• Eclipse won't let me select a Windows share as Workspace

  Environment: Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit), Eclipse Helios 3.6 (64-bit), Android 2.3 SDK + ADT. All works great, but I can only select a workspace that's on the local system. Eclipse won't let me select shared folder on a Samba server. Ubuntu's URI for this share is of the form: smb://[email protected]/sandbox/workspace But even if I typed this manually into the edit box, Eclipse won't accept it. I don't have this problem with Eclipse 3.6 on Windows. Is there a workaround to solve this?

• What is the process of rewriting URLs?

  What I would really like is a step by step resource on how to rewrite URLs. I have seen the documentation on mod_rewrite for example in Apache, but I still find myself a little lost. If I have example.com/products.html, can I change this to appear as example.com/products ? For that to happen, do I make all of my links point to /products and then have a rewrite rule that directs /products to /products.html? Or is it the other way around? Also, for PHP forms, I've noticed that I can't have a form action that points to a directory: for example, it requires /mail/index.php instead of just /mail. Can mod_rewrite fix this too?

• User is trying to leave! Set at-least confirm alert on browser(tab) close event!!

  This is something that might be annoying or irritating for end user. Obviously, It's impossible to prevent end user from closing the/any browser. Just think of this if it becomes possible!!!. That will be a horrible web world where everytime you will be attacked by sites and they will not allow to close your browser until you confirm your shopping cart and do the payment. LOL:) You need to open the task manager and might have to kill the running browser exe processes.Anyways; Jokes apart, but I have one situation where I need to alert/confirm from the user in any anyway when they try to close the browser or change the url. Think of this: You are creating a single page intranet asp.net application where your employee can enter/select their TDS/Investment Declarations and you wish to at-least ALERT/CONFIRM them if they are attempting to:[1] Close the Browser[2] Close the Browser Tab[3] Attempt to go some other site by Changing the urlwithout completing/freezing their declaration.So, Finally requirement is clear. I need to alert/confirm the user what he is going to do on above bulleted events. I am going to use window.onbeforeunload event to set the javascript confirm alert box to appear.    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">        window.onbeforeunload = confirmExit;        function confirmExit() {            return "You are about to exit the system before freezing your declaration! • Implementing custom "Remember Me" with Stripe

  Implementing remember me with Stripe, while not using their Checkout (not supported on PhoneGap), seems to be fine using the path: First time: Request token on the client side using card info. Create customer on server side using token. Upon confirm, charge customer. Second time: Check if current user is Stripe customer by requesting the info from our server. If is Stripe customer, show "use credit card on file" instead of regular CC form. Upon confirm, charge customer. However, there is one important convenience items missing--last four digits of card number. Most sites inform you of the card you're using before making the payment, pretty important in case you have to switch out cards. I have seen that you can retrieve charges which would allow me to get the last four digits. Is it bad practice to pull that and display it? Are there alternative solutions anyone has in mind?

There is a link to a page at http://planetquest.jpl.nasa.gov/widget.cfm for an applet to poll for this information. I downloaded the applet but had no wish to install it. Instead I viewed it in Notepad++ and found that it contacted http://planetquest.jpl.nasa.gov/atlas/xml/planetstats.cfm to get data on the latest discovery. I have amedned the CommonData project and have wrote a class in that to poll for the information. I have amended the CommonData project and have wrote a class in that to poll for the information.  That class and its unit test will form the basis for a new project.

• Why do browsers leak memory?

  A colleague and I were speaking about browsers (using a browser control object in a project), and it appears as plain as day that all browsers (Firefox, Chrome, IE, Opera) display the same characteristic or side-effect from their usage and that being 'Leaking Memory'. Can someone explain why that is the case? Surely as with any form of code, there should be proper garbage collection? PS. I've read about some defensive patterns on why this can happen from a developer's perspective. I am aware of an article Crockford wrote on IE; but why is the problem symptomatic of every browser? • Error when running binary with root setuid under encrypted home directory

  I'm using a VPN script for Juniper's Secure Access protocol form here, which executes a binary located under ~/.juniper_networks/network_connect/ncsvc with the following permissions: -rws--s--x 1 root root 1225424 okt. 25 13:54 ncsvc But when I do, I get the following error: ncsvc> Failed to setuid to root. Error 1: Operation not permitted Moving/copying the ~/.juniper_networks folder to e.g. /opt/juniper (with the same owner permissions), I don't get the error. In the forum thread at Ubuntuforums someone pointed out that it's probably because I have encrypted my /home and thus a "problem" with ecryptfs. How can I fix this?

  I need some help finding the appropriate tutorials for what I need. I have tried looking hard with no avail. I have Adobe Flash CS6, and I want to make a website using that software. I want the content to be uploaded onto a server so that the flash program can just fetch the information from the server and dynamically update the website itself, instead of editing the content on the flash website and reuploading the whole flash file (as I have done before). I also want the ability to have a guestbook and a contact form. Also, if possible, I wanted an ability to add tabs to the navigation bar dynamically instead of having to edit the flash file. Can anyone point be to a good tutorial which can help me with this? I have tried looking, and most of the results I get are completely useless to me.

• Does professionalism in job postings matter?

  I came across this job posting: http://www.justin.tv/jobs/jobs. The page contains some bad language ("No bulls--t"). I personally find this vaguely offensive, and it would certainly put me off applying to work there: It made me wonder what kind/personality of people work at this company. At least where I'm from (EU), the language would be considered bad form, and it would be seen as badly representing the company. Some job postings seem to go to the other extreme, filled with vacuous people skill descriptions and irrelevant details. It's tempting to dream up pictures of each company based on their job posting. So, does professionalism in job postings matter? Are you inclined to see through bad language, irrelevant corporate speak and so on, or do these affect interest in a job?

• Predicting advantages of database denormalization

  I was always taught to strive for the highest Normal Form of database normalization, and we were taught Bernstein's Synthesis algorithm to achieve 3NF. This is all very well and it feels nice to normalize your database, knowing that fields can be modified while retaining consistency. However, performance may suffer. That's why I am wondering whether there is any way to predict the speedup/slowdown when denormalizing. That way, you can build your list of FD's featuring 3NF and then denormalize as little as possible. I imagine that denormalizing too much would waste space and time, because e.g. giant blobs are duplicated or it because harder to maintain consistency because you have to update multiple fields using a transaction. Summary: Given a 3NF FD set, and a set of queries, how do I predict the speedup/slowdown of denormalization? Link to papers appreciated too.

• Complexity of a web application

  I am currently writing my Master's Thesis on maintainability of a web application. I found some methods like the "Maintainability Index" by Coleman et.al. or the "Software Maintainability Index" by Muthanna et.al. For both of them one needs to calculate the cyclomatic complexity. So my question is: Is it possible to measure the cyclomatic complexity of a web application? In my opinion there are three parts to a web application: Server code (PHP, C#, Python, Perl, etc.) Client code (JavaScript) HTML (links and forms as operators, GET-parameters and form fields as operands!?) What do you think? Is there another point of view on the complexity of web application? Did I miss something?

  In Part 1 of this article series you developed a wizard in an ASP.NET MVC application. Although the wizard developed in Part 1 works as expected it has one shortcoming. It causes full page postback whenever you click on Previous or Next button. This behavior may not pose much problem if a wizard has only a few steps. However, if a wizard has many steps and each step accepts many entries then full page postback can deteriorate the user experience. To overcome this shortcoming you can add Ajax to the wizard so that only the form is posted to the server.
