• Running OpenStack Icehouse with ZFS Storage Appliance

  Couple of months ago Oracle announced the support for OpenStack Cinder plugin with ZFS Storage Appliance (aka ZFSSA).  With our recent release of the Icehouse tech preview I thought it is a good opportunity to demonstrate the ZFSSA plugin working with Icehouse. One thing that helps a lot to get started with ZFSSA is that it has a VirtualBox simulator. This simulator allows users to try out the appliance’s features before getting to a real box. Users can test the functionality and design an environment even before they have a real appliance which makes the deployment process much more efficient. With OpenStack this is especially nice because having a simulator on the other end allows us to test the complete set of the Cinder plugin and check the entire integration on a single server or even a laptop. Let’s see how this works Installing and Configuring the Simulator To get started we first need to download the simulator, the simulator is available here, unzip it and it is ready to be imported to VirtualBox. If you do not already have VirtualBox installed you can download it from here according to your platform of choice. To import the simulator go to VirtualBox console File -> Import Appliance , navigate to the location of the simulator and import the virtual machine. When opening the virtual machine you will need to make the following changes: - Network – by default the network is “Host Only” , the user needs to change that to “Bridged” so the VM can connect to the network and be accessible. - Memory (optional) – the VM comes with a default of 2560MB which may be fine but if you have more memory that could not hurt, in my case I decided to give it 8192 - vCPU (optional) – the default the VM comes with 1 vCPU, I decided to change it to two, you are welcome to do so too. And here is how the VM looks like: Start the VM, when the boot process completes we will need to change the root password and the simulator is running and ready to go. Now that the simulator is up and running we can access simulated appliance using the URL https://<IP or DNS name>:215/, the IP is showing on the virtual machine console. At this stage we will need to configure the appliance, in my case I did not change any of the default (in other words pressed ‘commit’ several times) and the simulated appliance was configured and ready to go. We will need to enable REST access otherwise Cinder will not be able to call the appliance we do that in Configuration->Services and at the end of the page there is ‘REST’ button, enable it. If you are a more advanced user you can set additional features in the appliance but for the purpose of this demo this is sufficient. One final step will be to create a pool, go to Configuration -> Storage and add a pool as shown below the pool is named “default”: The simulator is now running, configured and ready for action. Configuring Cinder Back to OpenStack, I have a multi node deployment which we created according to the “Getting Started with Oracle VM, Oracle Linux and OpenStack” guide using Icehouse tech preview release. Now we need to install and configure the ZFSSA Cinder plugin using the README file. In short the steps are as follows: 1. Copy the file from here to the control node and place them at: /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/cinder/volume/drivers/zfssa 2. Configure the plugin, editing /etc/cinder/cinder.conf # Driver to use for volume creation (string value) #volume_driver=cinder.volume.drivers.lvm.LVMISCSIDriver volume_driver=cinder.volume.drivers.zfssa.zfssaiscsi.ZFSSAISCSIDriver zfssa_host = <HOST IP> zfssa_auth_user = root zfssa_auth_password = <ROOT PASSWORD> zfssa_pool = default zfssa_target_portal = <HOST IP>:3260 zfssa_project = test zfssa_initiator_group = default zfssa_target_interfaces = e1000g0 3. Restart the cinder-volume service: service openstack-cinder-volume restart 4. Look into the log file, this will tell us if everything works well so far. If you see any errors fix them before continuing. 5. Install iscsi-initiator-utils package, this is important since the plugin uses iscsi commands from this package: yum install -y iscsi-initiator-utils The installation and configuration are very simple, we do not need to have a “project” in the ZFSSA but we do need to define a pool. With Cinder we can create persistent storage and launch instances from a Cinder volume. Booting from volume has several advantages, one of the main advantages of booting from volumes is speed. No matter how large the volume is the launch operation is immediate there is no copying of an image to a run areas, an operation which can take a long time when using ephemeral storage (depending on image size). In this deployment we have a Glance image of Oracle Linux 6.5, I would like to make it into a volume which I can boot from. The result is an efficient template model where users can spawn an instance from a “template” instantly even if the template is very large in size. • Nashorn in the Twitterverse, Continued

