  Recently a virus attacked my pc and cleared 5% of my hard disk which has one partition I viewed the disk in a hex viewer program like active undelete ,cleared the virus data and overwrote it with 1s I want to recover a large file that is about 10gb, but no recovery tools seem to be able to recover any files. I want to know ,in theory, is this file recoverable ? I think that files are fragmented, researched about NTFS File System and i understand cluster information are just saved in MFT File ? Is there any way to recover file without a MFT structure ?

• How to create website shortcuts on the desktop / in a folder using Chrome?

  Help with something really basic, which I am unable to figure out. In Windows creating a shortcut (link) for a website is as easy as dragging-and-dropping the favicon/address bar to the desktop or a folder. I tried the same in Ubuntu (Chrome browser), but it's not working. The web page is being saved as a file, but not as a link/shortcut. Am I missing something or is there no way to quickly create shortcuts to web pages/web sites without installing some app for that? If the above is true, is there an app that does what I need? I hope I am clear enough.

  What is the reason partitioning is usually a step in installing multiple (2) operating systems on the same computer? Does an operating system have to have it's own partition to run or can it run in the same partition as another operating system? (i.e. -can two of the same flavor run in the same partition but if you have one Linux and one windows it needs to be partitioned?) Is it necessary to make disk partitions to run multiple operating systems?

  I foolishly removed my USB stick from a Windows XP machine seemingly without unmounting it (or whatever the Window equivalent is..). Anyway, on inserting the stick into my linux machine, the file I was working on shows up, but it is completely empty (0KB). Since I'm pretty much a Windows novice these days, I'd like to know if there is any temporary location where I will still be able to find this file, or is it now lost permanently?

  Sometimes, especially when I open pages that have some kind of multimedia contents, Chrome freezes. It always happens directly after opening a new tab. In contrast to the way Chrome usually has only tabs crashing, the entire windows freezes. If I have multiple separate Chrome windows open, the others keep working. I run Ubuntu 12.04 and Chrome in version 20.0.1132.47 but this has been going on since I last set up my machine around half a year ago. Anyone having the same problems or an idea what could be wrong here?

I am new to Ubuntu and comfortable with using Terminal. Beyond that, I have no idea what I'm doing. This happened all of a sudden a few weeks ago. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Since my drives are 3TB, fdisk and cfdisk won't cut it due to their 2GB limit, but they are straight forward when managing partitions - adding da or fd as types. But, there is not that straight forward guide for RAID partition setup with parted. So, how do I make Non-FS or RAID partition with parted?

  I know this is strange. Some time ago, I bought a new 7200rpm HDD for my desktop system (I'll look for the model later). Every time the CPU is used, a high frequency cheep comes from the HDD. I'm sure it's the HDD because the problem does not occur if the HDD is not attached or is in energy-saving mode (I cross-checked by booting from a live CD). What could be the reason for the cheep sounds? Could it be the power supply?

  Many years ago I may have bought a few sitewide links for some of my sites, these have now come back to haunt me and I need to sort them out. I've tried to contact the owners but they're too lazy to bother changing the sites so I figure it's time to disavow the links. But is there a way to disavow all of the sitewide links on the domain apart from on the index page and would this be a benefit to leave the index or would it still be seen as spammy?   I'm sure all is fine, but i need some reassurance. Last month my company launched consolidated two of their websites into one new website. www.fdmgroup.com and www.fdmacademy.com into a newly designed www.fdmgroup.com. Because the FDM Academy grew as it's own brand we decided not to just forward the domain to the fdmgroup website, but instead just mirror the new FDM Group website and use a canonical tags to the FDM Group domain (so the link juice will pass to the FDM Group domain pages) The website has be live for nearly a month and i don't believe any power has passed down through the FDM Group website to it's deeper pages even though 301 redirects from the legacy group and academy domains in place. I am also seeing the same problem on the FDM Academy domain, but i expect to see this as every page has a canonical to the same page on the Is there anything which is restricting the flow of power through the site, or am i just being impatient.   I have a Seagate expansion 2TB HDD which I've managed to get working on my wireless router (thanks to fat32format) however I haven't managed to set my backup to work with it. Vist Home Premium requires that I input a username and password in the backup utility. As far as I'm aware that type of access control isn't set on the HDD: Can I set up the access control on the HDD? If so how Or, can I set the backup to work without it?   Is there a way to get the grouped list of events (such as in Top events) which were triggered on pages matching a regular expression? I may add the Page secondary dimension in Top events and apply the regex filter but this way I won't get a grouped list. I may apply the filter to Events - Pages report but this way the events will be grouped only inside pages whilst I need global grouping. Any suggestions?

  I have 2 identical Dell R720 servers running identical Oracle Enterprise Linux(RHEL)6.4. Both servers (supposedly) configured in exactly the same way. However, one of the servers is behaving differently. Every other reboot its local HDD name(and related partitions) flip from /dev/sda to /dev/sdj. This is problematic because both servers are configured for multipathd, and if this flip happens their config does not match and Oracle DB(or its clusterware) complains that nodes are not configured identically. Why does one server has a consistent device names while the other server keeps flipping back and forth? How can I make local hdd to consistently be /dev/sda? I suspect this might have something to do with udev but I'm not sure.

• Moving Windows 7 OEM from one hard disk to another but retaining the rest of the hardware

  I think this should be very easy but it doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of info out there. I've personally never done this exact maneuver because I've never needed to retain the OEM licence before. I have a laptop and I wish to simply swap out the hard disk with a bigger one but keep the Windows installation and files intact. Do I use Windows Backup and Restore and burn DVDs or do I just Acronis or something similar. Or is there an even easier way of doing this involving a third party desktop? Any help much appreciated.

  Immediately after choosing an account, and starting to log in, it shows the logging out message and goes back to the account selection display. This even happened in safe mode with the administrator's account. So I can't log in. I'll be using a Linux Live CD to extract the laptop's data. Could this be a virus or a hard disk problem? And what should I do?

• HDD dead forever???

  Yesterday I turned on my computer and it couldn't boot. I found out the hd (320GB SATA Seagate Momentus 7200.3 for notebook) was broken, it couldn't be recognized by the BIOS. I have another of the same hd, so I exchanged the boards. I found out that there is a problem on its board since my good hd didn't work. But the broken hd doesn't work with the good board as well: it can be recognized but when I insert a Windows Instalation DVD it says the hd is 0GB. I put it in a case and use it in another computer via USB, and but it doesn't show up in the "My Computer". I used a software to recover files called "GetDataBack for NTFS", it recognized the hd but with the wrong size (2TB). I try to make it read the hd but it get an I/O error reading sector. It tries to read, the hd spins... So, since I'm using a good board on it, the problem seems to be internal. Is there anything someone could do recover the files from it?

  I am trying to install Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 64bit to a new machine. mobo = gigabyte x58a-ud3r cpu = i7 930 ssd = Kingston 64GB V+ hhd = wd 1tb black When the installation gets to the prepare partions step, no partitions are listed. Drives are recognized by BIOS and WinXP setup sees them. I have also tried Ubuntu 9.10. It does not see the drives also. Just searching around I found a suggestion to select "no dmraid" in additional options screen. This did not seem to help. Any ideas?
