• Would there be a market for this idea (cross platform VM for iPhone OS)

  For a long time I wondered if the following idea worth a nickel or just a waste of time and energy. I am willing to start a project which will provide a kind of a VM for all iPxxx apps - so developed once for iPxxx can run on a Macbook, iMac, Linux, Android and windows (desktop and mobile). You get the idea, right? I want to do to the current iPhone SDK, the same as what Mono did to Microsoft .Net and perhaps a more complete set of implementation. I tend to believe that if overnight all apps on appstore become available on the android market as well that would be a mini revolution. Think about running iPad apps on every tablet that will come out to the market in the future. Wouldn't it be fantastic to all the developers, which from now on, can write once and sell everywhere? The main questions which I ask myself repeatedly is: "Is This Legal?" - I mean, say I have done this, would apple's lawyers will start sending me all kinds of nasty emails? I am willing to hear your opinion about this idea as well as if some of you willing and able to join forces and start this open source project.

• What is the fastest way to insert 100 000 records from one database to another?

  I have a mobile application. My client has a large data set ~100.000 records. It's updated frequently. When we sync we need to copy from one database to another. I have attached the second database to the main, and run an insert into table select * from sync.table. This is extremely slow, it takes about 10 minutes I think. I noticed that the journal file gets increased step by step. How can I speed this up? EDITED 1 I have indexes off, and I have journal off. Using insert into table select * from sync.table it still takes 10 minutes. EDITED 2 If I run a query like select id,invitem,invid,cost from inventory where itemtype = 1 order by invitem limit 50 it takes 15-20 seconds. • Dropdownlist value not being set when there is a default blank option

  I am using ASP.Net MVC. I have a partial view which has a form with dropdownlists. The dropdownlists are set via ViewData. The partial view is used in a Create and Edit page. The create works fine. I get the dropdownlists and the blank option is a "Please select", like so <%= Html.DropDownList("ContactNrType", ViewData["ContactNrType"] as SelectList, "Please Select") %> But this doesn't seem to work for my edit. If I have that extra "Please select" parameter then it does not select the value for the drop down. I am setting the value of the drop down in the controller like so ViewData["ContactNrType"] = new SelectList(new List<string> { "Mobile", "Home", "Work", "Friend" }, candidate.ContactNrType); Any idea as to what I am doing wrong? I want to share the partial view which contains the form between the two pages. So I need the "Please Select" option for the Create. And I need the value set for the Edit (I don't mind that it has an option that still says "Please Select").

• In Safari, using jQuery a Form Input Text Field does not receive focus after alert is displayed. Why

  I have an ASPX web form. I use jQuery to simply my Javascript. I use a Javascript validation script to validate each of the form fields' values. If an error occurs, I popup an alert with an error message. Then I transfer focus to the underlying element. Here are examples I have tried. • What are your best practices for ensuring the correctness of the reports from SQL?

  Part of my work involves creating reports and data from SQL Server to be used as information for decision. The majority of the data is aggregated, like inventory, sales and costs totals from departments, and other dimensions. When I am creating the reports, and more specifically, I am developing the SELECTs to extract the aggregated data from the OLTP database, I worry about mistaking a JOIN or a GROUP BY, for example, returning incorrect results. I try to use some "best practices" to prevent me for "generating" wrong numbers: When creating an aggregated data set, always explode this data set without the aggregation and look for any obvious error. Export the exploded data set to Excel and compare the SUM(), AVG(), etc, from SQL Server and Excel. Involve the people who would use the information and ask for some validation (ask people to help to identify mistakes on the numbers). Never deploy those things in the afternoon - when possible, try to take a look at the T-SQL on the next morning with a refreshed mind. I had many bugs corrected using this simple procedure. Even with those procedures, I always worry about the numbers. What are your best practices for ensuring the correctness of the reports?

  Hi All, I'm a .NET developer (C#) with several years developing Windows Mobile Apps. I would like to get into developing iPhone Apps and MonoTouch looks good based on reviews I've read. So I'm going to go with MonoTouch. My understanding is that I'll need a new Mac, but as it happens I also need a new PC for my .NET windows development. My question is should I (a) Purchase a Mac Book Pro and dual boot with Windows 7 (b) Purchase a Mac Pro and dual boot with Windows 7 (c) Purchase a good Dev PC and a slighlty less well spec'd Mac Book Pro or Mac Pro Bear in mind I'm only doing MonoTouch development with the Mac, most of my development (approx. 80% initially) will be done on the Windows side. My budget is approx. €3,000 / $4,000 and I'd like a good, fast development environment.It's purely for development so on the windows side installing SQL 2008/VS 2010/Office and on the OS X side installing MonoTouch. BTW - my budget excludes licensing for VS/MonoTouch/etc, I have a MonoTouch and MSDN license. Any opinions are greatly appreciated. I'm a newbie to Mac's !

