• jQuery - select onchange to slide in / slide out div or form

  Hi, I am trying to enhance a form, by showing only relevant fields depending on initial selection via a form select field. It is an order form for 3 products and all 3 products have unique properties. My idea was to hide all the content in divs, then reveal the relevant div when the product is selected. I have found some solutions that show / hide a div, but none with any animation. It doesn't have to be a slide but just something nice! The alternative is instead of revealing a div, would be to load a seperate form, but this seems unnecessary. I am not sure whether i need a plug in, as I am pretty new to jquery. • ColdFusion 9 ORM - Securing an object at a low level...

  Hiya: I wonder if anybody has an idea on this... I'm looking at securing a low level object in my model (a "member" object) so by default only certain information can be accessed from it. Here's a possible approach (damn sexy if it would work!): 1) Add a property called "locked" - defaulting to "true" to the object itself. It appears that the only option to do this, and not tie it to a db table column, is to use the formula attribute that takes a query. So to default locked to TRUE I've got: <cfproperty name="locked" formula="select 1" /> 2) Then, I overwrite the existing set-ers and get-ers to use this: e.g. <cffunction name="getFullname" returnType="string"> <cfscript> if (this.getLocked()) { return this.getScreenName(); } else { return this.getFullname(); } </cfscript> </cffunction> 3) When i use it like this: <p> #oMember.getFullName()# </p> shows the ScreenName (great!) but... When I do this: <cfset oMember.setLocked(false)> <p> #oMember.getFullName()# </p> Just hangs!!! It appears that attempting to set a property that's been defined using "formula" is a no-no. Any ideas? Any other way we can have properties attached to an ORM object that are gettable and settable without them being present in the db? Ideas appreciated!

• Asp MVC - "The Id field is required" validation message on Create; Id not set to [Required]

  This is happening when I try to create the entity using a Create style action in Asp.Net MVC 2. The POCO has the following properties: public int Id {get;set;} [Required] public string Message {get; set} On the creation of the entity, the Id is set automatically, so there is no need for it on the Create action. The ModelState says that "The Id field is required", but I haven't set that to be so. Is there something automatic going on here? EDIT - Reason Revealed The reason for the issue is answered by Brad Wilson via Paul Speranza in one of the comments below where he says (cheers Paul): You're providing a value for ID, you just didn't know you were. It's in the route data of the default route ("{controller}/{action}/{id}"), and its default value is the empty string, which isn't valid for an int. Use the [Bind] attribute on your action parameter to exclude ID. My default route was: new { controller = "Customer", action = "Edit", id = " " } // Parameter defaults EDIT - Update Model technique I actually changed the way I did this again by using TryUpdateModel and the exclude parameter array asscoiated with that. • How do I create a dynamic data transfer object dynamically from ADO.net model

  I have a pretty simple database with 5 tables, PK's and relationships setup, etc. I also have an ASP.net MVC3 project I'm using to create simple web services to feed JSON/XML to a mobile app using post/get. To access my data I'm using an ADO.net entity model class to handle generation of the entities, etc. Due to issues with serialization/circular references created by the auto-generated relations from ADO.net entity model, I've been forced to create "Data transfer objects" to strip out the relations and data that doesn't need to be transferred. Question 1: is there an easier way to create DTOs using the entity framework itself? IE, specify only the entity properties I want to convert to Jsonresults? I don't wish to use any 3rd party frameworks if I can help it. Question 2: A side question for Entity Framework, say I create an ADO.net entity model in one project within a solution. Because that model relies on the connection to the database specified in project A, can project B somehow use that model with a similar connection? Both projects are in the same solution. Thanks!

