• Can't create a new HomeGroup in Windows 8

  I'm trying to create a new HomeGroup in Windows 8 for 2 new PCs with Windows 8 installed so that I can share printers etc. Both PCs use Microsoft Account to log in - a Microsoft Account I set up about a year ago with one of the early beta's with a PC that's since been repaved with the RTM of Windows 8 When I click on "HomeGroup" in the "Metro" control panel the "Create" option is not there. Instead I'm told that "HomeGroup" already exists on the PC I've since repaved and renamed and I can join it by entering the password. I have no recollection of what the password might have been and in any event that PC doesn't exist, but there is no way to say "That group doesn't exist anymore just create me a new one dammit". Even using the old Control Panel the "HomeGroup" nonsense persists with the only option being "Join" that needs a password. How do I "start afresh" and create a new HomeGroup that I can use to connect my Windows 8 and Windows 7 PCs and use common printers, network drives etc.

• Is there a way to enable metro on a 1024x600 netbook?

  Windows 8 Consumer Preview works great on my 1024x600 netbook but, for some strange reason, Microsoft decided to provide its Metro interface only to 1024x768 and up screens. "Strange" because Android can work with as little as 240x320 screens, and I know that Microsoft is presumably targeting smartphones, too, in its upcoming Windows 8. The interface itself is there with all the panels etc. but when one of the rectangles is pressed, Windows 8 just refuses to launch any application (even Internet Explorer), except for Windows Explorer. Looks to me like this isn't a real hardware limitation but some arbitrary flag set in the registry. Is there any way or tweak to enable the Metro interface on 1024x600 screen?

• How would you TDD the functionality of getting the corresponding process of a running windows service?

  Purpose Over the last year or more I've been learning unit testing via books I've read recently like The Art of Unit Testing, Working Effectively with Legacy Code, and others. I've also been using unit tests, mocking frameworks, and the like, periodically at work and definitely see the value. However, I'm still having a hard time wrapping my mind around TDD (as opposed to TAD) when the situation calls for code that is gong to mostly use external API calls. Problem to solve Get the process associated with a windows service using the service name. example: Function GetProcess(ByVal serviceName As String) As Process Rules Show each major iteration in production & test code using TDD No need to see any other code or configuration that is required to get things to run. Just curious about the interfaces, concrete classes, and test methods. C# or VB.NET Must use the .Net framework regarding services/processes (i.e. System.Diagnostics.Process) Test Frameworks: Nunit or MSTest Isolation Frameworks: Moq, Rhino Mock, or Microsoft Moles Must write true unit tests (no integration tests) Additional notes As far as I can tell there are two approaches design wise. Use an Inversion of Control approach along with using the Adapter and/or Facade patterns to wrap the underlying .net framework objects dealing with processes and services. Keep the .net framework code in the class containing the Get Process method and use code detouring (interception) via Microsoft Moles to isolate the hard dependencies from the method under test.

• Creating Client Certificate - Windows

  I am trying to create client certifications against a microsoft CA using the built in website. (Microsoft Active directory Certificate Services) From what I can tell you have to login as the user to create the corresponding certificate. Is there anyway to get around that? I tried to create my own template duplicating the user tempalte but it doesn't match and gets rejected when trying to authenticate. Is this something I'd have to look at building? Any help is appreciative, thank you for your time.

  I am trying to share a folder between Lubuntu 13.04 (in VMware player) and Windows 7 64 bit. I followed a tutorial till step 16. I typed a command and saw nothing. I also went into the /mnt/hgfs folder and saw nothing there. I found the registry entry where this stored, but I apparently need to take some further action to get windows to load the theme. Any ideas? In each case I asked two questions:Can you provide me with a fixed IP Address?Is the equipment to be provided compatible with IPv6?None of the question was satisfactorily answered. One of the persons answering even suggested that granting a fixed IP Address would be a breach of security!I find it very disturbing that two companies that present themselves as innovative should still not be preparing for IPv6. The answer I would have expected was that all new equipment being supplied was IPv6 compatible and that plans were in hand for a switchover to IPv6. Instead new equipment would be supplied that would have to be replaced when IPv6 comes. Equally disturbing was that the call center people who answered did not know why a fixed IP address was important or why the change to IPv6 would have to come.I would rather not name and shame the two companies, however I will be looking elsewhere for my next Internet Service Provider.

