• Compiling scalafx for Java 7u7 (that contains JavaFX 2.2) on OS X

  The compilation instructions of scalafx says to do: export JAVAFX_HOME=/Path/To/javafx-sdk2.1.0-beta sbt clean compile package make-pom package-src However, with the new packaging of JavaFX as part of the Java JDK itself (i.e. 7u7 for OS X) there no longer seems to be such a 'javafx-sdkx.x.x' folder. The Oracle docs say that JavaFX JDK is placed alongside the main Java JDK (in same folders). So I do: $ export JAVAFX_HOME=/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_07.jdk $ sbt clean [warn] Using project/plugins/ (/Users/asko/Sources/scalafx/project/plugins) for plugin configuration is deprecated. A recent MacBook Air (core i7) is a complete different beast! :)

• How do I determine whether calculation was completed, or detect interrupted calculation?

  I have a rather large workbook that takes a really long time to calculate. It used to be quite a challenge to get it to calculate all the way, since Excel is so eager to silently abort calculation if you so much as look at it. To help alleviate the problem, I created some VBA code to initiate the the calculation, which is initiated by a form, and the result is that it is not quite as easy to interrupt the calculation process, but it is still possible. (I can easily do this by clicking the close X on the form, but I imagine there are other ways) Rather than taking more steps to try and make it harder to interrupt calculation, I'd like to have the code detect whether calculation is complete, so it can notify the user rather than just blindly forging on into the rest of the steps in my code. So far, I can't find any way to do that. I've seen references to Application.CalculationState, but the value is xlDone after I interrupt calculation, even if I interrupt the calculation after a few seconds (it normally takes around an hour). I can't think of a way to do this by checking the value of cells, since I don't know which one is calculated last. I see that there is a way to mark cells as "dirty" but I haven't been able to find a way to check the dirtiness of a cell. And I don't know if that's even the right path to take, since I'd likely have to check every cell in every sheet. The act of interrupting calculation does not raise an error, so my ON ERROR doesn't get triggered. Is there anything I'm missing? Any ideas? Any ideas?

• Is there a design pattern to cut down on code duplication when subclassing Activities in Android?

  I've got a common task that I do with some Activities - downloading data then displaying it. I've got the downloading part down pat; it is, of course, a little tricky due to the possibility of the user changing the orientation or cancelling the Activity before the download is complete, but the code is there. There is enough code handling these cases such that I don't want to have to copy/paste it to each Activity I have, so I thought to create an abstract subclass Activity itself such that it handles a single background download which then launches a method which fills the page with data. This all works. The issue is that, due to single inheritance, I am forced to recreate the exact same class for any other type of Activity - for example, I use Activity, ListActivity and MapActivity. To use the same technique for all three requires three duplicate classes, except each extends a different Activity. Is there a design pattern that can cut down on the code duplication? As it stands, I have saved much duplication already, but it pains me to see the exact same code in three classes just so that they each subclass a different type of Activity.

• Reason for socket.error

  Hi, I am a complete newbie when it comes to python, and programming in general. I've been working on a little webapp for the past few weeks trying to improve my coding chops. A few days ago my laptop was stolen so I went out and got a new MacBook Pro. Thank God I had everything under subversion control. The problem is now that I am on my new machine a script that I was running has stopped working and I have no idea why. This is really the only part of what I have been writing that I borrowed heavily for existing scripts. It is from the widely available whois.py script and I have only slightly modified it as follows (see below). It was running fine on my old system (running ubuntu), but now the socket.error is being raised. I'm completely lost on this, and would really appreciate any help. • smart phone UI limitations

  I would like to know, what limitations there are for how far one can go in terms of replacing UI components of current touch screen smart phones, in particular iPhone, Blackberry and android based phones. What I would like to do is create a custom UI for dialing out and incoming calls. I have some experience with Blackberry development. The theme builder for it, can be used to customize certain items on the incoming call screen, but it doesn't look like that you can increase the size of answer button. I know Blackberry also gives you access to all the phone APIs, but I'm not sure that you can create your own UI that can gain preference over the Blackberry incoming call screen. And if you try to customize the incoming call screen by adding any buttons to it, they would be rendered as pictures. I could possibly design a complete UI for android, since different manufactures have different UI for android based phones. Can I do what I want to do using iPhone, Blackberry or android? Or any other phone for that matter? I am guessing may be for Nokia phones using Qt, but I prefer the 3 platforms I listed. Thanks for all your help.

