  • Resize a new database to predicted maximum size

    Currently I have a SQL Server database which is about 2 Gb. I know over the next year it's going to grow to a maximum of about 10Gb. Hard drive space is not an issue in the slightest. Is there a down side to resizing the datafile to 20Gb now, then defragmenting the hard drive? Should I resize the log file to 1Gb as well? Something ridiculously large so that fragmentation doesn't happen there either. With this question I would like to avoid the datafile becoming fragmented on the disk itself, but I don't want to negatively impact performance.

  • Will the VMs on the ESXi cluster be running after disconnection from the network?

    What will happen if I disconnect the ESXi cluster configured with HA from the switch(I need to change the power source on the main switch) and there is no management port redundancy? I'm going to disable the host monitoring and VM monitoring within HA settings, and connect to the switch after it boots up. Will the virtual machines be running if I disconnect the hosts from the network so they will not see any other ESXi host? I hope everything will work fine and the hosts will join the cluster after they connect to the network again, but I would like to be sure ..

  • How do you redirect pages from a subdirectory up one level to the root directory

    I have recently moved all the content on my website from being in the www.mysite.com/shop directory to being in the root directory. This means that now I need to redirect any request to visit a page with the /shop directory back to the same page in the root directory eg. www.mysite.com/shop/categories/washroom to www.mysite.com/categories/washroom This needs to happen with all pages in my site that were previously using the /shop directory. The closest thing to a solution that I have found so far is the following code RedirectMatch ^/shop/.* http://www.mysite.com/ however this redirects all pages back to the homepage instead of to the relevant matching page without the /shop. Can someone please point me in the right direction, or if this has already been answered in here can you please post the link to the answer.

  • "No such file or directory"?

    Ok, so I have a VDS laying around, and I thought I would turn it into a TF2 game server. When I connect to my server through PuTTY, and use wget to download the package "hldsupdatetool.bin" from Steampowered.com. I go to run it and it says "No such file or directory found". When I use "ls" to see what files are in directory, it lists "hldsupdatetool.bin" as being in the directory. So, why is it saying it's not there? This has been a headache for the past 2 days.   • Is data transfer response related to cable bandwidth limit?

    Hello, Before this, I'm using shared 100Mbps bandwidth. Its fast enough. And now, the server running dedicated 10Mbps bandwidth. When running 10Mbps, it takes more time to completely load the same page. The server bandwidth usage is small, with average less than 5Mbps. (I can see some website hosted at same data center loads very fast.)

    Whenever I enable TCP/IP connections on my SQL Server Express 2008 database server running on Windows XP SP3, I cannot restart the service, it simply states "The request failed or did respond in a timely fashion".   • SVNNotify Where is it? how do I find it?

    I am on ubuntu. ok first of all I am running a post-commit script. I need the path to svnnotify to run it. The path the turotial I am reading has it as /usr/local/bin/svnnotify but nothing is in that location on my computer. I tried it anyways and I get something like: Warning post-commit hook failed: not found so I think I need to replace /usr/local/bin/svnnotify with the correct path to svnnotify. Well I do a search (Places>Search for Files) for svnnotify and nothing comes up. I know svnnotify is installed becuase if I open a command line and run svnnotify it tells me I am missing the required path argument. So how can it be installed if its not in the file system anywhere? I don't really know how linux works, its very new to me, so I am confused. Is there something I am missing?

    On Linux the ssh command has a -t option whose man page reads: Force pseudo-tty allocation. This can be used to execute arbitrary screen-based programs on a remote machine, which can be very useful, e.g. when implementing menu services. Multiple -t options force tty allocate, even if ssh has no local tty. I would like to use this same option with PuTTY on Windows. In particular, I can see that PuTTY has a bunch of options under: Category - Connection - SSH - TTY and suspect it might be possible to achieve the same behavior via some of the (NUMEROUS!) settings found on this screen.   • Printer irregularly producing garbage output

    Every now and then instead of getting the proper output we get numerous pages, mostly with just a single line, of output which appears to be the raw PCL. My theory is that this happens when the first byte or two of the document is somehow not received by the printer, which then doesn't know how to interpret the rest and does it's best by spitting it out as text. This is a problem I've seen many times over the years but has been popping up more often since we upgraded to Win 7 64 bit, which introduced a number of headaches because of the HP lack of real support for 64 bits. It also appears to happen most often when printing PDF files. We have tried several different PDF readers in addition to Adobe's own but that hasn't helped. While we mainly use HP printers, and the problem is not limited to any particular model, I've also seen it happen on other brands, albeit to a lesser extent. I've also been unable to discern a difference between printers used via a print server or those connected directly by IP address. It also happens to USB attached printers. Because of the erratic nature of this problem there is precious little I can think of to try and debug it, so I'm after any ideas that might help to eliminate it.

