• Ubuntu 12.04, xbmc, opengl, intel motherboard

  I've got an HTPC that I built myself, with a Asus P5G41T-M Motherboard. It's got an on-board HDMI port, and I've been using that with no problems. I started out with Mythbuntu ( an older version ), and recently updated to 12.04.1 LTS without any issues. I've been thinking about trying out XBMC for a while, and I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, I seem to be running into quite a few issues. I got XBMC installed from the repos without any issues, but when I try to run it from a console, a box pops up with the following: XBMC needs hardware accelerated OpenGL rendering. Install an appropriate graphics driver. I've done "apt-get --reinstall xserver-xorg" ( as well as a few other video driver packages ) a few times, and no change. Any help in getting this issue sorted out would be awesome.

• LLVM-3.1 libLLVMSupport.a undefined reference to `dladdr'

  I'm trying to compile using the llvm-3.1 package. I'm running 12.04 x64 (3.2.0-26 kernel) && 12.10 (3.5.0-4) x64 backported llvm-3.1 from quantal, then debian experimental. "Workaround is to compile LLVM with cmake specifying the following variable: -DCMAKE_EXE_LINKER_FLAGS=-ldl" http://svn.dsource.org/projects/bindings/trunk/llvm-3.0/Readme I double checked y ldflags and everything seems ok. user@system:/llvm-config --ldflags -L/usr/lib/llvm-3.1/lib -lpthread -lffi -ldl -lm I'm unclear of what to do next; any suggestions?

• JSR Updates and Inactive JSRs

   The following JSRs have made progress in the JCP program this week: JSR 342, Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 7 (Java EE 7) Specification, has posted an Early Draft 2 Review.  This review closes 30 November. JSR 338, Java Persistence 2.1, has posted an Early Draft 2 Review.  This review closes 30 November.  JSR 346, Contexts and Dependency Injection for Java, EE 1.1, has posted a Public Review.  This review closes 3 December.  JSR 352, Batch Applications for the Java Platform, has posted a Public Review.  This review closes 3 December. Inactive JSRs: In 2008, we initiated an effort to identify JSRs that had not continued to make progress in the JCP program.  We have reported on this topic since that time at JCP Executive Committee Meetings. The term 'Inactive JSRs' was introduced, and a process was developed with the guidance of the EC to reduce the number of Inactive JSRs  (reduced from over 60 to 2 JSRs) through either moving to the next JSR stage or being Withdrawn or declared Dormant.  This process has been formalized in JCP 2.8 and above, with the introduction of JSR deadlines.  The JSRs which were put to a Dormancy Ballot in September 2012  have been approved by the EC and are now declared Dormant.  You can view the results of the JSR Voting on JCP.org.  The latest Inactive JSRs report is available as part of the September 2012 JCP EC Face-to-Face Meeting Materials.

• SDL & Windows 8 Metro WinRT

  I am just beginning to dip my tow into game programming and have been reading up on SDL, SFML, OpenGL, XNA, MonoGame and of course DirectX. (Needless to say there are a lot of choices out there) As much as I like SFMLs syntax I have chosen to read up and start with SDL as it is pretty ubiquitous and available on every platform (Windows, Linux, Mac) and also available on portable devices (Android, iOS) with the current exception of WinPhone 7 After that pre-amble here is my question. I notice that the docs say that for the windows platform the SDL API calls through to DirectX for higher perf. ( http://www.libsdl.org/intro.en/whatplatforms.html ) Microsoft have said that for Metro Game Apps you can only use DirectX (which means no XNA, no OpenGL, no SFML, etc, etc) My question is: If SDL just wraps DirectX calls will I (we) be able to use SDL to bring games to the new Metro WinRT environment and Windows 8 marketplace? This would be great if possible. Additionally as WinPhone 8 is supposedly built on Win8 then this could mean SDL would be available on the win phone in the future too. EDIT: Based on DeadMG's answer I have installed Visual Studio 11 (beta) in Windows 8 Consumer Preview (CP) and went file-New to check project types. The project types: "Blank Application", "Direct2D Application" and "Direct3D Application" look of interest. I have selected "Direct2D App" but SDL generates its own window when you call: SDL_INIT Is it possible to link/setup the SDL window to point to the Direct2D surface in the this project?