For a responsive website, i need to use the same toggle element for both a toggle system for one window width, and another toggle system for a second window width. • HTML5 Canvas and Game Programming

  I hope this isn't too open ended. I'm wondering if there is a better (more battery-friendly) way of doing this -- I have a small HTML 5 game, drawn in a canvas (let's say 500x500). I have some objects whose positions I update every 50ms or so. My current implementation re-draws the entire canvas every 50ms. I can't imagine that being very good for battery life on mobile platforms. Is there a better way to do this? This must be a common pattern with games. EDIT: as requested, here are some more updates: Right now, the objects are geometric primitives drawn via arcs and lines. I'm not opposed to making these small png/jpg/gif files instead of that'd help out. These are small graphics -- just 15x15 or so. As the game progresses, more and more of the screen changes at a time. However, at the start, the screen changes relatively slowly (the objects randomly moved a few pixels every 50ms).

  I have read little bit about architecture and also patterns in order to follow the best practices. So this is the architecture we have and I wanted to know what you think of it and any proposed changes or improvements to it - Presentation Layer - Contains all the views,controllers and any helper classes that the view requires also it containes the reference to Model Layer and Business Layer. Business Project - Contains all the business logic and validation and security helper classes that are being used by it. It contains a reference to DataAccess Layer and Model Layer. Data Access Layer - Contains the actual queries being made on the entity classes(CRUD) operations on the entity classes. It contains reference to Model Layer. Model Layer - Contains the entity framework model,DTOs,Enums.Does not really have a reference to any of the above layers. What are your thoughts on the above architecture ? The problem is that I am getting confused by reading about like say the repository pattern, domain driven design and other design patterns. The architecture we have although not that strict still is relatively alright I think and does not really muddle things but I maybe wrong. I would appreciate any help or suggestions here. Thanks !

• In Rails, how to respect :scope when using validates_uniqueness_of in an embedded object form?

  I have a Book model, which has_many Chapters (which belong_to a Book). I want to ensure uniqueness of Chapter titles, but only within the scope of a single book. The catch is that the form for creating chapters is embedded in the Book model's form (The Book model accepts_nested_attributes_for :chapters). Within the Chapter model: validates_uniqueness_of( :chapter_title, :scope = :book_id, :case_sensitive = false, :message = "No book can have multiple chapters with the same title.") However, when I submit the Book creation form (which also includes multiple embedded Chapter forms), if the chapter title exists in another chapter for a different book, I fail the validation test. Book.create( :chapters => [ Chapter.new(:title => "Introduction"), Chapter.new(:title => "How to build things") => Book 1 successfully created Book.create( :chapters => [ Chapter.new(:title => "Introduction"), Chapter.new(:title => "Destroy things") => Book 2 fails to validate second_book = Book.create( :chapters => [ Chapter.new(:title => "A temporary Introduction title"), Chapter.new(:title => "Destroy things") => Book 2 succesfully created second_book.chapters[0].title= "Introduction" => success second_book.chapters.save => success second_book.save => success Can anyone shed some light on how to do this? • OCR combined with font recognition?

  I have a bold idea where a user could take an image like the following and in a few seconds of processing, be able to edit a document which looks roughly the same. The software would use WhatTheFont (or something similar) to recognize the fonts used, and OCR and other software to handle the font size, color, line-spacing, and of course the text content itself. In the case of the example image, there would be three separate "textboxes" produced, each starting at the upper left corner of the text, and extending as far to the bottom right as it could before running into another text box. So the user would then see something like this: (The rectangles are just used to show the boundaries of each textbox.) From here, the user would be able to edit the text in each of these boxes to create a new document. Of course there are tons of obvious uses for such an application, especially on a mobile phone with a built in camera. So my questions are the following: I doubt the answer is yes, but does anything do this already? If I'm going to try to build this, what should I write it in? Can I use Python? What would be the best OCR libraries to start with? Is there a service other than WhatTheFont for font recognition that has better API support? Anybody want to help me build it? :) etc. etc. Update: One thing I wanted to mention (but forgot) is I would also like the background to be preserved. In other words, if the example above had an image behind the text, I'd like the document to use that image with text removed. I know this complicates things a lot because that would require some image editing techniques too (something akin to Photoshop CS5' "content-aware fill"). But if we can solve diminished reality on iPhones, I think we can figure this out!

The dbconnect class isn't at fault as it's untampered and has been used in past projects. The error logs don't give any output and no MySQL errors show. Any ideas?