• WPF - List items not visible in Blend when 'DisplayMemberPath' is used

  Hi, We're currently working out how to implement MVVM and I've got to the point where I've got the MVVM Light Toolkit set up in blend and can specify dummy data to be supplied if running in Blend. All good. I've created a dummy list of data. The list contains 6 instances of a very simple class called DummyItem which has Age and Name properties. Here's the main code from my 'DummyList' class: public class DummyItem{ public string Name; public int Age; public DummyItem(string name, int age){ this.Name = name; this.Age = age; } } public class DummyList : ArrayList { public DummyList() { this.Add(new DummyItem("Dummy1", 00)); this.Add(new DummyItem("Dummy2", 01)); this.Add(new DummyItem("Dummy3", 02)); this.Add(new DummyItem("Dummy4", 03)); this.Add(new DummyItem("Dummy5", 04)); this.Add(new DummyItem("Dummy6", 05)); } } Here's the operative part of my XAML. The DataContext line does work and points to the correct ViewModel. <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot"> <ListBox x:Name="ListViewBox" DataContext="{Binding Source={StaticResource Locator}, Path=ListViewModel}" ItemsSource="{Binding TheList}" DisplayMemberPath="Name"> </ListBox> </Grid> The problem is, when I add 'DisplayMemberPath', as I have above, then I can no longer see the list items in Blend. If I remove 'DisplayMemberPath', then I see a list of objects (DummyItem) with their full path. When the app is run, everything works perfectly. It's just that in Blend itself I cannot see the list items when I use 'DisplayMemberPath'. Anyone know why I can't see the items inside Blend itself when I use DisplayMemberPath? Thanks! AT

• New projects not built when target platform is set explicitly

  I create a new solution with one project, and then change the target platform from "Any CPU" to "x86". After this new projects added doesn't get built by default, and their target platform doesn't follow the global settings. Why?! Looking at the configuration manager new projects added are not checked to "Build", and they get target platform "Any CPU" instead of the globally set x86. Why is this happening? I expect new projects too to get the globally set and defined x86 target platform.. Some things I've tried: Toggle global platform back to Any CPU, and then to x86 again. No change.. Choosing platform explicitly for the new project. x86 is not available in the list, and when I say <New..> and try adding it I'm not allowed as ".. a solution platform with the same name already exists.". On the build properties for the new project I can't change the platform in the Configuration section, but I can set "Platform target" to x86 in the General section. It is however not clear whether this actually makes a difference, and it wouldn't respond if I change the target platform globally later. Initially I thought this was a problem from converting my solution from VS2008 to VS2010, but the problem applies both places. I.e. when I create a solution in VS2008 and just stay in VS2008 I still get the problem.

• Raphael.js: Adding a new custom element

  I would like to create a custom Raphael element, with custom properties and functions. This object must also contain predefined Raphael objects. For example, I would have a node class, that would contain a circle with text and some other elements inside it. The problem is to add this new object to a set. These demands are needed because non-Raphael objects cannot be added to sets. As a result, custom objects that can contain Raphael objects cannot be used. • Dynamic Method Creation

  So, I have been trying to research this all morning, and have had no luck. I am trying to find a way to dynamically create a method/delegate/lambda that returns a new instance of a certain class (not known until runtime) that inherits from a certain base class. I can guarantee the following about the unknown/dynamic class It will always inherit from one known Class (Row) It will have atleast 2 constructors (one accepting a long, and one accepting an IDataRecord) I plan on doign the following: Finding all classes that have a certain attribute on them Creating a delegate/method/lambda/whatever that creates a new instance of the class Storing the delegate/whatever along with some properties in a struct/class Insert the struct into a hashtable When needed, pull the info out of the hashtable and calling the delegate/whatever to get a new instance of the class and returning it/adding it to a list/etc. I need help only with #2 above!!! I have no idea where to start. I really just need some reference material to get me started, or some keywords to throw into google. This is for a compact/simple to use ORM for our office here. I understand the above is not simple, but once working, should make maintaining the code incredibly simple. Please let me know if you need any more info! And thanks in advance! :)

• Why is a NullReferenceException thrown when a ToolStrip button is clicked twice with code in the `Click` event handler?