  After doing the Twitter example, it seemed reasonable to try graphing the result with JavaFX.  At this time the Nashorn project doesn't have an JavaFX shell, so we have to go through some hoops to create an JavaFX application.  I thought showing you some of those hoops might give you some idea about what you can do mixing Nashorn and Java (we'll add a JavaFX shell to the todo list.) Okay, with the meat out of the way, let's talk about the hoops. The  load method reads a script into memory and then gets engine to eval that script.  Note, that load also returns the result of the eval. Now for the fun part.  There are several different approaches we could use to communicate between the Java main and the script.  In this example we'll use a Java interface.  The JavaFX main needs to do at least start and stop, so the following will suffice as an interface; public interface Trending {     public void start(Stage stage) throws Exception;     public void stop() throws Exception; } At the end of the example's script we add; (function newTrending() {     return new Packages.Trending() {         start: function(stage) {             var data = getTrendingData();             graph(stage, data);             stage.show();         },         stop: function() {         }     } })(); which instantiates a new subclass instance of Trending and overrides the start and stop methods.  The result of this function call is what is returned to main via the eval. trending = (Trending) load("Trending.js"); To recap, the script Trending.js contains functions getTrendingData, graph and newTrending, plus the call at the end to newTrending.  Back in the Java code, we cast the result of the eval (call to newTrending) to Trending, thus, we end up with an object that we can then use to call back into the script.  trending.start(stage); Voila. ?

SUCCESS: Specified value was saved. But some of the paths in the end are not saved in variable, I guess due to character limit as the error suggests.

Here is my setup and what causes the problem: I have 2 computers and one mobile which all sync through a googlemail account. But after also synching the contacts, each Outlook instance creates a birthday event for that contact. So I end up with 2 Birthday reminders. • Where to find new Micro-BTX (uBTX) motherboards? Or should I just replace the box?

  OK, so I'm guessing that it's dead. It's not my machine, and the owner is on a very fixed (IE, none) income. I'm generous, but I'm not that generous, since I already gave him what (at the time) was a fully functional and fairly well-equipped machine. (Aside from the mobo and proc, almost nothing else in it was stock. I'd taken it up to 3GB of RAM, upgraded the hard drive, added a decent video card, installed a wireless adapter, running Vista, etc.) According to further research, the machine uses a Micro-BTX (uBTX) motherboard, and since it's an AMD Athlon64, the AM2 socket. So I'm looking at a few options, and am wondering what's the best route to take? Find an AM2 socket uBTX mobo. I can't find them new online anywhere, leading me to believe that this is an obsolete form factor/chip combination. I don't want a refurb or a system pull because, quite honestly, once I deal with this mess, I don't want to go through it again in another year or two. Find an Intel uBTX mobo and a (relatively -- hah, I still want at least a dual-core) inexpensive Intel CPU. At this point, the only things stock in the machine would be the case and the PSU. :) Buy a bare-bones kit (mobo/proc/PSU/case, sometimes even RAM) from somewhere like CompUSA/TigerDirect or Fry's and move all of the other hardware over. This makes life difficult because the copy of Vista is an upgrade, tied to the copy of XP which shipped on the Gateway, which is OEM and won't install on the new box. :) If I change the CPU brand (AMD to Intel), will I need to reinstall Windows, or can it just be reactivated? Where can I actually find a new, in-box, not system pull, not refurb AM2 uBTX mobo? Do they even exist anymore? What kind of money are we talking (US dollars)? The end goal is to get the machine functional again as cheaply as humanly possible. If it were my own machine, I wouldn't even be asking this, I'd be custom-building a new one. However, it's not mine, I'm shelling out of pocket for the fix (plus the work), and thus want to keep that end price low-low-low.

  Hi All, I'm currently struggling with this "Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute" issue. I have searched about this error message, and it's all related to the foreach statement. I do have the some foreach statements, but they are just simply representing the data. I did not using any remove or add inside the foreach statement. NOTE: The error randomly happens (about 4-5 times a day). The application is the MVC website. There are about 5 users operate this applications (about 150 orders a day). Could it be some another users modified the collection, and then occur this error? • How to debug Ubuntu/Cisco VPN issues

