BObject object?? in teory NSArray must remain allocated all the BObject life time... [[BObject alloc] initObjectName:@"oneObject" states: [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [[State alloc] initStateName:@"stand_front" singleImg:[NSArray arrayWithObjects:[UIImage imageNamed:@"front_1.png"], nil]], [[State alloc] initStateName:@"front_walking" frames: [NSArray arrayWithObjects: [UIImage imageNamed:@"front_1.png"], [UIImage imageNamed:@"front_2.png"], [UIImage imageNamed:@"front_3.png"], [UIImage imageNamed:@"front_4.png"], [UIImage imageNamed:@"front_5.png"], [UIImage imageNamed:@"front_6.png"], [UIImage imageNamed:@"front_7.png"], [UIImage imageNamed:@"front_8.png"], nil] duration:0.8 repeat:0], nil] isSolid:TRUE];

• Why is my toolbar not visible when in landscape mode?

- by mr-sk
My aim was to get the application functioning in both landscape and portrait mode, and all I could figure out to do it was this code below. The app was working fine in portrait, but when switched to landscape, the text wouldn't expand (to the right) to fill up the additional space. I made sure my springs/struts where set, and that the parents had "allowResizing" selected in IB. Here's what I've done instead: - (void) willAnimateSecondHalfOfRotationFromInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)fromInterfaceOrientation duration: (NSTimeInterval)duration { UIInterfaceOrientation toInterfaceOrientation = self.interfaceOrientation; if (toInterfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait) { self.myView.frame = CGRectMake(0.0, 0.0, 320.0, 480.0); } else { self.myView.frame = CGRectMake(0.0, 0.0, 480.0, 256.0); } } Note that it looks just fine in portrait mode (toolbar appears): But the toolbar is gone in landscape mode: Any ideas?

• Push/Present Modal View Controller

- by Yakattak
I have a table in my view controller (let's call it TVC1). I have rows in TVC1 that are used so the user can input some more data in addition to the data on TVC1. So, when someone taps a specific row in TVC1, it will show another view controller (let's call it TVC2). However, when TVC2 is shown, all of the data in TVC1 is cleared. How can I save the data in TVC1? Should I do it through the app delegate? DescriptionInputViewController *descriptionController = [[DescriptionInputViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"DescriptionInputView" bundle:nil]; [self presentModalViewController:navController animated:YES]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:descriptionController animated:YES]; [descriptionController release];

• Using undecorated UiNavigationBar

- by Nicsoft
Hello, I would like to use UINavigationBar without decoration. I.e. I would like to create my own custom buttons and link those to the same actions (e.g. back) as the navigation items were linked to and have no bar presented at the top. I was told that one should use navigation bar even though graphically you should design the interaction yourself. How do I go about doing this? I am quite new to navigation bar to start with... If there is some tutorial you can direct me to it would be great (that is for using nav-bar without decoration). Thanks in advance! Regards, Niklas

• How to determine the size (in bytes) of a file downloading using NSURLConnection?

- by RexOnRoids
I need to know the size of the file I am downloading (in bytes) into my app using NSURLConnection (GET). Here is my bytes recieved code below if it helps. What I need to know is how to get the filesize in bytes so that I can use it to show a UIProgressView. - (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)theConnection didReceiveData:(NSData *)data // A delegate method called by the NSURLConnection as data arrives. We just // write the data to the file. { #pragma unused(theConnection) NSInteger dataLength; const uint8_t * dataBytes; NSInteger bytesWritten; NSInteger bytesWrittenSoFar; assert(theConnection == self.connection); dataLength = [data length]; dataBytes = [data bytes]; bytesWrittenSoFar = 0; do { bytesWritten = [self.fileStream write:&dataBytes[bytesWrittenSoFar] maxLength:dataLength - bytesWrittenSoFar]; assert(bytesWritten != 0); if (bytesWritten == -1) { [self _stopReceiveWithStatus:@"File write error"]; break; } else { bytesWrittenSoFar += bytesWritten; } while (bytesWrittenSoFar != dataLength); }