Basically, I am taking a string array and trying to check to see if it contains numbers or an x (ISBN number validation). • Inconsistent canvas drawing in Android browser

  In putting together a small canvas app I've stumbled across a weird behavior that only seems to occur in the default browser in Android. When drawing to a canvas that has the globalCompositeOperation set to 'destination-out' to act as the 'eraser' tool, Android browser sometimes acts as expected, sometimes does not update the pixels in the canvas at all. the setup: context.clearRect(0,0, canvas.width, canvas.height); context.drawImage(img, 0, 0, canvas.width, canvas.height); context.globalCompositeOperation = 'destination-out'; draw a circle to erase pixels from the canvas: context.fillStyle = '#FFFFFF'; context.beginPath(); context.arc(x,y,25,0,TWO_PI,true); context.fill(); context.closePath(); a small demo to illustrate the issue can be seen here: http://gumbojuice.com/files/source-out/ and the javascript is here: http://gumbojuice.com/files/source-out/js/main.js this has been tested in multiple desktop and mobile browsers and behaves as expected.   I am willing to create a server and client program on my android mobile devices. The devices communicate with each other on the same wifi network, therefore, some simple scanning mechanism must be implemented - The client phones search for a server phone through some kind of broadcast. What I did: My protocol - the client phone broadcasts a message port p on the wifi, the server listens on port p. when the server gets the broadcast message it sends a message back, therefore discovering itself to the client. My code - I have opened a broadcast socket on my app, it sends a broadcast message. Meanwhile there is a python script on my PC that listens and replies - I use python so that my testing will be easier - Wireshark on the PC and I can see everything. What happens: When I use one of my Galaxy S phones - it works and I get a response. When I use the other Galaxy S phone - it doesn't work. Now this is what I know: The phone that works actually has Nexus ROM on it Ver. 4.1.1 The phone that doesn't work has 2.3.3 regular galaxy ROM The python code says it receives both of the broadcasts sent from both phones, and replies to both of them without raising any exception. So far I was thought the problem may be 1. the older version'd phone. 2. the windows firewall 3. the router firewall So I have opened Wireshark, and Indeed I saw that both phones are sending their broadcasts - it was logged on Wireshark. But the python script only responded to the first one. So this is why 1 & 3 are irrelevant - if the router firewall was blocking my UDP I would have still seen the python server response, same with the older versioned phone. To get rid of 2 i just disabled the windows firewall - still same problem. Does anyone has a clue to why this effect might happen? Thanks!

  We are in design phase of a project whose goal is replatforming an ASP classic application to ASP.Net 4.0. The system needs to be entirely web based. There are several new requirements for the new system that make this a challenging project: The system needs to be database independent. It must, at version 1.0, support MS SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, Postgres and DB2. The system must be able to allow easy reporting from the database by third party reporting packages. The system must allow an administrative end user to create their own tables in the database through the web based interface. The system must allow an administrative end user to design/configure a user interface (web based) where they can select tables and fields in the system (either our system's core tables or their own custom tables created in #3) The system must allow an administrative end user to create and maintain relationships between these custom created tables, and also between these tables and our system's core tables. The system must allow an administrative end user to create business rules that will enforce validation, show/hide UI elements, block certain actions based on the identity of specific users, specific user groups or privileges. Essentially it's a system that has some core ticket tracking functionality, but allows the end user to extend the interface, business rules and the database. Is this possible to build in a .Net, Web based environment? If so, what do you think the level of effort would be to get this done? We are currently a 6 person shop, with 2.5 full time developers.

  I usually use JSON with jQuery to just return a string with html. However, I want to start to use Javascript objects in my code. What's the simplest way to get started using json objects on my page? When one of those customers are clicked, the customer id gets sent to a webservice which retrieves the customer details that are relevant to a sales person. I know the SO talent pool is quite deep so I figured you all here would be able to guide in the right direction and give me a few ideas on the best way to approach this.

• Refetching a previously visited page

  All, I am having a field day with page refetching. Any help or pointer will be greatly appreciated!! The behavior is a bit specific to mobile browser. Problem: I have two pages and created a shortcut link to pg#1 in the home page. Through a form submit button, user is taken from pg#1 to pg#2. All that is working fine. Now once I am on pg#2. I will leave the browser and click the shortcut later. The browser will stay on pg#2 and won't go to pg#1 even though the path in URLS is different between the two views. It is almost like Django decides that since I have already visited view#1, it doesn't need to fetch it again. This problem or behavior doesn't happen if I move the same code that handle the two views and the templates to a bare bone test project. Setup: I am using django-registration, context session. I am not using any HTML caching tag. I already have DEBUG turned on in my settings.py. Are there other ways that I can tell what the server is doing. • Preserving the order of annotations

  When obtaining the list of fields using getFields() and getDeclaredFields(), the order of the fields in a Java class is undefined. I need this order in my validation library. Since the order is not preserved (though some claim that the order is preserved in JDK 6 and above but is not guaranteed across VMs). I cannot speculate on this because the order of annotations across fields is absolutely essential for the library. One way to get around this is to have an order or an index attribute in my Annotation. What worries me is that the code could become a bit cumbersome for maintaining in the following case. If the use wants to insert a new annotated field then, he might have to renumber all the other annotations in the class. I could have the order or index as a floating point number - float or double but , it wouldn't look good to have order such as 1, 1.5, 2, etc., What would be an elegant solution for this problem?