  I created a clean WindowsFormsApplication solution, added a ToolStrip to the main form, and placed one button on it. I've added also an OpenFileDialog, so that the Click event of the ToolStripButton looks like the following: private void toolStripButton1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { openFileDialog1.ShowDialog(); } I didn't change any other properties or events. The funny thing is that when I double-click the ToolStripButton (the second click must be quite fast, before the dialog opens), then cancel both dialogs (or choose a file, it doesn't really matter) and then click in the client area of main form, a NullReferenceException crashes the application (error details attached at the end of the post). Please note that the Click event is implemented while DoubleClick is not. What's even more strange that when the OpenFileDialog is replaced by any user-implemented form, the ToolStripButton blocks from being clicked twice. I'm using VS2008 with .NET3.5. I didn't change many options in VS (only fontsize, workspace folder and line numbering). Does anyone know how to solve this? It is 100% replicable on my machine, is it on others too? One solution that I can think of is disabling the button before calling OpenFileDialog.ShowDialog() and then enabling the button back (but it's not nice). Any other ideas? • Multi-module maven build : different result from parent and from module

  I am migrating an application from ant build to maven 3 build. Typically if I build PImport only, the generated war is similar to what I had with my ant build and if I build from the parent pom, my war took 20MB, a lot of dependencies from other modules had been added. Both wars are running well. My project PWebService has unit tests to be executed during the build. It is using mock-ejb which has cglib as dependency. Having a problem of ClassNotFound with this one, I had to exclude it and add a dependency to cglib-nodep (see last pom extract). If I then build only this module, it is working well. But if I build from the parent project, it fails because other dependencies in other modules also had an implicit dependency on cglib. I had to exclude it in every modules pom and add the dependency to cglib-nodep everywhere to make it run. Do I miss something important in my configuration ? • How can you connect to a password protected MS Access Database from a Spring JdbcTemplate?

  I need to connect to a password protected MS Access 2003 DB using the JDBC-ODBC bridge. I can't find out how to specify the password in the connect string, or even if that is the correct method of connecting. It would probably be relevant to mention that this is a Spring App which is accessing the database through a JdbcTemplate configured as a datasource bean in our application context file. • Properly design a code editor application

  I'm working on personal project which is basically a code editor. Imagine standard File menu with menu items New, Open, Save, Save As, Save All, Close, Close All. I'm stuck with proper design. Currently I have: A Document class which represents a document - code editing control, respective tab in tab bar and various properties such as Caption, Filename, IsModified etc. A Documents class which represents all open documents. Contains methods like New, Open(FileName), ... The problem is that I can't figure out which class / menu command is responsible for which tasks. For example, with File-New menu command is simple - call Documents.New and that's it. But what for File-Open? The Documents.Open method expects filename as a parameter. So before calling this method I need to open an file selection dialog, let user select files and for each file call Documents.Open(FileName). Where is best place for this supporting code, in menu command, rewrite Documents.Open and put it there? The same with Save actions. Which is responsible for saving? Is it Documents class which uses Document.Editor.SaveToFile(FileName) or better create Save method in Document class? Somewhere in the middle also need to ask user if he wants to save current document... I'm stuck. Any ideas? Edited: The programming language is Delphi.

• Loading an XML configuration file BEFORE the flex application loads

  Hi, We are using an XML file as an external configuration file for several parameters in our application (including default values for UI components and properties values of some service layer objects). The idea is to be able to load the XML configuration file before the flex application initializes any of its components. This is crucial because XML loading is processed a-synchronously in flex, which can potentially cause race-conditions in the application. For example: the configuration file holds the endpoint URL of a web service used to obtain data from the server. The URL resides in the XML because we want to allow our users to alter the endpoint URL according to their environment. Now because the endpoint URL is retrieved only after the XML has been completely loaded, some of the application's components might be invoking operations on this web service before it is initialized with the correct endpoint. The trivial solution would have been to suspend the initialization of the application until the complete event is dispatched by the loader. But it appears that this solution is far from being trivial. I haven't found a single solution that allows me to load the XML before any other object in the application. Can anyone advice or comment on this matter? Regards, Shahar