• nsdata to nsstring to nsdata

- by Jayshree
Hello everybody. I am calling the webservices. The web service returns data in xml format. Now the problem is the xml data is not being received in proper format. In place of "<", "" it returns in html format like-(<) and (>) . So i assigned the xmldata to a NsMutableString and replaced the escape characters so that the format of xml data is proper. Then i reassigned the NSMutableString to NSData so that i can parse the tags. but the problem is the xmlparser stops right where the xml data is. Where i replaced the tags. it doesnt go further. can anybody make me understand what is going on???? This is the xml response from webservice that i called. <SOAP-ENV:Envelope xmlns:SOAP-ENV="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:SOAP-ENC="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/"> <SOAP-ENV:Body> <ns1:GetCustomerInfoResponse xmlns:ns1="http://aa.somewebservice.com/phpwebservice"> <return xsi:type="xsd:string"> <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><customer><id>1</id><customername>Hitesh</customername><phonenumber>98989898</phonenumber></customer> </return> </ns1:GetCustomerInfoResponse> </SOAP-ENV:Body> </SOAP-ENV:Envelope> And this is after i replaced the tags. <SOAP-ENV:Envelope xmlns:SOAP-ENV="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:SOAP-ENC="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/"> <SOAP-ENV:Body> <ns1:GetCustomerInfoResponse xmlns:ns1="http://a.somewebservice.com/phpwebservice"> <return xsi:type="xsd:string"> <customer>
<customername>Hitesh</customername><phonenumber>98989898</phonenumber></customer> </return> </ns1:GetCustomerInfoResponse> </SOAP-ENV:Body></SOAP-ENV:Envelope> Now the problem is while parsing the parser only goes upto return tag. And then it is stuck there. It doesnt go any further. So wat do i do? anybody care to help me?

• How to compare two times in milliseconds precision?

- by Marcos Issler
I have a subtitle text file that works with standart srt format 00:00:00,000 Hour, minutes, seconds, milliseconds. I want to create a timer to update the subtitle screen and check the current time to know what subtitle show on screen. Which is the best to use? NSTimeInterval, NSDate? I think the best is to convert all to times to milliseconds number and compare. But NSTimeInterval works with seconds, not milliseconds. Some clue? Marcos

• [[UIDevice currentDevice] orientation] always null

- by Toby Wilson
As per the title. Calling [[UIDevice currentDevice] BeginGeneratingDeviceOrientationNotifications] has no effect. DidRotateToInterfaceOrientation etc events are working fine, but I need to be able to poll the device orientation arbitrarily. How can I fix/do this? The long story: I have a tab application with a navigation controller on each tab. The root view of tab number one is a graph that goes full screen when the orientation changes to landscape; however this needs to be checked whenever the view appears as the orientation change could have occurred elsewhere, so I was hoping to poll the orientation state whenever this view appears.

• UITableView not getting populated

- by jayshree430
Hi. I have a peculiar problem. I created a normal Objective c class called SampleTable. I then extended UITableView instead of NSObject. Then in the initWithFrame constructor i initialized the table. I also made a NSMutableArray object for the datasource. I also conformed UITableViewDelegate and UITableViewDatasource. I have overridden the necessary methods also. Now i made an object of this class in another class, and added the object as a subview. The tableView is getting drawn according to the CGRectMake() coordinates i gave to the initWithFrame constructor. But it is not getting populated with the data. I dnt know what the problem is . Can plz someone help me. SampleTable.h #import @interface SampleTable : UITableView { NSMutableArray *ItemArray; } @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray *ItemArray; -(NSMutableArray *) displayItemArray; @end SampleTable.m #import "SampleTable.h" @implementation SampleTable @synthesize ItemArray; -(id)initWithFrame:(CGRect)frm { [super initWithFrame:frm]; self.delegate=self; self.dataSource=self; [self reloadData]; return self; } -(NSMutableArray *) displayItemArray { if(ItemArray==nil) { ItemArray=[[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"1",@"2",@"3",@"4",@"5",nil]; } return ItemArray; } (NSInteger)numberOfSectionsInTableView:(UITableView *)tableView { return 1; } (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section { return [ItemArray count]; } (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell"; UITableViewCell *cell= [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell==nil) { cell = [[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleSubtitle reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; [cell autorelease]; } NSString *temp=[self.ItemArray objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; cell.textLabel.text = temp; return cell; } (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { NSLog(@"didselect"); } -(void) dealloc { [ItemArray release]; [super dealloc]; } @end

• EXC_BAD_ACCESS NSUrlConnection

- by Lars
Hi all, i got an EXC_BAD_ACCESS when i perform the last line of the function (webData). -(void)requestSoap{ NSString *requestUrl = @"http://www.website.com/webservice.php"; NSString *soapMessage = @"the soap message"; //website and soapmessage are valid in original code. NSError **error; NSURLResponse *response; //Convert parameter string to url NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:requestUrl]; NSMutableURLRequest *theRequest = [NSMutableURLRequest requestWithURL:url cachePolicy:NSURLRequestReloadIgnoringCacheData timeoutInterval:10]; NSString *msgLength = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%d", [soapMessage length]]; //Create an XML message for webservice [theRequest addValue: @"text/xml; charset=utf-8" forHTTPHeaderField:@"Content-Type"]; [theRequest addValue: msgLength forHTTPHeaderField:@"Content-Length"]; [theRequest setHTTPMethod:@"POST"]; [theRequest setHTTPBody: [soapMessage dataUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]]; NSData *webData = [NSURLConnection sendSynchronousRequest:theRequest returningResponse:&response error:error]; } I tried not to release a thing, because what i read on the net is it's almost always a memory thing. • How to fetch distinct values in Core Data?