  Hi guys, I'm implementing an image upload facility for my website. The uploading facility is complete but what I'm working on at the moment is manipulating the images. For this task I am using PHPThumb (http://phpthumb.gxdlabs.com). Anyway as I go along I'm coming across potential issues, to do with resizing and compression. Basically I want to acheive the following results: The ideal image dimensions are: 800px width, 600px height. If an uploaded image exceeds either of these dimensions, it will need be resized to meet the requirements. Otherwise, leave as it is. The ideal file size is 200kb. If an uploaded image exceeds this then it will need to be compressed to meet this requirement. Otherwise, leave as it is. So in a nutshell: 1) Check the dimensions, resize if required. 2) Check the filesize, compress if required. Has anybody done anything like this / could you give me some pointers? Is PHPThumb the correct tool to do this in?

  hi, I'm looking for a columnizer plugin (making columns of my small divs). It is very important it has the following features: 1) It has to be as light as possible (if it is only css would be great, but I guess it is difficult make it work on IE then...) 2) It has to be cross-browser (I don't need IE6... IE7 and IE8 compatibility is required). 3) The divs has not to be broken. In other terms, the nodes have to be moved to next block but not splitted in 2. The nodes are div elements, they might include other divs, images and text. 4) The column have to have a fixed width and fixed margin. This means that when I resize the browser, and new columns are created (become the window becomes wider), the new columns have to rigidly keep the same width and distance between them. (margin:20px) (width:200px) Would be great to have some css.. but I'm afraid I need some jQuery plugin because I need all 4 features being supported. I found several plugins and css styleshits with very good solutions, but I couldn't find a complete one. Thanks

• Is it possible to load an entire SQL Server CE database into RAM?

  I'm using LinqToSql to query a small SQL Server CE database. I've noticed that any operations involving sub-properties are disappointingly slow. For example, if I have a Customer table that is referenced by an Order table via a foreign key, LinqToSql will automatically create an EntitySet<Order> property. This is a nice convenience, allowing me to do things like Customer.Order.Where(o => o.ProductName = "Stopwatch"), but for some reason, SQL Server CE hangs up pretty bad when I try to do stuff like this. One of my queries, which isn't really that complicated takes 3-4 seconds to complete. I can get the speed up to acceptable, even fast, if I just grab the two tables individually and convert them to List<Customer> and List<Order>, then join then manually with my own query, but this is throwing out a lot of the appeal of LinqToSql. So, I'm wondering if I can somehow get the whole database into RAM and just query that way, then occasionally save it. Is this possible? How? If not, is there anything else I can do to boost the performance? Note: My database in its initial state is about 250K and I don't expect it to grow to more than 1-2Mb. So, loading the data into RAM certainly wouldn't be a problem from a memory point of view.

• How do you make use of the provider independency in the Entity Framework?

  I'm trying to learn more about data access and the Entity Framework. My goal is to have a "provider independent" data access layer (to be able to switch easily e.g. from SQL Server to MySQL or vice versa), and since the EF is supposed to be provider independent it seems like a good way to go. But how do you use this provider independence? I mean, I was expecting to be able to sort of "program to an interface", and then just be able to switch database provider. But as far as I can tell I'm only getting a concrete type to program against, an "Entities" class, e.g. in my case it is: UserDBEntities _context = new UserDBEntities(); What I would have expected to be able to switch provider easily was to have an interface e.g. like IEntities _context = new UserDBEntities(); Sort of like I can do with datasets... But maybe that isn't how it works at all with EF? Or do you just switch provider in the connectionstring, and the model stays the same?? Please remember that I'm a complete newbie at this EF, and rather inexperienced with databases in general, so I would really appreciate if you could be as clear as possible :-)

• Getting setting cookies on different domains, with javascript or other

  Haven't been able to find anything particular to this situation online so here i go... I need to set/get the cookies stored at "first.com" while browsing "second.com", I have full access of "first.com" but i only have javascript access (can manipulate the DOM as i want) on "second.com". My first approach was to create an iframe on second.com (with js) that loaded a page like "first.com/doAjax?setCookie=xxx" and that did an ajax call to say "first.com/setCookie?cookieData=xxx" which would set the cookie on "first.com" with the data we passed around. That pretty much worked fine for setting the cookie on first.com from second.com - for getting a cookie I basically followed the same procedure, created the iframe that loaded "first.com/doAjax?getCookie" and that would do an ajax call to say "first.com/getCookie" which would read the cookie info on first.com and return it as a JSON object. The problem is that I'm unable to bring that JSON cookie object back to "second.com" so I can read it, well maybe i could just bring it when the Ajax call is complete using "window.top" but there's timing issues because its not relative to when the iframe has been loaded. I hope i am clear and was wondering if there's an easier solution rather than this crazy iframe-ajax crap, also seems like this wont even work for getting cookies in SAFARI.