  • Configuring a backup DNS server

    I would like to setup a backup DNS server. I have added all my name servers in my domain name panel. (ns1.domain.com, ns2.domain.com, etc ...) If a person would try to go to domain.com and the first name server would fail, will it automatically try and use ns2.domain.com? All my DNS servers have the same master zones configured. Is that the way to go? Is it that easy or am I missing something here? :)

    Let's say I have a web-server on my internal network which is behind a NAT router. I have my external DNS for the “xyz.com” domain configured with an A record for “foo” that points to my router's public address. I want my internal network clients to resolve foo.xyz.com to the internal address. However, this is the only xyz.com record that should point to an internal address. Do I need to create a primary zone for xyz.com and mirror all the records from my external zone with the exception of “foo” (this is what I am doing now), or is there a better way?

  • Download resume support blocked by isp?

    Can ISP block resume support for downloads ? I'm using IDM (internet download manager) to download of the internet from resume supported websites, yet I am unable to resume downloads. I tried different computers with the same result. Turned off firewall, didn't have any effect i was able to download with no issues until a couple of days ago. Another thing i noticed is that before IDM used to try to connect to several connections to speed up my download, but now it can only connect to one connection. Also i tried to download using my vpn, and i was able to download and resume downloads with no problem.

    Hi there! I'm trying to figure out a structure for a hosted application that i'm working on. I've got a domain lets call it app.company.com (a sub-domain company.com of course) that is setup to redirect to my IIS 6 web server. I would like to set up one website in IIS for each client that will use this application. And have the URL schema be like this: app.company.com/clientA -- would point to ClientA website in IIS app.company.com/clientB -- would point to ClientB website in IIS Do you guys have any pointers or best practices for my scenario?

  • Multiple SSL domains on the same IP address and same port?

    This is a Canonical Question about Hosting multiple SSL websites on the same IP. I was under the impression that each SSL Certificate required it's own unique IP Address/Port combination. But the answer to a previous question I posted is at odds with this claim. Using information from that Question, I was able to get multiple SSL certificates to work on the same IP address and on port 443. I am very confused as to why this works given the assumption above and reinforced by others that each SSL domain website on the same server requires its own IP/Port. I am suspicious that I did something wrong. Can multiple SSL Certificates be used this way?

    Colleagues, I have need to run a script/program on certain basic OS level events. In particular when a file in Windows is opened. The open may be read-only or to edit, and may be initiated by a number of means, either from windows explorer (open or ), be selected from a viewing or editing application from the native file chooser, or drag-n-drop into an editing or viewing application. Further, i need the trigger to "hold" the event from completing the action until the runtime on the program has completed. The event handler program may return a pass state, or fail state. If fail state has been returned, then the event must disallow the initially requested action. Lastly, I need to add to the file in question a property or attribute that will contain metadata that will be used by the above event trigger handler program to make a determination as to the pass/fail condition that will ultimately determine if the user is permitted to open the file.   • Windows 8 freezes on startup when intel VT-d is enabled

    I don't know what to make of this situation: Windows 8 freezes after about 3 seconds after booting to the log in screen. The only way i have been able to avoid the freeze, is if i set VT-d disabled VT-d enabled, but Nvidia drivers uninstalled (running on integrated graphics) VT-d enabled, Nvidia drivers installed, Hyper-V feature enabled My goal is to get Windows 8 running with VMWare (ie. Hyper-V has to stay disabled), VT-d and the latest NVidia drivers. Specs: 32 GB of ram Intel Core i7-2760QM NVidia Quadro 1000M Intel 520 SSD 480GB Maybe somebody has experience with this kind of a situation ?

    I have one physical server that runs: an Apache (httpd) server another web server (let's say Tomcat for sake of argument) on port 1234 Can I configure the Apache server to act as a proxy for SSL traffic, while keeping the application server blissfully unaware of SSL? What I imagine is: Traffic to http://myserevr.com/app is redirected to https://myserver.com/app Traffic to https://myserver.com/app is proxied to the application server. My SSL certificate is only installed on the Apache server, not on the Application server Other traffic to the Apache server (http://myserver.com/anotherapp) is served directly from the Apache server What's the best setup to achieve this?   • Windows 7: How to stop/start service from commandline (like services.msc does it)?

    I have developed a program in Java that uses on a local SQL Server instance to store its data. On some installations the SQL Server instance is not running sometimes. Users can fix this problem by manually starting the SQL Server instance (via services.msc). I am thinking about automating this task: the software would check if the database server is reachable, if not try to (re)start it. The problem is that on the same user account the Services can be stopped /started via services.msc (without any UAC prompt), but not via (non-elevated) command line. The operating system seems to treat services.msc differently: c:\>sc start mssql$db1 [SC] StartService: OpenService FEHLER 5: Zugriff verweigert (Access denied) c:\>net start mssql$db1 Systemfehler 5 aufgetreten. Zugriff verweigert (Access denied) So the question is: how can I stop/start the service from a java-program/command line without having my users to use services.msc (preferrably via on-board-tools)