• Cannot FTP without simultaneous SSH connection?

  I'm trying to set up an old box as a backup server (running 10.04.4 LTS). I intend to use 3rd party software on my PC to periodically connect to my server via FTP(S) and to mirror certain files. For some reason, all FTP connection attempts fail UNLESS I'm simultaneously connected via SSH. For example, if I use putty to test the connection to port 21, the system hangs and times out. I get: 220 Connected to LeServer USER lucas 331 Please specify the password. PASS [password] <cursor> However, when I'm simultaneously logged in (in another session) everything works: 220 Connected to LeServer USER lucas 331 Please specify the password. PASS [password] 230 Login successful. Basically, this means that my software will never be able to connect on its own, as intended. I know that the correct port is open because it works (sometimes) and nmap gives me: Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2012-03-20 16:15 CDT Interesting ports on xx.xxx.xx.x: Not shown: 995 closed ports PORT STATE SERVICE 21/tcp open ftp 22/tcp open ssh 53/tcp open domain 139/tcp open netbios-ssn 445/tcp open microsoft-ds Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.15 seconds My only hypothesis is that this has something to do with iptables. • Performance Overhead of Encrypted /home

  I have a netbook with Windows on the second partition and Xubuntu (/ and /home) on the third partition. I selected to encrypt my home folder during installation. The performance of the netbook is adequate for the small machine that it is, but I'm looking to improve performance. I could not find much information about the overhead (CPU or drive) associated with home partition encryption. I ran the following, writing to my home partition as well as the the mounted Windows partition: dd if=/dev/zero of=~/dummy bs=512 count=10240 dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/Windows/dummy bs=512 count=10240 The first returned 2.4MB/s and the second returned 2.5MB/s. Can I therefore deduce that there is very little overhead to home folder encryption? I'm not sure if the different filesystems will make any difference (/ and /home are ext3). Update 1 I don't know why I didn't use /tmp instead of the mounted Windows folder. Only /home is encrypted, so /tmp is unencrypted ext3. The results of the dd as above are astounding: ~: 2.4 MB/s /tmp: 42.6 MB/s Comments please? The reason I am asking this is that disk access on the netbook is noticeably slow. • Can Foswiki be used as a distributed Redmine replacement? [closed]

  I am quite familiar with and love using git, among other reasons due to its distributed nature. Now I'd like to set up some similarly distributed (FOSS) Project Management software with features similar to what Redmine offers, such as Issue & time tracking, milestones Gantt charts, calendar git integration, maybe some automatic linking of commits and issues Wiki (preferably with Mathjax support) Forum, news, notifications Multiple Projects However, I am looking for a solution that does not require a permanently accesible server, i.e. like in git, each user should have their own copy which can be easily synchronized with others. However it should be possible to not have a copy of every Project on every machine. Since trac uses multiple instances for multiple projects anyway, I was considering using that, but I neither know how well it adapts to simply giting the database itself (which would be be easiest way to handle the distribution due to git being used anyway), nor does it include all of Redmine's feature. After checking http://www.wikimatrix.org for Wikis with integrated tracking system and RCS support, and filtering out seemingly stale project, the choices basically boil down to Foswiki, TWiki and Ikiwiki. The latter doesn't seem to offer as many usability features, and in the TWiki vs Foswiki issue I tend to the latter. Finally, there is Fossil, which starts from the other end by attempting to replace git entirely and tracking itself. I am however not too comfortable with the thought of replacing git, and Fossil's non-SCM features don't seem to be as developed. Now before I invest too much time when someone else might already have tried this, I basically have two questions: Are there crucial features of Project Management software like Redmine that Foswiki does not provide even with all the extensions available? How to set Foswiki up to use git instead of the perl RcsLite?