• IIS 6.0 Rewrite rules for Wordpress (Forward slash not working and other things)

  Hi, I am using Wordpress 3.0.4 on IIS 6.0 and Windows Server 2003, hosted by a company. I was having lots of issues using permalinks. I have fixed most, but now I have an issue with a forward-slash not being added to the address. This would be fine on most websites, but not on IIS for some reason. Specifically, if I go to "mysite.com/wp-admin" I can log-in and get to the dashboard, but as soon as I click anything there i am redirected to a broken link. For example: "mysite.com/post-new.php". If I add the slash at the end it's fine. So I tried to have a rewrite rule to automatically add the slash to such address: RewriteRule /wp-admin /wp-admin/ [L] But it still doesn't work.   I am developing an asp.net mvc application where user1 could delete data records which were just loaded before by user2. User2 either changes this non-existent data record (Update) or is doing an insert with this data in another table that a foreign-key constraint is violated. Where do you catch such expected exceptions? In the Controller of your asp.net mvc application or in the business service? Just a sidenote: I only catch the SqlException here if its a ForeignKey constraint exception to tell the user that another user has deleted a certain parent record and therefore he can not create the testplan. But this code is not fully implemented yet!   I want to be able to create a file from the Content Provider, however I get the following error: java.io.Filenotfoundexception: /0: open file failed: erofs (read-only file system) What I am trying to do is create a file whenever an application calls the insert method from my Provider. This is the excerpt of the code that does the file creation: FileWriter fstream = new FileWriter(valueKey); BufferedWriter out = new BufferedWriter(fstream); out.write(valueContent); out.close(); Originally I wanted to use openFileOutput() but the function appears to be undefined. Anyone has a workaround to this problem? EDIT: I found out that I had to specify the directory as well.   I have a long-running process where, due to a bug, a trivial/expendable thread is deadlocked with a thread which I would like to continue, so that it can perform some final reporting that would be hard to reproduce in another way. Of course, fixing the bug for future runs is the proper ultimate resolution. Of course, any such forced interrupt/kill/stop of any thread is inherently unsafe and likely to cause other unpredictable inconsistencies. (I'm familiar with all the standard warnings and the reasons for them.) But still, since the only alternative is to kill the JVM process and go through a more lengthy procedure which would result in a less-complete final report, messy/deprecated/dangerous/risky/one-time techniques are exactly what I'd like to try. The JVM is Sun's 1.6.0_16 64-bit on Ubuntu, and the expendable thread is waiting-to-lock an object monitor. Can an OS signal directed to an exact thread create an InterruptedException in the expendable thread? Could attaching with gdb, and directly tampering with JVM data or calling JVM procedures allow a forced-release of the object monitor held by the expendable thread? Would a Thread.interrupt() from another thread generate a InterruptedException from the waiting-to-lock frame? (With some effort, I can inject an arbitrary beanshell script into the running system.) Can the deprecated Thread.stop() be sent via JMX or any other remote-injection method? Any ideas appreciated, the more 'dangerous', the better! And, if your suggestion has worked in personal experience in a similar situation, the best!

• Design for fastest page download

  I have a file with millions of URLs/IPs and have to write a program to download the pages really fast. The connection rate should be at least 6000/s and file download speed at least 2000 with avg. 15kb file size. The network bandwidth is 1 Gbps. My approach so far has been: Creating 600 socket threads with each having 60 sockets and using WSAEventSelect to wait for data to read. As soon as a file download is complete, add that memory address(of the downloaded file) to a pipeline( a simple vector ) and fire another request. When the total download is more than 50Mb among all socket threads, write all the files downloaded to the disk and free the memory. So far, this approach has been not very successful with the rate at which I could hit not shooting beyond 2900 connections/s and downloaded data rate even less. Can somebody suggest an alternative approach which could give me better stats. Also I am working windows server 2008 machine with 8 Gig of memory. Also, do we need to hack the kernel so as we could use more threads and memory. Currently I can create a max. of 1500 threads and memory usage not going beyond 2 gigs [ which technically should be much more as this is a 64-bit machine ]. And IOCP is out of question as I have no experience in that so far and have to fix this application today. Thanks Guys!

• What database options do I have for the Blackberry?

