• Grab sound of a SDL game with ffmpeg/avconv

  I'm trying to make a screencast of a SDL game which I developed some years ago, with the following command: sleep 5 && avconv -f x11grab -s 1366x768 -r 25 -i :0.0 -same_quant screen_cast.mkv (in this 5 seconds of sleep, I open the game). But the generated video (screen_cast.mkv) doesn't capture audio. I use for my game the SDL_Mixer library, with default configuration (22050 for frequency, AUDIO_S16SYS for format, and 2 channels). What's the problem? (with options -f alsa -i pulse it doesn't work either).

• Android : glowing/pulsing line/triangle

  I would like to create a simple Android app using Opengl ES 2.0 that is showing a simple shape (like line or triangle) that is glowing and pulsing like Nexus X logo in this video : http://youtu.be/jBKVAfZUFqI?t=59s What should I look for? So far I googled around for glowing effects and found techniques like "bloom" or "additive blending". Are they relevant here? how I would implement pulsing glow with them? • Achieving more fluent movement

  I'm working on my first OpenGL 2D game and I've just locked the framerate of my game. However, the way objects move is far from satisfying: they tend to lag, which is shown in this video. I've thought how more fluent animation can be achieved and started getting segmentation faults due to accessing the same object by two different threads. I've tried the following threads' setting: Drawing, creating new objects Moving player, moving objects, deleting objects Currently my application uses this setting: Drawing, creating new objects, moving objects, deleting object Moving player Any ideas would be appreciated. EDIT: I've tried increasing the FPS limit but lags are noticeable even at 200 fps.

• There's no Sound Mixer menu, missing menu option in Sound Recorder

  I am using: -Ubuntu 11.10 -Skype -PS3 Eye Toy camera to input video and sound This setup has been properly working in former Ubuntu releases. To use the mic already built in on the PS3 Eye Toy camera I open de Sound Recorder app (notice: not inside Skype, from inside Skype it is not possible to do this) that is included in Gnome and then I go to FileSound Mixer, from this menu I can choose Gnome to get the input audio from the PS3 Eye Toy, instead of from the Audio-In of the computer. Now in Ubuntu 11.10 this Sound Mixer menu inside Sound Recorder is missing, Gnome says something like this: gnome-volume-control is not installed in the proper directory Note: I have tried this on Unity, Unity 2D, Gnome Classic, Gnome Classic 2D and Gnome Shell. In all of them the problem is the same. What can I do? Basically what I want to do is to be able to tell the computer to get the audio in from the PS3 Camera. Thanks in advance.

  Im thinking about buying a V5-171 with an i3 in it. Im worried about secure boot though. I heard some people cant turn it off and it wont work... Im not shy to open it up and replace the hard drive with Ubuntu preinstalled. Im also worried about the wifi working. I have heard its been dropping out for people quite a bit along with also the trackpad not working. I dont mind replacing the wifi stick (if its even possible?) inside. Is the GPU (HD4000 i think) supported in ubuntu with full video accel? Thanks!

• Lenovo G580 Brightness Error caused by unsupported updates. How to revert?

  I just installed the 64-Bit version of Ubuntu 12.04 on my newly bought Lenovo G580. The brightness control was working properly using the Live CD and when I first started the installed version. Then I updated Ubuntu and restarted my laptop, and suddenly now, I can't change the brightness. I think its caused by some update. And then I went and checked my update settings, and saw that Unsupported Updates were enabled by default. So now I need to fix this brightness issue somehow. What should I do to locate the wrong update and remove it? I don't even mind removing all the updates right now. Thanks for the help. :)

• Reading 'Index Status' graph in Google Webmaster tools

  I recently found a bunch of old files that had been ftp'ed to a live production server by mistake on a static (html / css / js) site. I manually deleted these files, but today when checking in Google Webmaster tools i found this graph below. The 'update' marker is from 3/9/14, what i can work out is what Google is trying to tell me, are they saying that : There was a ranking update like Penguin or Panda and they penalized my site and un-indexed a load of pages which they thought were junk.. OR Is this showing that I updated the site by deleting the files on the server on 3/9/14 OR Is this something else ?

  Is there any evidence that linking to external quality, reputable and popular websites helps with ranking (directly or indirectly)? Is there an established correlation? Some posts on the web do claim it, but without providing any evidence. It is known that if your website links to bad neighborhood, this will harm your reputation and authority, but does the reverse actually help? And, does it matter if the website is young or old in this case? Update I have found this Moz video revealing there is a 0.04 correlation with ranking.

• No boot record when installing 13.04 from USB on WinXP

  I'm replacing WinXP with 13.04 on an older PC using wubi.exe on a USB stick. I had no problem changing the BIOS on another system that was a bit newer but when I change the settings on the older PC to boot from USB, I get a DOS message saying "Searching for boot record...Not found" & asked to try again. I don't have the ability to boot from a live CD so is there a reason why I can boot from a USB on a newer computer but can't from an older one? Both have options to choose to boot from USB, but the older one can find no boot record. The system was built on 12/13/01 by American Megatrends. • Ubuntu slow on HP 2000 notebook with Apu e1-1200

  I am using HP 2000 notebook which initially came with Windows 7 64bit. It has 4gb ram, AMD APU E1-1200 (1.4ghz) with Radeon 7310. With Windows it worked ok, so I decided to switch to Ubuntu. I installed 13.04 64bit at first, but responsiveness wasn't that good (opening windows, menus, Firefox, dash search) even if it was way better during the testing from live USB. I tried different kind of drivers for graphic card, 13.6beta, 13.4, fgrlx proprietary, upgraded kernel but the situation was the same. Then I tried installing 32bit version but the results were identical. After that I tried LTS version 12.04 and Xubuntu 13.04.. Responsiveness wasn't that different at all. Not sure what to do, and I wouldn't want to go back to Windows. This machine is not a beast, but it should be enough to deal with Unity or Xfce without troubles. Oh yes, I have insydeH20 BIOS with not so many options at my disposal. Thanks and best regards,