  I have tried everything to install MariaDB on this clean Ubuntu installation but I keep getting this error, Some packages could not be installed. • How to install compat-drivers or compat-wireless

  Could someone please explain me in detail how to install some of this drivers. I am running Ubuntu 12.04.2 and have the infamous (as I see everywhere in the net) problem with Atheros AR9462 wifi card. I tried everything to fix it and compat drivers are the only solution that I haven't tried. I tried to install some random package from kernel.org site and it couldn't make the driver (it threw some error). Then I updated the kernel to 3.10-rc7 and downloaded the last release of compat drivers and again the same problem occured. I reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04.2 and now I am using the 3.5 kernel because I don't know if rc7 is stable version. So my question is which compat wireless or compat drivers to download for this kernel and what is the process of installing. I tried with some command from the repository and it returned that it's not found. PS I am new to Ubuntu and Linux in general so explaining at length the install process and which driver I should install would be appreciated.

• displaying multi-section html documents - best practices

  I work at a research organization and we publish a lot of large-ish documents, usually organized in sections. What I want to know is how best to present these multi-section documents on our website. Presently, what I do is load the entire document as a single page, with each section as its own div. Then I show and hide divs as needed via a table of contents and "next" and "prev" buttons. The advantages to this are mainly: 1) that you can move between sections very quickly, 2) it produces consistent analytics (when a page is loaded, I know a report is being read). The disadvantages, however, are real: Readers can't take advantage of browser back/forward buttons to move between sections. It's complicated to create direct links to individual sections (I can do it with javascript but it's not easy for other people to grab and share). For long reports, you have to wait for the full report to load before you can move around (and that can include hordes of images and charts). • Canon Pixma 432 network scanner

  I have a problem with a Canon Pixma MX432 Printer/Scanner. I just removed Windows 7 and installed Ubuntu 14.04 8/17/2014 on an older desktop that I built (The computer is an AMD build with an ASUS motherboard). The printer/scanner is an all-in-one unit that is networked in my house via WiFi. All of the computers in my house can access this printer/scanner. My Macbook, my wife's Windows 8 laptop, and my kids mini iPads. I am giving Linux a test-drive with some success as far as setting devices up. But, for the life of me I cannot figure out my scanner issue. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Make/Model: Canon Pixma MX432 PPD Driver: I have no idea how to get this info. Supported?: no, from the information I gather from old forum posts. Works?: the printer works via WiFi perfectly, but not the scanner. The Simple Scan program sees the scanner, but produces an error when I attempt to scan. I also tried XSANE, but that program does not even detect the scanner. NOTE: THE PRINTER IS WORKING OFF OF AN UBUNTU DRIVER AND NOT A CANON DRIVER. • Detect two specific objects collision with bullet physics

  I have got some problem with defining collision between objects in my game using bullet physics. I know that objects are colliding with each other simultaneously and I don't have to do anything more. However I need to be noticed when one object collides with one of the rest. It is quite awkward written so I will tell what I want to achive. I have got ball which hits wall from tubes. Everything is on the floor. When ball hits wall some fragments fall down to infinity. So I have got bellow floor btStaticPlaneShape. This is place where most of objects is stoping and then I can start another action. But not all of them. So I've been trying to use function checkCollideWith but it isn't good method as it was said in reference and wiki. So I've checked method described in wiki http://bulletphysics.org/mediawiki-1.5.8/index.php/Collision_Callbacks_and_Triggers called contact information. This isn't good method either because it is extremly hard to identify what is what when colliding. You have to also remember that ball is almost all the time colliding with something - floor, wall or eart level. So is there any other method to check what is colliding with what?

• Designing a Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). • Gray "apply" button in NetworkManager openvpn connection window

  I installed all the necessary packages for the networkmanager-openvpn function to function. The openvpn-connection-setting are successfully imported into the networkmanger via the conf file but the apply button is grayed out, so that actually saving and using the connection isn't possible? Does anyone know, where the problem is? It's a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 after the upgrade from 10.04 sent the networkmanger down the drain. "No" will cause the action detailed to be unavailable. Ideally "yes" or "auth_admin_keep" should be there. They will either allow all access, or prompt for a admin password. The above does not seem to work for me - It still has a gray apply button. If I choose a file for User certificate as well as CA Certificate "which is all openvpn supplies and needs" and a key file it will allow me to click apply - but obviously wont connect. :l I am at a lost end.