  I've been programming for about 20 years now some of my friends have been at it for over 30. I have read many, many manuals and yes it's not my favourite past time. So 10 years ago I made a promise to myself to try and only learn about products which have long life times. I immediately gave up programming GUIs and concentrated on back end development as I decided that these products (Oracle, MQ Series, SQL Server, BizTalk and later WCF, WF) have longer life times and smaller incremental changes than front end products.10 years ago I had no idea how good a decision that would turn out to be. There have been so many different Microsoft products for the front end in that time; multiple versions of Windows Forms, FrontPage, Html, Javascript, ASP.net, Silverlight, SharePoint, WPF and now hopefully a stayer Metro.I remember being at a Microsoft conference in 2006 when Martin Fowler told a crowd of developers (I'm paraphrasing) "If you don't like change then you're in the wrong business!". Well I've been in the business for 20 years and yes I'm a little resistant to change. I like my investment in reading manuals and getting certified to be time well spent!Over the last 2 years I have been writing A LOT of PowerShell script, I think there is a good chance this product will still be around and be used for new development in 10 years, learning it is a good investment.

• How can I discourage the use of Access?

  Lets pretend that a very large company (revenue numbers with more than 8 figures) is looking to do a refresh on a software system, particularly the dashboard used by employees. This system was originally put together in the early 1990's to handle inventory tracking and storage across a variety of facilities (10+). Since this large company is now in the process of implementing some of these inventory processes with SAP they are in need of a major refresh. The existing system: Microsoft Access project performs dashboard duties Unique shipping/receiving configurations at different facilities require unique forms and queries within the Access project Uses 3rd party libraries referenced by Access to directly interface with at control system (read: motors, conveyors, and counters) Individual SQL Server 2000 instances (some traces of pre-update SQL Server 6.0 documents) at each facility The Issue: This system started as a home brewed inventory tracking scheme with a single internal sponsor who is still in charge of the technical direction. The original sponsor prescribing the desired deliverables that are being called for in the current RFP. The RFP describes a system based around a single Access project. Any suggestion that Access is ill suited for a project of this scope are shot down under the reasoning that "it works for the scope now". Are there any case studies, notices, or statements that can be used to disuade this potential customer from repeating their mistake? Does Microsoft make any statements directly about when it is highly recommended to ditch Access?

• SQL SERVER – Backing Up and Recovering the Tail End of a Transaction Log – Notes from the Field #042