  I'm trying to connect an Ubuntu laptop (9.10) with some kind of Cisco VPN device; I don't know what's on the other end, and I'm not likely to find out exactly what. I know my company allows VPN from Linux clients because they provide one that I cannot get to install (it fails to compile). I've had the most luck with the network-manager-vpnc package, however I can't figure out what's failing.   Is there any way to change the default mouse cursor on OSX Mavericks? More precisely, I'd like to make it look like in windows, and even more precisely I want to move the 'point' where the mouse cursor actually 'clicks' - on windows it's on the very end of the arrow, even outside of it, and on mac it's a little inside the arrow. I've done some research, and all the websites either tell me to get Mighty Mouse, which doesn't work on my system, and other's tell me how to change the size of my cursor.

  i do not understand how but someone is uploading a php file into the public_html directory of my CentOS 6 server like statisticsuQPo.php this php file gives me "linux10+cfcd208495d565ef66e7dff9f98764da" and it is sending spam mail's without end. i have remove the file maybe 10 times but i do got it back every day. how can i solve this problem? is there anything wrong with my apache configuration?

• Delete until previous punctuation mark in Bash

  In Bash, Ctrl + W will erase the last word. Bash considers words to be delimited by spaces. This means that if the cursor is at the end of the string "cd /dir1/dir2/dir3" and you hit Ctrl + W you will be left with "cd ". Is there a Bash shortcut (custom defined is okay) that will leave me with "cd /dir1/dir2/"?

  Hi - Running the install.sh script as-is from Virtualmin (GPL version), I get a dovecot error after about 5.5mins of installation. I have tried this on several versions of the server - same error whether or not I run apt-get update +/- apt-get upgrade .... and whether or not I have the FQDN set. • Getting macro keys from a razer blackwidow to work on linux

  I picked up a razer blackwidow ultimate that has additional keys meant for macros that are set using a tool that's installed on windows. I'm assuming that these arn't some fancypants joojoo keys and should emit scancodes like any other keys. Firstly is there a standard way to check these scancodes in linux? Secondly how do i set these keys to do things in command line and x based linux setups? My current linux install is xubuntu 10.10, but i'll be switching to kubuntu once i have a few things fixed up. Ideally the answer should be generic and system-wide Things i have tried so far: showkeys from the built in kbd package (in a seperate vt) - macro keys not detected xev - macro keys not detected lsusb and evdev output this ahk script's output suggests the M keys are not outputting standard scancodes Things i need to try snoopy pro + reverse engineering (oh dear) Wireshark - preliminary futzing around seems to indicate no scancodes emitted when what i seem to think is the keyboard is monitored and keys pressed. Might indicate additional keys are a seperate device or need to be initialised somehow. Need to cross reference that with lsusb output from linux, in 3 scenarios - standalone, passed through to a windows VM without the drivers installed, and the same with. LSUSB only detects one device on a standalone linux install It might be useful to check if the mice use the same razer synapse driver , since that means some variation of razercfg might work (not detected. only seems to work for mice) Things i have Have worked out: In a windows system with the driver, the keyboard is seen as a keyboard and a pointing device. And said pointing device uses, in addition to your bog standard mouse drivers.. a driver for something called a razer synapse. Mouse driver seen in linux under evdev and lsusb as well Single Device under OS X apparently, though i have yet to try lsusb equivilent on that Keyboard goes into pulsing backlight mode in OS X upon initialisation with the driver. This should probably indicate that there's some initialisation sequence sent to the keyboard on activation. They are, in fact, fancypants joojoo keys. Extending this question a little I have access to a windows system so if i need to use any tools on that to help answer the question, its fine. I can also try it on systems with and without the config utility. The expected end result is still to make those keys usable on linux however. I also realise this is a very specific family of hardware. I would be willing to test anything that makes sense on a linux system if i have detailed instructions - this should open up the question to people who have linux skills, but no access to this keyboard The minimum end result i require I need these keys detected, and usable in any fashion on any of the current graphical mainstream ubuntu varients

• Autossh dies after time

  My setup is Ubuntu 10.04 on AWS Autossh to create a tunnel for MySQL The tunnel is automatically created using Upstart (/etc/init/autossh.conf): respawn console none start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up IFACE=eth0) stop on [!12345] script #user/IP Address redacted exec autossh -M 20000 -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -L 3306:127.0.0.1:3306 [email protected] end script On boot the tunnel is created, works great. After some random idle time it dies. Any thoughts on how to keep it alive? I don't know what's killing autossh.
