• Do static / relative divs accept height in %

  I have a div which needs to be positioned statically / relatively. When it has both height and width defined in %, the browser (FF) ignores the height set and renders a very small div. However, when I set the height in px (approximately same calculated value), it works smoothly. The width defined in % works perfectly. I need the height to be defined in % as well - due to resolution / scaling issues.

• MacBook makes a noise from the MagSafe connection every time I flip a widget...

  OK this is bizarre. But basically, what happens is on my MacBook (latest model) whenever I 'flip' a Dashboard Widget I hear a little noise for the duration of the flip: like a tiny continuous squeak noise. It's quite strange. However, it only ever happens when the MagSafe cable is plugged in. WHY?! :'( The noise appears to me emitted from the MagSafe area itself, but, there's not any other CoreAnimation or Quartzey bits that cause this to happen, it only happens with Dashboard widgets... The noise is very quiet and you can only hear it in a silent room. Edit: Running the latest Snow Leopard.

  I would like to implement something similar to the Google quick scroll extension with jquery for the extracts of a search result, so when the full document is opened (within the same website) it gives the user the opportunity to go straight to the extract location. Is there an existing jquery script for this? If not, can you suggest any jquery/javascript code that would simplify my task to implement this. Notes: I can access the extracts from the document details page. I'm aware that the HTML in some cases could be slightly different in the extract than in the details page, finding no match. The search engine does not return where the extract was located. At the moment I'm trying to understand the JS code that the extension uses.

  I have a realy hard task here. I am working on an AngularJS web app, which is capable of sending different HTTP methods to our project's Restful Web Service and receiving responses in JSON. Basicaly it looks like this: You can create some REST resource from this application. Let's say an exam. To create an exam - you pick a resource from a list of available resources. This triggers a function, that sends a request to localhost:8080/STEP/api/explain/resorceName and gets a description for this resource. How do I go about routing/proxying/redirecting the url with _escaped_fragment_ to the corresponding html pages? I can't find documentation on this part of the process specifically, and my first thought was that I should be using a 301 or 302 redirect, but I was told that wasn't the case, albeit not given any more info.

• Changing html <-> ajax <-> php/mysql to threaded approach

  I have an application that needs to be updated real-time. There are various counters and other information that have to come from the database and the system needs to be up to date for the user. My approach now is just a normal ajax request every second to get the new values from the database. There is a JavaScript which loops every second getting the values trough ajax. This works fine but I think its very inefficient. The problem There is an ajax script that loops every second requesting data from php # On the server it has to load the PHP interpeter The PHP file has to get the data and format it correctly # PHP has to make a connection with the mysql database Work with the database(reads,never writes) Format the data so it can be send Send the data back to the browser # Close the database connection, and close the php interpeter Last the browser has to read these values and update the various html parts Now with this approach it has to load the interpreter and make a db connection every second. I was thinking of a way to make this more efficient, and maybe use a threaded approach to this. Threaded aprouch Do a post to the PHP when you enter the page and keep the connection alive In PHP only load the interpreter once, and make a connection to the DB ones Every second send an ajax response to the javascript listener The javascript listener than just changes values as the response from php arrives. I think this approach will be a great optimization to the server load and overall performance. But I can spot some weak point in the system and i need some help with these. Problems with the approach PHP execution time limit I don't think PHP is designed for such a setup. I know there is a time limit on php script execution. I don't know if an everlasting loop in PHP will cause any serious cpu/memory problems. Sending ajax request without breaking I don't know if it is possible to have just one ajax post action and have open and accepting data. user exists the page What will happen when the user exists the page and the PHP script is still going. Will it go on forever. security issues so far i can't think of any security issues. Almost every setup you use have some security issues. Maybe there are some with this solution I do not know of. Open to other solution I really want to change the setup as it is now and move to a threaded approach or better. If someone has a better approach to tackle this I definitely want to hear that. Maybe the usage of some other scripts is better suited for having an ongoing runtime. I only know php and java so any suggestions are welcome and I am willing to dig trough. I know there are things like perl, python etcetera that are used for this type of threaded but i don't know which one is best suited. When using other script If the best way is to go with other type of script like perl,python etcetera I do have some critera. The script has to be accessible via ajax post If it accepts some kind of json encode/decode it would be nice The script has to be able to access the session file This is essential because I need to know if the user is logged in The script has to be able to easily talk to MySQL All comments are welcome, and I hope this question is helpful to other also.   I'm writing an app that allows users search and browse catalogs of widgets. My WidgetCatalog class is serialized and deserialized to and from XML files using DataContractSerializer. My app is working now but I think I can make the code a lot more efficient if I started taking advantage of data binding rather then doing everything manually. Here's a stripped down version of my current WidgetCatalog class. [DataContract(Name = "WidgetCatalog")] class WidgetCatalog { [DataContract(Name = "Name")] public string Name { get; set; } [DataContract(Name = "Widgets")] public List<Widget> Widgets { get; set; } } I had to write a lot of extra code to keep my UI in sync when widgets are added or removed from a catalog, or their internal properties change. I'm pretty inexperienced with data-binding, but I think I want a BindingList<Widget> rather than a plain old List<Widget>. Is this right? In the past when I had similar needs I found that BindingList<T> does not serialize very well. Or at least the Event Handers between the items and the list are not serialized. I was using XmlSerializer though, and DataContractSerializer may work better. So I'm thinking of doing something like the code below. • Difficulty adding widgets to django form.

  I have a django app that tracks activities that can benefit a classroom. Using the django examples, I was able to build a form to enter this data. But when I try to add widgets to that form, things get tricky. What I want is a calendar widget that lets the user enter the 'activity_date' field using a widget. If I use Admin interface. The AdminDateWidget works fine. however. This particular user isn't allowed access to the admin interface so I need a different way to present this widget. Also I couldn't figure out how to make the bring the admin widget over into non-admin pages. So I tried a custom widget. This is the first custom widget I've built, so I'm not quite sure what is supposed to be going on here. Any Expert Advice? • Generate PDF - how to create paged HTML content beforehand?

  My task is to create ready-to-print invoices from a .NET web app. I am already generating the printer-friendly HTML for an invoice - it consists of an invoice header (that will actually need to appear on each printed page) and invoice positions (that may span multiple printed pages). Now, my task is to generate a PDF server-side, populate a header on each of its pages, then populate its pages with invoice positions. I need to generate the PDF from the existing HTML data - by simply passing HTML input to the PDF generator library. I've started using ABCPDF - I am using the AddImageHtml method. The problem I have is that ABCPDF seems to expect me to supply HTML content already paged. So, it won't work correctly when I feed it HTML content that would span on more than 1 PDF page. So, my question is - do you have any suggestions on making this work with ABCPDF? Or, more generally speaking, what other tools/approaches would you use for this - generating PDF doc with headers/footers from HTML input? Thanks