  [Notes from Pinal]: The biggest challenge which people face is not taking backup, but the biggest challenge is to restore a backup successfully. I have seen so many different examples where users have failed to restore their database because they made some mistake while they take backup and were not aware of the same. Tail Log backup was such an issue in earlier version of SQL Server but in the latest version of SQL Server, Microsoft team has fixed the confusion with additional information on the backup and restore screen itself. Now they have additional information, there are a few more people confused as they have no clue about this. Previously they did not find this as a issue and now they are finding tail log as a new learning. Linchpin People are database coaches and wellness experts for a data driven world. In this 42nd episode of the Notes from the Fields series database expert Tim Radney (partner at Linchpin People) explains in a very simple words, Backing Up and Recovering the Tail End of a Transaction Log. Many times when restoring a database over an existing database SQL Server will warn you about needing to make a tail end of the log backup. This might be your reminder that you have to choose to overwrite the database or could be your reminder that you are about to write over and lose any transactions since the last transaction log backup. You might be asking yourself “What is the tail end of the transaction log”. The tail end of the transaction log is simply any committed transactions that have occurred since the last transaction log backup. This is a very crucial part of a recovery strategy if you are lucky enough to be able to capture this part of the log. Most organizations have chosen to accept some amount of data loss. You might be shaking your head at this statement however if your organization is taking transaction logs backup every 15 minutes, then your potential risk of data loss is up to 15 minutes. Depending on the extent of the issue causing you to have to perform a restore, you may or may not have access to the transaction log (LDF) to be able to back up those vital transactions. For example, if the storage array or disk that holds your transaction log file becomes corrupt or damaged then you wouldn’t be able to recover the tail end of the log. If you do have access to the physical log file then you can still back up the tail end of the log. In 2013 I presented a session at the PASS Summit called “The Ultimate Tail Log Backup and Restore” and have been invited back this year to present it again. During this session I demonstrate how you can back up the tail end of the log even after the data file becomes corrupt. In my demonstration I set my database offline and then delete the data file (MDF). The database can’t become more corrupt than that. I attempt to bring the database back online to change the state to RECOVERY PENDING and then backup the tail end of the log. I can do this by specifying WITH NO_TRUNCATE. Using NO_TRUNCATE is equivalent to specifying both COPY_ONLY and CONTINUE_AFTER_ERROR. It as its name says, does not try to truncate the log. This is a great demo however how could I achieve backing up the tail end of the log if the failure destroys my entire instance of SQL and all I had was the LDF file? During my demonstration I also demonstrate that I can attach the log file to a database on another instance and then back up the tail end of the log. If I am performing proper backups then my most recent full, differential and log files should be on a server other than the one that crashed. I am able to achieve this task by creating new database with the same name as the failed database. I then set the database offline, delete my data file and overwrite the log with my good log file. I attempt to bring the database back online and then backup the log with NO_TRUNCATE just like in the first example. I encourage each of you to view my blog post and watch the video demonstration on how to perform these tasks. I really hope that none of you ever have to perform this in production, however it is a really good idea to know how to do this just in case. It really isn’t a matter of “IF” you will have to perform a restore of a production system but more of a “WHEN”.   Microsoft released an update for Windows 7 today (Tuesday, April 27, 2010): KB980408: The April 2010 stability and reliability update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is available. The update fixes, among other things: Windows Explorer may stop responding for 30 seconds when a file or a directory is created or renamed after certain applications are installed. i'm not experiencing it on my own Windows 7 machine, but two colleagues at work were experiencing the problem. i would really like to know what applications were causing problems. Microsoft will never call out the misbehaving applications. i want to know what software i should be ridiculing and insulting. And avoid in the future. Did anyone who was experiencing this problem isolate the applications?

• What Windows licenses are required to run additional terminal service sessions

  We need to build out a server running Windows 2008 R2 Standard that can allow up to 10 simultaneous RDP/Terminal Services connections and I'm a little confused about how the CAL licenses work. From one source I was told I needed 10 "server CALs" and an additional 10 "RDP CALs" (total of 20 CALs). From another, I was told I just needed the 10 "RDP CALs", which implicitly came with the server CAL. The Microsoft licensing website (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-rds.aspx) seems to support scenario #1, but it is still not real clear what those server CALs are needed for. Also, can we use the 2 "built-in" RDP clients, meaning we only need to purchase 8 CALs to reach a total of 10?

• SQL Server 2008 - Error starting service - model.mdf not found?!

  my SQL server 2008 was running fine. About an hour ago, it suddenly stopped - the MSSQLSERVER service had stopped I right clicked, clicked start, and it said the service had started, and stopped I looked in the event log and saw these two errors: 17207 : udopen: Operating system error 3(error not found) during the creation/opening of physical device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf. 17204 : FCB::Open failed: Could not open device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf for virtual device number (VDN) 1. The model.mdf db has NEVER been in that location - i specified drive F: to use for data / log during install. I checked the SQL Configuration Manager, to try and set startup params, but SQL Server is not listed as one of the services..... EDIT: I've now moved the db to where it was looking for: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\ directory. Now if I start the service, it still does not work - i get this error message in the log: Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 3, object ID 1, index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes. Interestingly, i checked the error log - around the time users reported problems, there is this: 2010-01-08 17:11:26.44 spid51 Configuration option 'show advanced options' changed from 0 to 1. Run the RECONFIGURE statement to install. 2010-01-08 17:11:26.44 spid51 FILESTREAM: effective level = 0, configured level = 0, file system access share name = 'MSSQLSERVER'. 2010-01-08 17:11:26.44 spid51 Configuration option 'Agent XPs' changed from 1 to 0. • How to make phone calls using a pc, modem, headphone and no actual phone instrument