• Breeze Expand not working on WebAPI with EF

  I have published a WebAPI service which returns a list of items. I am implementing Breeze and have managed to get it basically working with filtering/sorting. However, the Expand is not working. http://www.ftter.com/desktopmodules/framework/api/dare/dares/?$filter=DareId%20eq%2010&expand%20eq%20ToUser You can see the ToUserId ForeignKey in the response above, but the ToUser properties are NULL (the user definitely exists) You can see the ToUser EF navigation property in the metadata. When I use .Include on the server side I can populate it with EF, but I don't want to do this. • C# Breakpoint Weirdness

  In my program I've got two data files A and B. The data in A is static and the data in B refers back to the data in A. In order to make sure the data in B is invalidated when A is changed, I keep an identifier for each of the links which is a long byte-string identifying the data. I get this string using BitConverter on some of the important properties. My problem is that this scheme isn't working. I save the identifiers initially, and with I reload (with the exact same data in A) the identifiers don't match anymore. It seems the bit converter gives different results when I go to save. The really weird thing about it is, if I place a breakpoint in the save code, I can see the identifier it's writing to the file is fine, and the next load works. If I don't place a breakpoint and say print the identifiers to console instead, they're totally different. It's like when my program is running at full-speed the CPU messes up some instructions. This isn't the first time something like this happens to me. I've seen it in other projects. What gives? Has anyone every experienced this kind of debugging weirdness? I can't explain how stopping the program and not stopping it can change the output. Also, it's not a hardware problem because this happens on my laptop as well.

• [Delphi] How would you refactor this code?

  This hypothetical example illustrates several problems I can't seem to get past, even though I keep trying!! ... Suppose the original code is a long event handler, coded in the UI, triggered when a user clicks a cell in a grid. Expressed as pseudocode it's: if Condition1=true then begin //loop through every cell in row, //if aCell/headerCellValue>1 then //color aCell red end else if Condition2=true then begin //do some other calculation adding cell and headerCell values, and //if some other product>2 then //color the whole row green end else show an error message I look at this and say "Ah, refactor to the strategy pattern! The code will be easier to understand, easier to debug, and easier to later extend!" I get that. And I can easily break the code into multiple procedures. The problem is ultimately scope related. Assume the pseudocode makes extensive use of grid properties, values displayed in cells, maybe even built-in grid methods. How do you move all that to another unit, without referencing the grid component in the UI--which would break all the "rules" about loose coupling that make OOP valuable? ... • Access Flash Symbol Via Code from an .as Class

  Hi, I've got a movie clip symbol in my .fla file that I need to reference in an .as file which is in a subfolder in the project. I select the symbol in the library and edit its properties. Its name is bubble; I Export for ActionScript and Export in frame 1. I give it a class name of Bubble. Now I need to go to my .as class, called SomeClass.as There, I need to reference the symbol, because I want to move it from within related code in that .as file. But if I try bubble.x I get an error. If I try var myBubble:Bubble = new Bubble(); I get 'Access of undefined property myBubble'. I was told that I might try 'importing the document class' but how do you import a class which is in the root directory of your app from within a class that's in a subfolder? (Don't know if this would provide the solution anyway)... Tanks.

  Hi, If a disabled drop-down list is dynamically rendered to the page, it is still possible to use Firebug, or another tool, to tamper with the submitted value, and to remove the "disabled" HTML attribute. This code: protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e) { var ddlTest = new DropDownList() {ID="ddlTest", Enabled = false}; ddlTest.Items.AddRange(new [] { new ListItem("Please select", ""), new ListItem("test 1", "1"), new ListItem("test 2", "2") }); Controls.Add(ddlTest); } results in this HTML being rendered: <select disabled="disabled" id="Properties_ddlTest" name="Properties$ddlTest"> <option value="" selected="selected">Please select</option> <option value="1">test 1</option> <option value="2">test 2</option> </select> The problem occurs when I use Firebug to remove the "disabled" attribute, and to change the selected option. On submission of the form, and re-creation of the field, the newly generated control has the correct value by the end of OnLoad, but by OnPreRender, it has assumed the identity of the submitted control and has been given the submitted form value. .NET seems to have no way of detecting the fact that the field was originally created in a disabled state and that the submitted value was faked. This is understandable, as there could be legitimate, client-side functionality that would allow the disabled attribute to be removed. Is there some way, other than a brute force approach, of detecting that this field's value should not have been changed? I see the brute force approach as being something crap, like saving the correct value somewhere while still in OnLoad, and restoring the value in the OnPreRender. As some fields have dependencies on others, that would be unacceptable to me.