- by Andy
So in looking through Core Data Snippets, I found the following code: ... [request setEntity:entity]; [request setResultType:NSDictionaryResultType]; [request setReturnsDistinctValues:YES]; [request setPropertiesToFetch:[NSArray arrayWithObject:@"<#Attribute name#>"]]; // Execute the fetch NSError *error; id requestedValue = nil; // WTF? This isn't defined or used anywhere NSArray *objects = [managedObjectContext executeFetchRequest:request error:&error]; if (objects == nil) { // handle the error } This is great and seems perfect for what I need...but how does one actually use it? I assume since it's returning dictionaries, I need a key to get at the values - but where's the key defined? Is that the "id requestedValue = nil" line? If so, how does "requestedValue" become the key? Xcode gives me a compiler warning about an unused variable at the "requestedValue" declaration. I feel like I'm missing something here. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

• Nice shadow effect in text (UISegmentedControl)

- by Matthias
Hi, I would like to bring some color to the texts of my UISegmentedControl. So, I've searched a bit about this topic, but it seems to be not possible out-of-the-box. But I found this nice blog post (link text), how to build an image out of a custom text and then assign it to the segemented control. Works fine, but the text in these created images do not have this nice little shadow effect as the original ones. So, does anyone know, how to create such a shadow effect? I guess, Apple does the same (building an image for the text) with the standard segmenented control. Thanks for your help. Regards Matthias

• error: expected specifier-qualifier-list before...in Objective C ?

- by Ridwan
Hi guys. Whenever I build the following code, I get the error above. //Controller.h #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> #import "PolygonShape.h" #import "PolygonView.h"; @interface Controller : NSObject { IBOutlet UIButton *decreaseButton; IBOutlet UIButton *increaseButton; IBOutlet UILabel *numberOfSidesLabel; IBOutlet PolygonShape *shape; IBOutlet PolygonView *shapeView; } - (IBAction)decrease; - (IBAction)increase; - (void)awakeFromNib; @end //Controller.m #import "Controller.h" @implementation Controller @end However, when I replace the import statement and put a forward class reference instead, the code compiles. //Controller.h #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> #import "PolygonShape.h" @class PolygonView; @interface Controller : NSObject { IBOutlet UIButton *decreaseButton; IBOutlet UIButton *increaseButton; IBOutlet UILabel *numberOfSidesLabel; IBOutlet PolygonShape *shape; IBOutlet PolygonView *shapeView; } - (IBAction)decrease; - (IBAction)increase; - (void)awakeFromNib; @end //Controller.m #import "Controller.h" #import "PolygonView.h" @implementation Controller @end Can anyone explain?

• MKMapView Not Loading When Called on an NSThread?

- by Chris
I am creating a MKMapView in a method named "generateMap". From inside viewDidLoad, this works: [self generateMap]; but this causes the map to quickly load and then disappear, leaving only the blank grey grid: [NSThread detachNewThreadSelector:@selector(spinTheSpinner) toTarget:self withObject:nil]; Any ideas why this might be happening when I call the method through a thread?

• How to add lowercase field to NSURLRequest header field?

- by Drewsmits
I'm getting pretty frustrated figuring out how to add a lowercase header field to an NSMutableURLRequest. NSMutableURLRequest *urlRequest = [NSMutableURLRequest requestWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:MyURLString]]; [urlRequest setValue:@"aValue" forHTTPHeaderField:@"field"]; In the example above, "field" get's switched to "Field," since the header field names are case insensitive. I wouldn't think this should happen, but it does. The API I am working with is case sensitive, so my GET request is ignored. Is there any way to override the case switch? Thanks

• XCode newb -- #include can't find my file

- by morgancodes
I'm trying to get a third party audio library (STK) working inside XCode. Along with the standard .h files, many of the implimentation files include a file called SKINI.msg. SKINI.msg is in the same directory as all of the header files. The header files are getting included fine, but the compiler complains that it can't find SKINI.msg. What do I need to do to get XCode to happily include SKINI.msg?