  I notice most of the discussions about Blackberry database options are old, and generally not too informative. As of today, March 31st, 2010, what is the best, most universally supported, free database option available for Blackberry developers? I heard SQLite is available for JDE v5, but last I checked, that was still in beta, and I didn't want to commit to developing on a system that is not supported by most of the phones in service. Thing is, I don't see any dates on these claims. For all I know, the announcements I am reading are from 2008. So, I am still on v 4.7. I need to use a relational DB for the app I am developing, but there aren't many resources for DB handling available - or at least resources that are useful to me. I find a lot of "tutorials" that assume you know everything there is to know about Blackberry development, or Java. But no complete classes or anything. Many of these examples don't even work. Eclipse gives warnings and errors from code copied and pasted from other people's examples. I can answer any questions that may assist in this case. Hopefully, this thread will help many BB developers in the future.

• Create Extension Method to Produce Open & Closing Tags like Html.BeginForm()

  Hi Guys I wonder if it's possible to create an extension method which has functionality & behaviour similar to Html.BeginForm(), in that it would generate a complete Html tag, and I could specificy its contents inside <% { & } %> tags. For example, I could have a view like: <% using(Html.BeginDiv("divId")) %> <% { %> <!-- Form content goes here --> <% } %> This capability would be very useful in the context of the functionality I'm trying to produce with the example in this question This would give me the ability to create containers for the types that I'll be <% var myType = new MyType(123, 234); %> <% var tag = new TagBuilder("div"); %> <% using(Html.BeginDiv<MyType>(myType, tag) %> <% { %> <!-- controls used for the configuration of MyType --> <!-- represented in the context of a HTML element, e.g.: --> <div class="MyType" prop1="123" prop2="234"> <!-- add a select here --> <!-- add a radio control here --> <!-- whatever, it represents elements in the context of their type --> </div> <% } %> I realise this will produce invalid XHTML, but I think there could be other benefits that outweigh this, especially since this project doesn't require that the XHTML validate to the W3C standards. • Hibernate Session flush behaviour [ and Spring @Transactional ]

  I use Spring and Hibernate in a web-app, SessionFactory is injected into a DAO bean, and then this DAO is used in a Servlet through webservicecontext. DAO methods are transactional, inside one of the methods I use ... getCurrentSession().save(myObject); One servlet calls this method with an object passed. The update seems to not be flushed at once, it takes about 5 seconds to see the changes in the database. The servlet's method in which that DAO's update method is called, takes a fraction of second to complete. After the @Transactional method of DAO is completed, flushing may NOT happen ? It does not seem to be a rule [ I already see it ]. Then the question is this: what to do to force the session to flush after every DAO method? It may not be a good thing to do, but talking about a Service layer, some methods must end with immediate flush, and Hibernate Session behavior is not predictable. So what to do to guarantee that my @Transactional method persists all the changes after the last line of that method code? getCurrentSession().flush() is the only solution? p.s. I read somewhere that @Transactional IS ASSOCIATED with a DB Transaction. Method returns, transaction must be committed. I do not see this happens.

• Concurrent Threads in C# using BackgroundWorker

  My C# application is such that a background worker is being used to wait for the acknowledgement of some transmitted data. Here is some psuedo code demonstrating what I'm trying to do: UI_thread { TransmitData() { // load data for tx // fire off TX background worker } RxSerialData() { // if received data is ack, set ack received flag } } TX_thread { // transmit data // set ack wait timeout // fire off ACK background worker // wait for ACK background worker to complete // evaluate status of ACK background worker as completed, failed, etc. } ACK_thread { // wait for ack received flag to be set } What happens is that the ACK BackgroundWorker times out, and the acknowledgement is never received. I'm fairly certain that it is being transmitted by the remote device because that device has not changed at all, and the C# application is transmitting. I have changed the ack thread from this (when it was working)... for( i = 0; (i < waitTimeoutVar) && (!bAckRxd); i++ ) { System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1); } ...to this... DateTime dtThen = DateTime.Now(); DateTime dtNow; TimeSpan stTime; do { dtNow = DateTime.Now(); stTime = dtNow - dtThen; } while ( (stTime.TotalMilliseconds < waitTimeoutVar) && (!bAckRxd) ); The latter generates a very acurate wait time, as compared to the former. However, I am wondering if removal of the Sleep function is interferring with the ability to receive serial data. Does C# only allow one thread to run at a time, that is, do I have to put threads to sleep at some time to allow other threads to run? Any thoughts or suggestions you may have would be appreciated. I am using Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express Edition. Thanks.

• calling same function on different buttons not loaded yet

  I can not get this to work for every button and I cannot find anything explaining why. I use document and not the button its self because the button is contained in a template that is loaded later via ajax. I have this working for a similar function that is selecting a row in a table however I am not attempting to pass data in that scenario.