• C# How can I return my base class in a webservice

  I have a class Car and a derived SportsCar: Car Something like this: public class Car { public int TopSpeed{ get; set; } } public class SportsCar : Car { public string GirlFriend { get; set; } } I have a webservice with methods returning Cars i.e: [WebMethod] public Car GetCar() { return new Car() { TopSpeed = 100 }; } It returns: <Car> <TopSpeed>100</TopSpeed> </Car> I have another method that also returns cars like this: [WebMethod] public Car GetMyCar() { Car mycar = new SportsCar() { GirlFriend = "JLo", TopSpeed = 300 }; return mycar; } It compiles fine and everything, but when invoking it I get: System.InvalidOperationException: There was an error generating the XML document. --- System.InvalidOperationException: The type wsBaseDerived.SportsCar was not expected. Use the XmlInclude or SoapInclude attribute to specify types that are not known statically. I find it strange that it can't serialize this as a straight car, as mycar is a car. Adding XmlInclude on the WebMethod of ourse removes the error: [WebMethod] [XmlInclude(typeof(SportsCar))] public Car GetMyCar() { Car mycar = new SportsCar() { GirlFriend = "JLo", TopSpeed = 300 }; return mycar; } and it now returns: <Car xsi:type="SportsCar"> <TopSpeed>300</TopSpeed> <GirlFriend>JLo</GirlFriend> </Car> But I really want the base class returned, without the extra properties etc from the derived class. Is that at all possible without creating mappers etc? Please say yes ;)

  I would like to create a query using the JPA CriteriaBuilder and I would like to add an ORDER BY clause. • Sorting out POCO, Repository Pattern, Unit of Work, and ORM

  I'm reading a crapload on all these subjects: POCO Repository Pattern Unit of work Using an ORM mapper ok I see the basic definitions of each in books, etc. but I can't visualize this all together. Meaning an example structure (DL, BL, PL). So what, you have your DL objects that contain your CRUD methods, then your BL objects which are "mapped" using an ORM back to your DL objects? What about DTOs...they're your DL objects right? I'm confused. Can anyone really explain all this together or send me example code? I'm just trying to put this together. I am determining whether to go LINQ to SQL or EF 4 (not sure about NHibrernate yet). Just not getting the concepts as in physical layers and code layers here and what each type of object contains (just properties for DTOs, and CRUDs for your core DL classes that match the table fields???). I just need some guidance here. I'm reading Fowler's books and starting to read Evans but just not all there yet.

• SQL Server getdate() to a string like "2009-12-20"

  In Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and .NET 2.0, I want to convert the current date to a string of this format: "YYYY-MM-DD". For example, December 12th 2009 would become "2009-12-20". How do I do this in SQL. The context of this SQL statement in the table definiton. In other words, this is the default value. So when a new record is created the default value of the current date is stored as a string in the above format. I'm trying: SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), GETDATE(), 102) AS [YYYY.MM.DD] But SQL server keeps converting that to: ('SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), GETDATE(), 102) AS [YYYY.MM.DD]') so the result is just: 'SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), GETDATE(), 102) AS [YYYY.MM.DD]' Here's a screen shot of what the Visual Studio server explorer, table, table definition, properties shows: These wrapper bits are being adding automatically and converting it all to literal string: (N' ') Here's the reason I'm trying to use something other than the basic DATETIME I was using previously: This is the error I get when hooking everything to an ASP.NET GridView and try to do an update via the grid view: Server Error in '/' Application.