• NSArray in NSArray do not return the image I want

- by Tibi

NSUInteger i; //NSMutableArray *textures = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithCapacity:kNumTextures]; //NSMutableArray *texturesHighlighted = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithCapacity:kNumTextures]; NSMutableArray *textures= [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; for (i = 1; i <= kNumTextures; i++) { NSString *imageName = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"texture%d.png", i]; NSString *imageNameHighlighted = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"texture%d_select.png", i]; UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:imageName]; UIImage *imageHighlighted = [UIImage imageNamed:imageNameHighlighted]; //NSArray *pics = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:(UIImage)image,(UIImage)imageHighlighted, nil]; NSArray *pics = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:image, imageHighlighted, nil]; [textures addObject:pics]; [pics release]; } //select randomly the position of the picture that will be represented twice on the board NSInteger randomTexture = arc4random()%([textures count]+1); //extract image corresponding to the randomly selected index //remove corresponding pictures from textures array NSArray *coupleTexture = [textures objectAtIndex:randomTexture]; [textures removeObjectAtIndex:randomTexture]; //create the image array containing 1 couple + all other pictures NSMutableArray *texturesBoard = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithCapacity:kNumPotatoes]; [texturesBoard addObject:coupleTexture]; [texturesBoard addObject:coupleTexture]; [coupleTexture release]; NSArray *pics = [[NSArray alloc] init]; for (pics in textures) { [texturesBoard addObject:pics]; } [pics release]; //shuffle the textures //[texturesBoard shuffledMutableArray]; //Array with masks NSMutableArray *masks= [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; for (i = 1; i <= kNumMasks; i++) { NSString *maskName = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"mask%d.png", i]; UIImage *mask = [UIImage imageNamed:maskName]; //NSArray *pics = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:mask, nil]; [masks addObject:mask]; //[pics release]; [maskName release]; [mask release]; } //Now mask all images in texturesBoard NSMutableArray *list = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; for (i = 0; i <= kNumMasks-1; i++) { //take on image couple from textures NSArray *imgArray = [texturesBoard objectAtIndex:i]; UIImage *mask = [masks objectAtIndex:i]; //mask it with the mask un the array at corresponding index UIImage *img1 =(UIImage *) [imgArray objectAtIndex:0]; UIImage *img2 =(UIImage *) [imgArray objectAtIndex:1]; UIImage *picsMasked = [self maskImage:(UIImage *)img1 withMask:(UIImage *)mask]; UIImage *picsHighlightedMasked = [self maskImage:(UIImage *)img2 withMask:(UIImage *)mask]; //Init image with highlighted status TapDetectingImageView *imageView = [[TapDetectingImageView alloc] initWithImage:picsMasked imageHighlighted:picsHighlightedMasked]; [list addObject:imageView]; } The problem here is that : img1 and img2, are not images but rather NSArray with multiple entries. Ican't figure why... dos any fresh spirit here could provide me with some clue to fix. maaany thanks.

• Sorting arrays with cyclic compares (infinite loop?)

- by Tiago
Hi, I have some objects that have 3 sorting options: quality, quatity and a compare against the other object, sorted by that order. - (NSComparisonResult) compare: (MyObject *) obj { if (self.quality > obj.quality) return NSOrderedAscending; else if (self.quality < obj.quality) return NSOrderedDescending; if (self.quantity > obj.quantity) return NSOrderedAscending; else if (self.quantity < obj.quantity) return NSOrderedDescending; if ([self betterThan: obj]) return NSOrderedAscending; if ([obj betterThan: self]) return NSOrderedDescending; return NSOrderedSame; } My problem is that, the betterThan: method might cause a cyclic compare if the objects have the same quality and quantity, and I want to return any sort order in that case. For example, A, B and C have the same quality/quantity, but A betterThan: B => YES B betterThan: C => YES C betterThan: A => YES Solutions? Thanks.

• How to push UIViewController into UINavigationController from seperate UIView of different UIViewCon

- by Kundan
I have a UIViewController(AbcViewController) with NavigationController.AbcViewController uses UIView(AbcView) as its view. AbcView has a UITableView. I have set This TableView's datasource in AbcViewController and delegate in its SuperView i.e. AbcView. How will I push another UIViewController(XyzViewcontroller) into navigationController when I select a row in this table because it gives "error: request for member 'navigationController' in something not a structure or union" when I do this : [self.navigationController pushViewController:xyzViewcontroller animated:TRUE]; I also did this : AbcViewController *parentVC; [parentVC.navigationController pushViewController:xyzViewcontroller animated:TRUE]; Though it builds successfully but XyzViewcontroller's view does not appear. It does not push XyzViewcontroller's view into navigationController. Thanks For Any Help.

• UIWebView Page Control

Hi, I would like to use a UIWebView to display some files (PDF, PPT, DOC) and would like to have the ability to scroll using external controls (ie a couple of buttons that, when pressed skip back and forward a page) and display the current page in a UITextView. Is this possible? I have no experience with javascript, but a friend of mine has suggested that this might be a useful approach. Is his suggestion valid? JP