• Financial Statement Presentation Changes

  On March 10, 2010, FASB and IASB came to an agreement on financial statement presentation. They have been discussing changes for some time, such as displaying more lines items and moving certain line items from equity to the P&L, and now it seems they have finally come to a joint decision and put it in writing. I recently learned that there will be a trend to book nothing to equity and to convey everything in the P&L to take away any facility for companies to hide losses from its shareholders, investors, etc. (I'm exaggerating when I say book nothing to equity. Obviously, those items that already live there, such as stocks and dividends, would stay there.) But accounts like your CTA (Cumulative Translation Adjustment account) used to plug the gain or loss from equity translation would move from the equity section to your expense section. The rationale is that when you run translation, you're doing so for a subsidiary that you own, or simply put, it's a foriegn investment. Thus, the gains/losses of that foriegn investment should be itemized on your P&L and not buried in equity. The FASB will include changes in financial statement presentation in its Exposure Draft that is planned for issuance at the end of April 2010. Companies will be required to adopt the financial statement presentation provisions retroactively. Yes, that means companies will need to apply these changes to previously issued financial statements. The FASB Summary of Board Decisions can be found at "fasb.org".

• Reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 and now I cannot change preferences like theme, wallpaper, and nautilus preferences

  So I just down-rev'd ubuntu from 13.04 back to 12.04 LTS desktop 64 (Precise). I am using Unity. I just reformatted the Ubuntu partition, but kept my home directory intact, and everything seemed to reconnect just fine. No data was lost. However, I found that I cannot seem to change my preferences. So I cannot seem to change my desktop background, no matter how many ways I try--Ubuntu Tweak, Gnome Tweak, system settings. I also cannot change the system GTK+ theme, though apparently I am able to change the windows border theme. Further, I cannot seem to change my Nautilus preferences--so I cannot seem the make the default view a list view, and I cannot make the "single-click" behavior the default. I even went into the nautilus org.gnome.nautilus settings to manually change things, but no luck. I thought it was a permissions issue, so I did a chown on the home folder and on the .gvfs folder. Still no luck. So somewhere there seems to be a permission that I am not catching. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

  I am using Ubuntu as a virtual machine in VMWare. I have used this code to write a boot loader which would write Hello world on the screen. After that I copied the boot.bin file to my usb and took it to my Windows OS. After this I burned the boot.bin file to boot.img and boot.iso files. Then I created a new virtual machine and named it booter, when it asked for the .iso file of the OS I want to run I gave it the boot.iso file, about which I told above, then I powered on that virtual machine but it gave me this error PXE-M0F: No boot filename received PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM Operating System not found Please tell me what is the main problem and how can I overcome that problem.

• Stereo images rectification and disparity: which algorithms?

  I'm trying to figure out what are currently the two most efficent algorithms that permit, starting from a L/R pair of stereo images created using a traditional camera (so affected by some epipolar lines misalignment), to produce a pair of adjusted images plus their depth information by looking at their disparity. Actually I've found lots of papers about these two methods, like: "Computing Rectifying Homographies for Stereo Vision" (Zhang - seems one of the best for rectification only) "Three-step image recti?cation" (Monasse) "Rectification and Disparity" (slideshow by Navab) "A fast area-based stereo matching algorithm" (Di Stefano - seems a bit inaccurate) "Computing Visual Correspondence with Occlusions via Graph Cuts" (Kolmogorov - this one produces a very good disparity map, with also occlusion informations, but is it efficient?) "Dense Disparity Map Estimation Respecting Image Discontinuities" (Alvarez - toooo long for a first review) Anyone could please give me some advices for orienting into this wide topic? What kind of algorithm/method should I treat first, considering that I'll work on a very simple input: a pair of left and right images and nothing else, no more information (some papers are based on additional, pre-taken, calibration infos)? Speaking about working implementations, the only interesting results I've seen so far belongs to this piece of software, but only for automatic rectification, not disparity: http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stphmkr/index.html I tried the "auto-adjustment" feature and seems really effective.