  Hi, I have a phone landline connection and I DO NOT have a phone instrument. I connect the cable into my laptop, and want to make calls using my laptop. I have an HDA CX20561 modem. I seem to be able to dial number using dialer.exe, though nothing seems to happen. From Microsoft kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958143, it looks like dialer.exe alone is not enough for the call. Can somebody tell me how to make and receive phone call with whatever hardware I have, i.e. what software will I need. Thanks.

• Internet Explorer 9 is coming Monday to a web near you

  Internet Explorer 9 is finally here...well almost.  Microsoft is releasing their new browser on March 14, 2011. IE9 has a number of improvements, including: Faster, Faster, Faster.  Did I mention it is faster?   With the new browsers coming out from Mozilla, Google, and Microsoft, there have been a flood of speed test coverage.  Chrome has long held the javascript speed crown.  But according to Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols over at ZDNET..."for the moment at least IE9 is actually the fastest browser I’ve tested to date."  He came to this revelation after figuring out that the 32-bit version of IE9 has the new Chakra JIT (the 64-bit version doesn't).  It also has a DirectX-based rendering engine so it can do cool tricks once reserved for desktop applications. Windows 7 Desktop Integration.  Read my post for more details.  Unfortantely, they didn't integrate my ideas...at least not yet :) Hot new UI.  Ok, they "borrowed" some ideas from Chrome...but that is the best form of flattery. Standards Compliance.  A real focus on HTML5 and CSS3.  Definite goodness for developers. So, go get yourself some IE9 on Monday and enjoy!

• Are you ready to take a walk in the clouds?

  Cloud computing is here, whether we want it or not.  When I say "a walk in the clouds” I am not talking about a pleasant romantic comedy, but a real alternative to hosting applications on-premise.  For years we have had the power to host our web sites on remote systems.  Sure, challenges existed.  Mostly web sites.  I could, with a few clicks, create a account at a myriad of web host sites, put my site in the hands of a remote hosting company, and boom, I was a site on the internet.  But choices, power, and management was limited. Now, we have a set of services to let us approach and power and control we love, but with scalability of the data center.  My personal web site is hosted on a laptop running hyperV in my basement.  I have to manage the machine, patch it, make sure it is powered up.  This is fine for the “hello, this is my dog skippy site” that I maintain. If the football pool I run has an issue, one of the 10 users I have calls or emails me and I go check it out.  All is well. But this falls well below the needs of even the simplest of enterprises.  A business needs a stronger datacenter, a better pipe to the world.  Do I really want to base my business on a dynamic dns and a dsl line from the local phone company? Cloud computing gives us most of what I value (control, a db of my own, updating my site from Visual Studio). • SQL Server Express 2005 SP3 Update Keeps Coming Back (KB995706)

  Hi Guys, I have installed the above update through Windows Update. The update went through, reported a successful installation, and then straight after that it came back as an available update. I have done it a few times and my update log now contains multiple successful installations of KB995706. I have tried to uncheck it in the list of updates but it keeps coming back as well. The machine is a Server 2008 RC2 Standard. It's got SQL Server 2005 Express as well as SQL Server 2008 Standard. In the Event Log: Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) followed by Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. To install the updates, an administrator should log on to this computer and Windows will prompt with further instructions: - Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706)

As Scott Allen writes in his OdeToCode blog: One scenario I haven't found addressed very well is the scenario where multiple apps exist in the same greater web application and require some shared code on the client. Are there any recommended approaches to take, pitfalls to avoid, or good sample structures of this scenario that you can point to?