  I've tried reading through guides for preseeding and customization, but I did not understand how and where to modify which options. I can only comfortably learn through practical examples, for which I ask this question. I am looking into preseeding and customizing solution to just do a few specific tasks: Completely rewrite the packages installed by default, much like minimal installs and with the --no-install-recommends flag of apt-get. Add a few proprietary applications to the default install list Automatically install and mount proprietary drivers on install and live session Edit the default configuration files for applications installed by default Specify partitions along with permission Modify the package pool in the installer media (CD/DVD/USB), preferably using command line tools similar to apt-get and aptitude. Can anyone please tell me how to configure preseed option to only do the above? NB I do not understand the GPG part after adding/removing packages in the pool. PS The third point is of particular importance.

• SH404SEF URLs in Joomla 1.5

  I have two modules to play with urls, the global configuration module and the sh404sef module. The global config is set to "Sef urls: YES" and "mod rewrite enabled: YES" and the sh404sef is set "url optimization: NO". My problem is, even with "Sef urls" set in the global config, my urls still don't seem to be that "user friendly" so I turn on the "Url optimization" using the sh404sef module, and I get better descriptive urls. However, the problem I inherit from doing this is that my dynamically populated chronoforms get messed up (only the chrono forms, other forms are fine); These forms are now showing up at the homepage instead of their own reserved page. Here's an example: Old form "GOOD" url: http://www.mycraftwork.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=94 New optimized "BAD" URL: http://www.mycraftwork.com/handthrown-pottery/alladin-teapot/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=94 Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I can even turn the sh404sef on and off if some people are interested in seeing the issue LIVE. Thanks!! Tao Bellamine

• Why do game engines convert models to triangles compared to keeping it as four side polygon

  I've worked using maya for animation and more film orientated projects however I am also focusing on my studies on video game development (eventually want to be either programmer or some sort of TD with programming and 3D skills). Anyways, I was talking with one of my professor and we couldn't figure out why all game engines (that I know of) convert to triangles. Anyone happen to know why game engines convert to triangles compared to leaving the models as four sided polygons? Also what are the pros and cons (if any) of doing this? Thanks in advance.

• Why must I restart for HDMI audio?

  I have a System76 Lemur Ultra laptop, which has an HDMI port. When I plug in the HDMI cable, it is recognized immediately for video, but not for audio, i.e., it does not show up in the Output tab of the Sound Settings dialog. However, if I do a full restart with the cable plugged in, then it does show up and can be selected. I've also discovered that manually killing and restarting pulseaudio with the HDMI plugged in will force it to be recognized as an available audio output. So my question is, what is broken here? I've thought about writing a bug in launchpad, but I don't know which component is malfunctioning. Is it the kernel? ALSA? Pulse Audio? Something else? By the way, the same bug seems to exist in reverse, namely if I disconnect the HDMI, it is still listed in the Output tab until I again restart the OS. This is 12.04 LTS.

• What developer conferences are you going to this year?

  This short list is what I consider to be the “cream-of-the-crop” in developer conferences. This is also a list of the conferences that I plan on attending in 2011. If you feel your conference is just as good, then shoot me an email at [michael[at]michaelcrump[dot]net, and if possible I will check it out.   In-Person Event Las Vegas on April 18th-22nd, 2011 Redmond on October 17th-21st, 2011 Orlando on December 5th-9th, 2011 Visual Studio Live – I attended this event in November of last year and blogged about my experience. I am also planning on going back to the Orlando session in December of this year. So what did I like the most about this event? Being able to interact one-on-one with a majority of the speakers. If you read my blog post then you will see a list of the speakers that I met up with. I also made a lot of great connections with other professional developers all over the world. They are having an event in Las Vegas on April 18th-22nd. I noticed at this event that they have added a new track on mobile. Being a big fan of mobile, I feel that this is a great move. Codestock.org – If you live in the South then you have heard of CodeStock. To my knowledge, they have only had 3 events so far and they were a huge success. It was such a success that after the last event, everyone was telling me how good it was and how much they enjoyed it. They currently have a call for speakers going on right now, so if you have sessions then be sure to submit yours. So, what makes them stand out? Well for starters Michael Neal (organizer) developed an open API so conference attendees could build their own apps for the sessions. They also encouraged their speakers to go to other sessions instead of stay in a “speaker-room”. Another cool feature is that they are uploading videos from the conference so everyone can benefit. They are currently looking for sponsorship, so help out if you can.   In-Person Event Redmond, WA on October 28/29 2011 *NOT 100% SURE AT THIS POINT* PDC 11 – OK, so the logo should be pdc11 but its not out yet. One of the big perks from this event is that you typically come away with free stuff. In 2010 they gave away Windows 7 Phones. I remember years earlier they gave away laptops. • How many developers actually have private offices?

  So I know everyone here is all about private offices, how many developers actually have them. I am sort of half skeptical. I can believe that lead developers have them, but thats normally just one person in your average office. If it would not be to much to ask: Do you work in a totally awesome office or a nasty old cube? (or somewhere in between) What's your relative rank in the office? (junior, programmer II, senior, lead, etc.) are you doing internal software, or are you in a software-centric environment? (the general thought seems to be that internal developers get cubes while others live in "Joel-Spolsky-Programmer-Candyland")
