  • Ad-hoc reporting similar to Microstrategy/Pentaho - is OLAP really the only choice (is OLAP even sufficient)?

    So I'm getting ready to develop an API in Java that will provide all dimensions, metrics, hierarchies, etc to a user such that they can pick and choose what they want (say, e.g., dimensions of Location (a store) and Weekly, and the metric Product Sales $), provide their choices to the api, and have it spit out an object that contains the answer to their question (the object would probably be a set of cells). I don't even believe there will be much drill up/down. The data warehouse the APIwill interface with is in a standard form (FACT tables, dimensions, star schema format). My question is, is an OLAP framework such as Mondrian the only way to achieve something akin to ad-hoc reporting? I can envisage a really large Cube (or VirtualCube) that contains most of the dimensions and metrics the user could ever want, which would give the illusion of ad-hoc reporting. The problem is that there is a ton of setup to do (so much XML) to get the framework to work with the data. Further it requires specific knowledge, such as MDX, and even moreso learning the framework peculiars (Mondrian API). Finally, I am not positive it will scale much better than simply making queries against a SQL database. OLAP to me feels like very old technology. Is performance really an issue anymore? The alternative I can think of would be dynamic SQL. If the existing tables in the data warehouse conform to a naming scheme (FACT_, DIM_, etc), or if a very simple config file/ database table containing config information existed that stored which tables are fact tables, which are dimensions, and what metrics are available, then couldn't the api read from that and assembly the appropriate sql query? Would this necessarily be harder than learning MDX, Mondrian (or another OLAP framework), and creating all the cubes? In general, I feel that OLAP is at the same time too powerful (supports drill up/down, complex functions) and outdated and am reluctant to base my architecture on it. However, I am unsure if the alternative(s), such as rolling my own ad-hoc reporting framework using dynamic SQL would remove any complexity while still fulfilling requirements, both functional and non-functional (e.g., scalability; some FACT tables have many millions of rows). I also wonder about other techniques (e.g., hive). Has anyone here tried to do ad-hoc reporting? Any advice? I expect this project to take a pretty long time (3 months min, but probably longer), so I just do not want to commit to an architecture without being absolutely sure of its pros and cons.     Say you are using C/SDL for a 2D game project. It's often the case that people use a structure to represent a frame in an animation. The struct consists of an image and how much time the frame is supposed to be visible. Is this data sufficient to represent somewhat complex animation? Is it a good idea to separate animation management code and animation data? Can somebody provide a link to animations tutorials that store animations in a file and retrieve them when needed. I read this in a book (AI game programming wisdom) but would like to see a real implementation.

  • New and Improved Patch for FRM-40654 Errors in Purchase Orders and Requisitions

    Development has modified the code in purchase orders and requisition forms to prevent error FRM-40654 when there are trailing spaces in the tables for most of the fields.  After applying the patch, the form will still display the error but a requery will allow you to save the transaction. For the scenarios not covered in the fix, the FND log will now display the specific field that causes the error.  This an example of the FND log for one document where the note_to_vendor has trailing spaces: Form note_to_vendor oldvalue Database  note_to_vendor newvalue Failed first if statement when comparing fields FRM-40654: Record has been updated. Requery block to see change. This new patch includes the fix in Patch 14204845:"In Oracle Purchasing, leading or trailing spaces in po lines data was resulting in errors".  For more information on FRM-40654 errors see the patching section of Note 1203796.1. Be proactive and apply Patch 14479586:R12.PO.B for 12.1.3 or Patch 14569747 for 11.5.10 now!

  • How to restore my D Drive

    I need help in recovering one of my drives from my windows7 machine. I used to have two drives, c and d. I used D to save all my data. i have been using my laptop from 3years. and when I saw it today, i cant find D drive on my computer :( . When I opened the parititioning wizard it showed me that the space I allocated for D is there but as unallocated space. I badly need the data from D. Can you please suggest if I can use ubuntu to recover D? Thanks in advance.

  • Organizing your Data Access Layer

    I am using Entity Framework as my ORM in an ASP.Net application. I have my database already created so ended up generating the entity model from it. What is a good way to organize files/classes in the data access layer. My entity framework model is in a class library and I was planning on adding additional classes per Entity(i.e per database table) and putting all the queries related to those tables in their respective classes. I am not sure if this is a right approach and if it is then where do the queries requiring data from multiple tables go? Am I completely wrong in organizing my files based on entities/tables and should I organize them based on functional areas instead.

  • PHP - Data Access Layer

    I am currently reviewing a code base and noticed that a majority of the calls (along with DB connections) are just buried inside the PHP scripts. I would have assumed that like other languages they would have developed some sort of data access layer (Like I would do in .Net or Java) for all of the communication to the DB (or implemented MVC, etc). Is this still a common pattern in PHP or is there alternative methodologies/patterns for this technology? I am just trying to understand why the subs would have developed it this way. Any insight/info on how experienced developers design an approach data access in PHP would be very much appreciated.

  • E-Mail Center: How to Debug Auto-Processing Issues

    Do you use E-mail Center Auto-Processing functionality?  Auto-processing rules can be defined which will process an email and initiate actions such as sending an auto-reply, auto-acknowledgement or service request update or creation.  If you're using auto-processing in your environment, then you will have noticed that, when things go wrong, often the only indication that there is an issue is if the email goes to the Supervisor Queue for manual processing instead of being sent.  Oracle Development has developed a script to help you debug when an email is meant to be auto-processed but is failing. There are scripts for R12.0.6 through to R12.1.3. See Doc ID 1427925.1 for details of the script and how to use it.

  • Converting obj data to CSS3D

    I found a ton of formulae and what not, but 3D isn't my forte so I'm at a loss of what specifically to use. My goal is to convert the data in an 3D .obj file (vertices, normals, faces) to CSS3D (width, height, rotateX,Y,Z and/or similar transforms).   • How do I recover my accidentally lost Windows partitions after installing Ubuntu?

    I have a Toshiba satellite A-200 laptop with a Vista OS on it with 4 NTFS partitions (C:) Vista (D:) Entertainment (E:) Work (F:) Sources and I wanted to start using Ubuntu instead. So I tried it first from the live CD and everything was OK and all the partitions were shown and working and so I decided to install Ubuntu to replace Vista on the (C:) drive. After I did that I can no longer find my folders and files on the (D:), (E:), (F:) partitions and the only file system that is shown is one 198 GB although my HDD is 320 GB. I can't access the lost data on the remaining 120 GB which I hope is still there and not totally lost I am now working from the live CD but I am unable to install testdisk. Can I recover the Vista partitions by the product recovery CD to get my laptop back to the factory settings? Can I recover the NTFS partitions using a recovery program for Windows or will that make the problem worse? I need these data badly as I don't have a backup for them.
